  • 1913? Black Hawk Cocktail - Glen And Friends Cocktails After Dark
    Today the theme is cocktails using ingredients I don't usually grab for the show, so today we look at Sloe Gin Cocktails.
    Details about this Whisky and Sloe gin cocktail (or Rye and Sloe Gin, or Bourbon and Sloe Gin) are pretty sketchy. The earliest I can trace it back to is a book written in 1913 by Jacques Straub - if you know of an earlier version, please let me know. The Rye and Sloe Gin cocktail recipe then appears in a few cocktail books afterwards into the late 1940s and then starts to peter out. It could be that smaller cocktails that consist of just alcohol lost favour to cocktails with juices, sugar, and bitters.
    Really was serious when I said that I'd like to collab with these channels:
    @Whiskey Vault @Whiskey Tribe @It's Bourbon Night
    Black Hawk Cocktail as it appears in the 1913 Straub's Manual:
    ½ Jigger Rye Whiskey
    ½ Jigger Sloe Gin
    Stir
    1 Cherry
    We also try this cocktail with a couple of homegrown independent spirits from @Distillerie du St.Laurent and @Dillon's Small Batch Distillers
    Here is the 2011 Robert Hess video I reference: • Black Hawk Cocktail - ... You'll notice his later 1970s recipe uses lemon juice, and he comments that it's a little too tart.
    We no longer do sponsorships or paid promotions of any kind; we tried it a couple of times but it never felt right. So if you want to support us, please subscribe, watch, comment and like the videos; maybe even go a step farther and recommend them to your friends and family. This channel is nothing without you our viewers! Thanks for watching the Old Cookbook Show and our Historical Cooking.

    Thanks for watching everyone! Some of the later versions of this cocktail add a little bit of lemon juice... Have you ever had a Black Hawk Cocktail? Would you give this one a shot, and do you know anymore about the history?

      I've actually made this before, and rather liked it. That said, your earlier commentary about it being a little imperfect or simple, and strong depending on your choice of drink, is pretty well spot on.
      Which is why what I usually do when making this, I use it as the base for an Old Fashioned and it comes out wonderfully that way. You get all the notes you're expecting and were enjoying in your drinks with the Basil Hayden and Dillons, while adding just a slight bit more sweetness and a touch more complexity depending on your choice of bitters.
      I've also made this drink with both rye and bourbon (mostly because once or twice I didn't have the rye), and I've found that rye does work better on a personal note. I find that depending on your choice of bourbon, it can be a little too smokey and kind of overpower the sloe's fruitiness, making it even more whisky-forward than the 1792 that you were using and didn't care much for.

      I could see adding a shot of lemon juice. For my taste, with cheap sloe gin (not gonna pay over $30 for Hayman's sloe gin, and up, for the 3 other sloe gins at a local liquor store), and a decent bourbon: this tastes like a sweet Manhattan. I only made a 3/4 Oz recipe of the 2 ingredients, so it's possible drinking a larger drink might make been too sweet, but it isn't bad and next time I splurge, I'll pick up a decent rye and try that, I think it will be worth trying that variation. I think, too, trying it with club soda and lemon, turning it into a fizz might turn out to be a refreshing summer taste.🤷‍♂️

      @@travisadams4470 , if you like those flavors, this will be enjoyable, there won't be any gin notes you'll find. It really comes across as a sweet Manhattan, I think. I haven't tried it on the rocks, so that might be too sweet, based on the strained, neat cocktail of this. imo

    Sloe gin was the starter non-beer alcohol for under age drinkers when I was in high school and college in the 1970s. I can’t say that I’ve known anyone of legal age to drink it.

      I think the half pint bottle my first husband left with me when we divorced was his 1970s under age bottle. I would have a very occasional half shot, neat, until the bottle was gone in the early 2000s. As I remember, it tasted just like cough syrup.
      Now I wish I had that bottle still ... I love simple rye-based cocktails. One of my favorites? "Rye Manhattan, served on a big rock". I bet I'd enjoy this a lot.

    Try a sloe royale - a glass of champagne or other sparkling white wine with a slug of sloe gin. Delicious. Sloe gin, damson gin and other berry gins (e.g. blackberry, raspberry) are quite common and traditional in Yorkshire where I live. In particular people forage for sloes or blackberries in hedgerows and then make a flavoured gin. I'm currently making a batch of damson gin, should be ready for Christmas. Avoid the big brands, seek out the small local specialist producers if you want to buy. I named one in a comment, and I think my comment was deleted as advertising (fair enough, but I'm only an enthusiastic drinker of that particular brand). A very delicious drink on its own or mixed. Enjoy!

  • @markiangooley
    @markiangooley ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I’m told that sloes are relatively common in Britain and presumably one could just add fresh ones to gin and let them soak a bit. I gather they’re like small plums. I’ve also heard of bartenders adding blackcurrant syrup to gin as a sloe gin substitute if someone wants a straight drink of sloe gin but they haven’t any.

    • @helenpetrie892
      @helenpetrie892 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      To make sloe gin you prick the sloes all over and then add them to a jar of gin with some sugar. You store the jar in a dark, cool place for two to three months, turning the jar every couple of days. I'm currently making damson gin by the same method. I live in Yorkshire, where sloe and damson gin (homemade) are quite common.

