  • Spend a day with Barb and I as we brave tent camping in cold weather and enjoy a short Adirondack canoe trip on opening weekend at one of the best places to camp in the Adirondacks - Fish Creek Ponds Campground in NY. We love camping in the Adirondack Mountains. Be sure to subscribe and follow along as we canoe and canoe camp the most beautiful areas you will ever see in the Adirondacks. I'm paddling a Placid Boatworks Rapidfire and my wife is paddling a Swift Cruiser 12.8 which are lightweight solo canoes.

      My wife was a trooper on this trip. It got pretty darn and she handled it well. She paddled through the ice for fun a couple of times and nearly gave me a heart attack. I left it out of the video because I didn't want to encourage anyone to do the same.

      Some sites are spread apart more than others. This time of year (after Labor Day) the traffic at Fish Creek really slows down so you could very well be flanked by empty sites. Enjoy your trip.

    Is the DEC Campgrounds unofficially open during the winter? Thanks.

    • @CanoeCampClimb
      @CanoeCampClimb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question Mark. I was told by a DEC official that the DEC campgrounds revert to primitive camping rules after they close. At FC.... you will see ice fisherman and sometimes snowmobilers camped there. On the flip side... I have heard from other people "in the know" say that it is not allowed. I tend to believe the DEC official. But I suggest calling the DEC. They are very responsive. In this video it was the official opening weekend of 2022.

    • @CanoeCampClimb
      @CanoeCampClimb  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fish Creek Ponds is an excellent choice as a basecamp. I'd make reservations first. If they are booked give Rollins Pond a try. There are some high peaks close by (The Seward Range) if you want a more hardcore hike... mid-level hikes like Ampersand Mountain and Saint Regis Mountain.... or easier hikes like Coney Mountain or Baker Mountain... and flat hikes like the Floodwood Loop or Otter Hollow Loop.

    Do you have to rent sites or can you just find a lot to park your vehicle for a few days while you’re out hiking?

    • @CanoeCampClimb
      @CanoeCampClimb  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You have to reserve a site at Fish Creek. If you are tent camping you may be able to get away without reservations... but I do recommend making a reservation. If you are looking for a multi-day hike where you can leave your car in the parking lot you may want to consider the Cranberry Lake 50.
      cranberrylake50.org/
      OR
      the Northville Placid Trail:
      cnyhiking.com/Northville-PlacidTrail.htm

    Tarp goes in the tent. Outside holds water against against the tent.

    • @CanoeCampClimb
      @CanoeCampClimb  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Donald. That wasn't a tarp under the tent. It is a woven camp rug that doesn't hold water. It was just to keep sand off the bottom of the tent and add a bit of ground insulation. But yes.... I see people do the tarp thing which can cause water to enter the tub of the tent.
