Those frame-skipping sequences, (for lack of a more technical name), have got to be tricky to do! All the while that her head is jumping from one position to another, her lips are still in sync with the song's lyrics... I don't know, maybe it's not as tricky as it seems but it sure looks like it took talent to create. I loved this song from day one and I usually never pay much tribute to music videos because I'm of the opinion that if the song can't stand w/o a video, then it wasn't a song worth listening to. Of course, this song can stand alone with no problem and the video they created for it is icing on the cake, excellent! FWIW
Yes! This video was really trippy.. and it borrowed elements of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer".. this was more polished and S&M-ish with Annie being so model-esque and borrowing Madonna's look at the time... Too cool!
Wow, I can't believe the original video must have been shot on film? Much more expensive, but so worth it when you can see it in high-definition 30 years later!
If Ghost brought you here, that's fine, at least you got here. "Sweet Dreams" got all the attention and rightfully so, it was a great song. If not for this fine video, "Missionary Man" might have gone unnoticed, and that would have been a shame. With a hard driving beat, great backup vocals, killer harmonica that steps right up to the front, and Annie looking as hot as ever. This song shows the Eurythmics at their rocking best.
A long time ago I was about to turn 18 and had little interest in synth-pop. One day while walking around a mall I noticed this was playing on a television screen and the sheer energy of the song immediately caught my attention. A few weeks later - 21 June, on Music Day I can remember well - I found a compilation of Eurythmics hits, which I bought. These days I mostly listen to Kim Wilde, Tears for Fears or Depeche but Eurythmics was really the first synth-pop act that had me thrilled.
It's difficult to cover Annie Lennox. Even Manson's take on sweet dreams wasn't as dark as the original. I'm a huge ghost fan, but I doubt that there will be the ferocity of Annie in their version. Can't wait to hear it though.
Wasn't wowed by ghosts version, it felt like they just phoned in a karaoke version really. So far, Marilyn Manson has done the best eurythmics cover that I have heard. Annie is one talented vocalist, and you'd really have to deconstruct a song and make it your own to escape comparison with her. Manson at least achieved that somewhat, and he had the ferocity to pull it off. Still, bible and square hammer saved that EP from being a total crap bowl.
I heard it. Wanted to like it, but other than the bridge/solo section, I felt their rendition is as you said...lacked sincere darkness (and also lacked Stewarts production-craft). Her voice, for a white Scottish woman, carries an immense amount of character drawn from classic American church, which itself leads with the weight of sin and redemption in the delivery. Ghost is a solid rock outfit, but their rendition of this isn't their forte...
I am always about 20 years behind pop tastes. The Eurythmics Rock. I just sort of remember not particularly liking them. They stood the test of time and Annie Lennox is pretty and strong.
Thought I'd check out the original since I keep playing the "Ghost" version too much. Such a strong performance from Annie Lennox in this video both performance wise and vocally...mucho respecto...
Well I was born an original sinner. I was borne from original sin. And if I had a dollar bill For all the things I've done There'd be a mountain of money Piled up to my chin My mother told me good My mother told me strong. She said "Be true to yourself And you can't go wrong." "But there's just one thing That you must understand." "You can fool with your brother But don't mess with a missionary man." Don't mess with a missionary man. Don't mess with a missionary man. Well the missionary man He's got god on his side. He's got the saints and apostles Backin' up from behind. Black eyed looks from those bible books. He's a man with a mission Got a serious mind. There was a woman in the jungle And a monkey on a tree. The missionary man he was followin' me. He said "Stop what you're doing." "Get down upon your knees." "I've a message for you that you better believe."
This song is great and the harmonica and backup singer is the icing on the cake. I don't care what anyone says, you can keep todays music and just send me back to the 80's, that is when music was the BEST period.
Been a long time since I watched this video in the 80's. I'd forgotten (or maybe never realized) how beautiful Annie Lennox was. Her voice was always incredible, of course.

Too cool!
It is a feat for sure for the mid 80s. The stop motion too with her head.
Wow, I can't believe the original video must have been shot on film? Much more expensive, but so worth it when you can see it in high-definition 30 years later!