      @the8ctagon ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@helenpetrie892 Snap! As a child in the Midlands in the late 70s and early 80s, my brother and I were dragged out to local hedgerows on Saturdays and Sundays by our parents and "encouraged" to help fill plastic carrier bags with sloes, which they then washed, pricked with a "prongy" fork, dumped into empty gin bottles with some sugar, and topped up with some of the gin that had just vacated the bottles. I don't know why they were briefly obsessed with sloe gin: there seems to be no family history of it, and they've never explained it. (I've just realised I've never asked them why we were put through this, and that is now on my to-do list.) It's a different (interesting) taste, for sure, but the added sugar makes it more of a liqueur, which doesn't really agree with my palate, and it's a lot of effort to go to to make a syrup that doesn't get you any more drunk than neat gin, but with added calories. Maybe it featured in an episode of The Good Life.

    My maternal uncle owned a bar in Iowa from about 1950 to his death in 1985. He had a drink called the Hawkeye (for University of Iowa Hawkeyes) that was made from Plum Gin and Old Overholt Rye Whiskey. He used Old Overholt because that was where he was born (West Overton, PA) and the Plum Gin was probably Seagrams since it would have been easily available in which he steeped Prunes he got from my mother, as my parents had a plum orchard and she dried literally hundreds of pounds of the things every year. I never understood why it was called a Hawkeye, but seeing this Blackhawk it now sort of makes sense.

    Great video, going to try this tonight! I think the reason the original formula (recipe) used rye is because of the spicy quality of that whiskey to balance out the sweetness of the Sloe Gin. Bourbon can be very sweet and maybe it was just too much with the sloe gin. There is no bitter profile in this at all so that might be a nice way to balance out the bourbon version and make more complex variation. A hit of ango, orange bitters, or maybe even peychaud bitters (anise forward) might be interesting to change it up and see where it goes.
    I am in Manitoba and Hayman’s is the only Sloe Gin we have too and it’s not bad. I do a variation on a Gimlet where I do 1oz gin, 1oz sloe gin, 1oz of lime cordial (home made) and top with club soda. Very refreshing tall drink.

    Fascinating video. Great analysis. In the States, at least 40 years ago, a Sloe Gin Fizz was the go-to cocktail for those of us who wanted a cocktail because our barely legal selves thought it was something "grown ups with panache" drank and our palettes thought a Manhattan tasted like gasoline. I just remember it being so sweet it would curl your toes. Hadn't thought of sloe gin since. Basil Hayden (FYI BAY-sul) is a fine Kentucky straight bourbon with some ever so slightly lighter notes that may pair in a different manner than a rye, which I also like in a mixed drink. I am now intrigued enough by this cocktail that I may have to investigate sloe gin again. Blackthorn berries (sloes) are another fascinating story... but not for today! Great show, as always.

    Hi Glen!
    If you have a chance to get your hand on local Quebec gins, especially Menaud or Radoune, you will be in for a treat. Cheers!

    I never knew where the Nick & Nora glasses originated from. Just cloudy sometimes. Thin Man series

    Julie... sometimes I am concerned when there are two alcohols together and I just go "yee".
    Got one for ya. The Mexican chicken. That would be tequila and Wild Turkey
    Then there is the Fried Mexican Chicken which is basically a Mexican Chicken with a layer of 151 Rum on top that is the lit.
    Yup... these are as bad as they sound 😀.
    I also am very skeptical that there would even be a recipe for them in any of these recipe books 😉

    Late 60's, early 70's in Maryland, Sloe Gin Fizz was a popular girly drink. That means sweet, I guess. I never tasted it.

    At the very end I thought it was a still shot, then I heard you questioning the definition of the still. So it was a still still shot.

    I never occurred to me that you could buy commercially produced Sloe Gin. It's always been a homemade drink to me. My mum, my grandmother, cousins made Sloe Gin. You could buy it from the WI market but that was home made too, just someone else mum.
    From being roped in to pick the sloe's, to helping bottle it up as a child it's always been there. Heck, I got a small bottle of Sloe Gin last Christmas from my mum, she's in her mid-eighties and still makes Sloe Gin.
    (Damson Gin is also very nice)
    Here's a question, do you get sloe's in the hedgerows in Canada?

    Hmmm...
    I'm sort of scared of gin because of a very bad experience with it in my younger days. But I might try this if I can get sloe gin.
    Both my cocktail books include this, pretty much exactly as you made it. Old Mr. Boston, originally from 1935, and my copy is a 1966 printing; and a third edition of The Bartender's Black Book, 1994 & 2012.

    Great video about a liqueur that plagued my childhood weekends because I was required to help my parents pick the sloes to make it at the weekend, but didn't get to taste the end-product, being a minor. What inspired Jules's wardrobe choice today?

    This was so great! A scene from Absolutely Fabulous popped into my head while watching this.. if you search 'Absolutely Fabulous France' the scene I remember might come up. Hilarious. Nobody falls down as well as Eddie and Patsy!!!

    I thought one of the reasons sloe gin sort of disappeared was a lack of sloe berries. I read that a lot of the sloe gins in the US aren’t actually made with the correct berries.

    Something they might serve at the Overlook Hotel?
    I always referred to it as the mixture of ingredients.

    You can buy Sloe Gin ready made in the UK, I know Gordons sell their own version. A lot of people who like it make their own (Sloes dont appear in large quantities every year) I think it disappeared out of Cocktail use as it went out of fashion.
