I exit an (L) Train at the Canarsie - Rockaway Parkway Station and walk along Rockaway Parkway to the edge of Brooklyn at Canarsie Pier.
    From Wikipedia:
"Canarsie (/kəˈnɑːrsi/ kə-NAR-see) is a working- and middle-class residential and commercial neighborhood in the southeastern portion of the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City, United States. Canarsie is bordered on the east by Fresh Creek Basin, East 108th Street, and the BMT Canarsie Line (L train); on the north by Linden Boulevard; on the west by Remsen Avenue to Ralph Avenue and the Paerdegat Basin; and on the south by Jamaica Bay. It is adjacent to the East Flatbush, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, and East New York neighborhoods.
The area near Canarsie was originally settled by the Canarse Native Americans. The community's name is adapted from a Lenape word meaning "fenced area". After European settlement, Canarsie was initially a fishing community, but became a popular summer resort in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By the late 1930s and early 1940, the resorts had been destroyed, and Canarsie was developed as a largely white Italian American and Jewish suburb. In the 1970s, racial tensions developed around an argument over the zoning of the area's schools, and in the aftermath, Canarsie became a mainly black neighborhood with a high Caribbean and West Indian population in the late 1990s.
Canarsie is part of Brooklyn Community District 18 and its primary ZIP Codes are 11234 and 11236. It is patrolled by the 69th Precinct of the New York City Police Department. Politically it is represented by the New York City Council's 42nd and 46th Districts."

Canarsie Pier with its seagulls everywhere and view, which is so pleasing to eyes as waves move in water into a dance. Time is time and we see is time and we keep in our minds, even as moment of wonder. That island across the bay from Canarsie pier was Canarsie pol. I had to spend a night there after falling overboard on a ski Bob that I tried to take there. Fell off and it drifted away. I made it 2/3rds of the there before I fell off and had to swim the rest of the way. Thought I was going to drowned till I felt my feet touch the bottom and thanked god. I couldn’t signal anyone for help before it was too far away. I wound up sleeping there till morning came and I went around the island to look for anything that can float. Found rope and a bunch of big foam boards and tied them together and left the island. It was hell trying to fight the currents to get back but luckily a guy in a small boat passed by and seen me and picked me up and took me back. I was grateful for that

Took the LIRR to the '64 World's Fair quite a few times w my friends, attended Mets games at Shea including the longest doubleheader in MLB history 5/31/64 (2nd game was 23 innings). Perhaps quite a few folks would like a tour of what still remains if you ever get out that way... :) Also Greenwich Village of course, boy I bet that's changed, though I've read Cafe Wha! and a few of the other clubs have hung on....

Boy, Bayview Houses and the walk to the pier really surprised me. Bayview looks like crap. No more post and chain around the grassy areas, so the grass has lots of bare patches and weeds. The shrubs lining the parking lots look ratty. There's a lot of trash on the grass. I worked there from '81-'84 and Joe the Boss would never have let the grounds get that bad.
They installed chain link fencing along the walk to the pier, which looks like hell. It used to be very open.
