This bench has been in my workroom since last fall. It has supported people's bums for 8 years in my tattoo shop, but back in the fall, someone sat on it a little weird and it broke. I'm FINALLY getting around to looking at it. In this video, I address some of the problems with the design of it, and try to figure out ways to prolong it's life just a bit more. I give it a custom Odie's Oil & Pigment stain finish that turned out just how I pictured it, and although I plan to repurpose this piece in the future, it's ready for more bottoms until then. lol

Museum professional here: if an item does not have a clearly discernable individual provenance, it has no history. You restore it to factory standards at that point.

This was really informative. Your videos are so helpful to me because you don’t just show what you do. You explain why you’re making the choices you make for each piece of furniture. I love the way the bench turned out. I also enjoyed your side trip and watching Nacho inspect your work. The music was lovely, too.🌸

You have to have the mind of an engineer to do the work you do. You have to have a concept of structure and just how a piece was originally made to fit together. I loved the drive in the woods. What beautiful scenery. I did not realize you were still trying to maintain your tattoo shop though. When in the world do you and Andrea have any time to share fun things? Don't overdo, Angie. It's my belief that you have only one life. Don't neglect time for you and the people you love. I have to let you know that Nacho looks so much like a sweet kitty we had for 19 years. Our kitty was named Elmo. It was hard to let him go. He was such a character.

Ok I have so many praises for this project! This piece is not “ high end “ yet you took so much time and care to make it useful again! Every single piece of furniture kept out of a landfill is a victory for Mother Earth! Full on repair , reconstructed and then refinished … what a happy ending for a piece that someone else would have burned or thrown away . 🎉

I’ve got/had a few pieces of Wicker Emporium. Hardwood of some sort - not consistent throughout the construction. At least they’re wood. The craftsmanship leaves something to be desired: but hey, you can’t have it all. I suspected the wood was reincarnated from construction debris. I love the warm toast colour you mixed for it too. Complements Natcho’s coat well. Once again, a hopeless piece turned into a lovely, useful item.

What strikes me about your videos (other than the stunning results) is your genuine care for the piece you’re working on and your apparent love for the craft. Even this “short-term fix” ends up looking gorgeous and so full of life 😍

You have made me think about why I like pine. It's a combination of things. 1- the strange, uneven and often gnarly grain patterns are a kind of abstract beauty for me. I also love hickory because each piece is so individual. But pine isnt nearly so sophisticated and artsy. Its gutsy and robust in texture. It fits with the rustic architecture I enjoy. 2- Most of all, since I live in a grain growing area and see 200 year old hardwoods plowed over, Shoved into big holes, Burned and covered with dirt to make way for subdivisions, I mourn those big old trees, and every piece made of the more renewable pine is one less bit of demand for scarce hardwood. None of that applies to you because you work so hard to use the old, rather that purchase new hardwoods. Even a lowly pine bench turns beautiful in your hands. I love seeing what you can do. The bench is better now than it was before. Thank you, Angie.

    • @TranscendFurnitureGallery
      @TranscendFurnitureGallery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you very much for the kind words Cassondra, although I will say the mental image of those beautiful old trees burning makes me sad. We're so abusive to this planet and the resources on it. Thanks so much for watching and thank you for appreciating wood in all its natural wonder!

I love watching you work. You restore some gorgeous furniture to it's former glory and even the less than gorgeous pieces end up looking fantastic.
Very informative and as a big fan of MCM furniture it's been very helpful of you to discuss the painting controversy as you tackle each piece. I have a better understanding of why some flippers would resort to paint. It's also just where they are in "their journey" as you explained. I love that way of thinking. And I promise not to engage in arguments with the "paint-it crowd" . 😂
I also love tattoos and polydactyl kitties. Nacho is wonderful! I have some fun ink and a magnificent polydactyl tuxedo guy with extra toes front and back. His name is Flapjack. 💕

Hi, Angie. I enjoyed learning about wood inserts & the double bolt technique. I recently wanted to remove hanger bolts so I could sand some legs completely. I used the double bolt technique there, too. You mentioned trying to get out of tattooing & that it won’t be long now. I am excited for your career change! I just retired & I feel peace. Like when you drive into nature. Thank you for sharing yourself & your skills with us. You are wonderful!!

Precious polydactyl Nacho. I love orange polydactyl cats. I've had two. Little lovers. As for the much improved bench, I hope we get to see how you repurpose it some day.

If you want to repair quirks and dents in solid wood, take the power of water and baste and flood the area for a night. The fibers of the annual rings then straighten up again and the cell structure expands again through the water. Then dry well with a hair dryer (bone dry) and grind. Complete .

I’ve done similar methods for gouges and dents. But in this project, I actually like all the marks and dings. :-)

Thank you for another great restoration. The bench is wonderful. I have pine that needs stripping and would have gone straight in with 80. Now I know different. Thank you.

You've done a great job turning a beat up horrible looking thing into something great. Liked the little breakout into nature too. Looks like sasquatch country.

Due to the flaws in the construction it would never last long term for this purpose. It will last as long as I need it to though and then I can repurpose the wood for something else to again give it another chance at life. Thanks for watching!

Oh man, I really enjoyed your drive in the country, it was just magical. The bench is a real winner, you’ve totally improved on the original. I predict that it has a lot more life in it now, more than a year for sure.

Wow, you really made that bench look so much better than it was! Love your stain mixing process. Where i work we used to do stain matches but it got to be quite too kuch and people can be very demanding. Not one would understand that different woods takes stains differently, but they wanted their dark oak stain the look the same on poplar as it does on oak. God forbid if they had red oak vs white oak! We got tired of the arguments and stopped matching stains. Some of the wood trim I'm currently seeing is birch n poplar fused together! Not sure why thats being done but I know ill never buy it for inside trim of any place I live. Anyway, love Nacho and your videos including your fur babies in them. I also love that you take a break and go for a drive when needed! Self care is extremely crucial! Sending positive vibes to you and loving your videos!

I'm convinced some people just want to argue, I don't think it matters much to them if they're right or not. They just thrive off it. Thank you again for a great comment!

Angie! Your bench turned out so handsome! I think Nacho was inspecting it out to see if the color coordinated with his fur, don't you? The original construction was doubtless by some tiny elves who had too much grog before and during building the bench. The polka dot look from the knots is really cute. I hope you get to enjoy it for a long time, even if you are no longer doing tats. 🥳🧡
