Such a new, mystic and unexpected kind of metal back in these times where metal as a complete genre was in it's decline in Germany. This was years before Nightwish and symphonic Metal even became a thing. I still love this song...
Within Temptation first full album Enter was also around this time, in 1997. Both these bands were a welcome change to the metal I was listening to at that time. Unfortunately, Within Temptation chose the path of becoming more mainstream.

"Der Tanz der Schatten" is a gothic anthem. it's played up and down in every club. the song is still one of my favorite gothic songs. actually there is nothing wrong with it, but tastes are known to be different...
Gothic Metal is not symphonic metal where the female vocals are strong. It is part of the sound of gothic metal. The female vocals are very light and fragile. GOTHIC mean beauty in darkness. It is a cold beauty such as the fullmoon while standing in the woods at night. It is beauty mixed with eerie moods.
I quite like the original line up. I played Velvet Darkness from Theatre of Tragedy a lot; next to My Dying Bride. At some point I stopped listening because they had an averse affect on my mood. So, I switched to the feel good music of Type 'O Negative (not even joking here!). You also might want to check out The Sisters of Mercy with the song More from 1990. Completely different, no female lead singer but melancholic all the same.
For us that heard the original female singer first its like the Tarja / Floor discussion in Nightwish fan base. We tend to like what we first were used to 😋❤️🇧🇻
Its more like Tarja and Anette, dont like the second Singer and i only like the first and second Album of Theatre of Tragedy. And i like the first Album of Leaves Eye's with Liv Kristine.
This is Gothic metal with some elements of Doom metal... Definitely not a Symphonic metal band such as Nightwish (they used to have the goth metal elements though) or Epica. And Goth/Doom Metal is definitely less likable to many people compared to Symphonic metal... it's darker, less "catchy" and not so energetic.
Maybe try the same songs with the new singer. You only heard songs from the lastest album so far from her. For me both sound good for all songs, while in Nightwish I didn't like the second singer and for the other two singers I prefer them for different songs.

I agree with the video makers. It's a fine song but it doesn't make me feel much. Cassandra, on the other hand, is a masterpiece.

When I show you similar bands such as The Sins of Thy Beloved, Erben der Schöpfung, or Tristania, you will hear the same style of vocals.
