    I have been putting sedum stem cuttings in sand by the hundreds for years with amazing results. I didn't think the leaf cuttings would work but they did. Unlimited free plants! I'm trying this method in sand and in pots with soil next. The glass of water method is good for long stem cuttings but i found they root much faster in sand for me. Thanks for the info!

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to message and share your method. Yes, rooting in sand works really well, especially if you live in a wetter climate or take the cuttings later in the year.
      If you have grown hundreds then what do you do with them all?😂

    Got some lage cuttings from my Mom's garden. Downloaded a plant identification app...had no idea they were succulents and immediately started leaf probation and now have many beautiful bushes in containers around my yard. I love love love free plants, lol. Thank you for the tips!

      Amanda, many thanks for your message so pleased that the video has helped you.
      Sedum are such an underrated plant, giving autumn flower colour for such a long time and they need hardly any care. Win win.
      Enjoy your gardening 🌸🌼

    Hi, I'm 3 years late to the party, but I have some sedum's i got from my Mum's garden after she passed. So i am intrested in taking some cutting. After watching your video I know how to now, but my question is when is the best time to take these cuttings? Would it be best at the end of summer? autumn / september time? when I plan to cut back the plant. I will be keeping them indoors until next summer, [unless you tell me otherwise]. Go easy, I'm new in the gardening and plants world & cuttings etc. Many thanks for the video.

      Hi. Many thanks for watching the video and for the message.
      Really nice that you are now getting into gardening and have some plants of sentimental importance to you.
      Sedums are great because cuttings can be taken throughout the year.
      Have your plants got flower buds forming?
      If you take cuttings now then just bare in mind that you will be doing so at the expense of getting flowers.
      As you are new to propagation then I would suggest to just use 1 stem as your experimental for this time of year.
      You can then use each of the individual leaves, as well as the final top of plant if not with flower buds, for your propagation work.
      Depending on what the seasonal temperature and climate is like where you live then I would recommend leaving the cuttings outside until the temperatures drop and frosts are forecast. You only then need to provide a little bit of protection from excessive cold and wet weather conditions.
      For reference, Sedum cuttings are always quicker to establish in spring and summer.
      I hope this helps you but if not then just ask. I am also on Instagram, under the same name, if that is an easier way for you.
      All the best with your gardening journey 🌼🌸

    Ha, I am making a hens and chicks garden in the front garden of our communal camp ground. It's hot and dry. I will be taking notes! Thanks from Sproat Lake on Vancouver Island.

    Would summer cuttings work?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Angela.
      Thanks for watching and your message.
      Yes you can easily take cuttings of sedum in the summer.
      You are fine to just taking leaf cuttings but if you do stem cuttings you will definitely reduce the amount of flowers that are produced this year.
      Hope this helps.
      All the best 🌸🪴

      Hi Letty.
      Many thanks for watching and the question.
      The Sedum in this video is called ‘Autumn Joy’. It’s a tough variety and very reliable for producing flower.
      The bees love it.
      Happy gardening 🌸

    Should I put the cuttings in a greenhouse.. or leave them outside? I'm in Devon, UK

      Hi Julie. Thanks for watching and your message. Just leave the cuttings outside. Put them in a bright position but out of full sun, so they don’t dry out too quickly.

    If your succulents and garden plants are too dry, you can try mulching, which keeps moisture in. Bark chips purchased from a garden or landscaping company will work without passing on possible pests or diseases. Mulch also encourages earthworms which don’t like dryness either.
    Could you please talk about using cuttings of the short ground cover type of sedum? I’ve purchased five 4-5” cuttings of Blue Spruce sedum and need to plant them inside, here in Minnesota. If I put them in water or soil to root, how much of the stem should I take leaves off?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your message.
      Not sure what your climate is like but in the U.K. if we apply mulch around succulent plants like Sedum then that will rot at ground level.
      If you are using bark mulch then remember that you will have to add additional nitrogen feed as bark pulls nitrogen from the soil as it decomposes.
      You can take cuttings of ground cover Sedum in exactly the same way, either by leaf or stem cuttings. Equally you can propagate by layering the ground cover types. Most Sedums will readily root in a cup of water too, so perhaps experiment which methods are best for you and your climate. Enjoy your gardening and trialling.

      @@diyhomeandgardening Thanks for replying! I’m in Minnesota, which is colder than the UK; the Scottish Highlands come the closest, but still not as cold. It’s also quite humid; our state motto is Land of Ten Thousand Lakes. I gardened here for over forty-five years and whether in clay or now in Oak Savannah, where it’s sand clear down to our deepest aquafers, and I always have used organic mulch. Some I composted myself, some came from community compost sights, one that was made with lake dredgings.
      I love sedums and used them for ‘rivers’ of color between perennials, big rocks and annual 🌺s. Now I’m unable to garden outside, so I’m building an ‘indoor garden’ of cacti and succulents and a few amaryllises. I shall have greenery and 🌸s wherever I go!

      Where I live, in Essex, the soil is clay with underlying chalk. It’s heavy and wet during winter and very dry during summer as we have so little rain. The back garden is better for moisture retention during summer.
      Glad to hear you are still gardening. Have you seen my video on me building a coffee table, full of succulents, you may find the idea interesting.

    After placing the stem cuttings, how long do I wait to water?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your message. I literally don’t bother to water again until the compost is almost totally dry again, or until fresh growth appears. Whichever happens sooner. If you overwater then the cuttings just rot.