Annie was the real Queen of the 80's. So beautiful and with that amazing voice!
BEST EIGHTIES DUO OF ALL-TIME. ANNIE LENNOX ROCKS!!!!
The back up singer has some great pipes...!
Undisputably.
Truly gifted
A long time ago I was about to turn 18 and had little interest in synth-pop. One day while walking around a mall I noticed this was playing on a television screen and the sheer energy of the song immediately caught my attention. A few weeks later - 21 June, on Music Day I can remember well - I found a compilation of Eurythmics hits, which I bought. These days I mostly listen to Kim Wilde, Tears for Fears or Depeche but Eurythmics was really the first synth-pop act that had me thrilled.
Have not heard this song for years
First time
It's difficult to cover Annie Lennox. Even Manson's take on sweet dreams wasn't as dark as the original. I'm a huge ghost fan, but I doubt that there will be the ferocity of Annie in their version. Can't wait to hear it though.
well... they did their own thing ;)
OFC she is hahahaha :p
Wasn't wowed by ghosts version, it felt like they just phoned in a karaoke version really. So far, Marilyn Manson has done the best eurythmics cover that I have heard. Annie is one talented vocalist, and you'd really have to deconstruct a song and make it your own to escape comparison with her. Manson at least achieved that somewhat, and he had the ferocity to pull it off. Still, bible and square hammer saved that EP from being a total crap bowl.
Yeah...Ghost doesn't have the hard edge I like. Especially for a song about the fallen.
Such a banger after all these years
Annie Lennox has the VOICE, the look and the attitude of a female boss. Love U, Annie
#Classic. #MissionaryMan Whose still loving this in 2019 with the awesome old school power of MTV? 😎🎤🌟🎼💕✨🎶🎵🎧🎸⭐️
She is like an alien, cold and aloof and so cool and then there is Dave with his guitar, 80s icons. Her voice is mesmerising too......
Thought I'd check out the original since I keep playing the "Ghost" version too much. Such a strong performance from Annie Lennox in this video both performance wise and vocally...mucho respecto...
Well I was born an original sinner.
I was borne from original sin.
And if I had a dollar bill
For all the things I've done
There'd be a mountain of money
Piled up to my chin
My mother told me good
My mother told me strong.
She said "Be true to yourself
And you can't go wrong."
"But there's just one thing
That you must understand."
"You can fool with your brother
But don't mess with a missionary man."
Don't mess with a missionary man.
Don't mess with a missionary man.
Well the missionary man
He's got god on his side.
He's got the saints and apostles
Backin' up from behind.
Black eyed looks from those bible books.
He's a man with a mission
Got a serious mind.
There was a woman in the jungle
And a monkey on a tree.
The missionary man he was followin' me.
He said "Stop what you're doing."
"Get down upon your knees."
"I've a message for you that you better believe."
She looks very striking
Remember listening to this masterpiece when I was 7 on radio
This song is great and the harmonica and backup singer is the icing on the cake. I don't care what anyone says, you can keep todays music and just send me back to the 80's, that is when music was the BEST period.
God, I miss those times back then! Gaga & Madonna can't hold a candle to her kind of brilliance back then...
you are so right. not even Joplin compares but I still love Janis
I miss that decade too. The 80’s rocked. I was blessed to be a teen through the 80’s. Born in the 70’s
Been a long time since I watched this video in the 80's. I'd forgotten (or maybe never realized) how beautiful Annie Lennox was. Her voice was always incredible, of course.
Searing, electrifying and 100% dope AF forever, from back in the day when vanilla MTV aired music videos and cool cartoons until the corporate bosses realized that music videos were uniting we the people in solidarity so they pulled the plug.
Love Love Love this song! Always have and always will! The aggressive mix, musicianship and vocals made this a killer song. I miss this group.
This is when Music was Edgy But very Classy! We LOVE Annie Lennox!
Unforgettable.
God, she is just stunning in these video shots! Just as I remembered her on MTv some 35 to 40 years ago.
Miss this good music
Eurythmics videos were always works of art in themselves and really interesting and sometimes really dark.
