  • This was breathtaking - quite literally speechless, so be ready to watch a video where I just sound like an idiot.
    And ignore the sound of my animals trying to destroy my house.

    "Qi-Tian" and "I Don't Care" are Hua's original, others are Hua choose the closest to what he wants.
    FYI~~Hua Chenyu said :
    Actually, each song I sang in Singer2018 reflects a different mountain in the uphill battle of personal growth.
    "Qi Tian" => My arrival;
    "Child" => My childhood;
    "Nunchucks" => My arrogance;
    "I Don't Care" => My apathy;
    "Flammable and Explosive" => The world's conflicting expectations of me;
    "Wayfarer" => My disappointment after opening up to the world;
    "Fake Monk" => My inner struggle and salvation;
    "Ordinary Path" => Clenching my teeth to face myself;
    "I Am What I Am" => Finding myself.
    The last song after I have scaled to the mountaintop is
    "Shout" => surpassing myself.

    He really re-worked this song to make it his and to make it communicate what he wanted it to. Those “ooooohs” you like are actually from his song “Mayfly” off of his second album. He also slowed the tempo of “Ordinary Path” way way down, and that choral part where he stands on his riser and offers up his mic with the new melody is all him. And, of course, the part just after that is very much Hua Hua, where he scream-sings notes in pitch while back-up singers sing the layered chorus and choral part. That is all his composition and arrangement.
    I’ve found that to be one of his signatures in composition. ( the scream-singing harmony over the melody) He does it frequently in his writing or re-arrangements of songs. I think the emotional impact it has and the emotionality it creates, speaks to him as a creator so it is just part of his modus operandi.
    2018 Singer still had the rule that only two songs could be your own. But the Singer powers-that-be allowed for (and encouraged, I think) the artists re-working the cover songs they chose to best suit them. So in this song....and a few others, I think I recall...he was able to cut in parts of other melodies/songs he had previously written, or just wrote new parts into the cover songs.
    As an example, “Nunchucks” by Jay Chou was a full-on rap song with a totally different rhythm. (Though it did have the brief piano interlude that Hua Hua left in and beefed up) What Hua Hua did to “Nunchucks” was straight up brilliance, reinventing it to something superior to the original. In my opinion, he did the same with this song, “Ordinary Path” making it a much more complex and nuanced message.
    I think...and I’ll admit easily that I could be totally wrong here...that the emotional intensity that he focused on the lyrics changed the message of the song from the original. In the beginning his eyes are closed a lot, and when they aren’t, they are fixed, his face sad and resigned, but not soft. His tone and the mic effect, as well as his inclusion of the “Mayfly” melody, are ambient and lulling, melodic in a way that is comforting, but his face shows an edge, like you may be lulled right now, but that isn’t the whole story.
    When he goes into the first chorus his eyes stay fixed, but they are more hard now than resigned, and when he looks up, they are defiant with a shadow of pain. Then when he goes into the second verse that mentions fantasizing, the ambience of the music is still lulling his body, but the lyrics are delivered with increasing disgust. He goes into the Mayfly ooohs again, almost as if his character is trying to lull himself back into a resigned state, but it doesn’t work, because when he goes into the part about “ used to destroy...” his defiance is now coldly pissed off. You still see the pain behind it in flashes, but the primary emotion is still a pissed-off defiance...leashed...like he can’t just break away from the choice to be ordinary because when he did before it led to an almost bi-polar state of highs then consuming pain and destruction, but he is disgusted and defiant about it because “ordinary” is not his natural state. His body moves with agitation before he then resolutely but slowly and considered, with the slightest hesitation, moves to his riser and steps up on it. I’m not decided about what offering up his mic means...maybe it is his character allowing himself a few seconds of that feeling he used to have before he shut down his emotional self to be ordinary...of glorying in music, so offering the mic is sort of a sacred homage to music and performance itself...I’m not entirely sure about that, but the scream-singing he does when he brings the mic back down is pain, not throwing the emotion out there like Hua Hua does when he is expressing himself that way, but the character’s pain of gathering his emotion back in and leashing it again. I think that because when he starts singing the “destroy” part again, although the defiant fist is up, his eyes are full of pain. His face and body aren’t showing abject pain though, they are stilling into resolute like he is forcing himself from full expression into a despised but inevitable acceptance, because after he abruptly cuts off his note and drops his arms, when he brings the mic up to sing the line “and being ordinary” his expression is back to a barely leashed angry and defiant, with both underlying pain and a shadow of resignation. The two sad ooh sounds maybe being a last expression of sadness, or a failed attempt to self-lull, because when Hua Hua ends the performance with that last deliberate look straight at the camera, his face is bleak. Eyes back to resignation that is still defiant, always defiant, but leashed again all the same. I think the bleak look is about the character desperately wishing he could achieve full numbness from all of his emotion so he can escape the bleak futility of feeling his loss, but his natural state, although apparently one that leads to instability, is one of extraordinary, so he can’t achieve a complete lack of suffering in this state of “ordinary” that he has forced himself into.
    It’s interesting that the in-studio audience and the at-home audience perceived two different performances; the in-studio audience, for the most part couldn’t see his eyes in detail because they don’t use big screens to show close-ups to the studio audience, so they are responding with happiness and adulation to his performance of the song and his magnetism in general, but the performance for the at-home audience included all of the deliberate looks straight into the camera, and the camera focusing closely on his face a lot of the time, so the performance comes across almost intimately. His character telling his story to the pov of the camera as a person.
    Hua Hua has said that if you plan to just sing a song, put out a record. If you are going to perform on a stage, you must respect the stage by giving a performance. Part of the reason he’s such a good actor is his innate ability to internalize music and actually experience the emotions he wants to communicate to an audience over and over again. He can craft out a performance exactly how he wants it to be, while still sincerely feeling the emotion of it every time he practices or performs it.
    Most people can tell when someone is trying to convey emotions, but not actually feeling them because it looks and sounds contrived and false. Part of why Hua Hua is so admired by other professionals as well as regular fans, is his incredible courage to be completely vulnerable in a performance. To experience and communicate any emotion he is driven to convey without shielding himself at all from the audience. It is a primary reason of why he is such a powerful performer.
    To me, even in its original form, I always thought this song was heartbreaking, although there are other opinions on that. Hua Hua’s version, to me, is incredibly heartbreaking, but, gauging by his deliberately shown facial expressions that were, in themselves, the most important part of the performance, it seems that the story the character wanted to tell was a heartbreaking one.
    Or. I could be completely full of shit.😀

