- Day 1 -- Qld Ride (Commission Road)
We decided while chatting at Grey Gums, to turn off the Putty before the Top 10-mile on Commission Rd.
This day was meant to be a short-easy day down the Putty and on to Scone via some back gravel roads getting ready for Barrington Tops.
Commission Rd starts straight up a turning hill with loose gravel. It is undulating but mainly climbs -- corrugated, rocky and rutted road for a good bit of its 63km. Sure it gets a lot easier towards the north-western end! However, the GS actually handles most of that stuff amazingly well, even though we were fully laden with topbox and panniers!
The tough part of the ride is the amount of sand that needed to be avoided and sometimes that wasn’t easy - it disguised itself as normal gravel but turned out to be deep-soft sand steering the bikes in its own direction.

Looks like it’s the access track for the transmission powerline I kept seeing?
That's why it is called Commission Rd - named after the old Electricity Commission of NSW (now called Transgrid).
