You mean us boomer generation Americans who do NOT suscribe to the ideals of the KKK, Nazis and other disgusting organizations, like the new administration taking over on Jan 20th 2025.
I had a 45 record that ended this song with Ted Kennedi’s eulogy for his brother Robert. “My brother need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life, to be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it. Those of us who loved him and who take him to his rest today, pray that what he was to us and what he wished for others will some day come to pass for all the world. As he said many times, in many parts of this nation, to those he touched and who sought to touch him: "Some men see things as they are and say why. I dream things that never were and say why not."
The record waas Tom Clay's "What the World Needs Now is Love" served as the basis for a distinctive 1971 remix. Disc jockey Tom Clay was working at radio station KGBS in Los Angeles, California, when he created the single "What the World Needs Now is Love/Abraham, Martin and John" (combining with the top 5 hit, in 1968, by Dion), a social commentary that became a surprise hit record that summer.[14]
This came out shortly after Bobby Kennedy ( a Presidential Candidate), who was shot and killed in L.A. right after winning the California Primary and giving his victory speech. Bobby Kennedy was the hope of young Americans who wanted peace and change to come to our troubled country. It was less than 3 months after M.L.King was gunned down.A very sad time for millions of Americans. Dion captured thst feeling in this song. It was played on the radio a lot back then.
In regards to Bobby Kennedy and MLK, I'd like to comment how in a speech the day before his assassination, MLK seemingly predicted his soon-to-come death when he said he has seen the mountaintop but he may not get there with the rest of the struggling people. So in the last verse when Dion sings how he thinks he saw Bobby walking up over the hill with Abraham , Martin, and John, it hits hard.
Thank you for this heartfelt reaction. I was a child during that terrible decade of the violent loss of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert (Bobby) Kennedy. It had a big impact on me, as did this song when it came out. This was a wonderful reaction. Thank you so much.
Bobby, John Kennedy's brother, was also killed. That was the meaning of the closing line "I thought I saw him walking up iver the hill, with Abraham and Martin and John".
I don't know if you guys are anything like me but if you are, then you know that there are certain songs that you hear or have heard in your life that upon listening make you cry. And you don't know why... you listen to the song and you find tears flowing down your face. This is one of those songs. I heard this a long time ago and I cried the first time I heard it and every time since, I still cry. Thank you for doing this one. You seem to have a knack for picking songs that really are meaningful to me. 💕
Dominika, Bobby or Robert Kennedy U.S Senator was one of the brothers of Pres John Kennedy. Bobby was also killed running for President in June 1968. If that helps.
This song was popular in my teens. I was so moved that a rock star took time away from making hit love songs to honor these noble men. Thank you so much for sharing the song, and your sweet thoughts at this moment in our history. Means so much. 💜🌅😌
I was in grammar school when JFK was killed, the teacher was weeping when she told us. I saw the news and learned about MLK assassination Bobby was JFKs brother. The 60s were violent and sad!
@MerchantOfAlba: Happy New Year to you both. You two are such an adorable couple. I so enjoy watching your reaction videos. Your genuine, unbiased reactions and thought provoking reviews touch the heart and the mind. Whatever your native languages are, your English is so good. Thank you for your channel! Blessings.
Dion’s song appears to highlight not only the tragedy of the deaths of these political figures but also the end of the age of innocence permeating the fifties and early sixties. In hindsight we look back on that time that seemed to herald the age of gun proliferation, fear mongering and oligarchy that we’re currently living through.
JFK's funeral was on TV on my 8th birthday and I will never forget my parents crying on what would have normally been a happy birthday. My dad had taken us to see JFK in a motorcade earlier that year and he was riding in a convertible much like when he was shot.
I was in 5 th grade when John Kennedy was killed. I remember these assassinations like it was yesterday .😢 As others said, Bobby was Johns little brother, who was running for president and also assassinated.
I wasn't around when Lincoln was assassinated, but I remember vividly when JFK, MLK and Bobbie Kennedy were killed. Those events are part of the fabric of my life.
Most emotive song in rock of all time. Still hits me as it did when i first heard it. Not long after 'the good die young' as my brother had at age 5 from leukemia.
