@Mrbfgray Flooding happens with rain at inch levels because it runs off and turns into.a flash flood river. Deserts don't soak into the dirt enough. It completely depends on the type of dirt in that area. Just be careful camping in a old dry lake bed during a rainy evening. I've seen a BLM lakebed turn into a mini lake overnight, stranding people
You're definitely going to be one of the last visitors to Death Valley for a few months. From what I've read, the park took heavy damage to the infrastructure and roads. The desert itself is fine, since occasional massive rainstorms help shape it over time. I also was slightly tempted to go visit, but my risk aversion is a tad higher! Thanks for doing what sensible people won't, because this footage was amazing.
Yeah, the highway near Towne Pass was completely washed away with a slide and much of the park roads are in disrepair. It was amazing to see the landscape being sculpted, thanks for watching :)

Thank you for sharing your adventure. At 2:00 the closed caption said "The first tropical storm here in 85 years." Maybe the rains and flooding of August 2022 weren't considered a tropical storm but they were nothing to sneeze at. All roads in the park were closed and, on 8/05/22 the rain gauge recorded 1.70 inches, making this the rainiest day in recorded history at the Furnace Creek weather station. In just a few hours, the park received three-quarters of its 2.20-inch annual average rainfall.
A once in 85 year (a lifetime) event! I was wondering what was going on in Death Valley during Hilary, so thanks for WELL documenting it, glad you made it safe. I think you were once of those guys we passed in Alaska in our motorhome this past summer, lol!
Outstanding job at bike packing Death Valley. Carrying all the water you need must have been something. Even then I'm guessing it was dicey. Most folks in the machine age have no idea an adventure like that really is. Congrats.

Could not help but notice that your windshield cracked sometime during this adventure .... Hope the Prius is doing well now! I drove to Death Valley in late June this year before Hilary hit and cracked my windshield during that trip too (questionable actions on my part, hot wind shield and chilly water do not mix). Thanks for documenting!. Rain is Death Valley is scant, but whenever there is a decent downpour, flooding is common. After a decent winter rainy season wildfllowers that have been dormant for decades appear in the spring. I don't know the effect of a rarer event of a summer storm. 13 years ago a summer downpour from tropical moisture washed out highway 395 west of Death Valley. Had to take kids camping to Kennedy Meadows rather than Mammoth vicinity.
How are you trying to encourage people to rock tumble rocks off and over a few what do you think it would look like if everyone did this very poor judgment

Drove through the Death Valley area a couple weeks ago and it was still wet and there were bodies of water that I bet were probably rarely ever seen in said locations

I've made countless trips to and through Death Valley since my first time in 1962, mostly via motorcycle. Several years ago I took my wife there for a concert at Scotty's Castle. We are currently planning on a roadtrip to visit the UFO museum in Roswell, NM, and will again pass through Death Valley at least one way.

