Pretty, funny how a team of basic construction vehicles ended up being one of the most iconic Decepticon teams of all times, and definitely my No. 1 Decepticon Combiner squad (the Combaticons coming a very close second after them in my book). :)
if i had to guess it's their "Basic construction Vehicle' form that actually made them so popular... I imagine more than one exasperated mother saw the to Dump Truck, then saw the Giant Metal Tonka Dump truck two shelves over and went with the smaller (cheaper?) one... only to realize once she got it home that he had 5 friends Little Billy would demand to complete the set... - being the first combiner no doubt added to the cool factor as a kid, but the want/need for the whole set, whether they actually got it or not, no doubt affects the nostalgia/love of the toys - as a kid I got the 'core' of the Protectabots and the Seacons at assorted Holidays and always Wanted either/both complete sets... Luckily (in Hind sight) my parents did NOT oblige as an adult 'collector' I now recognize how much a Modern Combiner Set costs (I have 4), i couldn't imagine what the old (weaker) toys would have set back 80's parents for my part I always saw Transformers toys as 3 toys in one... It's a Character... I'm sure more than a few imaginations kicked in and saw He-Man and Optimus team up (or fight) It's a Vehicle... Race car, tank, Back Hoe, if you never transform the toy it still functions along side your Hot Wheels (even if out of scale) It's a Puzzle... the act of switching modes is it's own 'play style' even if you've done so a Million times (of my above cited collection, about every 3 months or so I 'rotate' their forms... so I have two in Combined form in a 'battle pose'... one team in robot mode supporting their ally and the 4th team in Vehicle mode coming to Join the battle
We're still sad at the fact that no combiner team appeared in Transformers Prime... the Aligned combieners were mostly trash from RID 2015, the only good one was Fall of Cybertron's Bruticus...

As always, such a great video. When I was a kid back in Argentina, the toys were super rare to find. I got a Hook for my 6th birthday, so he became a favorite, although Mixmaster always seemed the coolest.
There have also been Autobot construction vehicles too, the first being truck crane Grapple, Hauler who was mentioned here, the Targetmasters Quickmix, Scoop (mentioned here too), and Landfill, and the Build Team from 2001's Robots in Disguise consisting of truck crane Hightower, dump truck Heavy Load, bulldozer Wedge and excavator Grimlock, who combined into another Landfill, with 3 different limb configurations.
When I was watching the cartoon, whenever Devastator showed up, that’s when I knew shit was about to get real. When you’re a kid, 6 bad guy robots merging into one big gigantic Kaiju like robot is just the coolest thing ever.
You can tell they didn't care about prowl when the lamest construction kills you at least brawn, ratchet, and Ironside was killed by starscream and megatron
I love how Devestator is usually depicted as being Godzilla sized and towering over buildings. They must have some pretty big vehicles as their alt-modes
I can just imagine old Bucket-head giving Devastator/the constructicons the 'Really, bro?' look every time something breaks in the base, followed swiftly by a chorus of "He did it" pointing at each other and Starscream. My favorite was a tie between Gen 1 and Animated, for the complete departure from the norm it gave the audience.
Phew! After this last week with all this near hysteria it’s great to watch a truly fun and great video. Thank you Chris X ♥️ I’ve always loved the Constructicons and was always happy that they were in all the series of the original animated series. Even their limited showings in the comics - like Transformers UK’s Demolition Derby they were great. I adore their bright green and purple colours.
When the Tonkanator Recolor of Devastator released a few years ago, I always liked to think that this was the constructions mimicking what the autobots did in that one episode where they pretended to be the stunticons. Pretending to be autobots so they could infiltrate their base like they did in the cartoon.
I don’t know why, but I’ve always been a big fan of Scrapper specifically. I think it’s some combination of his raspy voice, cool design, and the glimpse of a deeper personality we get from toy bios. After years of saving and waiting for the right time, I finally was able to buy a Devastator today. I have to say, I’m most excited to finally have a Scrapper for my collection, possibly even more than I’m excited to have Devastator himself.
