I'd love to have one... and live near a UP track with a nearly abandoned (largely abandoned, actually. only a short section is used) spur off that line. Would love to have one of these locos and a unused passenger car as a house. Would loan the loco to UP if they needed the extra, they may have to refuel first though (would move a couple of feet to keep it moving and run for power, horn, etc).
Might be a just doctor visit for some of them. Some might get rebuilt . Arkansas is where the major locomotive shop is. And, they are heading in that direction.
See my other comment below. It's a "funeral train" for all the retired Union Pacific locomotives. They either went to the auction in St. Louis, or they were all picked and pulled apart.
just like the railroaders at the end of steam. Thinking the same thing. Old and obsolete soon to be very valuable and cherished. No doubt 10-30 years from now these wont be looked at as scrap. Like all older locomotives before it. If they survive the torch they are cherished
I wonder if this has anything to do with the sale of 60 UP locomotives auction. I don't think these were scrapped at all. June 20, 2013, "60 Union Pacific locomotives sell in 40 minutes at East St. Louis auction" Google that article. "They drew a crowd of about 50 men to bid as well as a few bidders online and on the phone. It took about an hour and 40 minutes to sell the locomotives that went from $18,000 to more than $300,000 a piece." "A 1979 SD40-2 sold for $90,000."
how much would one of these big guys auction for anyways? I remember being a kid and wanting one to stick in the backyard to play in, imagined spending hours sitting at the control stand pulling levers, yanking the horn cord, pretending to drive the thing with my railroader overalls and CP hat on. Oh to be young and foolish lol
DuelTruck you should look into just getting a cab, Interior and the controls for the setup in your backyard. There is a Doctor in KC that runs his H.O. Scale Layout with a F3 Cab and the whole interior for it. That's pretty cool.
Why not just sell these to short lines and other railroads? I'm sure they can be fixed up and sold. Especially the ex SP unit. If I had the money, I'd buy one!
Those weren't dead, too nice to be. They were probably being transferred to a leaser or just another yard. If you look close 2668 is almost new looking.
I worked for the Indiana and Ohio a shortline that bought 2 for a bargain price back in the 80s the shortline mechanics got to work and found that someone had intentionally plugged the fuel lines what they suspected during a strike They replaced the fuel lines and have 2 good units they’re using till this day
I would fire em all up same time and pull sapling stumps out with them..by the thousands..at the same time.. then head for the local tractor pull and clean house :)
I'm sure I could squeeze three in the back yard. I could two in my brothers yard, and I'm sure my father in law would be able to fit around 5 in his back yard. Come to think of it, I could put two in the front yard as well.
I don't get it y r they scrapping g these trains I mean all they need is the new paint job and upgrades or why not just keep the shells and use them for better needs
I'm getting old! I remember when the SD40-2 was the greatest new thing.
That Amtrak is savage, lights fully on while passing another train.
That was the EMOSTL. A bunch of more ex SP SD40M-2's are still stored at Monroe, LA.
I grew up near Thornton Junction I still remember the tower
yea its sad cuz the sd40 and 45 series are my favorite of all emd locomotives
Just went to Paducah, Kentucky last week and saw them some of them sitting at the NRE shops. They're all waiting to be either scrapped or rebuilt.

Great videos 👍🏼
@DESO718 This was symboled E-MOST, they are given a symbol based on their origin and destination
Over 20,000 steam locomotives died in Sterling at the Northwestern Mill. Remember the old saying "Sterling Brand Nails - A Locomotive In Every Box"
UP 2652 was saved by the Goderich & Exeter Railway (GEXR). It is a new unit they bought.
Who else is crying? Wish I could just adopt one!
I hear they're still popular with alot of smaller railways so it's possible that some of them would still be in service on one of those.
this truly awesome good shot my friend
Southern Pacific... The best rail company ever!!!
Might be a just doctor visit for some of them. Some might get rebuilt . Arkansas is where the major locomotive shop is. And, they are heading in that direction.
sick catch man that train came through Saint Louis about a week ago and i am suprised to see it finialy make it up to Chicago or there about.
Well, the SD40-2 units have better warranty, they're more reliable, etc.
UP 2652 is running on the GEXR now.
The horn matches the train (WHAT IS IT ANYWAY?) It is like saying that "WELL DONE LOCOS, YOUR JOB IS FINISHED, NOW IT IS TIME TO GO"
Some of the 45,s look in good shape

Ive seen 4124 before nice vid Larry!!
I noticed that they made a death march tune like a drum as they passed by.
Éire 1916 yeah
they could sell them to some of the smaller mines that still use trucks and keep them in service
That is quite a power move
Awesome
Wow, so many engines.

Many of these goto Silvas to the old CRIP facility to get a make over, or torn to pieces.
@russianspy52
It pains me to see old Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives covered in SP & UP markings.
Some of those engines look like they were just painted yesterday!

Not sure: they'd sell for around $100K at original value, I know that much.
Boxcarwillie S160 Way more, way more.
well then.
Shawn Calay A C40-8 can be had for around 50k

They still looked useful !!!
freighttrainsahpassing yup they do
Divide them amongst Genessee & Wyoming, Iowa Pacific, and Patriot Rail. They'll find use for them, especially on any underpowered lines they may have.
If your homeowners association asks, it's a lawn ornament.
Nice man!

