  • Irish Whiskey?? Ink Street Cocktail - Cocktails After Dark
    We haven't really explored many Irish Whiskey Cocktails yet - so today we'll be mixing a 1930s prohibition era Irish whiskey cocktail two ways: one with Writers Tears, and one with Glendalough.
    Ink Street Cocktail
    1 part Irish Whisky
    1 part Orange Juice
    1 part Lemon Juice.

      @@pflick13 it’s a hard ck sound. Glendalough is the anglicised version of the Irish place name “Gleann Dá Loch” which means valley of two lakes.

    I'm not a huge whisky fan (to the shame of my family...our 3x great grandfather founded the Glenmorangie distillery in Scotland), but I am a citrus fan, so I would absolutely drink this, even as is. But it could probably benefit from some simple syrup, and cutting the lemon a little.

    Actually brought back a bottle of the Whiskey too. Very tasty stuff, especially neat

    Until about 2007 there were only three active distilleries in Ireland (Middleton, Bushmills and Cooley distilleries), so a lot of the establish brands are from them. However since 2007 this has grown to over 40 distilleries. What adds to the confusion is while their stock is maturing some of the new distilleries have released whiskies under their own branding that they have bought from other distilleries, and it's not usually clear they have done this. For example Glendalough opened in 2013, but you can buy 17 year old whisky from them. I'm not too fussed about the practice though I'd prefer if it was clearer which whiskies had been sourced from elsewhere, so credit to Writers Tears for being up front about it

    I might be an Irish whiskey pleb, but I bought a bottle of Jameson select reserve a while back and quite enjoyed it as a sipper. I've had both regular Jameson and tullamore dew and much prefer Jameson. I find it to be an affordable alternative to scotch whiskey. Pretty good in a hot toddy.

    Glen, I ran into your dopelganger a couple weeks ago. It turns out he is a physician, working nights at a hospital in Boise Idaho. He admitted me and saw me multiple times over the course of my stay until his days off came along. He asked me why I smiled at him so much and I told him he reminded me of my favorite youtuber/food historian, which raised his cool quotient. He laughed. So if you’re looking for your twin, he is working nights in Boise ID. 😂😂

    I don't see sourced spirits as a red flag. Lots of American bourbon is sourced, so long as they are forthcoming about sourcing. About the cocktail, some simple syrup would probably go a long way.

    Yeah, Lemon and Orange juice 2:1 with the Irish Whiskey and without simple syrup - doesn't seem very balanced. Maybe stronger whisky (Islay Scotch?) with less juice and some simple could work...

    We tried it, subbing in gin, but the citrus completely overwhelmed the gin too. I suspect the equal parts lemon and orange just makes a super team that will dominate nearly anything.

    I am pretty sure a smokier whisky would have a totally different result. Better? I don’t know but I think there needs to something to overcome that citrus which I think could be cut way down. There is a cocktail at a local restaurant here that I was told all the ingredients for but not the ratios. I think it took 4 attempts to get the ratios correct and maybe some more could be done but it tastes enough like the original now. All this to say that even with the right ingredients it sometimes just takes tweaking to get a good result.

    Hmmm. Maybe too citrus-ey for a drink you'd have at the bar at night, but not for a stereotypical newspaper reporter who would need to think about morning drinking options. It seems likely that this drink is a bit of a wink to the hard-drinking reputation of Fleet Street newspaper reporters. Whether it would be hair of the dog, or just an early start on the next day's libations... who's to say?!

  • @AntiDot70
    @AntiDot70 ปีที่แล้ว

    Irish whiskey... right. It's just like French or Italian wines named after the vineyard/distillery. It's a bottomless pit of choices where no one is a winner and everyone has their preferred best brand. I've tried many recommendations and found very few I liked by someone else's standards. Honestly, go with what YOU want regardless of the country, source, distillery, location, process, barrel, etc. You are the customer of your own pallet.

      @annl.8909 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure and for certain... we're a small country with a huge variety of accents. You can drive west to east in 3 hours, and the accents are wildly different... in the wild and woolly west we call it Glenda-lock, further north it would be more like glaine-da-loch, and over in glendalough itself, I think they pronounce it more glenduh-lock...

  • @oskar_the_black
    @oskar_the_black ปีที่แล้ว

    It doesn't taste good because there isn't enough whiskey nor any sugar to round out the booze and tartness.
    A better recipe would be:
    2 oz Irish whiskey
    1 oz lemon juice
    1 oz orange juice
    1/2-2/3 oz simple syrup
    Essentially, a classic sour without the egg white or bitters

    • @GlenAndFriendsCooking
      @GlenAndFriendsCooking  ปีที่แล้ว

      This recipe is fairly indicative of cocktail recipes up through the late 1930s - most of the 'classics' as we now know them don't really become 'classics' until post WW2

    Sourced Whiskey isn’t necessarily a problem but it’s almost never a positive. There’s some great producers that make whiskeys for dozens of brands, but the downside is those brands will tend to all taste a little too much alike so many whiskeys “connoisseurs” aren’t a fan of it. The best whiskeys are virtually never sourced, but the worst whiskeys are also likely not sourced.