RW:@9:30 “escalated to a terrifyingly new level”is right on many levels Chris and that goes with Road Master and his combined team to form Menasor aswell in TRANSFORMERS DEVASTATION.
When I first became a eBay member in 1999, trying to complete my devastator set was one of my first goals. I finally acquired the 6th and final figure, Hook, and I was blown away and how cool this combiner is. Sort of fragile to keep them intact, but it looks amazing when displayed.
I love the Constructicons! The G1 Constructicons are my favorite! But I love the Movieverse Constructicons as welll, especially with that destructive Vortex Grinder!
Devastator was my favorite combiner - but as a kid it hurt my heart to see him get his ass kicked by Bruticus and I think he got beat up by Menasor also. I remember - I wanted my parents to buy all the constructicons - but they could not afford them - $40 was a lot of money to spend on toys back in the 80s. lol
We need more series like G1 and Animated; where the people of Earth know about Transformers, and thus, they can duke it out in broad daylight surrounded by people. This means that combiners would be more likely to appear
When I started playing with Transformers toys as a kid, Scrapper was my first ever Decepticon figure. Now, as an adult G1 TF collector he still is my favorite Constructicon.
I really wish they would pick up Overload as a constructicon and use him in other series. It sucks that he had no character or a robot mode in the movies, though.
Actually, there was a Dirt Boss forklift toy, but he was in the movie toyline and was not in Animated style. ☹️ The figure was still pretty cool, though. (It was also recolored later and rereleased as Deadlift.) 😊
I like to give combiners rivals like auto bot decepticons Devastor-raiden cause they were the first combiners Menasor-superion cause land and sky being opposites Bruticus-defensor cause combat is the opposite of assistance Predaking-volcanucus cause new creatures vs old Abominus-computron cause brawn and brain Piranhacon-Victorion cause well 6v6 (I had no other reason) Leokizar- skyrain. both control the sky
Fun side fact - Gravedigger gets his name from media mistakes. It was a prototype name for Scrapper, likely discarded because of Gravedigger the monster truck also being a thing. But off-shoot media, most notably a Choose Your Own Adventure style book, used the name as an extra member because this was a time where other media outlets didn't always communicate directly with the original source owners. Those misprints were later canonized with Gravedigger as a younger member of the team who was left out of Devestator because he's even more unruly and tantrum prone than Bonecrusher, and eventually got his team of drone limbs to combine with out of spite with the Power Core Combiner tech. Hauler was said to have been a member of the team that left over differences before they were turned evil. He has an artistic flare and often changes his paint job, which was how they explained his toy (an exclusive repaint of Grapple) was Constructicon colors, while the cameo he gets his name from in the cartoon was colored like a Diaclone toy (duller colors than Grapple would later use)
I always enjoy how thorough and informative these videos are. I'm curious though why in this one in particular there's no mention of last year's Walmart exclusive re-release of the original G1 Constructicons.
Ok, so last night i was thinking, and here's my personal head canon that links up most of the controversy; The year, unonown, the place, Cybertron. The transformers were invested in their jobs, and unlike the civilized people of Iacon, those in Kaon were built to fight. The gladiatorial pits were in need of new battlers, as the current once were becoming dated and weak. The constructicons, though they wont be called this yet, are tasked with foxing the problem. At first, Scrapper doesnt know what to do. Mixmaster chimes in with "why not build a pit fighter?" He doesnt expect Scrapper to take him seriously, but he does, and so they construct megatron, not yet knowing what he'd become. Years pass, and the constructicons build crystal city in that time frame. Megatron slowly becomes a tyrant, and tries to take power of his creators in an effort to keep them from giving him orders. Megatron is hated and feared by many, and the poor constructicons get blamed for his atrocities, though they want nothing to do with it. Megatron, failing to acquire their service, decides to force them into submission with the robo-smasher. He then tasks them to attack crystal city to prove his own dominance, giving them the ability to combine in order to do so. They attack Omega Supreme, and he wins. Devestator is left in ruins, and megatron sees fit to abandon the entire project. Omega hides the remains on a little known planet that no one cares about, for risk that megatron may change his mind about the salvage. Gast forward a couple billion years, the autobots and decepticons awake on earth. A few years into their disputes, laserbeak discovers the remains of Devastator. He reports this back to Soundwave, who reports it to Megatron. He deems it reasonable to rebuild him, as Devastator could be the tactical advantage he needs to defeat optimus prime. And so it is done. Devastator is rebuilt. This leads us into the rest of the show. And there yall go.
