AFTER THE PROCEDURE: You will have a hunting idle problem (Consistently reving up and down in a cyclical pattern) because you let air into the coolant line right next to the IACV. Idle relearn will not fix this. Open the radiator cap, when the car is off and cold. Squeeze the radiator tube a bunch of times to burp any air bubbles out. (Who cares if you spill some out of the radiator) After that, the hunting idle should be fixed, but you’ll still have minor idle issues. Thats when you do the idle relearn process. For a noob like myself, I feel like it would have been nice to add this into the tutorial.. took me a day to figure out what was going on, I didnt realize coolant played that important of a roll.
Thanks so much. My daughters 2003 Honda CR-V was stalling at idle. 2 mechanics looked at it and scratched their heads. One said it wasn’t throwing any codes so there was nothing he could do. How hard it is to find a mechanic that really knows their craft anymore! The other replaced the fuel pump sweating that was the issue. The idle air control valve ended up being the problem and this video was awesome for showing me what I would need to deal with and saved me a lot of trial and error. Thanks to the video creator, you gave me what I needed to fix my car after 2 auto shops gave up!
We had the same problem with a 98 Accord V6. IACV was badly clogged up and didn’t work after attempts at cleaning. Bought after market valve and found that it idled high but had to go with it as away from home. Once back the idle returned to normal and has been working ok since then. Thanks for your excellent video that was the best!!
You not only showed me how to get this part unstuck but also showed me 2 other things I needed to get to in same area while giving me sizes of tools to use thus saving me from multiple project from not having all parts at once- thank you!!!
Heres a list of things Ive done to my 2004CRV that was burning a quart of oil a week, running a bit harshly and not idling perfectly.. it had 310,000km on it. I got it running alot better and its not burning oil anymore: -sea foam GDI intake cleaner, -oil cleaner additive before oil change -used “high milage” oil -put in the most expensive oil filter -lucas oil treatment for sealing the engine -gumout fuel line cleaner additive to gasoline -new spark plugs -new battery -cleaned IACV valve -cleaned the mass airflow sensor with mass airflow sensor cleaner. All of these repairs were relatively cheap and it was very satisfying to see how doing simple things can make a drastic change in the cars performance.
Had the same problem with my accord. Watched every videos related to high and low idling and still had the same problems. I was lucky to get your video and it made a difference. You saved me two weeks of headaches. Did exactly what you told to do. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Great video. My car failed smog check yesterday with Amazon's china knockoff Idle air control valve for my 2003 Honda accord. Luckily I kept my OEM IACV. Followed your method and restored the function of my old OEM IACV. I didn't have a five star screw driver so I used my locking plier like a wrench to unscrew the electrical portion of IACV from the mechanical portion. In fact, I de-threaded one of the original screw that held my IACV onto the throttle body as well but I am still using the same the screw by using the same locking plier technique. (Honda dealers didn't have any screw available until next week... maybe most people de-threaded those screws because they didn't use your impact driver- hammer technique.) . Again thanks, you saved me a ton of money and time since I don't have to special order new OEM IACV now.
I cleaned the IACV and it did not resolve a surging/unstable idle. After seeing your video I took apart the electric part and the rotating valve was sticky. Cleaned that and it fixed the problem. Thanks for the very helpful video.
You are a champion. My wife’s car just had this very issue, or it would idle so low it would cut out. I just followed your instructions and sure enough that spindle on the electric motor was sticking. Sure I had to go and buy the t-20 piece to unscrew those screws halfway through the job, but I was pretty happy when I put it all back together and the car runs perfectly. To anyone else about to take this on, don’t do what I did, watch the whole video first and make sure you have all the tools you need. I’m about to make a third trip and buy some coolant. 👊🏽

