"Beethoven" was the perfect track to open Eurythmics' most creatively different from the albums before it. Synth colored their 1st -3rd while rock 4th and fifth. With this record, the band proved they still had plenty of creahivity in their veins. My fave!
I agree. And its' so amazing how their strongest, most unified album go such little attention (at least in the US). They went out with a bang, but no one seemed to hear it. MTV barely glossed over these videos.
It sounds a bit mad but in the UK when this came out we only had 4 tv channels, no 24 hour mtv or cable or whatever. The UK was a bit more dark overall the feeling in the 80s until acid house and rave kicked of a sort of cultural revolution. Maybe not having everything on tap made artists more creative.
But the clip is not about sitting at home. It is about an internal dialog at the background of a human mind. The initial look of Annie Lennox means an internal parent, the girl means an internal child and the man in the dress means a shadow (rejected and forbidden features and desires of a psyche). At the end they joined together and went out (came out).

Annie was promised a leading role along Nigel Pivaro in a remake of The Graduate. But the plan was called off and Annie made this song as a bitter rebuff at Hollywood bosses.
I always felt that the Eurythmics and later Annie on her own really 'got' what video could do for a song. If you listen to just the song alone, you get the sense of a woman on the edge about to snap, but when you see this video, you get that even more intensely. It really enhances the song, and tells a story that leads into the other videos for the singles from this album. 'I Need A Man', also from Savage, features the character striding off at the end...I dont think anyone else did stories.
Aside from the fantastic music they put out, the Eurythmics could also be counted on creating some truly great videos that still hold up decades later. If Annie had not been in music, she certainly had the skills to be a great actor.
