  • What's up guys, it's Ollie from History Profiles and today I will be telling you about Locusta the first documented female serial killer in history. She was known to be an expert in herb lore and the art of poisons and this mastery would lead her into the inner circle or Rome's emperor's and empresses, anyway let's get into the video.

    I feel history lessons in school should incorporate more women, good and bad.
    There is an overwhelming amount of women that have been key characters in history, but we never hear anything of them.
    I feel not teaching the children about them is like saying: well, women were mostly not important enough to mention.
    Which, in turn, propagates misogyny and the likes.
    Sorry, for the rant, but every time I have the same reaction: I’VE NEVER HEARD OF HER, WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF HER!??!?!?
    As a woman, it is frustrating.

    • @StudM01
      @StudM01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We can tell stories of great men AND women without diving headfirst into identity politics and man-hating, which is usually where this particular road leads us to.
      So please be careful with that stuff, as it's more likely to turn feminism into a new kind of sexist bigotry than make men and women equals in value.
      And to correct a very typical false assumption of such feminist critics of history. Reasons that men feature more prominently in history is because for reasons of societal survival, men were treated as expendable enough to send into dangerous situations that got many of them killed, the few survivors of which were written about, celebrated, and remembered for their deeds by the histories BECAUSE those deeds were usually dangerous.
      In addition to their equally unique sacrifices, women had a tremendous benefit in that they were usually far safer than men by virtue of enjoying society's protection, but the consequence of that is that the relative lack of daring deeds that come from safety are less likely to be written about and remembered by the histories. Even gratuitous deaths like Locusta's (the subject of this video) we're admitted to be myths by the author who first popularized them, which is why he omitted the story from the second edition of his book.
      Too many third wave feminist critics of history fall into the false assumption that women are underrepresented because of sexism. They're not.
      The truth is that men and women suffered almost equally for the benefit of society's survival, but in different ways (women keep up the birth rate, while men work and fight). Women monopolize safety, while men monopolize fame. And neither privilege is more inherently valuable than the other.
      The only way to pretend otherwise is by failing to control one's bias.
      And simply ignoring men being the expendable ones while focusing on the fame is not going to convince me that men were the "lucky ones."
