    So if Anor Londo was originally in a desert, that makes Carthus, the Sandworm in Smoldering lake and the Profaned Capital far more thematically consistent. Because in the game as released, you have all this eastern/Mediterranean theming next to a snowy tundra map.

      It would also make sense with the art for Dark Souls 3. The image of the Soul of Cinder looks like it features Anor Londo behind him, in a vast sandy wasteland. It makes sense to me that this was an idea that was scrapped in development.

      Yes and Archdragon peak was originally supposed to be part of Carthus and all snakemen there just happen to wear robes that one would wear in a desert.

      @MonteScarf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I would honestly prefer it if DS2 got that treatment first, but I would in no way object to DS3 getting it.
      Both games had so much more ambition and potential than was ever fully realised.
      Also: please don't entirely remove warping, walking all the way from Anor Londo to Firelink is NOT fun or challenging, it's just fucking tedious. More shortcuts, definitely, and a more interconnected map with fewer bonfires, but leave warping in. It saves so much time just trudging back through areas to go to vendors or farm earlier items

    • @Justinterpret
      @Justinterpret 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MonteScarf Honestly, I'd be down for either, too. 2 actually has some great narrative bits about hollowing and the state of amnesia that the world develops as a result. I don't know if 3's issues stemmed from too many options/indecisiveness or pushback in terms of finality.
      One thing that boggles my mind about 3 is when you see the original leaked screenshots, they had such a great DARK fantasy atmosphere. The washed out lighting and yellow tones of the final release don't look anywhere near as atmospheric as that early build, in my opinion.

  • @Nitenshi

    So, basically, the DLC are a mashup of all the cut content. Like the Wolf ending in the Painting and the Ringed City being a mix between the Grave of the Gods and what would have happened in Irithyll. I feel like the Ringed City makes more sense now... Like the developpers had ideas in mind they didn't put in the game, so we have no clue they are here, but they still consider them. That's why the game make little sense.
    Also, the Yuria line "and now the Gods are no more" seems interesting now we know there were supposed to be a Grave of Gods.

    I'd like to correct you on epitaphs. They translate as:
    "Man who sought the royal throne, here he lies. Blood did not acknowledge him." (王座を求めた男、ここに眠る。血が彼を認めることなかった)
    "Take the blood. In order to help the declined royal family" (血を受け入れよ。滅びゆくの王家の助けとならんが為に)
    There's another epitaph in Irithyll which says:
    "Hail the Dragon. Those who desire for the way to the King must not collapse halfway." (竜を讃えよ。王への道を欲すならば道半ばで倒れることなかれ)
    It now makes a lot more sense if you had to come there in order to find a way to Twin Princes and/or Oceiros. Although I was sure this is a reference to Thrones of Lords of Cinder. I wonder if Wolnyr/Yhorm had an artifact (basin?) among his pile of treasures which you'd need to plunder.
    And it makes A LOT of sense that pilgrims would be looking for something called God's Grave. Especially if it's Londor pilgrims looking for Manus' grave. HOWEVER! The epitaph in the Undead settlement tells: "obsession towards climbing the High Wall. Will pilgrims' souls reach beyond it after sacrificing their lives?" which makes me think: were they coming to God's Grave to transform into angels (Oceiros as an angel, huh?) or butterfly or maybe into those dragons Lance shown us and fly high towards Lothric Castle?
    29:20 Well, the Divine Blessing description says that Queen of Lothric gave birth to Ocellote, so he most probably was his actual kid.
    Regarding the Boreal Valley. Does it say anywhere that the falling particles ares snow? The valley is Frigid, it is Boreal, but not snowy. There's no Sun to bring warmth, so it's frozen. I think that it's the actual ash that [made] look whitish, because of the unique lighting of the place. Because I must admit it looks cool.
    PS: this video has been up for 1.5 months? I feel myself a Gundyr Belated.

    • @tomhaswell6283
      @tomhaswell6283 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Regarding Ocellote, in this Alpha version of the game the white dragon would not be Oceiros. So if Ocelotte was part of the royal family, he wouldn't be the white dragons child.