Have you hiked telescope peak in DV. View of bad water basin, lowest in lower states you can see Mt Whitney highest point in the lower states. An epic view i think.
Lovely video, but you really should consider swapping for a Toyota Land Cruiser. It would make the drive a bit safer. I own a 99 with 500,000 miles on it. Love the 395 shots at the end and the rock rolling scenes.
I have to say being out in the desert in conditions like these is - beyond dangerous - but then again maybe that's why you went in a Prius no less than that! Glad you survived.
I went to Death Valley on Aug 27, all road are closed, the rangers are there to tell everyone the whole park is closed and go back. All we can do is to have a family photo in front of the park sign. I guess the park is officially closed on that day. We arrived Las Vegas on Aug 26 in the evening and did not see park close annoucement, maybe we forgot to check?
It’s called Lake Manley when it Has a significant amount of Water in it. I lived in Vegas for A number of years in the 80s and 90s and got to witness Firsthand how Death Valley Could go from zero to oh my God in a very short time!!
If any of the park rangers had caught you tumbling those rocks you would have gotten some huge fines. I’ve spent 6 months in DV as a camp host, and had many conversations with the Rangers there. And the one thing they really don’t negotiate on is ANY destruction of the natural environment/habitat. If you drive off designated roads and trails for example, and they catch you, they MEASURE to the inch how far out AND back you traveled and fine you accordingly. At government rates and speed to recover the damage inflicted.
Julian you seem like a very nice young man, and as a no longer so young man I admire your adventures. I did many of the same things as you. Please allow me to pass a few words of wisdom. I’ll try to be brief. This regards a tragedy that I was very close to in the US Army National Training Center which is located in remote, rugged desert terrain to the west of Death Valley. It was the early 1990’s, during summer monsoon season. Yes, there are summer monsoons in the Mojave Desert. I was a member of the Army’s Opposing Forces, stationed there for 2 years. During a routine training exercise afternoon thunderheads came out of nowhere. Lots of thunder, and the sky turned black. The Brigade that we were training at the time had been maneuvering to create a blocking position against one of our Battalions. At that point everyone’s radios sqwacked with the order to CEASE THE EXERCISE AND STAND DOWN. Standard protocol in the face on monsoon weather and potential flash flooding. All vehicles and dismounted soldiers were placed on urgent notice to come out of arroyos (we used the middleast term “wadi’s”) and seek high ground immediately. About the time that the sky opened up a virtual wall of water hit an armored Bradley Fighting Vehicle that was traversing a wadi and had such immense power as to knock it on its side. Panic set in. The vehicle was commanded by the platoon leader, a young second lieutenant. The top hatch was open and crew members began to scramble out. Soon the flood turned into a major debris flow and boulders twice as large as that armored vehicle carried it about 70 meters and overturned it. You see the wadi narrowed and started miles away. The crew were beat up and suffered broken bones and other injuries. The saddest part was the young second lieutenant did not escape. Despite gallant efforts to retrieve and recover the vehicle, he died that day. I remember his name from the letter I wrote for the Brigade Commander to send to his family. If you want you can Google and find it, I’m sure you can because it’s a matter of record, but that’s not why I’m saying this. I’m saying this because it does happen, it’s a force of nature with awesome power. I pray you’ll heed this warning. 😢

I grew up in the Desert SouthWest and can affirm, that flash floods can be amazing to watch. Just don’t get surprised by one. Stay out of the draws when rain is present, or you see it off in the distance.
This was a great video of Death Valley National park that shows what happens in Death Valley during a very rare extremely severe rain storm. However this was a risky trip, this person could have gotten trapped by that severe rainstorm, especially by driving a Toyota Prius, instead of a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle. It is good that this person was able to make it out of Death Valley National Park. I have been to Death Valley many times, the few rain storms that I have seen last only about half an hour, just long enough to get the ground wet.
Park was closed 2 days before the storm and is still closed. 190 is still closed and might be closed for 3 months. All the resorts and camping is still closed also
Some nice shots but come on don't trundle rocks like that you will hurt or kill someone someday if you keep it up not to mention some people watching this will get the idea it's an acceptable thing to do.
I just popped a head gasket in my 275k mile prius c! I just got special gasket sealer from a guy who used to teach chemistry. Apparently it doesnt gunk up the cooling system! Ill let you know if it works. My friend that used to be a master mechanic told me these prius will pop a head gasket from 100k to 300k regardless of how well you take care of them!
Cool video-but I would likely avoid Death Valley during a hurricane. Don’t even want to ponder being stranded there or having car trouble in that area!
Cool video. I liked seeing the area that way. Last time we were there we wanted to do Titus Canyon. Road was closed do to flooding and we lucked out. They reopened it the last day we were there. Glad you didn't get swamped in one of those washes. I don't know about Cali but here in Arizona we have a law. If you get stuck in one of those flooded washes you pay a fine and costs of rescue. It's called the stupid motorists law. Don't hate me. I didn't name it! :)

Yes, I believe so, and at least for a year or two more! A previous flash flood completely destroyed the road!
My dad told me never camp near river....flash floods could sweep you away middle of night while you sleep in your tent

Have you hiked telescope peak in DV. View of bad water basin, lowest in lower states you can see Mt Whitney highest point in the lower states. An epic view i think.
Yes, I have! The view is incredible, it’s a good hike for summer since it’s far cooler at elevation, although it can be done any time of year.
Lovely video, but you really should consider swapping for a Toyota Land Cruiser. It would make the drive a bit safer. I own a 99 with 500,000 miles on it. Love the 395 shots at the end and the rock rolling scenes.
A Land Cruiser is a beast, I would totally get one!
I have to say being out in the desert in conditions like these is - beyond dangerous - but then again maybe that's why you went in a Prius no less than that! Glad you survived.
I went to Death Valley on Aug 27, all road are closed, the rangers are there to tell everyone the whole park is closed and go back. All we can do is to have a family photo in front of the park sign. I guess the park is officially closed on that day. We arrived Las Vegas on Aug 26 in the evening and did not see park close annoucement, maybe we forgot to check?
Yeah, it closed while I was there, on August 20th. Sorry you didn’t get to see the Valley :/ hope the rest of your trip went well though!

