Awesome video, Chris! Really high quality stuff. I am looking forward to your videos every week. I am not a great fan of combiners in general, but if I'd have to pick one, it would be IDW's Devastator with Prowl as it's head. Speaking of Prowl; hopefully we'll have a Basics on Prowl one day... and a million other characters. Love your Basics videos so much!
I couldn't agree more, Mathia! IDW's comics are my favorite incarnation of the Transformers, besides Prime. IDW Devastator with Prowl is also my favorite combiner! And I am dying for a basics episode on Prowl (or Jazz)!
tbb033 Have you actually read MTMTE or RID? How can you call them garbage? I respect your opinion of course but that implies you respect mine, or Mathia's. It is proof of your immaturity and lack of respect for another's opinion that leads me to make the above inquiry and to question my position regarding my own respect for you. You cannot state that "IDW is garbage and shit" without becoming a troll. "CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE BECOME A TROLL!" -I am channeling my inner Prowl here, BTW.-
Abominus. Even though the Terrorcons technically hasn't made any appearances lately, his cool design and ferocious appearance is the reason why I like him.
I'd have to say Menasor (G1) is my favorite combiner. I mean, the first episode they appeared in showed them chopping trees in half while driving, flying off cliffs, and in that one episode where Wildrider crashes into a wall and knocks off Bluestreak, he drives off fine, but with the combined mode of the Stunticons, if their armor in vehicle mode can withstand that much in vehicle mode, he's one tough combiner!
Not many know this, but the limbs of the said "Scramble City" combiners can actually combine with G1 Metroplex, connecting to his shoulders and knees, hence the name Scramble City.
0:48 "Oiler's dead" "I am sad that Oiler is dead" "Did you know Oiler is dead?" "WHY ARE YOU NOT SAD THAT OILER IS DEAD!!?" AKA: More or less; the entirety of Slide's dialogue in IDW's Optimus Prime comic series
My favorite would be Piranacon by the Seacons. It's the first combiner I got to read about in the few comics I had back in the day. Some story involving them and I think Shockwave and Galvatron.
I can never forgive the Bay films for taking a fan favorite in Devastator and turning him into a scrotum joke. A joke that doesn't even make sense when you think about it. There is no piece of construction or demolition equipment that has 2 wrecking balls.
Thanks for mentioning the Scramble City Combiners ability to swap. I don't think they every brought this up in the U.S. when the toy line was first introduced.
The only G1 transformers figure I ever owned was First Aid. I didn't know much about transformers at the time, but as I grew older I discovered he was part of a team called the Protectobots. And so my love for Defensor was born. I have just got the last part of Defensor on Ebay, the elusive and hard to find Blades.
My favorite combiner? The Predacon(not those ones.) combiner Predaking! They unite fully being one of the few combiners to act normally, as the Predacons are unified by their love of the hunt. Also he has a lion on his chest and bird wings. Hard to get cooler than that.
My favorite Combiner is Computron, for no other reason than it coincided with my favorite Grimlock story. (Always been a sucker for a good Flowers for Algernon plot) Now I’m real excited to see a proper Dinobot Combiner team. One that isn’t The Beast, no less.
Thanks for this video. I enjoyed it . I think my favorite autobot is the technobots, and favorite decepticons are the stunticons. I loved that episode when Optimus and team looked like them to infiltrate and throw off megatron plans for the day. Haha , I’m gonna go watch that right now actually . Thanks again.
Excellent video series. I'd be curious for an explanation as to how the movie Constructicons work. I remember all of the individual Bots being sold separately, even under different names, and then their vehicle forms part of Devastator, but with no robot transformation ..it was all so peculiar.
I've always been a Bruticus fan, which initially started with Ruination in RiD. That toy and the FoC Bruticus are the only combiner toys I've been able to get so far.
