    • @Christodophilus
      @Christodophilus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wish I could say the same. My first year owning one and lost all it's leaves. Total bummer. It doesn't like, low light and being over watered. Even just a bit! Overall, I found pothos to be more forgiving than philodendrons. Maybe I will change my mind after owning them longer than a year. If I don't kill all my philodendrons, that is. The Rojo Congo, Brasil and Silver Sword, all dropped their leaves. I'm nursing them back to life, but it takes so long, compared to a pothos.

    • @justavideodiary
      @justavideodiary 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Christodophilus interesting. I don't live in a sunny place at all so my philo's are all in shade. They thrive! It's true, I try not to overwater them tho. Maybe it's the soil composition that they don't like?

      @Christodophilus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justavideodiary Thanks for sharing your experience, it gives me hope they are tougher. The soil composition was something I am considering experimenting with. I suspect, not enough aeration? I've bought a bag of perlite and when it's the growing season again, I'll try repotting.

    • @justavideodiary
      @justavideodiary 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Christodophilus I used perlite (about 35%), coco coir( 35%) and warm castings (30%) mix I made myself. This is what I'd use for most my plants tbh and they seem to love it. I'd also say the humidity is quite important. I personally don't wait for seasons when reporting my plants, esp if they struggle, just plop them into new homes so they can do their thing :)

    I love my "cheap" plants just as much as my more expensive plants. I bought a HUGE Philodendron Hope for $20 at my local grocery store. She has doubled in size in 3 months. She's a statement plant for sure and so easy going. My Tradescantia Zebrina was $16 and holy smokes, she has gotten HUGE. Easy care and a good grower. I'm looking at once of my dieffenbachia (I forget which variety) I bought for $6.

    Love this video. Enough of the "UNBOXING RARE AROIDS!!!" clickbait consumerism. Loving plants isnt about having the latest and rarest, it's about nurturing and enjoying whichever plants you have. I'm not saying that it isnt great to expand your collection and get whatever it is that brings you joy, but you arent any less of a plant parent if you got all your plants at walmart than if you ordered all the unique and most expensive plants you could find from NSE tropicals...

      Yes! I have a wishlist of specific plants I want, are beautiful to me, and that I know I am capable of keeping alive in my current living situation. I have to keep plants that either thrive in low light or do well under grow lights, that aren't too finicky, and some that I can overwinter through dormancy and put outside in warmer weather. Most easy, beginner plants are suitable for this, and I'm starting to build a small collection but it's all plants I love and bring me happiness.

    YAS!!! I have a crappy, part time job at Pizza hut and at first I thought I could never afford a large plant collection. I started growing my collection in march (start of co-vid madness) and currently I'm at 67. The most I've spent on a single plant is $18 (got a caladium from a local nursery). I wish there were more nurseries in Southern Illinois, where I'm at, but Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe's usually always have a nice, affordable variety. 🙂 I've yet to purchase any online because I'm leery of online purchases and even more leery of purchasing live plants.

      You can totally find cool things for $20 or way less at big box stores. Where I live those types of stores buy overfill plants from local greenhouses and nurseries, so if there is a big box store on your normal route and you pop in often you can totally build your collection on a budget. Ruby cascade has been seen where I live at Home Depot as well as lemon lime prayer plants, Hoya Hindu rope etc. for usually like $12! I just got a monstera adansonii with 12+ leaves already growing up a pole for $7.99 last week. It’s like a treasure hunt with these big box stores lol but I love it. You never know what you might find and it’s awesome when the price is something I can justify. 🙈

    I have never paid more than £34.99 for any of the plants in my collection. I feel that big plants can be such an investment, but often times you can get younger smaller versions for pretty decent prices!
    Schefflera arbicola
    Dracaena Fragrans
    Boston fern
    Calathea Orbifolia
    Peace lily
    Tradescantia zebrina
    Pilea glauca
    They're all ones I've found cheaply that weren't already on your list! I agree with and have a lot of the ones you mentioned in your collection. My favourites being Jade plant, Hoya krimson princess and monstera!

    Snake plants are another super easy "beginner" plant you can find cheap. I also got lucky and found a rooted, potted cutting of a Monstera adansonii for like $11 on Mercari. I also got a small bare root but well established Raven ZZ for $23 on the same app and I potted it immediately and it's absolutely gorgeous! So sometimes if you do a bit of hunting around you can find some good deals on some more uncommon varieties too.

    There are lots of other pileas (pilea cadierei, spruceana, & involucrata) are pretty easy to come by, easy to care for and not expensive.
    Peperomia caperatas are usually very affordable & super easy to propagate, so great if you want to gift or trade with other plant people. My peperomia pixie lime was three bucks & is apparently impossible to kill.
    My iresine herbstii (chicken gizzard plant) was also three dollars at a big box store - the bright red color really pops against all my green plants.
    If you really want some greenery, and the budge is nearing zero, sprouted carrot tops make pretty decent indoor plants as well.

    I have the classic Golden pothos, Jade pothos, Satin pothos (otherwise known as Scindapsus pictus exotica) Snow Queen pothos and lastly, the Goldilocks pothos, which has similar colour to lemon-lime philodendron. The reason I keep getting new varieties, is they can handle the swings between hot dry conditions, and moist overcast, in the different seasons. They're just relentless. So if you get no other plant in your house, make it a pothos.

    Oh those hormones will settle down, but you might still be a marshmallow in the presence of baby animals. The pilea peperomiodes is a plant that I've wanted for decades. I never saw one, live, until this year. I bought two of them. Yesterday, a heartleaf came to live here. They're not really in stores in my area; this one was found 30 minutes away. I also scored a Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma and a Marble Queen pothos. Total bill was just around $16 USD. The MQ was $10 and the others $3 each. Don't be afraid to ask if the store or nursery will discount the price. That heartleaf is perfect and it came in a gorgeous cachepot. It's the end of the season and there was no price tag or any other comparable plant, so they let it go for a nice price. I'm really glad that so many Plant Tubers are getting on board with the affordable plants. I hate to see new growers being driven away from the hobby because the prices are ridiculous. As far as the rare plant craze, be patient. In a few months, all these trend setters will have moved on to the next thing and they'll be giving away plants they no longer want.
