Out of all the years i've known this game, this is the first time i've learned of Crystal Flash's existence. Love all the detail this game has, where i'm still learning stuff
I remember calling the Nintendo tip line to find out what it was when I saw it in the main menu idle demos. First and only time I ever called the tip line when I was a kid, lol. It also featured prominently as a plot device in the Super Metroid comic which ran in Nintendo Power. (Oh god, now I feel old. GET OFF MY LAWN!)
During the escape at the end of the game there is a room where a bunch of animals are trapped. During a casual playthrough of the game, you would run into these animals and they teach you how to wall jump and shinespark. If you go to the room the animals are trapped in during the escape you can destroy part of the wall to free them. During the final cutscene a pixel of their ship escaping will appear if you saved them. Saving the animals results in a slower time than letting them die which is where the phrase, "Save the frames, kill the animals" comes from. Hopes this answers your question :)
It’s 2 games added together, super Metroid and fusion, so if you save the animals in super Metroid you complete the game in fusion, but you get the newly added bad ending if you kill the animals
Super metroid almost 30y old, and i'm still impressed with the infinite ways to play, every time I watch a new video i learn new things, and impressed with the passion of the community, for shure will be my first favorite game forever.

As someone who is passionate about speedrunning, and has lost a number of family members to cancer, I have truly loved the GDQ events for years. I've fallen out of the speedrun community a little bit over the past year or so due to changes in my life but I'm hoping I will be able to get back into it soon and would one day love to be good enough to attend an event like this. Kudos to Zeni and to all the talented runners that showcased games at this year's AGDQ!

The whole "who wants to ______" - _cheer_ "and who wants to _______" *CHEER!!* is a bit of a broken, biased system of voting, because one party gets to hear how loud, and thus how much louder to be, the other party is.
It's not so much about how many people want it, it just matters who wants it most. If a small group can overpower a larger group by virtue of their passion and voice, they are granted justice in the form of victory.
ShinyZeni isn't so great? Are you kidding me? When was the last time you saw a player with such an ability and movement with Samus? Zeni puts the game in another level, and we will be blessed if we ever see a player with his skill and passion for the game again. Zoast breaks records. Oatsngoats breaks records. ShinyZeni breaks the rules. You can keep your statistics. I prefer the magic.
50:30 I had to rewatch this section to see if the low framerate was somehow a glitch he was exploiting, but it looks more like an issue with the video encoding.
In the game, in the demo playthrough when you are idle, there is a clip of Samus using X-Factor, and one using Crystal flash. Because of it, I learned how to do X-Factor, and that was cool. I didn't realize how powerful it was. But I never learned crystal flash! I did it once, but I didn't know what I did to do it. I never learned it because I didn't know I had to be
So how do you set up the controller for these? It seems like these runners are usually doing three things at once, like running while selecting items and shooting simultaneously.
Runners will typically do controller remaps to fit what they're most comfortable with. Then either they have their their index finger over X and Y while their thumb handles A and B (claw grip) or they position and use their thumb such that they can press/hold B, X, and either A or Y at the same time (fat finger grip). So yeah, they don't just have fast fingers. I run the game causally and there are occasional times where you have 3 buttons pressed at once.
I think I know what makes Super Metroid runs so fun. I have never played Super Metroid. Well at least not very much of it. But these are my favorite runs and I think its the couch that makes these so entertaining to watch. Well teh coach, the crowd, the host, and the donors make these runs so fun. Normally if a run is longer than 30 minutes I ignore it but not with this game. Oatsngoats is probably my favorite and I hope to see him run next GDQ
I wonder if the developers have watched any of these runs and what they think of it. It would be really interesting to know how many of these shortcuts that aren't obvious glitches were intentioned (like the entering the Wrecked Ship from the back door)
I think the developers intended for people to try this. Lots of health refills and energy tanks in the perfect areas. At least for Ridley. Going through Maridia without glitches seems impossible.
Going to say this: Kill hadn't won the Save/Kill bid war since SGDQ16. You guys asking them to save the animals have gotten what you wanted for over 2 years! Let us have a turn!
I saw mother brain miss one of those blue shots and it got me thinking. Could you save the Metroid? Is there a way to kill MB before she does enough damage to the baby metroid. Tas could probably dodge more than one shot and you were like 2 or so dodges away from killing MB prematurely probably.
if you lower mother brain's health to 0 during the fight, she dies right after you get rainbow beam. You can "save" the metroid, but that involves softlocking the game by putting the metroid out of reach of the onion rings when you are filled up with health
Can someone tell me in clear terms, what is the practical, functional difference between a reserve tank and an E tank? With auto mode, don't they basically just act the same? Or put differently, what's the benefit to having one over the other? And I don't mean because of specific glitches or nuances for speedrunning, I mean for normal playthroughs.
Short answer: not much. Flavor answer: I like to think the dev's added reserves to enhance the believability of how high tech Samus' suit is. Just like in any action packed sifi.. When things get ugly the reserves kick in to save the day! Real answer: pretty much just those two combined. Kind of a second chance for beginers to try and step back and work their way out if dire straits. In advanced game play, such as the randomizer tournament, high level players don't even pick up reserve tanks at times cuz they are almost useless unless they are short on e-tanks and heat runs are inevitable. They come empty and must be filled before they are of use and they don't fill up your energy either. Somthing that e-tanks do and can be a saving grace in runs such as this one, actually making it possible to pull off. In the end: reserves are just another fun dynamic in a beautifully well made game. They don't really serve much of a purpose once you know the game and just play casually, yet are another dynamic these guys have exploited in the right situations to, yet again, pull off the unthinkable.
At around 7:43 they say that skipping bomb Torizo is humanly impossible, however when I played on the SNES classic mini the first time I completely skipped him just by walking out. It was also my first time playing so I didn't even know there was a boss in the room until I played it again. Any ideas on how that happened? Is the ROM Nintendo used known to have some hiccups?
The most reasonable explanation would be that it didn't actually happen and you're certainly just misremembering what happened, most likely due to the fact that there is many similar looking rooms this room can be confused with, and as long as one doesn't collect the bombs, one can just exit the room again but cannot get out of the area until going back and taking the bombs which awakes Bomb Torizo.
Man, what I wouldn't give to be able to go to one of these events. I've watched for quite a few years but I really enjoyed this year especially, and those final donations for kill...nice!