you saved me. I replaced a starter in my 02 CRV and thought I missed a vacuum hose. tore it all apart again and I connected everything as should. stumped, found your video, did what you did and bam! car idles showroom new! thank you!
Your video and some of the comments saved me some grief. Did a starter replacement and then got the surge. Checked all over for vacuum leaks. Pulled some codes but didnt read data Pulled off idle valve, slightly stuck from carbon but i think whats happening is when the intake and throttle body are removed eg when doing a starter replacement that the tinyest but of crud grit or whatever causes the valve which is probably already carbonuzed to stick, anything entering the throttle body just drops right in to the idle valve. It took vice grips to get one of the phillips ana JIS screws loose, the torks i cut a slot with a die grinder and a sharp screwdriver broke those. Thanks honda man..
Idle relearn. Disconnect battery and ground negative with positive terminals for 10 minutes. Reconnect battery. Turn ignition to key on engine off for 2 seconds, then start car. Let idle for 10 minutes. Idle should drop down below 1000 rpm, after a few minutes. When that is complete the idle relearn is complete and your good to go. If the idle does not drop down below 1000 rpms, then you need to reset the computer using a scan tool.
I ended up putting a new one on but I did use this video for a reference. It helped a lot. I stripped one of the screws on the original air control. But I was able to still get it out by stuffing a rubber band in the Phillips cross
Your video is very descriptive, and helpful. Have 03 crv that sat for a couple of months, then had revs surging from 1100-2000rpm by itself. Cleaned as you described, and she's a goer. Thanks for your help.
Wow I have just had the person to change the high pressure hose and still the revs very high. Car is drivable Thank you soo much, you have explained and shown everything in the short amount of time . I will ask the person to check to the IAC valve before anything else. Good work your video has saved hundreds of $. And yes having a good OB2 is very helpful in taking the guess work and trouble shooting out.
Great Video, Thank-you. My IAC valve was stuck, T-20 were rusted pretty badly, Used a fin blade hack saw to cut groove in top and unscrewed. Valve was seized up. All cleaned up, new M4-20 screws put in, now ready to test.
Thank you very much! Using your method I was able to dislodge a chunk of intake hose rubber that was lodged in my iacv flapper. Car runs great now. Saved $100s!
I'm dealing with one at my shop right now ...I've cleaned the old one that didn't work. Usually it does soooo I got a new one. Same thing different code. P0505. Sooo I'm going to try one more new IAC from Honda this time. I'll keep u posted 👍
Excellent video. I had to use vice grips on the two phillips screws, and a dremel to turn those weird Torx like screws into a line that a standard screwdriver would work on. Thanks Phillip!
I decided to pay to have my new sensor changed out. I drove it away and it immediately popped right back into high reving mode. Through the code reader on and it still gave me the 0507 code. Either something else is causing it, or the part I bought is faulty.
I just did this, fair warning, be super careful getting that small vacuum hose off. I was twisting mine and the nipple snapped. Also, the torx were impossible to get out. The head is so shallow and if there is any rust, there is no bite.
Just subscribed, your video on this was absolutely perfect... every subtle comment as you explained and demonstrated this repair was greatly appreciated. Our 2004 CR-V was purchased by our kids who have been storing it for 6 months (until the grandkids can drive) and it developed this exact problem. It has the same erratic idle and trouble code, and I have great confidence that the IAC vane is carbon-jammed as you demonstrated. Will be doing this repair once I gather replacement o-rings and the specialty tools you specified. Excellent
Ok great I'm happy you enjoyed the video, make sure you mark the sensor location before removing the 5 point torx so you can put it back right where it was
Excellent video, just tried to do this myself, mine was rusty crusty screws did not come out, wouldnt move with anything heat everything, drilled it out to no avail, recommend picking up a rebuilt or used one, I got a used one for my manual 2004 as the throttle body isn't common, had to this process on the used one I bought. Unplug your battery and turn your headlights on and leave it for 5 minutes to drain all the power out, once the computer is complete drained it will reset, attach battery back on and turn car on,that should remove the check engine light
I recommend that after cleaning and moving freely add some oil to penetrate the small bearings inside de valve, I had the same issue on mine and after 2-3 months the issue came back and the bearing oil or grease was wiped by the carb cleaner spray.
just had a look at my old idle control that was pulled out of my honda. the rod that goes into the idle control motor was completely shredded, took part of the motor with it. no wonder is was going bad.
You are very carefull to scribe a line on the stepper motor in order to re-assemble the same position. So why are the holes slotted? Can that be used to modify idle speed?

