I got a chuckle out of you in Australia using a 13mm wrench on a 1/2inch nut and I'm in the USA using a 1/2 inch wrench on a 13mm nut on my VW beetle :-)
Mitch, Thanks very much for another of your clear instructional videos. There are many Model T mechanics out there, but very few are gifted with the ability to teach others in a clear and organized presentation.
Thank you so much for doing these videos, they are great. I’m no mechanic (the opposite actually) , as I believe everyone needs a good mechanic), but this ‘girly girl’ from Texas decided to buy a Model T (1924 Roadster), it’s been my bucket list, to live in a 1920s house and own a 1920s Ford Model T…. So I have only driven it twice (still learning) and my starter went out, everyone in our T Club, said “you can do it”…. So I found these videos , ordered a starter. And today was all about taking the starter and bendix off… and I did it, without loosing the key…. I was so nervous about it, I think I spent more time prepping the area, rags, tools I might need, setting up shop lights around car… lol…. And not only did I NOT loose the key, I didn’t drop the starter on the ground when I took the last bolt off 😂…. I’m actually pretty excited now about getting the new one on!!! Again this video was amazing I had it next to me and would play a part and pause it and do what you did, then start video again…. It was great!!!! Here’s to getting the new one on!!! T’ing in Texas !
Great Video. I am getting ready to replace my starter. I took notes of your replacement process along the way and feel very confident I can replace the starter!
I just had a 26 T Touring car restored that was my great grandfathers car. He bought it used in 1929 from his uncle. It was passed down to my grandfather(passed in 84), my Dad (passed away 2 years ago), and now me. It has moved from barn to basements, to storage and now it resides in my workshop. My kids love it!
I cringed when you layed the wrench on top of the battery :-) I was thinking of you a few days ago as to when you'd be coming out with another video. Happy fall down under, it's spring up over and about time, I hate winter. Hi to Mrs Taylor.
I think I always leave SOMETHING cringe worthy in my videos haha it makes for interesting comments 😋 but I was careful not to cause a short circuit 😊 well spotted 😊
Brilliant video! The starter on my ‘27 coupe started dragging then died. Too bad for me, I replaced it before you made this video. It was my first time to do a T starter so it was a learning experience. I made the mistake of taking all the screws out of the bendex cover. It took several tries to get that bottom screw back in! Your videos are so good! Like the way you show every step and include little boo boos, small errors like any human being would do. I have a problem I wish you would address in a video. I’ve taken all the steps I know to do, but my T wants to over heat. I had the radiator redone. They had to remove a loose baffle in my original radiator. I replaced hoses, put new bearings on the fan, new fan belt, flushed out the block. I live in a hilly area but a T should handle that. The only thing I haven’t done is remove the water pump. Mine came with it already installed. Some people tell me that will make a T overheat, but it is a water pump designed to cool the engine. Can you or your subscribers give me suggestions? Thanks and keep making the videos!
hi mitch howe are u big fan from the uk heer the way u take care of that modle t is fantastic she will be pottering on long after we have gone grate job keeping her on the rode and in such grate shape
I've been procrastinating for years to install my new starter motor, so I'm very thankful to have found this video ! I have just 1 question. At minute 20:30 "if you damage the coils on your magneto, you won't be able to drive the car at all, unless you've got a battre" What IS a bat-tree, and where do I get one ? Is it anything like having a bat in my bell-free ?
@ModelTMitch qq lol, not making an effort, shows the ignorance of certain Americans. Many years ago I was a commercial fisherman on th⛵Bering sea. We hired 2 world-travelling kiwi 'fencers' [a new one to me]. Great young men who stayed in their rack or praying to a bucket. We had fun, learned much about our world and our co-habitants, and gladly payed them for the laughs
Hi Mitch, I hope to get my T on the road soon having carried out some work. Cant wait for my 1st drive. You touched on the fact you had fitted a brake light, could you explain or do a video on that as I for one would like to put one on mine?
Just A friendly suggestion, Replacing the gaskets before installing the starter and Bendix cover is highly recommended . Lots of oil is slung around whilst the engine is running. Great VID , I viewed it before reinstalling my '25 starter as a "refresher" for me! Thank you.
I was putting back my starter motor and found that I had some difficulty getting the screw bolts alighted so I cut a couple of studs cut from old bolts and used two while getting the screw bolts back in then removed the studs for the last two, it helped support and align!
Nice install. I was wondering why you don't put die - electric grease on the terminals it helps keep them from corooding up. any way like the videos keep them coming..
At 30:18, just before you tapped the key. Kind of funny, but the reason it wouldn't go on is the two Bendix heads weren't aligned with each other. As you tapped the key, by luck the inner head started rotating CCW and fell into alignment with the key. Then it slid on. I don't think the tapping made it work. Question: How far in do you slide the Bendix assembly? Does it push up to the starter nose?
Good job Mitch, now go get a new and longer screw driver. And while you bare at it in a week or so of driving RECECK those Bendix Cover screws. The are notorious for falling out and draining your engine of oil. With those round top screws you can never get the snug enough. I changed mine out to Allen screws and have an Allen socket attachment and an extension for that soul purpose.
I like your suggestions 😊 the longer screwdriver would have certainly been good! Everything got in the way haha! But I managed with the tools I had, and I’m pleased to say it all works fine 😊 thanks for the comment and I will definitely recheck the screws!
Oh, and good thing you didn't loose any cover screws. They are a special thread that is not avail. at the hardware store and nobody make them. The rebuilder that did my engine retapped them for east find variety. @@ModelTMitch
Great video, I enjoy your model T videos. It looks to me that the limiter tab on your bolt is on the wrong side of the spring. The spring will not stop it from turning counter clockwise (loosening) until it spins around to the other side of the spring.
Very good point you make there, although what you see in the disassembly here is how my starter has always been and it’s never come undone. 😊 so I simply reassembled the Bendix as it came out and made sure it was tight 😊
Thanks for the great videos, I've watched them all. Sorry to Dis your video I was just thinking out loud. I've always been intrigued by the model T because of the simplicity of design and planetary transmission that was the four runner of the automatic. keep the great videos coming!@@ModelTMitch
Great video Mitch, ? Are you doing anything with the Ford tractor? Did you fix the hole in the engine block? Are you going to do a video on the tractor.
Hi Mitch. Thanks for the video. I have a 1930 Model A pickup. I always wanted a 1914 Model T. I kind of cringed when you were making do with metric wrenches (spanners?). Can I send you a set of American correct size wrenches that will securely fit on your fasteners? Inexpensive in USA but don't know about Australian duty or taxes. Maybe help it will help keep you from barking the skin off your knuckles when the loose fit tool slips, or rounding off the flats on your fasteners. Your channel is first rate sir! Thanks. Chuck in Wildomar, California.
Modern starter motors also have them.... A Bendix drive is a type of engagement mechanism used in starter motors of internal combustion engines. The device allows the pinion gear of the starter motor to engage or disengage the flywheel of the engine automatically when the starter is powered or when the engine fires, respectively.
i cringed as soon as you began prying up the negative battery cable. the post can be easily broken that way. either spread the clamp or use a terminal puller. it can save you money and heartache. especially noting how expensive optima batteries are. love you auto!
Are you sure you have the battery hooked up correctly? Not a Model T expert, but all later Fords from the Model A (1928) through 1955 were POSITIVE ground, not negative ground. I would check that.
Good video , but I would suggest you would be safer to remove your wedding ring before working on any machinery , they have a habit of causing injuries like a path for voltage if you make a bridge between circuits which might burn you , as it takes longer to heat up before your aware and once hot it burns longer or catch on moving parts that otherwise might slide .
What do you think about converting the magneto according to Nikola Tesla's patent so that it can also function as a motor and starter as was originally intended? with love :-)TSC #4ALLE
As a retired auto electrician l highly recommend removing jewelry like wedding rings and watches with metal straps etc when working with or near batteries cables and all electrical wiring. 👎🏼😢🇳🇿

