Stack On Gun Case Lock Replacement Key Lost
More fun vids on DIY stuff, here I am stepping through changing the lock on this gun case. Easy project, hardest part was finding the lock. Once you have it just a simple switch out.

I have three of these StackOn cabinets all keyed different. Figured someone had replaced them on TH-cam, thanks for finding the correct size, I got a 5 pack all keyed the same for under $20... StackOn wants $20 just to replace a key!!!
I think stack on hates happy customers.

Thanks for the information. The lock you mentioned did not exactly match the mechanism on my cabinet but could be adapted by drilling a single hole in the locking bar and bolting the lock plate (came with the lock) to the locking bar. Thank you.

I would’ve never guessed it but I used a pair of vise grips put it on the lock as tight as I could and turned it and it opened

Suggestion: You might want to blur out the key number on your new key in the video.
You can do blurring using TH-cam Studio on already-uploaded videos.
For similar reasons, in my videos, I didn't show my key, key number, or the specific brand of cabinet.

Too many other projects around the home.
Further mod on the cabinet is at this time a low priority.
To be sure, I do have a separate biometric quick access for actual home defense pieces, so I don’t need quick access to the cabinet.
I re locked my 4 stack on cabinets so they all share the same key, and had a much better lock. My only issue with this video is the barrel key lock. Just a bad choice considering the other options, and how easy they are to defeat.

@@shredcini honestly im not really sure what " kind" of lock it is...i was given the option by the locksmith i consulted. There were basically 3 types that fit- the crappy barrel locks, a basic cabinet lock key setup( just like the stock one), or the ones i went with. Ill look it up when i get done work, but the price difference was marginal... Maybe $15-$20 more than the cheapest lock for the " best" option on all 4.
I know the key is like the "new" car keys cut on the side of the key as opposed to the edge.
These are close to what i had installed... Not the exact ones but the keys look like these ones.

Its just a cabinet, not a safe, so i know im not " really" keeping anyone out, just slowing them down, and if i just had one cabinet id have left it be. BUT if you are like me and had multiples it just makes sence to go to a single key...but barrel locks are NOTORIOUSLY easy to defeat. And tutorials of one of the quickest methods for doing so is widely available online and only requires a bic pen.

@@shredcini no problem. Like i said im not really sure of those are the correct ones to use, but they are the " better" lock mechanism type. The sizing might be off for installation on a stackon cabinet. Either way barrel tpye locks are a lockpickers dream, and the method for defeating them is so easy, they make videos for children on how to pick them. In my youth i knew a guy that stole high end bicycles for a living( yeah hes a dirtbag... I know, and he has since moved on to bigger crimes and is now residing in a medium security state facility... And im not suprised) but even almost 15 years ago he would target this type of lock for the ease of breaking into. I honestly dont know why they still make these kinds of locks. It seems stupid to sell something to " prevent access" when it is known to be easily gotten around.

Yeah I'll be doing this. Broke one of two keys that came with the cabinet. Stack on wants me to pay to notarize a form, send them the form, then they will send me a key order to pay for. They can kiss my ass

Only other thing i got is I read an article somewhere that said there was some kind of code on the back of the safe, never proved it out since I went another way and mine was open.

Thats correct, it's a FJM Security 2400AS-KA Tubular Cam Lock with 5/8" Cylinder. I just got mine through amazon but its probably available elsewhere.
ShredderDIY - I grabbed a small green “SENTINEL” gun cabinet yesterday (for free) w/ the door unlocked & key missing just like you.. there’s a “KEY #” label on the back that corresponds to the lock in the event that the owner loses their original keys... DID YOU HAVE A SIMILAR LABEL?? If so, did you attempt calling the manufacturer for replacements?? I also have a pretty beefy “BRINKS” fire safe that has bith KEY & COMBO DIAL LOCKS, and the door is LOCKED!!! I was able to PICK THE KEY LOCK, but I’m screwed on the combo... It also has the KEY CODE tag on it, but 2 friends told me not to even bother calling Brinks because without a receipt, they won’t do it....
I’m wondering if you (or viewers) have had any experience with trying to get keys from the manufacturers using these codes... if the safe is OPEN and you can prove this to the company showing you have no nefarious intentions, I can’t imagine why they’d still require a receipt!! People pick these second hand safes up every day..