    This is one of my favorite. He chose it because of the deep meaning was related to him. Although it's a cover, but his adaptation was entirely his personal characteristics. He concentrated all his emotions in the song. He gave you not just a song for entertainment. That's the touch of souls. He is a precious treasure.

    8:03 You didn't go quite far enough back to get the meaning of that sentence. The full lyric is "while you are still fantasizing about your tomorrow, wondering whether she (it) will be better or worse, for me it's just another day". In other words, while you are worrying about what may be coming and getting yourself all anxious about it, I'm just living my life. I'm just being an ordinary person living an ordinary life, living in the moment and being fully present in everything I do. We can't change what's coming, so there's no point in worrying myself about it; I'm just going to live it as it comes.

    “Fake Monk” and “Seven Personalities” are some of my favourites. They deeply reflect Hua’s inner struggle to his dark side. It need huge courage to face them again. I also like “Bullfight” “Wild Contra”and “Arrival” in the new album/Singer 2020. Hua expanded his music genre and very successful. I will also recommend you “Quasimodo’s Gift”, “Giant Deer”, “Salt of the Earth” and “Candles”, the graceful pieces.
    I enjoy watching Hua’s music video as rest in busy life. Now added your reaction to my list - a naughty 3-year-old boy’s mother.

    The "another day" part my understanding is, to the lyrics writer is describing a person, who has a "goal/purpose" within him/her, so what today or tomorrow doesn't matter, as time is just a frame to describe the environment change base on the solar system we are living in(in terms of the relation btw Sun/Earth, you have a sense of day/night, having 24/7/365).

    I feel like TH-cam need a reaction video system where reaction videos are grouped under the original. Maybe the reaction video shares half of the views and monitization. The owner of the original can set their own standards for people to produce reaction videos and have an incentive to produce reaction friendly content i.e subtitles.

    The meaning of the song is deep. In Chinese culture, the parents demand a lot from the children. They want their children to be top pianist and top violinist. When the children could not achieve that SPECIAL PATH goal , they completely broke down. Hence the song ordinary path is the answer.

I also appreciate the original version Ordinary Path by Pu Shu very much. Pu Shu is another shy reserved introvert who does not like talking too much. Very sympathetic and unpretentious artist. Then again a lot of chinese artists seems to be quite shy off stage, respectful and humble since thats the preferred norm of behaviour in the entertainment industry. This song was written by legendary folk/pop Chinese singer/songwriter Pu Shu, whom HuaHua greatly admires. Pu Shu is especially renowned for his wonderful, poetic lyrics; sort of like Paul Simon is in the US. Here's a link to an example of his work; a video he made for a documentary on a small group of Buddhist Chinese peasants who made a pilgrimage to Tibet, walking and performing Buddhist rituals all the way. The documentary is interesting and the video is spectacular: 朴树《No Fear In My Heart》(电影《冈仁波齐》主题曲) - TH-cam

    Don’t remember which video, but you talked about Ace vs Ace did you watch an episode? It is really funny. 2 seasons, season 4 and season 5, of Hua Hua as host (which everyone in the show was surprised about that the director chose him as one of the hosts). Season 5 has English subs on TH-cam (a little hard to find but i found the entire playlist once). It talks about deep stuff at the end but the majority of the time they play games and I’m so excited to see season 6.
    This Ace Family (the 4 hosts) has had the most succes and the director is very happy with them so season 6 will be the same hosts. They have already started filming, I heard a Chinese band was also coming, I wonder which one...

    This is a very profound song. The original song is sung by Mr. Pu Shu, who is a pure singer. He writes a lot of good songs and is very famous and popular in China, but he is very poor. He only comes out for some activities and makes some money when he has no money. He's a bit of an outcast in this age of entertainment. He is more shy than Hua chenyu and less able to express himself. I prefer to listen to the original song.