    • @kaymarciy
      @kaymarciy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, that's debatable. According to Lance, the cutscene with the white dragon and its child was one of the first things recorded for the game, preceding most of the other lore. And in the cutscene the dragon clearly calls the child Ocelotte. It's just that the the dragon wasn't known under the name of Oceiros yet.

    • @tomhaswell6283
      @tomhaswell6283 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@kaymarciy No, The White Dragon was located in Gods Grave, a scrapped area and he would have been called Angel Dragon. Gundyr was called 'Old King Oceiros' back then. This indicates that Ocelotte was not intended to be part of the royal family but still the son of the Angel Dragon.

    • @kaymarciy

    This is a great video but really throws me into confussion about how I feel about DS3. I still think it's a great game (and arguably my favorite DS game) but it's clear that the game and its narrative went through some huge changes.
    Just the idea of not making the two Princes fight the penultimate boss fight shifts my perspective in how they could have designed the first area. One of the big complaints by lots of fans (not me) was the linear nature of the game. But opening up the entire lotheric castle from the start, attach the Cemetery of Ash somehow physically to the castle and then instead of access the God Grave through the Princes boss fight do it via the consumed King's Garden (filled with Pus of Man, toxic area AND a Dark Gem all signifyng what might lie below). Suddenly you have a much more sprawling non-linear and vertical map design that's more similar to DS1.
    Also interestin how much bridges play an important role in DS3. They're everywhere. I even think Archdragon Peak looks like a bridge. In the Profaned Capital the route to Yhorm is at the end of a large bridge.

These are things that feel missing just by playing the game , who knows how much will be found with data mining. Somehow despite the mess at the end of DS1 (how unfinished lost Izalith is, etc ) It feels like the game with the most amount of lore and world building that actually made into the final game - or at least things that did make it in the game seem to make the most sense (among all the games)

    • @Hoopla10
      @Hoopla10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I do wonder why they made the changes. Whether it was simply that Miyazaki felt his story for DS3 (Aldrich and the Pontiff) wouldn't work as well with these other ideas. I'm not sure it would be better, just different.
      You can see Anor Londo and bits of Irithyll from Vordts boss room (it's beyond the Abyss Watchers boss room). It's not night time though. Why it's not the same could be argued at the original Anor Londo if you shoot Gwynevere and then return to Undead Burg and look up. It's inconstistent I guess.

The Oceiros Garden was to the left of Lotric Castle (looking from the Firelink Shrine behind it) and led to the third bridge to the Archdragon peak where behind another bridge one of the ancient trees was.

    Here are my thoughts after hearing this as to how the change happened, not that probably anyone cases...
    Original game before the changes in the final version was about the royal line trying to link the flame, with Lothric and Lorian not wanting to link the fire, Oceiros trying to have another child to fulfill the destiny, and the Queen fleeing it all. The Lords of Cinder would be kind of time shifty like going back to deal with Manus, only with three groups people who were consumed by flame to restart the cycle, but who didn't continue their line after, as what seems to be happening to the line of Ocerios, and the underlying theme of the whole thing is "Legacy and continuation"
    But at some point in the development, the theme changes from legacy to stagnation. To the question of if it was better to fight to keep doing a thing or better to blow it all up so something new can come.
    And this is when Sulyvahn was developed and assets were shifted. Sulyvahn has never experienced loss and is terrified and even outraged by the idea of destroying his entire world simply to make room for another. As a counter narrative to the Players goal of linking the Flame, his role was to stop each of the Lords from ending the age of fire, and instead attempting to hold everything in place, which leads to the theme of Stagnation. He exits the painting into Anor Londo, likely with Yorshka who Gwendolin believes to be his long lost sister/half sister/whatever the hell happened with all that Gwyn family drama...and Sully convinces him that linking the fire is now a bad thing, and becomes head of the Church thanks to a direct line to the last of the old Gods and his bringing a new "God" from the painted world (It is the Church of Yorshka after all)
    Yhorm is tricked into genocide, the Abyss Watchers have the subgroup designed to stop them from the loop they are stuck somehow end up trapped in Ariendel, and after Aldrich becomes the cannibal murderhobo child disposal of the church (likely eating the children of the undead for population control).
    But as things stagnate, they rot and decay. the Awakening bell throws a wrench into everything by bringing back the old Lords, Aldrich escape his tomb, likely flooding the church and poisoning the swamp on the way out, and made his way to Anor Londo to consume Gwyndolin, who hides Yorshka from him physically, but not in his dreams.
    When we arrive, Aldrich is trying to stop Aldrich, and perhaps rescue Gwyndolin, but also sees us as a threat to link the flame...which would also destroy his home...
    This would actually be a coherent story, with the theme being the battle between stagnation and destruction. Smoughtown did an interesting video recently about the Deep and Sumarian lore that also really connected all this for me...or I'm rambling, either way, great video. Thanks!

