    *I can't believe I watched the whole thing!* I love the theme of the video, but I'm not at all interested in the product. I love doing vector mirrors, they're quick and easy, but photos? Pass! There's just too much testing and expense that goes into this because every photo is completely different. And then you've got the clean up! I'll bet your module is due for a lens cleaning after one day! But your points about focus and testing are spot on, and something I try and teach people. You gotta do your testing!

      Got one more in this series. Going to do a shorter video showing how the same "perfect" settings , won't produce the same quality from one mirror to another. Driving home the importance of testing. Then I don't want to see another mirror for a long time.

      @@HoboWithWood 🤪 I don't do photos on mirrors because even photo is different and it takes way too much time and materials.

      I've got one more video in this series working with these mirrors. The settings I had the best outcome with were extremely surprising. Not what I would have normally thought I use. Now I want to show the difference using the same image and settings on three different mirror types and show the difference.

    Haven't messwith m_ diode laser in 4 or 5 years, but I used GIMP and a plu%in called Da Big Gimp. It takes a photo, gray scales it, THEN, converts it to a negative. I had better results using that combo than the online service or trying to do it in Lightburn. But that was usi n g Lightburn 0.8 something.

    I flip the image and laser from the back side it may take 2-3 runs sometimes but im running my 150w at like 300mm with 17% power I also use Jarvis or stuki most of the time. Did a parents wedding image for a young man, that went on a light puck so that the light comes through the edge. Also have done a 12inch round circle mirror with a zodiac circle on it that I painted with hammered black that came out real nice then I lasered a Merry Christmas with vintage santa on it that I am painting with red green white and black.

    Yes, I really have to wonder if you were using a higher quality mirror. I think the inconsistency of the mirror coating caused all manor of inconsistencies in your testing.

    • @HoboWithWood
      @HoboWithWood  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Don't know if the are "better" quality. But I'm sure they are different quality. The next video and last video addressing this topic for a while will be demonstrating just that. Before I spent two days searching for the best/fastest setting for these mirrors, I had already demonstrated excellent results at lower speeds and power. But viewers were wanting to see the attempt at higher speeds and powers. I continually stress anyone wanting to see these results for themselves to purchase the same mirrors I was using. hobowithwood.com/4inchmirrors This is the only way to expect the same results. This type of mirror is not my favorite. I plan to show three different mirror types and results on each. I will use the same settings and laser and have very different outcomes. As I said, I had already achieved excellent images on the mirrors. I was only showing those interested, how I got there. Because knowing how to find the sweet spot is crucial.

      @UltimoV 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have used these mirrors and they are the worst for engraving. The reason is exactly what you said - the white coating on the back is bad. It has inconsistent thickness, like it was brushed on. I got the dark grey-black coated mirrors and they work like a charm on my diode. High quality even coating makes a huge difference.

    Thoroughly enjoyed your video but tried to get the mirrors you used and they are unavailable on amazon uk so will have to either wait till back in stock or buy some different ones and go through all the trial and error. i'm also using an xtool D1 pro 20w but will use some of your settings as a start off.

    wow Steve... I watch you guys all the time... Great video.. But confused the hell out of me with this "focus, pre-focus sub-focus" stuff. I focus my present laser now for engraving (not cutting) at 17 mm. So what would I do now? Create a new 16 mm focusing tool for doing "those" mirrors?

    • @HoboWithWood
      @HoboWithWood  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Okay. First. "Pre" comes first. "Pre-Focus" is before the focus for the material being used. Then you fave "Focus". Then comes "Sub", or below below. Keep in mind I made the terms up after getting confused by the temrinology Rich uses to express the same thing. Pre is before and Sub is below. A separate focus tool is not needed for Pre-focusing. I simply lay a piece of material on the engrave surface then lay the focus tool down and good to go. It's very rare that I sub-focus lately. I'm not doing many projects that require it. Now that I've hopefully cleared up that made up terminology, why do I do it? Your laser comes out of the module and wider than the optimum focus point. Beyond the optimum focus point it starts to widen back out. It looks like and hourglass on a BlackWidow. By using prefocus you are widen the laser beam at the surface of the material. When using a really high LPI you can get actual lines in your image if it is focused correctly, or normally. When you raise or Prefocus the laser, the wider laser beam helps to hide the lines because it begins to overlap itself. There is a lot going on and it can get confusing.

    I buy a lot off of Amazon so I changed my link to the hobowithwood hopefully that helps. I am on SS and can not afford to do the Pateron thing either.

      It helps. It helps bunches. It's only pennies. But pennies add up to dollars. Thank you! I'm not old enough to draw SS, yet. But even when I do, since I've been self-emplyed most of my life. I'm not going to draw that much when I do. Some people say they are working with a fixed income. I say I'm working with a broke income.

      It happened once in 24 mirrors. I was running this laser like it was a commercial laser for two days straight. This one anomaly is not that concerning under the circumstances.

    • @HoboWithWood
      @HoboWithWood  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Can you? Sure. I guess depending on the power of the laser and the type of mirror used, it maight even be necessary. That's why you test. If you can't find the right speed and power settings in a single pass a cross-hatch might be necessary.

    I watched a very small section and realised that 1. Don't do photos and mirrors, text hell yeah. 2. USE A BETTER QUALITY MIRROR. Why did you even attempt this on those mirrors.

    • @HoboWithWood
      @HoboWithWood  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you watched more than "a very small section," you would've seen the answers to your questions. Part of what I talk about is this varying quality of mirrors and what to look for. And I'm glad you are content to not learn anything new. The fewer the number of folks are doing this, the higher I can keep the price on my finished pieces. Fortunately, not everyone has the patience or ability to learn how to do photos on mirrors. My lighted 12" mirrors done as a memorial piece sell for several hundred dollars. Memorial mirrors give folks the ability to literally see themselves in the reflections of their loved ones' eyes. But you keep making your simple little mirrors. You can eventually sell enough of them to earn the same amount I earn from a single mirror. Regardless of whether this technique is beyond your abilities or interests, simply don't watch and move on. When you put feedback like you did, criticize something you admittedly didn't watch, and your use of caps to convey your thoughts is more of a reflection on you than on the video. Your reality is not a universal one. When you make narrow-minded posts like this, you do yourself an injustice.
