- The only thing better than hydrangeas? More hydrangeas! If you're looking to grow more hydrangeas (and not spend a dime), this video is for you! This beautiful plant with showy blooms is a staple in any southern yard, and it's easier than you think to propagate. I'll show you a quick, easy, and cheap way to propagate hydrangeas at home.

The first step to hydrangea propagation is getting a cutting from the mother plant. To begin, you'll want to take some softwood cuttings from your hydrangea. Don't forget to thoroughly disinfect your pruners before you get started! Also, you'll want to have an empty, well-washed plastic jug (a milk jug works great) in order to create a mini greenhouse; this will help keep your hydrangea cuttings humid while they propagate.
Hydrangea macrophylla is the variety that we'll be propagating in this video. I love the light blue color of this hydrangea in particular. We should have some roots in about a month or so, so be sure to subscribe to Grass Roots Gardening for an update, as well as more great content on gardening, landscaping, and all things plants.
Thanks for watching, y'all!

#hydrangeas #hydrangea - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
The interesting thing about hydrangeas is that they have the ability to root all along the stem. So that angle cut at the bottom isn’t needed. Just an interesting tidbit I thought I’d pass along 😊. great video 👍 btw
Thanks for sharing!
Dirt perfect said to check you out, so we all followed his advise. Once we found you, your personality and your interesting interests, got hooked,, I didn’t mention funny,I love funny 👍👍👍👍

So nice of you, appreciate you watching!
Thanks for sharing. I am a hydrangea lover myself, i will try it.🌺🌺🌺
👍👍
I was impressed with your detailed explanations and the close up photo shots of what you are doing. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful, and I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Nice video 😄 I have a cutting from a gifted variety flower arrangement. I believe its the Incrediball variety and its beautiful! Can I propagate that if I remove the bloom? Its a long stem with a large bloom at the end. Ive been keeping it in a water in a flower vase 💐
sure just cut the bloom out
Hydrangeas are my most favorite. Thanks for showing how to propagate them. Mopheads are my least favorite because here in KY we get late freezes and it kills the buds for the year, often I have no flowers. But I love all the rest of them. Love the blue color of the mopheads too. Thanks.
Thank you for watching, they’re one of my favorite too!🙂
Mopheads do great in containers. They just need a slow release fertilizer to fulfill their nutrient requirements. This way, you can just drag the pot into your garage once it’s gone to sleep for the winter. Drag it back out in early spring. I do this for a lemon tree that’s not hardy in my area. Works great 👍 it’s going on its 6th year now
You made it look easy, I’ll try it!😊
You can do it!!
You are the best 👍
Thanks
Great idea
Thanks!
My very favorite flower. So beautiful. Thank you for another great video.
So nice of you, appreciate the comment!!😊
Thank you so much, this is a very detailed video with clear instructions. I hope to try it soon. Is there a follow up video showing the results?
I wish I did an update, but sorry i failed to do so!
What do you use to sterilize pruning and sizzles with
70% alcohol
Do you ever root hydrangea cuttings in water? If so, do you put them in shade or window to take root?
I have in the past, just give bright indirect light
How often do you water these cuttings? I’m in 5B zone and have hydrangeas I would like to do some cuttings from. This is a great idea using the milk jug!
Enough to keep the moist, but most importantly NOT wet
How are they doing now? Did you use soil that’s specifically acidic when you propagated? Or should you wait on adjusting pH levels until they have taken root?
I gave them away once rooted. Dont worry about soil ph while rooting. Adjust PH after planting, it’s really the aluminum amount in soil that changes the color of the blooms.
O QUE FAZER PARA PROPAGAR HORTENSIAS AZUIS, OBRIGADA
Pretty sure Hortensia is just and old name for hydrangea
awesome!!! i love Propagating.
Sorry I didn’t do the bougainvillea for you yet!
@@grassrootsgardening I’m right here waiting. We got time.
@@grassrootsgardening I stole a start of an arrowhead plant today at a restaurant.
@@dianelambert8281 dude!!!! Don’t tell everybody!!🤣🤣🤣
@@grassrootsgardening oh dang now I have done it lol. *sidenote. Our waitress helped.
Can I use a plastic container for propagation? If so, is it ok to put container in a storage building that does not get much light, or should I leave my make shift green house outside? Great video.
Sure you can use plastic, and they dont need much light but storage shed might be a little too dark.
Thank you, this was great! How long will you keep the cuttings in the plastic gallon before you plant the cuttings?
Depends on how quickly they were but probably two months or so
How long does it take to root? And how often do u water it?
About 6 weeks, and you want to keep it constantly moist, but not wet
I have learned HOW to propagate, but I don’t know what to do with the new plants over the winter! Do you have a video about what to do once you have roots? It is the end of September and I am in zone 6. Where should I put them to protect them until the spring? Thanks!
I’ll try to do an update video soon. You need to try and keep the young roots somewhat protected until next spring. Maybe in the garage since you are in zone 6?
Thank you for this video. I'm zone 4. What do you recommend for saving the new plants over the winter?
Since this particular hydrangea is only Hardy to zone 5, I think your only option would be to plant in a container and keep inside during winter. 🥶
❤
👍👍
Do we need to water them during this one month? Thank you!🎉🎉
Yes. Keep soil moist but not wet
Nbuitful
👍👍
