Yet again - it is proven that if something rare, bizarre, special, unique, etc. is happening on the rails, our man Trains232 will be there to get it captured on video! BRAVO.
I believe that they had one of these BNSF Dash 8's that was brand new and on display when we went to RailFair in Sacramento in 1999. I walked through the cab and was pretty impressed. But it was brand spanking new and even smelled like it. Anyone else remember that? Anyway these were also a familiar site along the shared UP and BNSF mainline between Seattle and Portland Oregon which boasts over 60 trains passing through there at speed daily.
Awesome catch. I have read that these units are headed for service in Canada and not for the scrap yard. Sure hope it's true as the Dash-8 has become one of my favorite engines of all time.
Since 2015 I have seen 3 different trains made up of engines sitting on a siding at Humphrey Arkansas waiting it's turn to get back on the main line and go either north or south. I've often wondered if these were going somewhere for repair, being moved to a new location or what. There's always a bunch of different company names on them. The train uses the whole siding.... approximately 1 mile in length.
Erie Plant has begun rebuilding in 2016. We had a number of NS & CSX rebuilt into AC evo's. The NS's had all the cabs removed and the platform inverted into station 1 for BSA re-assembly. The CSX's only removed engine cab & engines, rebuilding the other cabs on the platform. Once the NS process was established, the remaining units were sent to Ft Worth Texas to be completed. GE is hoping for more based on the successes of these first ventures. I work in Erie GE, bldg. 10 Final Assembly, station 1, BSA.
"Wow, That Was So Cool", sorry for your loss, haha! I saw a video once of 40 Steam Engines all lined up & being pulled to the Bone Yard. "This looked just like that"! But, i will enjoy the Dash 8's on the CN Tracks here, thanks! CN has gone Dash 8 Crazy, and that's cool! We now have the ex-C&NW Standard Cab's to go with the Dash 8-40CM Full Car Bodies, haha! And now the Dash 8 Wide Cab's! Life is good, it only took CN 22 dumb years to get them, haha! Great Video, Thanks!
This is just a deadhead move. Too many good locomotives to be on the way to scrap. And old diesels of this kind aren't usually scrapped in that way, anyway. They're recycled. Too many usable parts. Even then, when they are of no use to the AT&SF, they'll be sold to a series of short and shorter lines, often extending their operation for another 20 years. In normal operations, an imbalance of head-end power often accumulates in certain areas, especially where loads and grades indicate a lot of power inbound, but not much outbound. Pretty soon a deadhead train takes them back to where they are most needed. I'm not going to say it's impossible, but given the condition of those engines, scrapping is not even remotely in their futures. Of course, this was 7 years ago. Maybe some are gone NOW (2017), but that's not where they were going THEN (2010).
Magnificent! Please tell me, are there only two engines powered up - the first and the last? With all of them moving, all of them sound like they are running. LOL!
You know , I think every Line should keep at least one of each of the locos of their predecessor in their original logoto serve as a memorial to yesteryear. Is it me or does railfanniing loses its luster somewhat as it streamline thier fleets? Opinions open. Im in S.Florida and if it wasnt for an unexpected runthru of pot ash, I never wouldve seen a pumpkin in all its splender.
Wow..Once in a LIfe Time. On my car radio I heard the Doobie Brothers" "Long Train Runnin" and there were two trains running at the same time passing. One was The Illinois Central and the Southern Central Freight. Both of trains crossed when the lyrics went "........ Well the Illinois Central And the Southern Central Freight..........". It was the first time I went to Vegas, too.
I lived next to the Pennsy when I was a kid..never was scared to stand close as trains whizzed by..now that I am old, wisdom has set in and I could not get out of the way fast enough if something would happened!!
@EpicDingoProductions a wheel slip is when a wheel like a steel train wheel can't get enough traction from the tracks and the wheel spins faster than the trains speed.
On June 30 2002 fellow rial fan Marty Conair and i caught a line up of rare former Amtrak SDP40F rebuilds on the deadline at Barstow station. A week alte rthey were all sent to the scapper. PVideo tape and photogrpah everyhting you neve rknow ehn the end of an era is coming... John Amundsen
Those are probably what’s called a power move. For example it could be that more power is needed at the west coast. Also those type of trains are very hard to stop , it takes further to stop than a regular train using train car brakes. If you get hit at a railroad crossing at 70mph by one of these, they will stop probably 1 and a 1/2 miles from the crossing.
Anyone that understood how railroads work would know this is called a Power Move, not a funeral procession. Happens every day somewhere. Search for Train Power Move and see hundreds of these.
Several hundred were aggregated here in Oklahoma City several years ago. Last year saw many depart, but 30 or 40 are still here sitting in BNSF's north central yard.
last time I saw this it was just a transfer of locomotives one time I took pix of a whole fleet of ex-UPs, DRGs & a couple were ex-BNSFs all marked with NREX
@bobberfie I assume you work for BNSF...has there been any changes since Warren Buffet took over? I've also heard/read that a lot of engineers really dislike the GEVOs and these units in the video as well - what is so different about them compared to a Sd-60?
Question: are all 30 locos MU'd together and under power, or are most of them simply being towed by the lead engine(s)? 30 Dash-8's ... how much freakin power is that!? 120,000 horsepower? What does that compare to?
this reminds me of a video i saw on u u tube but instead of the dash 8 40CW's they were all BN E units..sad to see this but i guess its normal..still don't like it though but it would be nice if they were underpower for their final run thats a great way to go out in style also...great video to honor cool units
WHAT IS THE IDEA OF SUCH A MASSIVE POWER MOVE AND FUNARAL PROCESSION WHAT DOES IT MEAN THIS IS AWSOME YOU CAN'T BELIEVE IT UNLESS YOU SEE IT WITH YOUR OWN EYES.
They are moving the power from storage to be either scrapped, rebuilt, or sold off, the idea behind the funeral train is all but the lead two and the rear two are dead.
That sound when they all pass by is truly something else! Even with most of the locomotives not running.
Looking at this video made me stand up and just flex my muscles for a few minutes. So much power in one video.
Lol!
Yet again - it is proven that if something rare, bizarre, special, unique, etc. is happening on the rails, our man Trains232 will be there to get it captured on video! BRAVO.
Dash 8 40cw locomotives are still a little young to be getting rid of them. These must have major issues that are too expensive to fix
Big T Nope, They were sold to CN because California has BS emissions standards, Fuck you California and EPA
Yeah cause breathing is optional.
@@williamjackson5942 Don't be a child.