You should make videos on more cars , still very entertaining, my favourite car channel so far

GPOLICE Yes I fixed the problem by removing the water pump and putting my T back like Henry made it! End of the over heating!
Awesome, needed to pull my starter , this video was extremely helpful.
Thank you

My Australian accent is stronger sometimes 🤣 I'm saying "battery" 🤣 but sometimes Aussies have a tendency to shorten words in speech 🤣

Where did u get starter from
Found a reconditioned one on eBay of all places!
I'm afraid to ask how much that was to ship.
Haha! Almost as much as I paid for the car in 2011... the Australian government held their hand out for vehicle import tax as well....
Is'nt it an idea to put an old baking tin on the ground to catch the accidently falling thingies?
What the flippermajig is a bendix. Sounds like a prescription drug for stiff joints. Does my modern car have one?
Modern starter motors also have them.... A Bendix drive is a type of engagement mechanism used in starter motors of internal combustion engines. The device allows the pinion gear of the starter motor to engage or disengage the flywheel of the engine automatically when the starter is powered or when the engine fires, respectively.
No, I think the Studebaker was the last car to use a starter with a true Bendix drive. You probably have an Overrunning Clutch starter drive.

1949 ford car starter installed
How many times is he going to say Bendix cover?
Nice video, but why not invest in a set of proper tools!?
Look at the dodgey cable management this guy has done absolutely ghetto