Similar to constricticons there were Autobots Build Team from "2001 Robots in Disguise". The team consists from Wedge aka Build Boy (orange bulldozer), Grimlock aka Build Hurricane (green power shovel), Hightower aka Build Cyclone (red crane), Heavy Load (yellow dump truck). They resemble or hommage Constructicon team: Bonecrusher, Scavenger, Hook, Long Haul.

You should see what the urban dictionary says about
“Your face is a construction site!”
I have always loved the way you pronounce “diaclone” and “bob budiansky” for some reason
Bob
Fun fact: I once read in Nick Magazine (that was a thing that existed) that RotF Devastator was so hard to animate, that a computer got fried in the process!
Here are some of my ideas on what I think some good alternate modes and unique robot modes could be for the Constructicons. I will also say what parts they will become when forming Devastator.
Mixmaster: Mack Granite Cement Mixer Truck with a robot mode based on both his animated and movie counterparts. (forms neck and upper back)
Long Haul: Hitachi DH321 Mining Dump Truck with a robot mode based on his movie counterpart. (forms lower torso)
Hook: Qy16 16 ton Crane Truck with a robot mode based on his Generation One counterpart. (forms upper torso)
Scrapper: John Deere 200D Lc thumbed Excavator with a robot based on his Animated counterpart. (forms left arm)
Scavenger: Komatsu D1575a bulldozer with a robot mode based on his Armada counterpart. (forms left leg)
Bonecrusher: Volvo A40g Articulated Grapple Dump Truck with a robot mode based on his movie counterpart. (forms right leg)
Buckethead: Caterpillar CAT 966C with a robot mode based on her G1 counterpart as well as the body shape of Scrapper from the movies. (forms right arm)
Dirt Boss: Toyota Diesel Forklift with a robot mode based on his animated and movie counterparts. (forms head)
Once he’s ran out of g1 characters, I’ll eventually get to see the basics on sideways
Congratulations, kid. You made it.
- being the first combiner no doubt added to the cool factor as a kid, but the want/need for the whole set, whether they actually got it or not, no doubt affects the nostalgia/love of the toys
- as a kid I got the 'core' of the Protectabots and the Seacons at assorted Holidays and always Wanted either/both complete sets... Luckily (in Hind sight) my parents did NOT oblige as an adult 'collector' I now recognize how much a Modern Combiner Set costs (I have 4), i couldn't imagine what the old (weaker) toys would have set back 80's parents
for my part I always saw Transformers toys as 3 toys in one...
It's a Character... I'm sure more than a few imaginations kicked in and saw He-Man and Optimus team up (or fight)
It's a Vehicle... Race car, tank, Back Hoe, if you never transform the toy it still functions along side your Hot Wheels (even if out of scale)
It's a Puzzle... the act of switching modes is it's own 'play style' even if you've done so a Million times (of my above cited collection, about every 3 months or so I 'rotate' their forms... so I have two in Combined form in a 'battle pose'... one team in robot mode supporting their ally and the 4th team in Vehicle mode coming to Join the battle
Extra long Basics video is a perfect gift for my birthday.
I’m reading the IDW run and I am loving the construticons in it at the moment
We're still sad at the fact that no combiner team appeared in Transformers Prime... the Aligned combieners were mostly trash from RID 2015, the only good one was Fall of Cybertron's Bruticus...
