This is actually a rather brilliant interpretation of the piece. I saw this in music class in elementary long ago and completely forgot about it. The lore behind it was lost on me then. It is perfect, the only thing I would have liked if they used the version with the Norwegian choir it would have given it more impact.
It is a really great interpretation. It sounds like the strings are speaking to the rhythm of the woodwinds (more specifically, the voice of the mountain creatures speaking to the green man). I'm glad someone else thought so too. The choir is a little much for me though, it feels a little melodramatic
Instead, he used another great piece of music - 'Night on Bald Mountain' by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, for the 'Chernabog' segment, which concludes the movie (along with Ave Maria).
I was ready for the little troll to be chased out and eaten, but instead i got an inclusive bunch of gouls showing him how to have a good time and summon the flaming god of sass. too cute

i saw this in my music class and it changed my life. And now that i think back to it i think it was the piece that brought me into classical music and im happy that it was.
The little green guy looked completely lost ( in the cave, and life in general) and somehow he found himself led astray to the lair of the ghoulish mountain king, where he was finally consumed by the wickedness that resides there ( he turns red once he joins the others)
Me acuerdo que mi mamá me contó que mi papá me ponía estos tipos de animaciones cuando era pequeño, no lo jusgo tremenda obra de arte, en paz descanse mi viejo
Well, the animation is not accurate. The music comes from the opera "Peer Gynt" and describes the following scene: The King of the Trolls - the "Old Man" - disguised as a tramp, and his daughter - the "Redhead" - dressed in sloppy clothes and wearing an ugly face mask, sing about transience. The old man has promised his daughter Peer Gynt as her husband. When Aase and Solveig pass by in search of Peer, the trolls become invisible. Aase tells them about Peer's childhood. Even then he had confused his dreams with reality. After they have moved on, Peer and Ingrid appear. Peer has now lost interest in her and pushes her away. Ingrid leaves angrily. The redhead approaches Peer and snaps him out of his thoughts. She arouses his interest when she tells him that her father is the "Dovre King", but her ugliness repels him. Then the scene darkens briefly and the redhead transforms into a provocatively beautiful woman. A pink carousel pig appears, she climbs into the saddle and pulls Peer towards her. The pig slowly sinks into the ground towards the troll kingdom. Together with the other trolls, the old man awaits his daughter and Peer, who slowly sinks to the ground with the pig. He asks Peer if he wants to take his daughter as his wife. Peer replies that he already has her, but now he wants to have his kingdom too. The trolls laugh at this. Peer joins their ranks and is given a troll's tail. He has to swear never to do anything other than what suits him. Amid shouts of approval and the singing of the troll anthem, Peer receives donkey ears and medals. At the end of the ritual, Peer has to do an eye test. Kitty the cow and Kid the billy goat (a masked clown) appear and Peer has to say what he has seen. Because Peer couldn't find anything nice about the performance, the trolls want to put out one of his eyes and scratch the other. Only then can he see everything as they do. Peer refuses and declares that he wants to give up his bride and kingdom. The trolls do not accept his refusal and attack him. In his distress, Peer calls Solveig for help. Bells ring and the trolls disappear. Peer completes his newly built hut. He wants to keep out trolls and other riff-raff with a wooden castle. Solveig, who has heard his call, appears. She has left her family and now wants to stay with him forever. He happily invites her into the house. While he is still fetching wood for the fire, the redhead emerges from the bushes in her original ugly form with an equally ugly boy. She claims he is Peer's son and insists on being able to stay with him. She doesn't mind living with Solveig either. Peer realizes that he cannot escape her here and decides to flee. When Solveig calls for him, he claims that he still has work to do in the forest. Solveig looks after him until the sun has set.

I’ve tried to find this song matching with this specific cartoon for so long. One day the memory of listening to this just popped up from when I first heard (probs when i was literally 5 y/o) wow
Finally I found it! I remember this from when I was 5 or 6, one night my parents left me at home with my grandpa and he fell asleep, and I was checking channels at random and found this and after watching I was so god damn scared of going to sleep.
there was a video in first grade that was playing with this song... this could have been the video, but ever sense this song like scared me, so now every time i listen to it i have a weird feeling
If you assume for a moment that the whole thing happens inside Smeagol's mind (LOTR), this is a perfect metaphor of him being tempted by the Ring. He descends into the "dark cave" inside his mind where scary, evil things live, sees the RING of black wraiths dancing and then joins it by changing (into Gollum). Also, everyone is dancing to the dark lord's - Sauron's - evil tune. Just a thought.
You know, I've always wondered what Hall of the Mountain King would have looked like if it were featured in Fantasia, and I must say, I'm not disappointed
Ah nostalgia, I remember watching this on my tv when I was 10, on channel svt1 or ettan (swedish for channel 1). It was the first time I heard In the hall of the mountain king, never saw this music video again, until recently finding it here.
Wow. I like this. And it reminds me LOTR a little bit. Just think: The Mountain King is Sauron, and that green guy is Gollum/Frodo, and by joining the dance they actually give him the ring, and when he jumps into the fire and gets greater and stronger, it is actually because he ragained his weapon.
Sorry but this predates J. R. R. Tolkien by several years. It was written by Grieg in 1875, he died in 1904. Tolkien was Born: January 3, 1892 Died: September 2, 1973. I love how you guys seem to equalize Satan with Sauron. If you actually read the books, you'd now that Sauron is actually just a servant to an older and greater evil known as Melkor to the Valar and Morgoth to the Elves. *He's* supposed to be the Middle-Earth equivalent of the Devil. Sauron is basically a lesser demon.
