I used the same exact stainless steel bolt from Lowe’s for the clutch and gave it full throttle for the first time and the flywheel flew off and the bolt stripped the crankshaft. Make sure you get a grade 5 or higher bolt because anything lower has a better chance at snapping.
i dont know if someone mentioned it already, but I saw that the belt on the torque converter was facing the wrong way. Awesome video though, I want to upgrade my old tecumseh with a new predator too.
6 years later and your video is still one of the best I have found by far. And has been a reference for most of my yerf dog 3203 engine setup process. Thanks for the great content!
The hemi is actually the california epa version of the Predator engine which runs a little leaner than the regular one. It's not any better, that's a myth, in fact that engine has more exhaust regulations in place then the regular one like the one I have, so mine, the non hemi actually runs a little stronger and runs with more aggression because it is not set to be so "air friendly". Many people have realized it and began making sure they were getting the "non hemi" so they weren't getting stuck with the more restricted carburetor. The only way the hemi would truly be better is if the carb from a non hemi was put on the hemi, but as they stand now they are both about equal in some way's the non hemi is a little better because it is less restricted.
thank you for posting this. We brought two Yerf Dogs this last weekend and they were not working, then we saw the Predator motors on sale for 99.00 so we grabbed them and then we saw your You Tube video, wish us luck, husband said it is easier and cheaper to install a new motor.
My guy! This was one of the most helpful vids ive found on this project. A bunch of predator install vids but this answered my questions. Great work and BIG THANK YOU.
Yep that was my bad but I eventually got it flipped over. Thanks for being mean to someone trying to help others out online. Seems like a great personality trait you have there. Good luck.
My yarf dog has a dang scooter engine in it and it’s direct chain driven. Chain comes off the drive shaft of the motor and to a sprocket on the rear drive shaft. I’d like to get a ghost engine for it. But I’m not sure how to rig it up. Put a clutch directly on the drive shaft and run a chain from it to the sprocket on the axel? I’m kind of at a stand still with mine right now.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you but that is exactly what I would do. I would probably use a belt clutch instead of a chain one but in the end it would work either way.
Ironically that video is coming soon even after 6 years. I moved right after I made this video and it has been sitting in our garage for most of the last 6 years.
Absolutely. One of them came off fairly easily but the other one took me like 2 days. I ended up soaking it in PB Penetrant and having to beat the heck out of it to get it off.
I may have skipped past it in the video or something but anyone else notice the belt is going in the wrong direction? I believe that is an asymmetric belt meaning its flat on one side to go up against engine plate and the other side is curved to fit torque converter curve.
I wouldn't say you missed it. It is wrong and it was pointed out way below in the comments but I don't expect you to read through them all. Good catch though.
Just got the predator and the 2 inch bolt barley threaded went with the 2 half inch bolt seemed to hold better thank you for showing the receipt helped a lot now any ideas on hooking up car alternators to the techumseh to make it a generator
Clint Holland yea.. I ordered one from there but it was the wrong one.. I just scrolled down before you posted the link and bought another one.. bmi has been very good so far..thanks for the video.. I put the same engine on the same kart just the other day..thanks for the reply
I have the exact same engine and yerf dog and I'm having problems with it. When I brake the chain keeps on falling of. The cart won't stay in the same place when I start it, when I start it ,the cart moves forward
If the cart won't stay in place when you start it, it really can only be one of two issues. Either it is idled up too high or the torque converter is broken/worn out. Check the idle on it first and that is fine, you probably need to replace the torque converter. That could also be causing the chain to fall off. Also check the alignment of the chain and the alignment of the torque converter. If they aren't lined up correctly it could cause these issues as well.
Urdaily Gamer Maybe. What kind of brake are you referring to? Replacing the drum or the shoe on the existing one or are you referring to replacing the drum brakes with a disc brake?

I was wondering if this engine would work as a replacement. Worried about the shorter shaft, but I am going to try it. Great video. Thanks for posting it.
jackie mccullin I can't speak for it long term, but mine has been working without any problems for months now. But like you, I was also very concerned about how little of the torque converter is actually on the shaft.

Thanks for sharing! Very helpful. I am not super savy with this stuff. Any tips on how to remove the clutch from the old engine? Unless im doing something wrong mine seems to be siezed on the shaft.