My favorite combiner is Devastator for many different reasons but the most significant is his portrayal with Prowl in the IDW comics. I was blown away by the art and the characterization. Having said that here are my ideas for future 'the basics' episodes. - Jazz - Prowl - Ironhide - Knockout - Ratchet - Wheeljack - Rodimus/Hot Rod - the Wreckers - Optimus - Primus - Unicron - The symbiont/carrier relationship - Sideswipe and Sunstreaker - Jetfire/Skyfire - Megatron - The Decepticon Justice Division - Starscream - Seekers (all fliers) - The human characters - Minicons - Mass displacement - Transformers Live Action Movies (Bayverse, I bet it would be fun to make!) - The G1 marvel comics - The Japanese side of the fandom - The fannon - Thundercracker - Scourge -Galvatron - Astrotrain - Sixshot - Triple changers - Cybertron - Alt. modes/ Transformation Cogs (T-cogs) - Female transformers (Arcee, Elita-One, Chromia, Nautica, Windblade etc.) - Animated - The unicron trilogy - The aligned continuity - Autobots - Decepticons - [...] Primus! I'm sorry about the length of this list! But it's just I love this series so much, Transformers is a huge part of my life and... I just love watching you, Chris, do it justice. I'm looking forward to the next episode!
2:06 I used to see this "original constructicon" set in cheap toy shops in the UK and used to think it was an unlicensed rip off of the G1 constructicons. I can see now that if anything, the opposite is true. What was the name of the set? I'm trying to look up the product on Google images to jog my memory and rekindle some old childhood emotions (not necessarily good ones, but accurate ones!).
I'd guess it was probably a knock-off simply done in the colours of the original Diaclone figures, rather than anything genuine! Like this: www.tfmatrix.com/2011/07/08/my-ko-constructicons/
I do like the idea of the combination having to be mentally uniform to function efficiently/effectively or it could be hindered or come undone and personal I like the approach of one controlling consciousness as oppose to the individual components having to work in consort with each other
Defensor is my favorite. I'm partial to Decepticon, as a whole, but I think I can confidently say that Defensor is, objectively, the most underrated combiner.
This is a great video in a great series, thanks Chris! With Machinima's series still building, have you thought about doing a 'Basics' on what they're calling 'Titans?' And I've wondered, where does Omega Supreme fall in these classes?
Even though Predaking is seemingly the most powerful Superion with the Enigma is actually the most powerful combiner and he is my favorite thank you Chris great vid
@@ChrisMcFeely no I’m talking about the one that appears from like a second. It’s like the one with the plane, the boat, the two trucks and the spaceship.

Something I would like to know more about is one of the few Transformer units that as far as I know, never got a Combiner form despite being all the way back in G1 (like the Dinobots) - the INSECTICONS. The team from G1 is the one most recognise, but then there's all the different bots as part of the Insecticon subspecies (also like the Dinobots), so there's a lot to cover. The Insecticons were pretty much the Decepticons answer to the Dinobots, so it makes sense that they shared a lot of qualities - though the smaller size of the Insecticons meant a mass-produced version of them was involved in one or more Eras of the show. You may want to include some other things that, while not technically Insecticons, are similar enough to be talked about, like the Scraplets - and don't forget to mention that Starscream was for a very brief time an Insecticon, when the ghost of his Spark possessed the body of Waspinator during the Beast Wars! (Starscream and his transcendental spark could be a video of it's own, too!)
1:05 i really love how you explain it with these cybertronian clips. At first i dint know what you mean but until the bay one popped up. Now i know what you mean

I couldn't agree more, Mathia! IDW's comics are my favorite incarnation of the Transformers, besides Prime. IDW Devastator with Prowl is also my favorite combiner! And I am dying for a basics episode on Prowl (or Jazz)!
tbb033
Have you actually read MTMTE or RID? How can you call them garbage?
I respect your opinion of course but that implies you respect mine, or Mathia's. It is proof of your immaturity and lack of respect for another's opinion that leads me to make the above inquiry and to question my position regarding my own respect for you. You cannot state that "IDW is garbage and shit" without becoming a troll.
"CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE BECOME A TROLL!"
-I am channeling my inner Prowl here, BTW.-
Prime!
Look out!
*COMBINERS!*
WonderCreek Jazz
Lookout there’s
Combiners!
Uhhh
Uhhh
*Combiners*
Oh no. Jazz
Look out for the titans
Ah, Prime...
