Great test! I think they seem pretty close, although in the input gain for AT5 may be a little low. I’ve noticed I often need to crank the input more than other plugins to get an accurate response from it. Nicely done!
I've got the full AmplitTube 5 plus a number of the extra amp packs that was part of a fantastic deal they did a while back - buy a hardware product (I got a MIDI keyboard) and get 24 free pieces of software. So that swayed me in the direction of IK rather than NDSP. But I've found I can't get AmpliTube to give me the resonance, sustain and feel that I'd get from a real amp. Sometimes I feel like I can get a better high gain tone from even my ~15 year old Peavey Vypyr amp and that has very old digital modelling tech (to be fair choosing Peavey's own models on it are meant to be higher quality). So far I haven't been sure whether my problem is not having proper studio monitors and only going through PC speakers (decent speakers, but still a 2.1 sub/satellite set which I don't think is optimal for reproducing the sounds of a guitar cab speaker so I'm wondering whether some decent full range studio monitors will really make a difference). However it could just be that NDSP is better for the high gain tones. I've watched a number of demos of their plugins and have been impressed - the Nolly, Soldano, Petrucci and Fortin ones seem to in particular really manage the chunky high gain tone I like. For cleaner tones though, AmpliTube seems to do really well and there are a load more effects (stompboxes/rack FX) to play with. I suppose the best course of action is to trial the NDSP products and buy just one for now, so I can use that when I want the best high gain tone, and still have AmpliTube for the millions of other things it can do. Even if NDSP does work out significantly more expensive for what you get compared to the amazing deal I got from IK, sometimes quality over quantity really is worth it!
@@dreammachine86 I generally prefer the NDSP stuff BUT amplitube is massively overlooked and can achieve a lot of similar sounds (as in, no one would be able to accurately distinguish them). Amplitube needs a much louder input signal than NDSP, possibly as much as 12dB higher. Try boosting the input signal more than you would for Neural and see if it helps bring it to life
Thank you, sir! All of your comparison is really easy to watch and listen to. Please keep releasing this kind of video! P.s. Your play is awesome! I've got to practice 48 hours a day to play like you.
Thank you so very much Matthew, so cool of you, really appreciate it mate! Ha, glad you like the playing, Just a couple of hours a day and you’ll be playing better than me I’m sure 🤘🏻🍻
Nice demo and playing :) One thing I've noticed about Neural DSP and some other plugin manufacturers is that, to me, they always sound a bit compressed - compression that you normally wouldn't get from just an amp. I did some A-B tests of these plugins (also using the same GGD cabs and disabling all effects) and found that, with a little tweaking and added compression out front, I could get the Amplitube 5 IIC+ version to sound pretty much identical to the Neural IIC+ plugin. The biggest differences were that I found A5 to be a little less gained while at the same time being more "present". Neural DSP makes great plugins that sound awesome out-of-the-box with tons of great presets, but I personally find A5 wins out on realism with this one. It really depends on what you're looking for, I guess.
Thank you Jeremy, really appreciate it mate. Your findings regarding these 2 plugins are identical to mine, although very close, the Neural version is more gained up and "metal-ready" straight of the box, this can be compensated by increasing the input gain on the A5 version, but the A5 still ends up having a slightly different texture and less compression after tweaking. IK Multimedia has kinda won me over, Neural DSP plugins used to have my fav amp sims, but nowadays I find myself using Amplitube 5 and ToneX more frequently.
Great comparison. I seem to constantly hear a top end sizzle in the IK sims that it's not there in the Neural counterparts and that I happen to like. It's the same sizzle you get from a mic'd amp and it helps a lot in a mix.
I just tried to make a sort of metallica tone on AT5 with the IIC+, and it just didn’t do it, it doesn’t ”chug” if you know what I mean. Palm muted chords sounds like a clean amp with a broken speaker. I’m gonna try the free trial tonight with the neural plugin.
You might have better luck with the Neural plugin, it has more gain straight out of the box. I quite like the AT5 version, but you have to increase input gain on the plugin or add a boost in front for it to saturate the same way the Neural plugin does 👍🏻

I think I prefer the Amplitube version, I think that if you threw a screamer in front of it with some proper compression then some well placed EQ with a decent set of IR's you'd be better off than with the Neural version.