This song is sad 😢 You can't listen to it without shedding a tear. About the American tragedies that happened to JFK, his brother Bobby & Martin Luther King & Abraham Lincoln assassinations.
I remember clearly the day JFK was assassinated, I was in the 6th grade and all of the teachers were crying. We were sent home where we stayed glued to our TV watching his funeral. So so sad . I also remember when MKK was assassinated 😪and then RFK just a few months later. More tears , such heartbreak for what could have been had those great men not been cut down. God bless Abe Lincoln, MLK JFK , and Robert Kennedy . All of the assassins were caught
It's a shame that Robert Kennedy didn't show up in your research of the song. I was in high school, and my family had recently emigrated to the US from the UK. I had such high hopes that he would be the next president. I was keenly aware of all of the turmoil surrounding the '68 election and the protest movement. His assassination had a profound effect on me.
I was only 9 months old when JFK was shot, but i do remember when MLK and Bobby Kennedy were shot. My moms story about Nov 22, 1963 is that she was folding laundry as i played in my playpen when the special news bulletin came over the tv. Well she was so stunned by the news, she loved JFK, that she raced to our next door neighbors house to see if she had heard and the two of them sat glued to the tv watching the reports. She said it was about 3 hours later when she remembered she had left me in my playpen so she panicked and ran back to our house only to find me still cooing away and smiling holding my stuffed st bernard. Ive always felt a very deep connection to President Kennedy even though i was far to young to remember him when he was alive, but being a great big fan of NASA and what they accomplished while answering JFKs call to put a man on the moon is nothing short of greatness.
y'all been outside & got TANS! u been busy. omygod, u guys, this is one of my favourite songs! i reminds me of all the body bags we used to see on tv of the vietnam vets coming home, i think the song is about that too. searching thru a bar, saying 'where's jon??' but he's nowhere to be seen. this was the experience of many teenagers in the 60s, the us gov was sending children off to war. 'some day soon, it's gonna be a long one . . . '
Listen to the Tom Clay, version, that combines this song with Jackie DeShannon's, "What the World Needs Now", and I guarantee you, that both of you will get tears in your eyes!
Presumably this is the original version? I’ve only ever heard Marvin Gaye’s cover, which I prefer, but that’s probably from hearing only that one over the decades.
I never knew Marvin covered this song, ill have to check it out. I wore this 45 out twice as a little boy. I was only 9 months old when JFK was shot, but i do remember when MLK and Bobby Kennedy were shot.
All four of the men mentioned in the video fought for civil rights/equal rights and were assassinated for it. What makes it even sadder is that the United States is now backsliding on these issues under the slogan of "Make America Great Again" when nothing could be further from the truth. The song has always made me sad, but today it makes me mourn.
This song will bring most Americans to tears very quickly 😢 Including myself !
You mean us boomer generation Americans who do NOT suscribe to the ideals of the KKK, Nazis and other disgusting organizations, like the new administration taking over on Jan 20th 2025.
Yup -- crying right now
Hi Craig ,
I have listened to this song 🎵 many times and cry ever every time as soon as the music starts.😢😢😢🙏🙏🙏❤
@@robertlerman7892 , Agree 💯
I've never been able to listen to this song without getting a lump in my throat, if not outright tears.

He was all that so sad how his son turned out
@ yes you are correct. My dad was a bartender and would bring home the 45s from the jukebox when they were switched out. My mistake.
@@djt8518 Or how Ted turned out.

@@johno1765 That's an interpretation I had never thought of. I always assumed that line was referencing Capital Hill.
@@Jeff8357, I like that interpretation too.
It's the line about Bobby that chokes me up. What a difference he would have made. :(
I think he would have been a great president and I'm Canadian.
@@ReeseTimm John and Bobby were ready to turn the war machine upside down. “They” killed them both.

Gotta love how Dion can go from Run Around Sue & The Wanderer, to a deep song like this. Great reaction!
And he is still great today!!
😢🥹 through the years, melancholy. Thank you for your touching reaction. ❤️

Crazy good harp solos throughout this song, especially at the end

One of those songs that is infectious.....when I hear it, it sticks in my mind for a day.
A powerful reaction. This was 7th grade for me. Really a tumultuous time for the U.S.
I met Bobby Kennedy in Indianapolis hours just hours before Martin Luther King was assassinated...what a gut twisting day that was.
Dion is the GOAT!