Look out for the Titans...
UHH UHH
*T I T A N S*

Superion (Aerielbots) vs Menasor (Stunticons)
Defensor (Protectorbots) vs Menasor (Combaticons)
Computron (Technobots) vs Abominus (Terrorcons)
Dinobot vs Devastitor (Constructicon)
Predaking (Predacons)
My personal favorite would have to be raiden but landfill may just be a close second.
4:20 *_HOLY SHIT I'MA COMBINER TRANSFORMER!_*
Not many know this, but the limbs of the said "Scramble City" combiners can actually combine with G1 Metroplex, connecting to his shoulders and knees, hence the name Scramble City.
THEY GONNA BUILD AN ARMY OF COMBINERS!
As a kid I used to go Bruticus ,, and smash stuff ,, as a 46 year old i still do it... Yet I still love Devastator
Wait a sec. If Nexus Prime was a combiner and one of the thirteen Primes, does that technically mean that there were seventeen Primes?
0:48 "Oiler's dead"
"I am sad that Oiler is dead"
"Did you know Oiler is dead?"
"WHY ARE YOU NOT SAD THAT OILER IS DEAD!!?"
AKA: More or less; the entirety of Slide's dialogue in IDW's Optimus Prime comic series
My favorite combiner is bruticus and movie devastator has some of the coolest movie decepticon designs
My favorite would be Piranacon by the Seacons. It's the first combiner I got to read about in the few comics I had back in the day. Some story involving them and I think Shockwave and Galvatron.
Brilliant series. How about an episode on The Wreckers?
HELL YEAH!
I can never forgive the Bay films for taking a fan favorite in Devastator and turning him into a scrotum joke. A joke that doesn't even make sense when you think about it. There is no piece of construction or demolition equipment that has 2 wrecking balls.
Those aren't wrecking balls they're ballast weights
To be frank, I don't remember watching the entirety of G1 so I can't say I have a nostalgia fuelled favorite, but I really like Abominus.
well this clears up a lot that i was confused about with RiD season 4 combiner force, i watched it as a kid so there was a fair bit i forgot about.
The Basics on Energon Ironhide. Yes that sounds about right.
Seth Tan sounds like a good idea
Seth Tan KICKER
Seth Tan
Osi
Seth Tan oh,god,no
The beast
Oh god
Thanks for mentioning the Scramble City Combiners ability to swap. I don't think they every brought this up in the U.S. when the toy line was first introduced.
A burger and a turkey sandwich should combine to form Burgerturk.
I’m surprised defensive is outclassed so often
He’s often used as “deus ex machina” the robot
I've always loved Predaking since reading the Dreamwave comics, something about him being one of the only truly unified combiners.
My favorite combiner?
OVERCOMPENSATRON!
aka nexus
This Power or Ability of the Cybertronians was Created by Nexus Prime. He Had the Power to Combine with Anything
Masterpiece Devastator and Bruticus pls XD
My favorite combiner? The Predacon(not those ones.) combiner Predaking!
They unite fully being one of the few combiners to act normally, as the Predacons are unified by their love of the hunt. Also he has a lion on his chest and bird wings. Hard to get cooler than that.
Well my favorite combiner is DragonStorm and maybe you could do a video on the guardian knights at some time
Considering they got so little screentime and actual lore in The Last Knight, a The Basics video would be difficult to make
Shortest basics video ever- "Welcome to the Basics of the Guardian Knights... oh just go watch The Last Knight. And there's the basics on those guys"
How the hell can Dragonstorm be your favorite combiner??? He lasted all of 20 seconds and has no personality whatsoever.
a dragon combination of twelve knights that was inspired by arthurian legend? how is that not awesome XD
Mine is Infernocus.
My favorite Combiner is Computron, for no other reason than it coincided with my favorite Grimlock story. (Always been a sucker for a good Flowers for Algernon plot)
Now I’m real excited to see a proper Dinobot Combiner team. One that isn’t The Beast, no less.
Computron, Menasor, and Predaking the goats
Devastator is everything I think of when I think of when I think of ‘combiner’. Awesome video Chris!
I think that this video is very good researched
Thanks for this video. I enjoyed it . I think my favorite autobot is the technobots, and favorite decepticons are the stunticons. I loved that episode when Optimus and team looked like them to infiltrate and throw off megatron plans for the day. Haha , I’m gonna go watch that right now actually . Thanks again.
7:08 DULL SURPRISE!
I was looking for this comment. :D
Excellent video series. I'd be curious for an explanation as to how the movie Constructicons work. I remember all of the individual Bots being sold separately, even under different names, and then their vehicle forms part of Devastator, but with no robot transformation ..it was all so peculiar.
Victorion is my fav.
DanTheWildBirdMan me too
Same here
I've always been a Bruticus fan, which initially started with Ruination in RiD. That toy and the FoC Bruticus are the only combiner toys I've been able to get so far.
Bruticus angry! Bruticus SMASH like button!
My favorite combiner is Devastator for many different reasons but the most significant is his portrayal with Prowl in the IDW comics. I was blown away by the art and the characterization. Having said that here are my ideas for future 'the basics' episodes.

Primus! I'm sorry about the length of this list! But it's just I love this series so much, Transformers is a huge part of my life and... I just love watching you, Chris, do it justice. I'm looking forward to the next episode!
Can you do the basics of the character Star Saber.
He is my favorite character
2:06 I used to see this "original constructicon" set in cheap toy shops in the UK and used to think it was an unlicensed rip off of the G1 constructicons. I can see now that if anything, the opposite is true. What was the name of the set? I'm trying to look up the product on Google images to jog my memory and rekindle some old childhood emotions (not necessarily good ones, but accurate ones!).
This I guess: www.deviantart.com/air-hammer/art/Construction-Robo-Digibash-538468245
I'd guess it was probably a knock-off simply done in the colours of the original Diaclone figures, rather than anything genuine! Like this: www.tfmatrix.com/2011/07/08/my-ko-constructicons/
Optimus: Uh Jazz look out. There's combiners
Jazz: Oh no Optimus look out there's combiners
Both: Ahhhhh
Optimus: Combiners
Another great vid! I can't be the only one who'd like to see a Basics on The Rise and Fall of Dreamwave... could I?
The basics on minicons?
I would combine the subject with Micromasters just to get the Micro play pattern done in one shot as well.
+darthirian Heh, *Combine* the subject
I do like the idea of the combination having to be mentally uniform to function efficiently/effectively or it could be hindered or come undone and personal I like the approach of one controlling consciousness as oppose to the individual components having to work in consort with each other
You missed "the beast"
Hey Vsauce Michael here That is the stuff of non-canonical fanwankery, that is truly better off left forgotten.
Even if it was canon I'd still recommend forgetting about it.
That's because it should never be mention.
_no._
I think you'll be very happy with this week's upcoming episode! ;)
Even though Predaking is seemingly the most powerful Superion with the Enigma is actually the most powerful combiner and he is my favorite thank you Chris great vid
4:28 does anyone know what combiner this is because I originally had a figure of him
The trains? That's Sixliner, from "Return of Convoy." Check out "The Basics on the Trainbots" for more on him!
@@ChrisMcFeely no I’m talking about the one that appears from like a second. It’s like the one with the plane, the boat, the two trucks and the spaceship.
@@ChrisMcFeely4:26 he only appears for a bit, but I’m talking about this dude
@@ChrisMcFeely if I can find the figures because I’ve lost a few over the years, I can maybe show it on my community page, but I don’t know
@@Lelix_crazyriver Ah, that's Landcross from "Transformers: Victory."
7:06 Toei and Zordon says that Harada Sanosuke will attains city-stomping Godzilla-esque proportions. Also note: Toei Company and Zordon says that Toei Company's Combiners will fight against Giant Harada Sanosuke
I just recently got CW Defensor, and I really like his Concept of a Rescue Unit becoming a Bigger one to solve bigger problems.
Was so excited when Devastator first came out. Saw the Contructicons at Toys R Us and picked them up immediately. Imagine my chagrin when I merged them together to find that Devastator was only about as tall as G1 Soundwave. Some giant…