Man talk about a power move!
Great video.
Shrink them to HO scale!!!! I will take them.
lol
These were not scrapped. All of these were sold to CN.
But CN is scrapping them now
To new for scrap. I think their leasing to other railroads like CN. To wear new paint and be reborn!
Awesome catch. I have read that these units are headed for service in Canada and not for the scrap yard. Sure hope it's true as the Dash-8 has become one of my favorite engines of all time.
In like 10 years, we will see GEVO funeral processions like this
None of the locomotives here were scrapped. The whole 800 block (about half shown here) were sold to CN.
yeah, that seems right, too new to be scrapped.
Thank God because Scraping Warbonnets is a crime
Good to hear that they will live a second life!
I see alot of US based Engines attahced to CN freights go thru my town in Moncton, NB Canada
Wilfstor You are a gentleman and a scholar.
That's about 13 million pounds worth of motive power there. WOW!
WOW He could carry 20 miles of cars
They were taking them to get the windshield washer fluid filled up.
+Mike Day Going to get the muffler bearings tightened. :-D
Mike Day Same name as mine!
Mike Day y
Off for upgrading, overhauling and repainting.
These units have a new home on the CN in Canada Now
They look and sound great
these units replaced 65 SD40-2's on the CN
I didn't realize Santa Fe even HAD that many engines ...
And now it is the end for the Dash 8 variants on the CN, we're another generation of locomotives closer to railfanning completely dying.
Since 2015 I have seen 3 different trains made up of engines sitting on a siding at Humphrey Arkansas waiting it's turn to get back on the main line and go either north or south. It would appear that my 841 was in the consist oh boy!

Its so odd to see these locomotives in New Westminster BC (BNSF and the older war bonnet paint)
I hate to see that locomotive go bye bye forever
Not gone, but soldiering on in CN livery now.
imagine if they could blow all the whistles at once
horns
Whistle horn same thing!!
whistle and horms are different things
go to bed now
Haaaa I was thinking same thing. I’m sure there would be a few heartattacks and a lot of deaf people

based on a tech spec sheet:
if all were online available 120,000 hp;
total weight (391,600 lbs * 30) 11,748,000 + humans + cargo :-)

Shooshie128 they was sold to CN
Plus California emission standards. Way to many gevos being seen here.
Oldie, but forever a goodie!... WOW! Loved it... :-)
Magnificent! Please tell me, are there only two engines powered up - the first and the last? With all of them moving, all of them sound like they are running. LOL!
I feel like Sesamee Street's Count having to count every engine that flies by the camera! Also I think it's making me a little dizzy.

So sad; to think that they used to grace the transcon in that fabulous warbonnet scheme not even 20 years ago.

I lived next to the Pennsy when I was a kid..never was scared to stand close as trains whizzed by..now that I am old, wisdom has set in and I could not get out of the way fast enough if something would happened!!
Is that really all of the BNSF Dash 8's. You know, Amtrak could have made an investment in those locomotives.
@EpicDingoProductions a wheel slip is when a wheel like a steel train wheel can't get enough traction from the tracks and the wheel spins faster than the trains speed.
would be nice if the BNSF could donate at least 2 of them to a railroad museum
If i'm not mistaken, CN bought them, and they're probably headin to somewhere north, i'm thinkin Chicago.
Best ever =)
Thank you for sharing!
Imagine what all those locos could pull...that is, if the knuckles don’t snap before then
what state was this in? looks cool seeing that many!
California
CSX already has a huge fleet of these, and wasn't interested in purchasing any!
Not really a funeral procession because they were sold to CN and will be put to good use.
i think there just relocating them not scraping them.