They actually had art for brutictus in rid even though they said they never intended to put him in.
@@greendecepticon6148 good thing they didn't ruin them...
@@thesymbiotenation.4552 one thing I didn't like about rid is that it is implied that half of villains arnt even true decepticons but random bad guys the decepticon symbol slapped on them.
@@greendecepticon6148 yeah, we mean, they could have brought back cons from either Prime or the Cybertron games, like Barricade, The Combaticons, Shockwave, or even bring back both Arcee and Airachnid for a final battle between them!
@@thesymbiotenation.4552 They seem to have avoided previous aligned characters that weren't in prime on purpose from some reason.
As always, such a great video. When I was a kid back in Argentina, the toys were super rare to find. I got a Hook for my 6th birthday, so he became a favorite, although Mixmaster always seemed the coolest.
Could you do a basics video on the Stunticons next?
Ah The Constructicons My Personal Favorite out of All Combiners
Another good one Chris! Excellent! Unlike some of my other warriors you never fail me!
?
Megatron. Why do you call on the constructicons?
1:20 Well Scavenger proved his worth when he killed Prowl in Transformers: The Movie.
💪🏿💪🏿
You can tell they didn't care about prowl when the lamest construction kills you at least brawn, ratchet, and Ironside was killed by starscream and megatron
@@chrisedwards3214 Well it was a lucky shot as you can tell by the scene, but nonetheless it counts as a kill.
“Constructicons, merge for the kill.”
Of devastator?
I love how Devestator is usually depicted as being Godzilla sized and towering over buildings. They must have some pretty big vehicles as their alt-modes
well, they are construction vehicles, which are usually known for being large compared to regular cars
It works the same way Megatron transforms into a gun and sound wave into a cassette player, mass-shifting
My favorite Transformers ever! Thanks for your vídeos!
Scrapper: What the slag is that?
Bulkhead: If I had to guess: A forklift, a headmaster unit, an Allspark fragment and a whole lotta trouble.
Phew! After this last week with all this near hysteria it’s great to watch a truly fun and great video. Thank you Chris X ♥️
I’ve always loved the Constructicons and was always happy that they were in all the series of the original animated series. Even their limited showings in the comics - like Transformers UK’s Demolition Derby they were great. I adore their bright green and purple colours.
You forgot the best part: the micro versions of themselves held Auditions to join the Constructicons
Source pls :)

Keep making these videos every Saturday I wake up and Immediately watch the basics
This has made me now want to go out and buy all the comics. My wallet says thank you.
Chris: Devastator is the Decepticon's greatest force of destruction.
Bruticus: am I a joke to you?
9:23 aot reference and Godzilla reference
RW:@9:30 “escalated to a terrifyingly new level”is right on many levels Chris and that goes with Road Master and his combined team to form Menasor aswell in TRANSFORMERS DEVASTATION.
I think it would be neat if you did a combiner month. Showcasing the rescue bots, aerial bots, stuntacons and terrorcons
When I first became a eBay member in 1999, trying to complete my devastator set was one of my first goals. I finally acquired the 6th and final figure, Hook, and I was blown away and how cool this combiner is. Sort of fragile to keep them intact, but it looks amazing when displayed.
Its pretty nice to see a team like the constructions to be treated well
Favourite basics in awhile would love to see some on some more combiner teams in the future
I love the Constructicons! The G1 Constructicons are my favorite!
But I love the Movieverse Constructicons as welll, especially with that destructive Vortex Grinder!
Devastator: nothing can defeat the devastor!
