Worked on the Honda sales floor for two months in 2021 as a third-year Uni student (19). Sold nearly 40 cars, and my commission was roughly $17,000. I ended up doing many flats/low gross profit deals, but I would make up for it by reaching sales bonuses via monthly quotas; this would add an additional $1200-1800 each pay stub. I was also paid front end + a minimal margin on the backend. I highly recommend car sales, or sales in general if you desire to work directly with customers in a genuinely rewarding way.

lmao good luck with 6 day work week. 12 hours a day. at least 50-60 hours a week. have to grind every day for the whole month, if you dont sell, you end up with $0. Even being a realtor selling real estates still a better gig than car sales lol. Car sales is like the bottom of the bucket like door to door sales.

@Jeremiah Peprah bruh I used to work at a Toyota dealership when I was young and naive with no degrees. The salary you get is pretty much minimum wage. $2000/month ? for 60 hours/week ? lmao did you even do the math ? bitch please explain how you gonna pay bills nowadays with $2000/month when rent is skyrocket at $1500 for a 2 bedroom in LCOL area and $3000 for HCOL area ?? not including utilities insurance all that stuff ? unless you still living with your parents lol ? It
Lmao good luck with your 60-70 hours a week job, having to work weekend and standing in the sun all day long. Good luck dude, I'm glad I got out of car sales and get a degree instead. 3 years later now I'm working 40 hours/week REMOTELY from home, 14 days PTO, 10 sick days, full benefit, and making $130k in a LCOL area. Enjoy ur car sales career xD when you in car sales, you have no more personal life dude, you are pretty much married to the dealership sitting there all day long with the mindset of not being able to support your family if you don't sell, the pressure gonna kill your physical health (from standing outside on the sun waiting for customer all day, running around the lot moving cars etc) and mental health in a long term career buddy. It get worse if you have kids, not being able to see your kids when they go home from school, and missing weekend trips sure gonna make you a great father

I start my first day in car sales tomorrow, at a local Chevrolet dealership mostly focused on pickup trucks (we're in horse country). No draw, flat monthly base pay of $2k, 25% commission on profit from sales. It's not my first time in sales, but it is my first time in automotive sales or working mostly on commission (though $2k a month is better than most jobs I've ever had). Having spent a decade in fine dining/food and beverage im used to working 50-60 hours per week.

I get paid off the front end profit as well as the back end profit at my dealership. For example, I had a deal today where I sold this car that had 4K in profit off it on the front and with kick back from the financing bank and what the finance manager sales in warranty on the back it was additional $3,500. Total deal was $7,500. I got 24% commission off of that total deal. Not all dealerships will only pay you on the front end, this is all subject to change based off of what dealership you work at but like he said every pay plan is different even though I don’t do the finance portion of it I will still get paid off of the finance portion of it.
Edit: I would like to also add that I work at a dealership chain. The CEO of my dealership owns multiple dealership all over the northern part of America. I have another friend who works at another chain and gets the same type of pay plan so I would say the chain dealership would be the ones that have the best pay plan. Because of this pay structure I averaged selling about 17 cars a month and made 130k my very first year selling cars.

I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do car sales. I love cars. And have a lot of just book knowledge on them (don’t want me working on them… lol). I’m great with people and have a good work ethic. Im organized and always on time… if not early.
What’s held me back is the commission part of it. We have some great- like really good car dealerships here in town. Even so… my concern is quitting my job that I’m making $90,000 a year at (extremely stressed and not something I really enjoy anymore 7 years in the business) and go into this business doing something with cars and sales. I know I’d be great at it… but is it worth it!? Just fearful of taking that step into the unknown.
I’m married, have a nice house and cars, wife works too. She knows this is something I’ve wanted to do too, buuuuuttt her concern is the same- can we make ends meet still?
Is there health insurance, PTO, benefits to working at a dealership?

