It's Ollie from History Profiles and today's video will be about a woman named Alice Kyteler, an alleged sorceress, and the first woman to be accused of witchcraft in Ireland, which would spark a witch hysteria that lasted in Europe for another 300 years and would leave thousands of people dead. Anyway, let's get into the video.

I agree, I love Kilkenny I lived in callan for a few years , I'm from your favorite county Tipperary 😏 🌹 but I always found Kilkenny a much more interesting and fun place to live. Cool story I can't believe I never heard it yet I've often been to the pub.

Wow. Why is it that I only became interested in history after I graduated and started researching it on my own. It’s almost criminal how school teaches about certain topics. They make learning all this fascinating information boring and uninteresting. The way you teach history makes it so exhilarating.

I agree but I will also say there is some sample bias at work here. You will usually be clicking on and watching only those topics that interest you to some degree. Most history classes cover large swathes of history and movements within it. It can get boring even if you like history.

After seeing a few things in my life I have not a trace of a doubt witchcraft and witch's are real and true.
But if you get a confession under torture the only thing that confession proves is ignorant and barbaric you are and that you had tortured probably an innocent woman .
As under torture most people will confess to anything.
Many a pint ive had in Kytlers Inn, and back in late 90s we'd pop in the side door to Neros - and then fall up the steps of the Butterslip to Uncle Sams - great times!

Classic black widow pattern. The sad thing was that they didn't persecute her for her murderous nature, but because she was a wealthy woman, who would have had too much influence.

@@historyprofiles no, I think you got me wrong. Back in those days they didn't care about anything else, but about women who were gaining too much influence and power. This is the main reason some women were viewed as witches, and why mainly women were persecuted for witchcraft (occasionally some husband here and there, pulled in by the wife). They actually had a huge problem with influential women. So I mean that they didn't actually go after her because she was indeed a very nasty murderer. They went after her because she had way too much money, which meant independence, power and influence over others. She had to go for that reason.
The house maidens concussion was all because of the torture.
I would say she poisoned her husbands for money. She was smart. She was able to disappear.
why would it be so specific then? i don't disagree torture can make you can stuff but if you really havn't done something how can you be so specific instead of just a very basic confession?
Also, i hate the entire idea that torture will absolutely make someone talk which is a bit ridiculous because it hasn't always look at our modern day spec ops who get caught and tortured and don't say a thing
i think automatically believing that if their tortured they just say whatever to stop being tortured is kinda counter intuitive because they will be killed for their confession anyway
anyone who just sees that they were tortured and will say something because torture is just a cop out. like in the case of the knights templar people either think the templar did worship the devil or that the king just wanted to pay debt and i believe it was potentially both.
innocence does matter to some people, regardless torture is horrible especially so when done on the innocent

I am going to go with you on this. Whilst it is true that it could very well have been mere coincidence that all four husbands died - after all a smart woman intentionally married wealthy men twenty to thirty years her senior- the symptoms of the last husband raises red flags.
As far as witchcraft goes, I cannot take seriously any confession acquired under the auspices of torture. The tales are so wildly specific as not to be believed.

A very interesting story especially given it's from Ireland well from the past of Ireland. I've always wondered why if a individual has gotten away with murder why do it again?! It simply just doesn't make sense to me but she definitely without a doubt was mighty greedy.

It's always crazy to me how people will actually successfully get away with murder and then be stupid enough to do it again.

She wasn't stupid because she got away with it.
That's not unusual. If you get away with something wrong you'll get bolder and have less remorse, if any at all. That is particularly the case for severe crimes like r@pe and murder. Many of these people feel invincible indeed after some time. Plus, they become more experienced with every crime.
However, often these criminals get reckless considering themselves untouchable and thus, they often get sloppy and careless and if the sword comes down it happens out of nowhere for them. In short: getting away with crime leads to more and often more severe crimes.
She certainly wasn't very nice, but i would confess to ANYTHING under torture!

It’s easy to get 4 husbands when you’re forced to marry at 13. And let’s not forget he didn’t accuse her until she called in a Loan he owed and she refused his demand that she build him a new part of the church.
It is kind of amazing she wasn't locked away and/or burned! I don't understand how her poor maid was "convicted," when she wasn't deemed guilty!? Especially in that time period. So, that is a lil' suspish...
The maid was a normal woman so she had no connections to people with power except Alice herself, connections was everything back then and still is really. But Alice got away due to friends in high places and her vast wealth so I’m sure she could bribe anyone, anyway thank you for watching the video!!

