  • This summer we backpacked the northern half of the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks. We brought our dog, Hopper, and started at Wakely Dam. We hiked up to Lake Placid, New York, for a total of approximately 75 miles, with a resupply stop in Long Lake.
Although it was rainy for several days, the NPT was absolutely beautiful. From conifer forests to waterfalls, to lots of beaver crossings, to some killer lean-tos, it was an amazing adventure. We originally wanted the hike to be extra relaxed, so we added in a few chill days at camp; but since the weather was iffy and the hiking ended up being faster than we thought, we ended up cranking out our 8-day hike in 6 days.
Check out our NPT backpacking adventure here, and let me know your thoughts on the southern section, too-now I need to plan our hike for the second half!

Ha! He had to trudge 5 days through the rain but he was a great sport throughout the whole adventure (and got lots of treats as a reward). Hopefully when we do the southern section it's slightly sunnier...

Love that section along the Cold River, where the last Adirondack Hermit lived(Noah John Rondeau)in Cold River City, population 1. Been there many times and my husband was the caretaker for the Moose Pond lean-to for a season. Too old to hike now, but nice to see some familiar turf, once more. Glad you had a good time. The Cold River country is a personal Shangri-La.

Great info and beautiful hike. What pack do you have for your pup? It seemed roomy and I’m looking for one for my collie boy Finn. Thank in advance.

    How were mosquitoes??

    • @hikenyc1643

We actually didn't have any issues with mosquitos at all!! I was a little nervous about bugs (I had heard to be ready for mosquitos/black flies/etc.) but we got lucky, I guess, and didn't have any problems. Maybe the rain helped? Either way, we were extremely pleasantly surprised. We also didn't encounter any mice or critters in our lean-tos, which others had warned us about.

Can you give me some advice about were to pick up the trail

    • @hikenyc1643

We started at Wakely Dam because we didn't have time to do the whole thing in one go, so we split it up into two section hikes. Wakely Dam starts at a backcountry service road (would recommend a 4-wheel drive car for that). It's about halfway through the trail, and we headed northbound. The trail does have a couple of more exit points; I think a lot of people start at Long Lake, as well, which is a little town and popular resupply spot about 37 miles or so from Lake Placid. Good luck!