I see a lot of mixed comments calling people out who claimed they made 20k + in car sales in a single month. Ive worked pre-owned, new, a mix of both & ive sold luxury campers & powersports. I even did Kitchen sales for x8 years.
Im experienced in a variety of sales & commission rates.
For you newbies, im not throwing shade but be teachable.
What youll learn in this industry is you earn other things than income.
You earn pull with dealerships if you get known for bringing 20+ car sales as a monthly avg. Your going to have dealers knocking on your door with better offers everywhere. I dont apply anymore i get calls constantly.
Im wanted by a majority of dealerships in my area im now selling new and preowned and started at an 8% higher commission rate than anyone in my company. I put out 15 in my first month and i didnt break a sweat and made roughly 15k.
My top sales guy on the same lot made 33k last month after his sales bonuses.
It's definitely do-able its honeslty easy if you're truly built for it. If i could speak to a younger me its dont get your head stuck in the clouds, never say no too quick, & most importantly BE TEACHABLE too many sales guys get caught up in the confidence and fast cash.

Only prob I've seen with auto sales is the income doesn't really change yr over yr to account inflation, 20 yrs ago new car Internet deal front end paid $100 and used commission was same as today so if u killed it 2005 u likely had a nice house, cars vacas etc but today u are getting by , NYS anyway.... 150k doesn't get as far these days in ny

If a car dealer pays $10K and sells for $13k you’re probably getting a min deal $100-150. After they tack on pac(not pack, literally an acronym meaning protected against commision which is just to say they don’t pay you on it.) Then tax, title and doc fee($500-900 that you guessed right, they ain’t paying you on it). Not too mention that if they pay $10k for a car they are probably gonna pac it before it gets there and they pac it again. They pay $10k for a vehicle you can sell it for $15k out the door and they show you as a 3,000 loss on your deal. What are you going to do about it? You don’t know the numbers.
Then wait until you find out about dealer hold back lol. Where in new cars they get paid on about 3% of the sale as hold back but don’t pay you on it as an agreement with the manufacturer lol.
The number 1 motto when you start out is stay dumb as long as you can. Because when you realize how much the dealership rips you off you won’t want to work there.
Make $60k to maybe 70k. Sure. While working 48 scheduled hours a week. Be talked to and treated like trash. Be talked down if you only work the 48 hours. Work all day Saturday. Have split days off.
There’s a reason turnover is high af.

5k per month in commission. Don't do it then. Go get a b2b sales job. Work from home. Don't get a draw (get an actual base salary $60-150k). Then double that in commission.

We make nothing in the UK. My first month out of the box 25 years ago I sold 20 cars and made £1800 after tax. That’s six days a week 10 hours a day. The most I ever made was £5000. It’s just not worth it in the uk. It’s a piss poor career. I’m 48 years old and almost dead.

Are the pay plans something that’s supposed to be seen and signed by every salesperson? I’m working at a dealership now and I don’t know what my pay plan is. I’ve never seen it so I don’t know what I need to do to reach my goal, or even if I’m reaching my goal. #Help 😭

@@carsunlocked I also found out that in California (the state I’m in) by law, all dealerships is supposed to have our pay plans in writing and in language that we can understand. It’s supposed to be signed and dated the day we’re hired. I’ve been working here without seeing a pay plan for the last 3 months now. Haven’t seen not one dollar from any of the cars I’ve sold. Now that I’m asking questions about my pay plan, the GM is acting funny towards me like I did something wrong.

    Incorrect.
Front end is the UI/UX that customers see. Its responsible for displaying forms, the layout of the website/ etc etc
Back end is what handles processing things on the front end. For example, storing customer information to s database or evrn making service to service Api calls to different backends to get desired results

Congrats on nearly hitting 200k! . I have a similar history as you.. in my 5 years of auto-sales the first 3 was on the sales floor. Year 1, 55k. Year 2, 80k year 3 90kish.
Once I switched into sub prime (not actually sub prime per se, it’s just our way of describing the hybrid sales position) my income sky rocketed. Year 1 I made 185k. I’m now on year 2 and I’ve made $85k year to date. Yep, just 3 months.
It’s ridiculous how much money there is to be made in this industry and ESPECIALLY if you can master the art of sub prime (again, just another way of saying hybrid salesmen) as it is a very different process altogether. At least the way I do it anyways

Lots of things at play like, which market you're in, store, access to inventory, your ability to finesse approvals, etc etc but generally, you want to be at a domestic store for NEW, with used inventory compiled of vehicles between 2018-2024 for best ROI on deals.

You have to bust your ass, basically sell the car before they take the test drive….if you fall behind it can be stressful….the dealership and management are making a ton of money and only care if you sell and ride you like a booker with a method problem. lol it’s fun though….just don’t get behind…it sucks….