I recently did this to my crv but now the car won't start every light in the interment cluster lights up but the car won't even crank over if you have any idea what the problem may be please let me know. Thanks
I have 2007 Civic EX. Recently experienced noise, unstable idle, and shaking when cold starts. Cleaned throttle body, EGR and MAP sensor. Replaced IAC valve. However, problem has not been fixed. Do you think if I should replace intake manifold gasket? Thanks a lot!
What does it mean if I shifted into drive/reverse and it goes from 800-1600 RPM and kinda shakes back and forth? Also, it’s in freezing temperatures in Minneapolis.
Imma be doing this tomorrow any advice for me. I don't have the special tools you used but I do believe I have that 5point drill bit you mentioned. I am going to be cleaning the throttle body butterfly and then I saw your video and decided to clean that as well since imma be so close to it. However, I didn't get a code, but my car is having this problem. It idles high when I'm not moving and it shakes bad.
Impeccable ! La crv 2 de madame avait le même problème . Après avoir visionné ta vidéo j'ai fait le boulot et tout est revenu à la normale. Good job and thks ....
i am currently having this issue. 2003 honda crv 2.4 UK manufactored model. things ive tried, 1)purchased the $300 oem iac , 2) iac relearn procedure 2sec on, then 3k rev for 10 without any load, 3) removed the ecu/pcm fuse for 5 min then replace and tried the relearn again, 4) check for vacuum leaks, 5)replaced the pcv incase this was the issue. i initially removed the old iac cleaned it and installed with no luck, this is why i bought a oem replacement. One thing i’ve noticed, when i erase the p0505 code with obd scanner, the crv idles perfect until driven and the check engine light comes back on. hopefully you may have some insight. thank you in advanced
@@abygailbird4746 unfortunately i didnt find a resolution. After driving for weeks the check engine light came off, but engine still have slight idle issues. I have posted my question to many youtube sites but no one was able to help with this.
@@ronm4850 Hey I might have found my problem, I got the p0505 code and when I replaced the iacv, I figured since I took the throttle body off I’d clean it, well that’s the thing, I cleaned it off too good apparently. There’s a very thin coating of what looks like sealant of some sort around the inside and around the butterfly. It helps close off the throttle better. I pulled one from a junkyard and carefully cleaned it, to not remove that sealant. I installed it yesterday and my car is idling at 700! It’s never been that low, it was always at 1000 on idle. I reset the code and now waiting for sensors to set for smog. Will update if needed. Good luck!
Thanks for the video. I have the exact same problem with my 2003 Honda CRV but without the error code (P0507). When there is no error code does this mean the Idle air control valve is damaged and must be replaced or could it be the same problem as shown in the video?
Do you think this could affect gas mileage? I don’t have any code, however sometimes idling my car idles close to the 1000 RPM, sometimes is lower (around 780-800 RPM).
Appreciate the details on this! Been chasing IACV code with changing out parts....and now see i need to remove lower piece to clean carbon. 🤦♂️ This was my only issue all along. Also, what was the scanner/test software you were using? Sweet to be able to test via the software. Thanks again!
This surging idle problem it suddenly happen to my 2006 element after I replace my alternator. Could the problem appear after replacing the alternator and disconnecting the battery.?
Very much appreciate the video! Finding that 5 point star T20 is near unobtanium. Only choice is Amazon or Ebay. I even tried Pepboys but I had no idea they no longer sell parts.
Mine is doing that but not that bad. But it does it also when in drive. It’s like it want to go but I keep my foot on the brake. I’d this the same problem?
I recently replaced my throttle body on my 2007 civic lx with brand new one but no matter the learning procedure I tried manually would not take away code p0507, any help please?
You can spray cleaner in there but you can't rotate it and get it completely clean. Try grabbing the phillips head on the side with some vice grips and see if you can crack that screw loose

Could you just remove the air intake tube and spray some intake cleaner into the butterfly while it's running and clean out the idle air control valve also without taking the intake off and apart?