A lot of these UP units look recently repainted?
That had all the excitement of watching grass grow.
Those weren't dead, too nice to be. They were probably being transferred to a leaser or just another yard. If you look close 2668 is almost new looking.
Some of them may be leased to short industry to be used as mules
I thought some of these made it to Estonia and other former Soviet Republics.
@DESO718 Nuh uh. Sterling is locomotive Aushwicz
Always a shame to see EMD's best handy work sent off for scrap. Wish they would have kept allot of those units/SD40's/SD40T/SD45T's etc.
Should be playing taps on the train horn.
im hoping to save a few WC SD45's myself.
Overhauled to -2 specs, so they should not be getting rid of these.
@boctfan i thought they just end up as scrap?
I wouldn't scrap these. I'm sure Ontario Northland Railway will have use for these.
they should have gave the SD45's to the Illinois railroad museum
Awesome!
What would make a locomotive qualify, for a funeral and final destination?
Having over a million miles on it? Wrecked in a derailment?
To much fuel burnt high maine ace cost ect.
Too bad. The SP units look neat!
Burlington Northern Modeler it was not sp it was up
@niselat what call sign do they use for the funeral trains?
why scrap them? just rebuild them
they were already rebuilt.
I worked for the Indiana and Ohio a shortline that bought 2 for a bargain price back in the 80s the shortline mechanics got to work and found that someone had intentionally plugged the fuel lines what they suspected during a strike They replaced the fuel lines and have 2 good units they’re using till this day
Nuclearation exactly look at my comment that's wat I was wondering
Depreciated equipment. It's a write off. Plus they need to meet the new requirements for emissions and noise.
What the Hell was that loud "snapping" sound? I've heard it on other locomotives... 1:20
Air bleeder valve, used to expell moisture in air lines.
Thanks... Been wanting to thank you for that info.
ladys and gentleman the worlds slowest train
certainly hope you had a moment of silence as the SD45'S passed.
those sd45s locomotives are lot hoe lot better then toes sd70ace GEVO and what ever up buy these days
It's like their all m-u together.
Fort Worth and western railroad could have used those...
some went to NECR
I would fire em all up same time and pull sapling stumps out with them..by the thousands..at the same time.. then head for the local tractor pull and clean house :)
Oh I thought this was like for a dead body but now it’s just for engines
hey why do some trains have the bell ringing and some dont
The fact I can see you soon enough for you and your friends are like that you have a great way for me and I don't think that I have a great way
Bells are required in some areas and some areas not.
@singletrackmatt LMFAO "oh hey honey um....so i have this giant ass train in the backyard now...nothing shocking ok don't worry"
These girls ought to be rebuilt and restored to service instead of going to the scrapper.
dont scrap them! they could give one to me. dont know what id do with it but im sure id love to have it.
you could start your own railroad
I'm sure I could squeeze three in the back yard. I could two in my brothers yard, and I'm sure my father in law would be able to fit around 5 in his back yard. Come to think of it, I could put two in the front yard as well.
SAXT Productions do you know how havy and Long tha r
Ware was this at
Anybody know if they were scrapped?
Probibly went to leasers
o, i get it, its a funeral for the locomotives. Nice video but you should have filmed the entire train.
I don't get it y r they scrapping g these trains I mean all they need is the new paint job and upgrades or why not just keep the shells and use them for better needs
These ones eventually were called back to service via leasing company and some have found their way onto other railroads.
larry84988 oooo so they r gonna go separate ways sold scrapped
They were shipped to NREX about 4 or so years ago, and then placed into their lease fleet.
larry84988 oh ok
Some of these locomotives were probably being moved to storage but I can definitely tell you that those SD40M-2s were headed off to scrap
What is a funeral train? I'm thinking a train carrying someone's body
Sean Vance its a train going to the scrap heap
Downeaster Productions is every engine going to the scrap heap or just certain ones
What's that knocking sound?
Because of the jointed rail as the wheels pass over it.
just give them to HLCX, CERX, or CITX
@ 0:50, my hat comes off.
why dispose of good locos when they could be saved to a railway museum somewhere in the world
+Paddy Kelly Too easy. Wasteful idiocy is what it is
To company's such as gatx or ltex
dude ! get a tripod
How is this train a "funeral" train?
Dan The locomotives were heading to scrap.
That's the wrong kind of funeral train.
NOT THE EMDS D,,,,,,=
13 units. How approproate. :-(
Of course they put something you see on the GAYneva sub everyday on the point...
What heppend to Amtrak unit 199...Shes a little scratched up it looks.
This is where the funeral trains end up... th-cam.com/video/RMNUaCJtTMc/w-d-xo.html.
noooooooo!!!!!!!
What happened to Amtrak 199... She look a little scratched!!
you can buy them for cheap
give one to me!! or at least the horn!!!
i secant that
now im sad :(
100th comment :-)
its horrible to see such decent locos being smashed to pieces
That wasn't painful or anything.
This is kind of sad.
what a waist of perfectly good locomotives
It's a shame...
What a depressing Video.
