If I remember correctly, a level designer accidentally included two spawn points in one of the levels he created, and realized too late during testing. But when he did realize, he got morbidly curious how the engine would handle it. He expected either nothing special to happen, or for the game to crash deciding which spawn point to use. What he got instead was the engine producing a Double Cherry-like effect, in a strange interaction between the two spawn points and the engine's multiplayer functionality. So the devs stabilized the code surrounding this phenomenon, and turned it into one of my favorite powerups.

It's cool, and fun to use, and it's one of the power ups fully required to beat the game 100%, but I think it's too rare to get the full enjoyment from it and leave an impact.
My favorite is the double cherry. every time it shows up, I make peach grab a whole bunch of them and she becomes: THE PEACH BRIGADE! AND THEY WILL DESTROY YOU AND EVERYTHING YOU LOVE
I personally really like the Spring Mushroom from the Galaxy games. There's just something fun about watching Mario bounce around like a human slinky, control issues aside.
the blue shell from new super mario and the hammer bro suits are my favs, killing stuff that's normally invincible. the mini mushroom is cool too, while it weakens mario the extra mobility and being forced to ground pound for damage adds alot of fun.

My personal favorite of all time (Penguin is also my number 2) is the Blue Koopa Shell power up in New Super Mari Bros. DS. Such a fantastic item that made it so much fun to spin and slide across platforms at a breakneck speed, the jumping felt fluid and it more or less offered itself up to be a more powerful, faster, more fun and playful, infinite duration (until taking careless unavoidable damage) Super Star.
I'm sure you know already, but a fun fact about the double cherry is that it was accidentally made up. While testing with Multiplayer, they made it so that two marios were on the field being controlled by the first player instead of two characters being controlled by separate controllers. They liked the idea so much they made it a power up later on.
But you know what's better than 4 Mario's? An ARMY of Mario's! One of my favorite items will always be the Copy Flower from Mario&Luigi: Partners in Time. Seeing that army of crashing onto your opponents is just too satisfying.
I saw a lot of videos showing New Donk City and Nintendo looks like they have really fleshed out the Cap-ture system. It's impressive how well it's integrated into the world
I agree with the cape feather being #1, however I always got a better sense of the freedom of flight from the wing cap. Nothing like blasting out of a cannon and taking to the skies. Just wish the control was a bit better. But completely agree with the list!
Good List, JWittz! I've been playing a lot of Super Mario 64 recently, so I was hoping one of the caps would make the list, but understandably, these items are better.
Cape is definitely my favourite. Flight? More importantly, controllable and usable flight(looking at you Super Mario 64)? Check. Spammable melee attack? Check Breaks thegame? Check. Combined with Yoshi it can pretty much carry you through the level? Check What's not to love?
You chose the Tanooki Suit over the Super Leaf, but why not pick the Lucky Bell instead of the Super Bell in 3D World? Its Thwomp-esque ability is even better than the Tanooki's!

You wouldn't be able to get any power-ups (maybe from a toad house or multiplayer) without the Super-Mushroom, it deserves number 1.