    It's always interesting to hear some info about parts of the game that were cut.
    Makes me think that if the dev team would follow their original plan, then DaS3 wouldn't have all those huge plot holes. Like the mystery behind firelink set, for example.

    Okay, the references to Irithyll Dungeon (or at least, the location that would eventually be repurposed as Irithyll Dungeon) got me curious. I assume this is *before* the map layout got closer to how it is in the final game? I remember some comments about how Irithyll, at one point, would have been accessible from two different paths, one of which was the one from Irithyll Dungeon (which is why Big Boi Doggo attacks you there too), but that sounds incompatible with the layout of the map and overall story structure Richard is talking about on the podcast.
    I mean, it's pretty hard to come up with a definitive answer and sometimes even developers don't remember all of the nuances of the iterations projects go through, but I'm curious if there's any kind of consensus/opinion in the community of data miners about this.
    P.S. : I understand why JSF trusts the QA leak from 4chan, because a lot of that stuff lines up with datamined stuff, but I always thought the stuff about Kaathe bursting through the hole in Lothric Castle was suspicious as hell. I suppose it's possible a QA tester who also posts on 4chan would make up trolly bits on the assumption that people would expect it based on other correct information or that the event actually was planned and I'm suspicious over nothing.

    This is one of my favorite videos you two have released but it makes me almost mad at From or whoever made them rush this out. Every time a discussion pops up around the cut content of a souls game those feelings come up, but with 3 it's the worst. It feels like all the cut content and everything pieced together about what the story was SUPPOSED to be would've been a much better ending for the souls series.
    We all know 3 was the end and there isn't more coming, so why on earth did they feel the need to cut so much and rush this out :( it's fuckin depressing.

    • @SinclairLore
      @SinclairLore  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Looking back on it with more info, it looks like the older version of the story was never really finished, it was just a series of notes / ideas about where they wanted to take it. The version of the story we ended up getting was, as far as we know, the only version that actually had a script, characters etc. properly finalised. Still not sure why they went in the direction they did, though.

    For some reason hearing what DS3 could have been aggravates me a lot more than hearing what DS2 could have been. I enjoyed DS2 a lot more, but there's something about DS3 that sounds so much more like wasted potential to me.
    Maybe because DS2 changed directions mid-way and was formed into a different story than what they initially started. But DS3 sounds like it was chopped up and reassembled with very little story change just because they got cold feet about ending the series for good. (Or were told they couldn't)

    Something that really confuses me about all of this cut content and reshuffling is the game just really confuses me. Seems like the prior versions of the game where better and made more sense? I mean it’s almost as if they had a relatively sensical story so From just went “oh shit! Shuffle the deck!” The game has to be convoluted!!
    I’m starting to think that from and the director (Miyazaki? I’m bad with names) just don’t make great stories.

      Miyazaki returned to the Dark Souls III team in March 2015 as lead director when the game was already 2 years in development according to an interview from June 2015. A bunch of this stuff was scrapped before he even he joined.
      Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura handled the project until Miyazaki hopped back in after Bloodborne. Miyazaki also stated the Bloodborne team and DaS 3 teams were different.
      It’s extremely likely that once he joined in, at the final year, he didn’t like the direction of the game and decided to change course.