Computers wires were checked and I was told they are fine. Throttle body cleaned. FI ECU fuse is not blown. Oh and main air intake hose was replaced (bottom was cracked apart). Mechanic has no idea what could be STILL causing the problem or how to fix. PLEASE any help is appreciated. Thank you .

I use a 2004 crv, mostly on highway, it will stop accelerating even with my leg on the gas pedal and the idle keep on going down and the car finally stop, but the engine is still running, after a while the car will move again. I recently did this to my crv but now the car won't start every light in the interment cluster lights up but the car won't even crank over if you have any idea what the problem may be please let me know. Thanks
Try resetting the electronic control module
I have 2007 Civic EX. Recently experienced noise, unstable idle, and shaking when cold starts. Cleaned throttle body, EGR and MAP sensor. Replaced IAC valve. However, problem has not been fixed. Do you think if I should replace intake manifold gasket? Thanks a lot!
I would take it into a good shop to get it diagnosed so you're not just throwing parts at it or spending extra money you don't have to
Hey Phil! Thank you! just replaced the starter motor on my cr-v, and putting the intakes back I had that very experience. Now I know what to do!
What does it mean if I shifted into drive/reverse and it goes from 800-1600 RPM and kinda shakes back and forth? Also, it’s in freezing temperatures in Minneapolis.
any advice for this same code for a 2009 Honda CRV. there's no IAC on the throttle body.
Holy Smokes Capn Gung-Ho!! Props on a great video, love it, got the finesse for sure! Even left the battery connected, love the gusto!
You sir are a master of your trade.
Impeccable !
La crv 2 de madame avait le même problème .
Après avoir visionné ta vidéo j'ai fait le boulot et tout est revenu à la normale.
Good job and thks ....

Thank you so much. This is very helpful 🙂, what is the type or name and model scan tool you used ?

Thanks a lot! Got the same issue on 1999 Honda HR-V, but pretty much all Hondas are the same :)
Thanks so much, followed your advice and perfectly solved the issue!
This is an older model of my car, do you happen to know if the IACV is removable from the throttle body on a 2010 CRV?
i am currently having this issue. One thing i’ve noticed, when i erase the p0505 code with obd scanner, the crv idles perfect until driven and the check engine light comes back on. hopefully you may have some insight. thank you in advanced
did you fix your problem? im having the same issue
@@abygailbird4746 unfortunately i didnt find a resolution. After driving for weeks the check engine light came off, but engine still have slight idle issues. I have posted my question to many youtube sites but no one was able to help with this.
Any updates on your crv? Same issue with mine :(
@@cutthroat0075591 still the same issue, been going on for a long time, now i have to get inspected and im just stomped.
It could be the same problem without a code. Wouldn't hurt to clean it
Do you think this could affect gas mileage? I don’t have any code, however sometimes idling my car idles close to the 1000 RPM, sometimes is lower (around 780-800 RPM).
Hi sir, does crv R20A engine have IACV VALVE or not? Where it located ? I had issue when cold start RPM not consistent, but when warm is ok....
My 2010 crv has a high STFT at idle could this be the problem? i have checked for leaks on hoses could not find any
05 Honda Accord. Opposite issue…too low of idle. Installed new IAC. same problem 😮
How, at 4:00 in, did you take off those coolant hoses without mentioning coolant? And where did your coolant go? How did you stop it?
I see, you did it after
Ty sir ,question ,this idle valve control the fans also ?? It will tell them when to go on
When idle ? Thanks I was doing this and my car overheated 🥺
The idle air control valve is not related to the fans
@@FixItPhillip thank you sir