If any of the park rangers had caught you tumbling those rocks you would have gotten some huge fines. I’ve spent 6 months in DV as a camp host, and had many conversations with the Rangers there. And the one thing they really don’t negotiate on is ANY destruction of the natural environment/habitat. If you drive off designated roads and trails for example, and they catch you, they MEASURE to the inch how far out AND back you traveled and fine you accordingly. At government rates and speed to recover the damage inflicted.

Why I love California!
Julian you seem like a very nice young man, and as a no longer so young man I admire your adventures. I did many of the same things as you. Please allow me to pass a few words of wisdom. I’ll try to be brief. This regards a tragedy that I was very close to in the US Army National Training Center which is located in remote, rugged desert terrain to the west of Death Valley. It was the early 1990’s, during summer monsoon season. Yes, there are summer monsoons in the Mojave Desert. I was a member of the Army’s Opposing Forces, stationed there for 2 years. During a routine training exercise afternoon thunderheads came out of nowhere. Lots of thunder, and the sky turned black. The Brigade that we were training at the time had been maneuvering to create a blocking position against one of our Battalions. At that point everyone’s radios sqwacked with the order to CEASE THE EXERCISE AND STAND DOWN. Standard protocol in the face on monsoon weather and potential flash flooding. All vehicles and dismounted soldiers were placed on urgent notice to come out of arroyos (we used the middleast term “wadi’s”) and seek high ground immediately. About the time that the sky opened up a virtual wall of water hit an armored Bradley Fighting Vehicle that was traversing a wadi and had such immense power as to knock it on its side. Panic set in. The vehicle was commanded by the platoon leader, a young second lieutenant. The top hatch was open and crew members began to scramble out. Soon the flood turned into a major debris flow and boulders twice as large as that armored vehicle carried it about 70 meters and overturned it. You see the wadi narrowed and started miles away. The crew were beat up and suffered broken bones and other injuries. The saddest part was the young second lieutenant did not escape. Despite gallant efforts to retrieve and recover the vehicle, he died that day. I remember his name from the letter I wrote for the Brigade Commander to send to his family. If you want you can Google and find it, I’m sure you can because it’s a matter of record, but that’s not why I’m saying this. I’m saying this because it does happen, it’s a force of nature with awesome power. I pray you’ll heed this warning. 😢

I grew up in the Desert SouthWest and can affirm, that flash floods can be amazing to watch. Just don’t get surprised by one. Stay out of the draws when rain is present, or you see it off in the distance.
Yes, caution and having a plan is important, it’s an amazing thing to witness though!

This was a great video of Death Valley National park that shows what happens in Death Valley during a very rare extremely severe rain storm. However this was a risky trip, this person could have gotten trapped by that severe rainstorm, especially by driving a Toyota Prius, instead of a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle. It is good that this person was able to make it out of Death Valley National Park. I have been to Death Valley many times, the few rain storms that I have seen last only about half an hour, just long enough to get the ground wet.
Park was closed 2 days before the storm and is still closed. 190 is still closed and might be closed for 3 months. All the resorts and camping is still closed also

Yep, California has had a lot of crazy weather as of late!
Rain is uncommon, but whenever it does flooding is common. Geography in desert is alluvial fans rather than river channels.
Some nice shots but come on don't trundle rocks like that you will hurt or kill someone someday if you keep it up not to mention some people watching this will get the idea it's an acceptable thing to do.

I just popped a head gasket in my 275k mile prius c! I just got special gasket sealer from a guy who used to teach chemistry. Apparently it doesnt gunk up the cooling system! Ill let you know if it works. My friend that used to be a master mechanic told me these prius will pop a head gasket from 100k to 300k regardless of how well you take care of them!

Cool video. I liked seeing the area that way. Last time we were there we wanted to do Titus Canyon. Road was closed do to flooding and we lucked out. They reopened it the last day we were there. Glad you didn't get swamped in one of those washes. I don't know about Cali but here in Arizona we have a law. If you get stuck in one of those flooded washes you pay a fine and costs of rescue. It's called the stupid motorists law. Don't hate me. I didn't name it! :)

What part of never drive through standing water don't you understand. Also your mode of transportation, a hybrid compact car, is not the right choice of transportation in that environment. Thank you for the beautiful video though and please be more careful in the future.