I initially went the route of contacting the manufacturer for a key and also their replacement lock but is was all back ordered so it sent me on the path of other options. I have found safe companies and also locksmiths are pretty strict on releasing info too but it never hurts to ask.

@@flojotube Just luck of the draw that day, it was there when I was dropping off trash. Lol. At our dump people leave stuff that is "too good to throw away" next to the big transfer dumpsters. If you happen to see it before the dump workers toss it in or grab it for themselves its yours for the taking.

Figured it was worth asking. I've accidentally thrown away my keys. My stack-on is locked. How do I break it? Stack-on will sell me a new lock and keys for an inexpensive price. Their customer service is slammed and unable to respond to me about the break-in part. Thanks.
@Jeffery Bell Cust Svc finally got in touch. Have directions to drill out. They are sending replacement lock and keys for free, the only problem is they are back ordered. So a wait game.
How did you go about getting the lock off? I have one I use for ammo and lost the key during a move. Don’t want to wait for a replacement key nor do I have a registration code for the safe

Bear NYG - sorry to butt in, but I saw your question and his reply and wanted to share my experience... hopefully it’s not too late...
when the lock is locked, entry can only be gained the good old fashioned ways:
1. Lock-picking
2. Drilling the lock cylinder out
3. Looking for other keys that will work
4. Causing severe damage
Here’s my explanation of each:
1. Picking these locks is a bit more difficult than the standard locks which are a breeze, but you can find astronomical loads of info online on how to best approach this method...
2. Drilling lock cylinders out is FAR EASIER than you may believe... Grab a good metal drill bit (same diameter, or slightly smaller, as the lock cylinder itself) and just DRILL STRAIGHT THRU!! Be cautious not to damage parts BEHIND or SURROUNDING the cylinder that would be needed when replacing the lock with a new one...
3. Finding a “random” key to fit your lock ISNT AS FAR-FETCHED an idea as most would believe... Lock manufacturers can only produce but so many different key/lock combos in their production runs of a specific lock... Therefore, AT SOME POINT, the same key that unlocks your lock will unlock HUNDREDS or even THOUSANDS of other consumer’s locks!!
If I’m not making sense, then here’s some simpler math... let’s say SENTINEL produced a gun safe with this round key lock... Whoever made the actual lock/key mechanism for them only produced (let’s say) 50 different key/lock sets where no 1 key could unlock any of the 49 other locks... MAKE SENSE???
This means, SOMEWHERE OUT THERE are plenty of keys that will unlock your safe....
How do you find keys to try? People sell LOTS of keys on eBay every day... In fact, I was able to buy elevator MASTER KEYS on eBay and the locks were round keyed exactly like these safe locks... some sellers will just sell you a sack full of the same type of key for $5-$10 because based on the little story I just told you, those keys are BOUND TO WORK on many of the locks a person will come in contact with.. Try as many of these round keys as you can, the technology IS FAR FROM PERFECT and you may find that even keys that are SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT will still open your lock..
4. Doing this will negate the need for a lock in most cases... I only recommend doing this if getting in is all you care about, OR you’re so angry at your lock that you decide murdering its host is the most justified means of revenge...

My key broke off in mine, I finally drilled it out with a bit a little larger than the center of the assembly. Once it got to the back of the lock it spun the bars and the door popped open. I am glad I found this video, the locks I have found they want $30, and Stack-On is a joke with what they want to know to send you a new lock, and it's $30 to get it from them. Ordering my lock today.

And if your cabinet is CLOSED when you lost your key, take a journey to Lock Picking Lawyer's channel for a tutorial how to pick it yourself.
Unfortunately that seems to be the weak point with most (not all) of these cabinets - cheap locks that are easily picked.
Luckily I found it at the dump and it was open!