Absolutely. Start with some penetrant and let it soak like PB Penetrant or something similar. Then, either beat the heck out of it, use a heat source or you can actually buy a pretty cheap clutch puller on Amazon.
@@ClintHolland pb blaster and beating the heck out of it worked! I ended up putting a new one on anyhow, but still needed the old one off to get the spacer I needed. Thanks for replying and thanks for the awesome content! Your video was spot on and made my engine swap way easier.

+Jason Wilke I do still recommend that engine. It is absolutely the best value for this cart. Think I will pass on the old engine. Have too many of those already.

+Michael Gedies Probably the main thing I would be worried about is how little of the shaft will actually match up with the torque converter. I was worried about it with this engine and it certainly doesn't have the torque that yours will.
+Brad Martin I am using the Series 30 torque converter and this is my belt. www.bmikarts.com/30-Series-Torque-Converter-Drive-Replacment-Belt-Q43203W_p_3237.html
@@pistacio103179 I don't know the specs but here is a link to all the parts on the kart. You can probably buy what you need once you find it on this diagram. www.bmikarts.com/PDF/3203A_T.pdf
I ended up making a bunch (work in a machine shop). Turns out I needed a little over 3/4" wide to keep the driver in line with the driven. Made it 1.25" OD and 3/4" bore. BMI shows they are only 9/16" wide, so if purchased, you might need additional shims.
I went and bought a predator motor for this and ended up taking it back because the shaft was so short. Have you had any issues since doing this swap with how little of the converter sits on the shaft?
Where do I get a clutch spacer like the one you put on to line the clutch up with the torque converter? I am having the EXACT SAME issue with a yerf dog I just got off CL. Its the two seat blue model. I took off the stock motor and put the Predator 212 on it, but I am frustrated that I cant get the clutch lined up with the TC. So where do I get that spacer? Thanks!
Thats the one! If I just slide my series 30 clutch on the drive shaft of the P-212, It will not line up with the TC and I have the exact same jackshaft/engine mount plate you do. I need a spacer just like that so the clutch and the TC line up.
Can you describe where you chose to mount the return spring for the throttle on the engine? BTW, this is an excellent video and perfectly timed for me. Both our karts tecumseh engines died last summer.
Great video sir, just picked up a 3203 and used your video to replace the engine with the predator. The seat belts were cut on mine, any idea for inexpensive replacements? I can't find a video on how to attach them to the frame. Any help appreciated.
hey chris your video was pretty legit good job. i bought this kart used and it had that predator engine swap done already, however the belt took a crap and im not sure what replacement to use or where to get it. ive eaten up several pep boys lawnmower belts lol. anyway to find out? i noticed your comment on what belt you have but how do i find out wbat torque converter is on there? im assuming stock if that worked with the swap. tia man
+JordanCRF450 There are a ton of upgrades available for it. What are you looking to do with the kart? You can customize it for top end speed or better torque.
Can this be done on any yerf dog? I have a 2 seater also but yours is way beefier than mine. Don't know the model number on mine, but that would be sweet if I could do this also.
Great video Clint Holland! My engine keeps flooding or leaning out (not sure which) when hitting bumps. It seems that because the engine is mounted to the swingarm it gets shaken more than it can handle off-road. What would you think about moving the engine off the swingarm and mounting it (with a little cutting and welding of course) to the body instead of the swingarm. It would require moving the driven clutch and small sprocket assembly to be in line with the pivot point of the swingarm and making the chain longer. Could it work?
I don't think it being on the swingarm is the problem. What makes you think its flooding or leaning out when you hit bumps? Mine doesnt have any problems, even when catching air. I assume you are talking about the Predator engine and not the stock one, correct?
I am actually still using the Tecumseh engine, but I have a brand new Predator sitting in the box. Every time I hit a bump, (I haven't had wheels off the ground yet) it cuts out. Wait a second or two and it stumbles back to life.