Bruticus: allow me to introduce myself
Devastator was my favorite combiner - but as a kid it hurt my heart to see him get his ass kicked by Bruticus and I think he got beat up by Menasor also. I remember - I wanted my parents to buy all the constructicons - but they could not afford them - $40 was a lot of money to spend on toys back in the 80s. lol
Dude I watch these like Saturday morning cartoons
We need more series like G1 and Animated; where the people of Earth know about Transformers, and thus, they can duke it out in broad daylight surrounded by people. This means that combiners would be more likely to appear
3:04 Devisater destroys The Twin Towers
When I started playing with Transformers toys as a kid, Scrapper was my first ever Decepticon figure. Now, as an adult G1 TF collector he still is my favorite Constructicon.
you know you're a charmer when you manage to combine with your enemies and they liked it so much they'ed switch sides just to be with you
Finally! My favorite Combiner team! Great video my man!
Devastator is my fav combiner. and i'm a big fan of the contructicons themselves.
This channel reinvigorated my love on transformers. I recently bought 3 of the siege war for cybertrons figured. Starscream shockwave and jetfire
I must say. Was not disappointed by any of the 3. Shockwave one was kinda weird in how the cable fit in certain spots. The peg was slightly to tight
Overload from the movie Constructicons is my favourite design-wise.
I really wish they would pick up Overload as a constructicon and use him in other series. It sucks that he had no character or a robot mode in the movies, though.
2:49 “nothing defeats the devastator nothing!” Accept for a railgun blast to the chest. Lol
Actually, there was a Dirt Boss forklift toy, but he was in the movie toyline and was not in Animated style. ☹️ The figure was still pretty cool, though. (It was also recolored later and rereleased as Deadlift.) 😊
I like to give combiners rivals like auto bot decepticons
Devastor-raiden cause they were the first combiners
Menasor-superion cause land and sky being opposites
Bruticus-defensor cause combat is the opposite of assistance
Predaking-volcanucus cause new creatures vs old
Abominus-computron cause brawn and brain
Piranhacon-Victorion cause well 6v6 (I had no other reason)
Leokizar- skyrain. both control the sky
Huh...
I always thought hook was the leader
Maybe because he transformed to the head
Well it's good to know
YAS FINALLY!! I get to see the constructicons and I’ve been waiting for this video
Remove, remove, always remove! I didn't join this outfit to be a dump truck!
He has an artistic flare and often changes his paint job, which was how they explained his toy (an exclusive repaint of Grapple) was Constructicon colors, while the cameo he gets his name from in the cartoon was colored like a Diaclone toy (duller colors than Grapple would later use)
i Am dirEctlY BelOw... tHe EnEmy'S sCroTuM
I love the fact Devastator sounds like there’s actually 6 voices talking at once.
My favorite version of the Constructicons are the ones seen in Revenge Of The Fallen.
3:05 I can’t believe Devastator would do this :’(.
Great Stuff! Classy and classic as always!
Out here putting respect on Devastator name. Love it.
This channel is so underrated
My favorite combiner team, Thanks so much Chris!! XD
I always enjoy how thorough and informative these videos are. I'm curious though why in this one in particular there's no mention of last year's Walmart exclusive re-release of the original G1 Constructicons.
I find it interesting that the team of Transformers that are made for construction are ironically Decepticons.
Ok, so last night i was thinking, and here's my personal head canon that links up most of the controversy;
The year, unonown, the place, Cybertron.
A great video, I would love to see a review on the trainbots
Similar to constricticons there were Autobots Build Team from "2001 Robots in Disguise". The team consists from Wedge aka Build Boy (orange bulldozer), Grimlock aka Build Hurricane (green power shovel), Hightower aka Build Cyclone (red crane), Heavy Load (yellow dump truck). They resemble or hommage Constructicon team: Bonecrusher, Scavenger, Hook, Long Haul.
Devastator is quite special since the team leader doesn’t form the torso (or even the upper one).
I think the animated constructicon toys haven’t been released since they were planned on having the combiner ability for the figures in the 4th season.
I still have my Devastator set of 1985, I made some upgrades with the Crazydevy parts so it´s one of my more important figures
Fantastic story! I liked the animated cartoons version!👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩
