- Scenes from Mambo’s Rescue Mission!
This was no small mission! It cost us R30 000, with the helicopters, vet and diesel used. It took several days and nights of sweat and stress. It took two helicopters. And a lot of searching in the stormy summer rain. But we were able to locate and relocate Mambo, to reunite him with his herd.

You might be wondering why we couldn’t simply let Mambo go… There are many reasons involved, but namely our reserve has a tourism presence, with other safari lodges, and with Mambo being used to humans, due to the care and protection of the carers over the years, he could become a problem elephant and pose a risk for human-elephant conflict, by getting too close to humans or settlements. He could cause harm to himself and people.
Mambo might be able to be released into the wild one day but it will be in a different reserve where there is no human presence.
Mambo is loved by his herd and his mother and simply letting him go with no warning could cause distress to his herd.
Mambo has tried to join the wild herds before but they ultimately left him and he was roaming alone. He doesn’t have the experience of being alone in the wild and since he is our responsibility, we need to ensure no risk of harm to him.

I wish I could win the lottery to keep all animals safe. Safe from poachers. Poachers should be shot on site, no questions asked. Animals deserve better, I love elephants, I love them all. If ever I do win big anywhere, A large amount of it will go to help animals in need. Animals are important to me, every one. I commend everyone involved in bringing Manno safely home. These men ,and the whole party deserve recommendations for their love for these animals and their caring. 😊

Naughty boy, Mambo! My screensaver is a photo of the back of him at 6 years old, when I met him and Lundi on my first visit to Camp Jabulani in 2015. He made a big impression on me then! 💕🐘💕

@@zamzamahmed8139 it was as a visitor. I discovered Camp Jabulan, as it was called then, in late 2014. I've been a return guest and did volunteer at next door HESC in 2017. Unfortunately they stopped their volunteer programme during covid and have not revived it.
@@Kim-lc3fv oh thats so lovely of you for being a supporter of their work since your first visit. It must have been a great feeling to visit few times and see how fast the young ones grow fast. For me it is an eye opener following khanysa's progress as i used to think elephants stay small for a while. But now that she is three years old she is a big girl. So thanks for sharing your time there with us. I am wondering if mum and step dad in their 70s woul love going there as they seem not wanting to travel much in the last few years. Take care 🌹👍🏽

I realize now how serious this was for everyone at HERD. We were all.posting semi comic comments but this was dangerous and serious for Mambo. To the other elephants it was stressful and yes painful to have a member of their family just disappear. I saw the concern Lundi was displaying and can only imagine her fears.
I'm So Sorry this occurred for the carers, the other faithful HERD elephants and especially to our leader Adine. I salute Adine, the carers , the guides, our Dr Roger's and his assistant. I'm sure many of us will help with the cost of getting Mambo back to safety and his family. Adine, once again you show us your fierce dedication, respect , love and leadership skills when we all needed them. We stand with you.

.. Me-Too .. Very Distressing to see "Mambo" so "Helpless" .. I am So-Relieved that he is Safe now .. I wish he could "roam-free" to create his own "family-herd", but I understand that the "timing & circumstances" of doing this is "Extremely Dangerous" for him ..
It was very distressing even for us it is never an easy thing to do.

It actually wasn't too expensive considering they did two missions. 30,000 South African Rands is $1,623. That's pretty cheap

This is my first time watching this 11 days later! As an avid watcher of Herd for years, I don't know how I missed this! Big Hugh thank you to all there at Herd in finding Mambo! That bull could move fast! This is coming out of your allowance Mambo and no driving for a month, 😆😆. He could have been injured by the wild bulls and that would really be sad for his own herd. Even with elephant teenagers, it’s always something. Excellent recovery by all involved. That boy needs a tracking device on him.
I feel for Lundi. Shame man, I hear she was soooo excited when he was found. He probably wants to be mothered but not smothered however it will be terrible to lose him as he's used to humans 😢. The herd would have been upset as they were when Fish went off on his jol. They only calmed down when he got back home. I bet Lundi will not let him out of her sight now, but sometimes she is airey fairy and goes into her own world. I have the greatest respect for Tigere and his guys. Thanks everyone. 👍

NO NO NO. We love these elephants, we don't want human collard on them like their digs. They are semi wild now, and in the right circumstance Adine will decide when to rewild all of the ones wh I can survive in the bush. Putting collars on wildlife is a human act to control them. It is ethically wrong.

He is an ELEPHANT in a HERD, strong, intelligent and able to do fine manipulations with his trunk and no lack of assistance, how short do you think he will need to figure how to remove it?
My heart is broken. Poor Mambo. Sending him lots of love and wish I could bring him comfort. His natural instinct to establish his independence is so strong but any attempt for him to pursue it will be thwarted. I understand why, but it breaks my heart. 🥺😢😭🇨🇦

Poor Mambo. I bet he was so scared. Tracking him with a device sounds like a great idea. What a massive effort that was done by all to get Mambo safely back to his family, both Ellies and Humans. Thank you Lord for letting them get Mambo safely.

I like to think he deliberately choose to flee during rain so his footprints can't be tracked.
People before asking why Hen can flee of the reserve, ..read the description...., we all know they do the best for the Ellies, ♥