I would do some more troubleshooting. Let's back up and think about this from a high level and troubleshoot from there. An engine generally needs three things to run. Fuel, air and spark. It also needs the spark to be timed and compression and such but lets focus on fuel, air and spark. I would start by looking at any thing that might interrupt spark. Maybe a bad kill switch that is floating when you hit a bump or some engines have a switch that cuts the engine when it doesnt detect oil. Or just a loose wire. Try those first. As far as air goes, try going over a bump with the air filter removed. Unlikely but not impossible that something is flapping and cutting off air. Lastly, if you confirm it's neither of those, lets evaluate fuel. Does it do this on a full tank or only when the fuel if low? Could there be a spring issue with the butterfly valve or could there be a problem with the float cutting out. Check those things and let me know. We will figure it out.
I've seen this issue a number of time's. Disconnect the low oil sensor and you will not have that issue any longer. When the engine is no longer stationary the low oil sensor get's a false reading telling it your engine is low on oil when it real isnt its just the angle the engine is at which is causing it to cut off on you. Disconnect it or remove it and you will be fine. Just be sure to keep an eye on your oil level regularly. That is how that exact issue has been solved a number of time's.
Clint Holland and Fearless Front, Thank you both for your suggestions. I went to work on it and checked all wiring, changed the oil and it seems to have taken care of the cutting out. It still seems there may be something making it interrupt a bit. Could the governor be engaged when a weak spring gets bounced around? Also, it seems that my torque converter or belt might need replacing. I'll make a video to get some opinions on replacement. Hopefully answers will help other people know what to do too.
Great Video all went well!!! Thought I'd add something different that I did.. Being concerned about how the Clutch only sits on the motors Shaft a 1/4 of an inch. I threw a cut off wheel on my grinder and cut a 1- 3/8 inch long piece of the Shaft off my Blown up Tecumseh motor.. I then Drilled the threads out with a 5/16 drill bit so the bolt can slide through.. Once completed only taking about 10 minutes I slid the home made extension shat in, and it fit flush on the outside... to finish I used a 2 1/2 inch rather than 2 inch 5/16 fine thread bolt to grab more threads... I think It will add more strength not sure, but it's piece of mind for me anyway... Thanks for making this video
Hello Clint, Can you tell me name of the parts you used to mount the engine and where you get them from? i got the exact same yerf dog but is missing the mount for pulley and the big clutch. With the predator engine is this thing strong enough to pull a little trailer with a lawnmower on it? With me of course driving?
yes lol
I think so. Depends on how big the lawnmower is but I suspect as long as the tires could get traction, it would pull it.
theres a screw that has a spring around it by the throttle assembly and if you take it of you can get fjll throttle out of the engine
and if you take the governor off to it goes fastee

Where can I find that bushing???
The one that I put on before the torque converter?
@@ClintHolland yes, I need this info also. Dimensions would be great, I.D. , O.D. , and length.
Think the 13HP predator motor will work as easy as this one?
I am not familiar with the 13HP so I can't really say.
lol he said penetrate
I went and bought a predator motor for this and ended up taking it back because the shaft was so short. Have you had any issues since doing this swap with how little of the converter sits on the shaft?
Not at all. I was a little scared of that at first but this thing gets used pretty extensively every summer and is still going strong 7 years later.
Did the stock torque converter fit that came with the Tecumseh?
It sure did.
Thanks!
Mine already had that spacer so I didn't have to purchase one. You may need to buy the entire clutch/torque converter to get one. Try www.bmikarts.com
I cant just get a 3/4" Inner diameter spacer with the right width from Lowes or home Depot?
Are you referring to the spacer at 15:24?
Thats the one! If I just slide my series 30 clutch on the drive shaft of the P-212, It will not line up with the TC and I have the exact same jackshaft/engine mount plate you do. I need a spacer just like that so the clutch and the TC line up.
I thought you were talking about the keyed spacer on the clutch. You are correct. You can probably pick up a bushing to match at Lowes or Home Depot.
what is the name of the kill switch connector?
+King Jr Not sure I understand what you are asking.
Can you describe where you chose to mount the return spring for the throttle on the engine? BTW, this is an excellent video and perfectly timed for me. Both our karts tecumseh engines died last summer.
Aaron H I ran it around to the outside of the muffler and connected it to one of the slots that already existed in the muffler.
Great video sir, just picked up a 3203 and used your video to replace the engine with the predator. The seat belts were cut on mine, any idea for inexpensive replacements? I can't find a video on how to attach them to the frame. Any help appreciated.