Do they require the original idle control valve or can I just buy one from autozone
The aftermarket ones are hit and miss. I would go original
@@FixItPhillip thx for the advice
Mine is doing that but not that bad. But it does it also when in drive. It’s like it want to go but I keep my foot on the brake. I’d this the same problem?
I recently replaced my throttle body on my 2007 civic lx with brand new one but no matter the learning procedure I tried manually would not take away code p0507, any help please?
Where did you get your T-20 five spokes? Thank you

Very informative video. Thank you
Nice clear explanation. However, you had the throttle body out. Why not clean it too?
When you say you put a little silicone on the gasket, what kind do you use? Thanks
Best video on this I've seen. 🤘
Thank you for your time and knowledge. I think im having this same probably but only randomly sometimes
I'm stuck removing the Philips screws , mine are super hard and getting stripped 🥴 do u know of iCan clean it with out removing the sensor?
You can spray cleaner in there but you can't rotate it and get it completely clean. Try grabbing the phillips head on the side with some vice grips and see if you can crack that screw loose
@@FixItPhillip @FixItPhillip iEnded up putting everything back together N seafoamed the throttle body, my idle is gone now, BUT my car still stalls and shuts off at a stop sometimes, I've replaced all coils and spark plugs, any tips?no codes ethier
Not without looking at it. Good luck with it brotha

Hi sir my car is a Honda City EXI(1997) it jerks at low speed, and the rpm goes to 1500/1300,and it goes down when air con is switch on,any advice please.
Great video! Very detailed.
What scanner did you use?

This video very helpful my car is accord 2004 high rpm problem what's a problem please tell me
When you put it in drive does it start to accelerate without pressing the gas pedal?
Thanks for this video... question my car started doing the same with the idle , after I was cleaning the manifold intake any advice? For my next steps
Did you check to see if the idle Ir control valve was stuck
Hi, is it possible to adjust throttle without fancy scanner?
Yes I was just testing it to make sure it was working. You can try to clean it and see if it improves
For those iac screws, I use a butane torch and apply a little heat to the throttle body side of the screw holes
Hello what year is your Honda CR-V , ? I have 2005 Honda CR-V was wondering does that model have IACV too?
Could you just remove the air intake tube and spray some intake cleaner into the butterfly while it's running and clean out the idle air control valve also without taking the intake off and apart?
In some cases yes. But more often its stuck/corroded to the point of having to take it apart. Doesn't hurt to try
Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to help. My daughter has a 2001 Honda CRV that's throwing a P0505 code. Here is her description of the problem .. CRV wants to surge. CRV jerks forward when foot is not on gas. Car jerks alot more more frequently when going down a slope....Iacv was replaced.. No vacuum leaks found. Thank you .
Mine had similar issue but not exactly. I use a 2004 crv, mostly on highway, it will stop accelerating even with my leg on the gas pedal and the idle keep on going down and the car finally stop, but the engine is still running, after a while the car will move again. It happens from time to time. Can this fix solve same issue? Your response is highly useful. Thanks
No that sounds like a different issue, possible clogged catalytic convertor? No check engine light on or overheating?
Your video made the job so much easier thanks very much!
At 7:00 are you using Phillips or JIS screwdriver?
I believe it was a Phillips if I remember correctly
If you turn the slotted motor does it raise or lower the idle?
Would anyone know if the procedure can be done without cleaning the codes. Thanks
What engine code reader are you using? I have an older one, and it's not as user friendly as the one you were using.

Nice video sir, and good scanner
What brand of scanner sir?
Where do you find the bit to remove the IAC switch from the valve body?
saw this farther down:

Harbor Freight sells a cheap set of bits