I am Japanese. I know the reason for killing the Animals is to shorten the time. Why go to the Animal's place and pretend to kill it? And why is the venue cheering? Can anyone tell me? (In Japan's RTA, the Animals are often saved.)
At one point during our many private conversations, I told Sniq that there was some odd quirk with moonwalk where Samus appeared to quickly double jump on ground which I observed many years ago during tests since I was interested in experimenting with all kinds of mechanics of the game rather than just the prominent ones (so I guess with some more luck, moonfall could have been found much earlier). Sniq then immediately when I told him about it tested it and realized that it enabled uncapped indefinitely increasing fall speed (because he had done tests before with for experimentation purposes cheated memory address values that'd simulate this situation), which is what we coined moonfall. Then a long later after various applications of it were already found by us, Sniq came up with the idea that one could carve out a space of that bomb block wall in Dachora's room and also realized one could unmorph beneath the ceiling slope tile to stand in there to start repeated moonfalls there without the fall speed being reset upon landing each time, until clipping to the ground eventually and walking to the left room to do 1 more moonfall to clip through the floor and he told me about this but mentioned that there was still a problem for human players (although he already confirmed that for TAS circumstances there would be no hindrance anymore) if they wanted to do this so-called Moondance, because they'd step by step move further outside of the block Samus is in if all the blocks on the left side are gone, which would lead the process to a halt far too soon. And for the last step that was needed to make it applicable for human players, in response I then mentioned the idea to leave the top left bomb block next to Samus' head in place as it shouldn't get in the way of the Moondance and would allow Samus to turn around leftwards without slightly moving outside of the block (but Sniq probably eventually would have thought of this on his own, anyway).

Someone should make a "Impossible Fusion" mod where you literally cannot beat the game because you kill the animals in Super Metroid.

Love super metroid, was my first metroid game i played, never thought one could beat the bosses from the strongest to the easiest. Great job.

Reserve Tanks can be popped manually so they're great for sequence breaking in Norfair

Then a long later after various applications of it were already found by us, Sniq came up with the idea that one could carve out a space of that bomb block wall in Dachora's room and also realized one could unmorph beneath the ceiling slope tile to stand in there to start repeated moonfalls there without the fall speed being reset upon landing each time, until clipping to the ground eventually and walking to the left room to do 1 more moonfall to clip through the floor and he told me about this but mentioned that there was still a problem for human players (although he already confirmed that for TAS circumstances there would be no hindrance anymore) if they wanted to do this so-called Moondance, because they'd step by step move further outside of the block Samus is in if all the blocks on the left side are gone, which would lead the process to a halt far too soon.