I believe www.bmikarts.com has some replacement ones. Try them or sometimes Ebay.
Will this work on a 3002 yerf dog?
It looks like it would based on what I can see from pictures.
hey chris your video was pretty legit good job. i bought this kart used and it had that predator engine swap done already, however the belt took a crap and im not sure what replacement to use or where to get it. ive eaten up several pep boys lawnmower belts lol. anyway to find out? i noticed your comment on what belt you have but how do i find out wbat torque converter is on there? im assuming stock if that worked with the swap. tia man
If it's stock, its a 30 series torque converter. See this link. www.bmikarts.com/30-Series-Torque-Converter-Drive-Replacment-Belt-Q43203W_p_3237.html
Alright is there any upgrades on the yerf dog to make it better that you recommend
+JordanCRF450 There are a ton of upgrades available for it. What are you looking to do with the kart? You can customize it for top end speed or better torque.
Nice video. Do you think it will be easy to install the bigger engine on it as well?
13 HP (420cc) OHV Horizontal Shaft Gas Engine
Thanks,
Dave
***** I considered that as well. It almost certainly can't be easier as this was literally a piece of cake but anything can be done.
Do you have any information on the bushing when we bought the drive shaft they did not give us a bushing.
You talking about the bushing at 15:23 used to space out the torque converter?
Would that engine work with my hammerhead twister150 go kart?
Possibly but from what I can see online it is going to take some pretty serious modifications to pull it off.
Oh guess I gotta keep looking online and try to figure out what mods to do. Thanks
how many mph does it go now ?
beto Fountains 32Mph on the road. Thats with me in it and I weigh about 170.
I got my predator for 70$
Diana Bordelon Great deal. Around $90 is the cheapest I have seen one. But they are great engines.
Can this be done on any yerf dog? I have a 2 seater also but yours is way beefier than mine. Don't know the model number on mine, but that would be sweet if I could do this also.
I honestly don't know. With enough ingenuity you can pretty much put any engine on any cart if you have the patience, time and know how.
hi Client, u have heard or had any problems with the bolt on the shaft??
I haven't. And mine has been on there for almost a year now with no problems.
Where did you get that torque converter motor mount plate thing? I’m looking for the exact same part.
It came with the kart so I am not sure.
@@ClintHolland I actually found it on OMB
Hi Clint
Do you have a part number for the belt you use on this go kart?
I bought 3 different ones and they are all wrong
According to the manual, it is Q43203W. Hope that helps.
went to work on it and checked all wiring, changed the oil and it seems
to have taken care of the cutting out. It still seems there may be
something making it interrupt a bit. Could the governor be engaged when
a weak spring gets bounced around? Also, it seems that my torque
converter or belt might need replacing. I'll make a video to get
some opinions on replacement. Hopefully answers will help other people
know what to do too.
Did u use a lock washer with the key on the outside clutch ?
I did not. Probably should have but it hasn't come out yet, 7 years later still going strong.
how long does it take to put the motor on
If you must mean mounting it, maybe 15 minutes. If you mean this whole procedure, probably an hour or so.
Send me the website you saw this in
erick morales What do you mean Erick? Website I saw what in?
What size shaft spacer is that ??
I don't remember to be honest but I think it was a 3/4".
32mph? I weigh 200 and hit 40
Could you give any info on where you bought the clutch and what brand?
This is the orignal clutch or torque converter but I got most of my parts from www.bmikarts.com
I completely understand the concern. Mine has held up just fine but that is not to say I don't worry about it snapping every time I run it.
How much did you pay for the go kart ? I have the same one
+Nathan019283 I got it used for $300. But new they are about $1300.
Want to sell it ?
No thanks. It's a great kart.
Hello Clint,
Can you tell me name of the parts you used to mount the engine and where you get them from? i got the exact same yerf dog but is missing the mount for pulley and the big clutch. I also have a 6.5hp predator engine and would love to get it running. i would appreciated if you send me the specs of the driven pulley you used, the mount of the driven pulley, and also the driver clutch. Thank you!!
where do you buy those springs at?
I picked them up at Lowes from the hardware section where you can buy nuts and bolts.