Smart, ruthless woman in a world of men. Had a man done all this it'd be a triumphant tale of what a great man he was.
Oftentimes accusations of sorcery/ witchcraft were to be able to legally dispossess a wealthy woman of her estate, but in this case, I think it's pretty clear she did away with each of her husbands once she had ensured their wealth would be passed on to her. Whether she practiced sorcery, or just poisoned them, is not possible to discern any more. I suppose it also depends on whether you believe that it is real.

pharmakeia is the word we derive from greek for pharmacy or drugs and the word sorcery in a lot of texts is translated to pharmakeia
which admittedly seems to have a play in rituals of devil worship or "spells" used to make potions of whatever so their often intermingled

Back then, it wasn't uncommon for people to marry several times because death was a regular occurrence as they didn't have the medical care we have today. However it is very strange that the husbands left their own children out of their wills.... that's what I truly sets this apart.

My daughter's second name, from my partner's side of the family, is that of the last purported witch to be hanged in the UK.
I'm guessing that she possessed "forbidden" knowledge. Her areas of expertise were probably sex and toxicology. You don't need demons to be a major threat to people around you.

I don’t think that she consulted with the Devil. However she was At the time poisoning her husbands and that was actually considered witchcraft by the church. However the characters in these stories might have been changed around because I question the surnames of these people. At the time of Alice Kyteller. Surnames did in fact exist. I question the name of her servant girl Petranea. By the time of the 14th century Gaelic culture was entrenched into the aristocracy of Ireland the nobility spoke Gaelic and were more interested in doing things closer to the native Irish. Take for instance Gerald Fitzgerald the sorcerer. The so-called chancellor of Ireland at the time and the bishop. Possibly they could’ve been changed around their names. Also the use of scorpions what do people in the 13th century or 14th century Ireland know of scorpions? They’re not native to Ireland. Although that could’ve been acquired through trade but I doubt that’s highly unlikely.
But in Irish witchcraft there is the use of the cross roads. If you read Lady Wilde’s book ( Oscar Wilde’s mother) Irish charms cures and superstitions. She mentioned some thing of killing a black cock and burying it at the cross roads.
She was both!
She could have killed/poisoned her husbands after securing her place in her will OR she could just have been an outstanding wife and caretaker. Alice literally took the maidservant's daughter with her with her escape to England and may actually have taken care of the girl. Of course, that's just speculation but it's rather rare for a wealthy person to take care of the child of their own servant who also gave testimony(albeit under torture) that would have definitely led to a death sentence to all the participants.
I do believe she killed one of those husbands by poisoning him but I don't think she dabbled in witchcraft.

Unfortunately, history as taught in school is quite boring and uninteresting. It rather confused me when younger, as I loved to read biographies of famous men and women, and found their life stories fascinating. In college, once past the survey courses there was a great improvement, and I actually majored in English History. I think it greatly helped that the professors of the upper level courses had doctorates in history, showing their own interest.

On a serious note my opinion is that The Sorcereress of Kilkenny was a cruel and spiteful (but the OG) "gold-digger". Medieval peoples unfortunately for her were frenzied about witches and black magic, and that manifested in the gruesome events of torture and execution. Damn the bitch of Kilkenny!
I reckon she was just a greedy woman who could of possibly poisoned her husbands. It seems strange that the marriages lasted 7 years or so before they died, if she was trying to get super wealthy, you would expect her to kill them faster and not stay in the same area where she could be investigated by the bishop and hated by the common folk, you would of expected her to sell her land and buy some elsewhere, perhaps England or Scotland and move to there to get more influence in a more powerful and important country. It also seems strange that she never had any more children with any of her husbands after the 1st one.
She may of been a sorceress, but the maid who confessed was tortured, and you can get people to say anything under torture to get it to stop. Lots of people who were hated by the church were accused of such things, and i think very few of them actually attempted to commune with demons and do black magic rituals, however it would of definitly happened in some cases, but i think in this one it is unlikely, but poinsoning her husbands after they changed their will? Or she changed it under her husbands name? More likely.
All we know is that she was most likely greedy, since she was always the heir to her husbands's' money. Quite unusual that no first born son ever got any money. So: possibly greedy. Other than that: no one knows for sure. The only thing we know for sure is that sorcery and witchcraft doesn't exist, so her maid died in a horrible way for nothing. I read about the case on Wikipedia, so I know what happened to William: "community service" is indeed a good way to describe it. XD Suspect he lived a quiet life afterward.
I wonder how she ended up in the end. She completely disappears from the registers, so did she die? Did she change her name? No one knows... She could have been just unlucky with so many husbands dying suddenly, and basing it on the time - it could indeed happen in a natural way (bad food, probably, in some cases). But like many others, I do indeed suspect that she killed her husbands to get to their money. William was most likely involved. Oh well.

Its possible someone else like the stepsons did the killings and just blamed her of witchcraft. So they wouldn't be blamed for the killings themselves.