That was awesome and sad. Great post. Liked it.
Are they going to scrap all of those engines,or was it an engine transfer? Nice video 2 thumbs and favorite
Just think...if they were ALL running and if they were ALL 3,000 HP, you'd have 90,000 HP...I think that would carry what 400 plus loaded cars..
So could these maybe end up on regional and shortline roads. Would be a sweet addition to my shortline roster! !!

Does anybody know where these Units are sitting? Are they going to be repainted or kept the way they are with the CN logo stenciled on
Awesome catch Robert! They broke down in Placentia near Fullerton where I caught them.
I like the "whooop" sound I heard at the end of the first scene when locomotives cleared the camera view
Sad to see those big boys go... Great video!
This railfan dream.
Only around 30 engines. Nice but after seeing the Union Pacific's train yard in Roseville Ca. They had that many just parked on one siding.
BNSF scraps them but NS rebuilds them. Two different railroads for sure.
Haha Totally
Thats cuz in BNSFs eyes old power is junk power and new power is obsolete
Dylan Ruppert BNSF is better off with GEVO's than Dash 8s and Dash 9s but that's just me. NS will take them for sure lol
Not C40-8W's. NS is more interested in Older EMD power as seen with them buying all of those SD40-2's, SD60/M's, and SD75M's.
+Steven Michael One of them didnt get scrapped
Great catch, thanks for posting!

Should i call OSBI?
last time I saw this it was just a transfer of locomotives
one time I took pix of a whole fleet of ex-UPs, DRGs & a couple were ex-BNSFs
all marked with NREX
Absolutes Hammer Video ,Bei soviel geballte Kraft fehlt nur noch der 10 Km lange Güterwagenteil.Es grüßt der Peter aus Germany
They were not Scrapped
@bobberfie I assume you work for BNSF...has there been any changes since Warren Buffet took over? I've also heard/read that a lot of engineers really dislike the GEVOs and these units in the video as well - what is so different about them compared to a Sd-60?
they're not getting scrapped yet you guys, they were bought by CN.
Its no funeral. They are for CN
They're all going to Larry's Truck & Electrical in New Jersey(LTEX) for either rebuild or to become spare parts.
Question: are all 30 locos MU'd together and under power, or are most of them simply being towed by the lead engine(s)? 30 Dash-8's ... how much freakin power is that!? 120,000 horsepower? What does that compare to?
my next guess was CSX...I think they still use Dash-8s
Nice catch!!!
@bnsfwarbonnet I think they were sent to CN, but they have since been returned to BNSF.
@bnsfwarbonnet They didn't. I'm guessing that CN kept a few, but most have been in service for the past year and are being returned to BNSF about now.
@AmtrakSurfliner768 I know...but i heard a few were being scrapped
AWESOME Vid, 30 units!!
this reminds me of a video i saw on u u tube but instead of the dash 8 40CW's they were all BN E units..sad to see this but i guess its normal..still don't like it though but it would be nice if they were underpower for their final run thats a great way to go out in style also...great video to honor cool units
the stories those engines could tell
Great Catch!. I need to move to the West coast. At 1:31, are those apt,or condos? I would love to have a place like that. Where is that exactly?
Look at all them leslies O_o
CSX 3099 Ikr
Atlanta Sub Productions There going to CN.
wow! POWERRR , nice catch & mix
Maybe putting them in storage but theres no way these guys were getting scrapped
Would be so kool to get a cab for the back yard.
Nah, they should bring back the old BN green/white/black color scheme!
Wow, nice catch!
Wow, I wonder how many were fully operational. Many looked as if they had been resting for years out in someone’s cow pasture
@grovestreetgman I have seen pics of the CN patched H2 and H3 units, wonder how the patched warbonnets look.?
Were any of these Dash8s rebuilt to ES locomotives?
Now as of right now are they all fone or are some still waiting to get scrapped?
@MoPacBoy They were sold to Canadian National.
چه خبر است؟؟؟؟جشن لکموتیو ترن در حال انجام است..زیبا ست ،باسپاس

They are moving the power from storage to be either scrapped, rebuilt, or sold off, the idea behind the funeral train is all but the lead two and the rear two are dead.
what are they doing with all these locomotives??
Why not rebuild em like EMD's?
sad but awesome catch
And they still buy locomotives en masse from GE...(Shakes head)
Domestically who else can they buy them from?
^^^EMD
From another comment, the most logical reason for this is just california emissions standards making these trains too expensive to keep running
doesn't Cat still build EMD's?
Fairbanks Morse?
Lol, nope, CN bought them, theres a picture of the BNSF 846 with the "BNSF" painted over in orange, and CN written in its place.
Awesome video!
That's the size of an average train good catch you are so lucky
are they all going to be scrapped?
there's a lot of BNSF locos
@Alwaystrains why cn refuse the WARBONNET because its not boring
