***** Usually you evacuate before destroying a house. Hollow respawn in a world thats been destroyed might also be a fate worse than the already terrible purgatory that they have now.
Quite cleary, the etheral tree is ment to reprecent Yggdrasil, the world tree, and the Millwood knights, are ment to be a sterotypical type of Viking, though I do like that they added what felt like druidism and Shamanish into the mix with their weapons. Its very VERY creative. The dragon makes me think of a dragon again from norse myth, the dragon that where bitting the roots of Yggdrasil, that being Níðhöggr. As it lives at the rotes, it can be said to live in the abyss, in the darkness.
Ullr ᚢᛚᛚᚱ Well, if we go by the sterotype that alote of people got for Vikings, even do I don't really share it as ive been having history lessons and read up on them myself (cus i live in Sweden I guess). ANyhow, the Sterotype is HUGE men with huge axes and weapons, with horns on their helmet, and even if they ddien't have it normaly, its how alote of people think of when they think Viking.
so, the other day I found something interesting on the chieftains greataxe, there's an inscription carved into both blades on both sides, and, seeing as someone decrypted the writing on the titanite slab, I'd love it if someone could give some insight into this
Just want to point out that the stone guardians in the royal wood in AoTA DLC also have a similar "earth shattering" attack. Millwood-Royal wood. Similar attack. Near Kalameet. Some lore connection? maybe im reaching
I wonder if the Millwood Knights are actually lost Tarnished, who wandered far from The Lands Between after their banishment. They remember the Erdtree in form, but not its true name, knowing it only as an "Ethereal Tree" in their fading memories. And in a roundabout way their banishment happened because of the peace that came after the war against the dragons ended. Maybe they remember the part about dragons and being driven from their home, but not that they were banished as a result of peace with the dragons making their warrior natures useless to the new order.
I don't know why people keep saying ashes of Ariandel is bad DLC. Everything about it is awe inspiring. From the voice acting to the concept of the whole painting. I think people that say this is a shallow DLC are the ones that rush through everything and skip all the dialogues. You have to learn to appreciate or everything becomes insignificant. Cheers to you for making these videos.
I still consider Kalameet the abyss dragon that attacked Millwood. Midir is said to be put in the ringed city to make sure no one gets in or out. Why would he leave it to fight a forest? And Kalameet has a track record of terrorizing the woods of forests.
Chonk Chonker maybe because the milwood tree got rotten by dark or the abyss and then midir seeks it out and destroy the whole civilization to contain it?
Pretty much. The Undead, Unkindled, and etc do just rise from the dead in order to kill random beings without even understanding the purpose of doing so.
well, aren't we always? ;) we're basically some mute zombiefied psychopath killing everything on sight. how long can you justify slaughtering noble creatures like Sif and Ornstein, or Queelag who only wanted to protect her sister, with a murky promise of saving the world...?
SpaceCatFatman not at all, the old corvian dude in the corvian settlement says that is the way of the painting to burn when it is time to do so; and that the rot is preventing the natural way of things. you are simply performing what the denizens of the painting would hav done if friede hadn't showed up. neither good or bad imo; just nature taking its course.
Man, now that I think about it the Protagonist in souls game is just kind of a silent psychopath that goes around killing more or less anything that so much as looks at us.
Millwood knights seem to be very much inspired by norse mythology. Ethereal Oak is probably Yggdrasil (though Yggdrasil is usually regarded as an ash-tree) and the abyss dragon is probably Nidhöggr, who gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil and swallows the dead. The whole "the world is placed on trees" thing was already established in DS1 and Gwynns story to stop the inevitable end of the gods is the same as Odins, who desperately tries to win Ragnarök. So, yeah, I'd just line the Millwood knights right in with that.
Mimirs Leiche I like the ash tree thing. it further suggests my theory that the dragon is the dragon in ash lake by the great hollow. hence the dragon and the huge tree. no wonder they worshipped the earth when they lived so close to its roots.
Well.... In this case, it would be because Dark Souls pretty much stole the concept of the Norse Myth of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, as well as the dragon trying to destroy it Nidhoggr. Which the dragon will succeed at, at the end of the world; Ragnarok.
Lol, it's the little things like you showing a tree to help the viewer get an accurate representation of one in their head that makes your videos great. Keep it up man
Four names Four eyes I really don't think so... he's probably talking about Corvian's from the DLC... as in the ones that try and viciously murder you with the claws or the rapier and daggers. They quite visibly have armour on, and considering no other Corvian even comes close to looking like that, it's safe to assume it's armour.
No it's actually armor, if you look at their faces you can see that it's a mask, and that they have a sort of scaled armor, although it's skintight, wich sounds awfully painfull since it' probably made of metal, and you can just compare it to the countless naked ones wandering around.
one thing I have always found fascinating about the souls series is that you and your character think alike and you are generally part of the souls world, for example in ds2 you basically forget about your wife and kid just like your character and the player is affected by alluring skull think about it you slaughter dogs just to get them.
I now see tree references that are so symbolic in Elden Ring. It's nice to see that there is still story that continues through differing series even. I think it really helps the soulslike games to feel so connected. The community is probably better for it.
Although you're probably trolling, above a door in the carthus catacombs room where you find the chalice, there's a picture of a tree, very simmilar to the one on the cape of the millwood knights.
You know its not out of the question that they at least had a kingdom next to his or perhaps were a woodland tribe inside Wolfnirs kingdom, and his tampering with the abyss is what brought on the dragon. The only problem with that is it would mean Wolfnir did that before DS1.. (long before actually) though time is kinda screwed up... and there was a nice forest at oolaciel (yes I can't spell that name ever)
It seems the Abyss Dragon was Midir. Also going back to Dark Souls 3 after Elden Ring feels amazing. They had the idea of the Erdtree a long time before the Elden Ring.
I'm starting to see a reoccurring theme in the lore of Ariandel. How it's filled with people with sad pasts that are free to live out the rest of there days in the painting, and how Friede and Ariandel are trying to keep the painting going despite the rot to keep the people's lives there happy and give them a home. And then the player comes along to destroy it all, to save the painted world and let it begin anew, bringing fire to the painted world. It's a nice, smaller-scale version of the main conflict from the first game, or really all the games. However, I say specifically the first game since in the first game, more players chose to link the fire because Kaathe was so well hidden and ended up following Frampt's instructions. What's interesting now, is that the player character is in a bit of a role reversal. This time, the being that represents the dark in this world (Friede/Elfreide) is the one wanting to keep things going, where as the chosen hero is the one who is going to destroy it, rather than save it. I'm not entirely sure what it means the in grand scheme of things, but I think it could be a way to show you just how messed up both paths are, and to help show the player what will happen to the world should you pick the path you chose. It's quite interesting to be honest.
This story made me think back to reading 'The Giving Tree' as a child... the feels man... I'm not going to be okay for a while now... but it's the good kind of hurt. Keep rocking on, Vaati.
Coming back to this, the mill wood knights seem so similar to the viking-esk knights underground in Elden ring. Worshipping a tree and a great stag. These might’ve been their progenitors, game design wise
I will say, I love the notion that the world is quietly trying to rot away, peacefully. But the chosen undead / chosen Ashe comes in a violently forces it back
Not sure if that is the case though. Contrary to the linking of the fire, burning away the rot AND the painting with it makes way for the new world to rise. Where fire is the rot outside the painting, that which stalls its natural death, within the painting fire is that which moves the cycle forward.
Fire is what resets the cycle in the real world too. The Abyss is the rot, which you burn away by Linking the Fire. Seems pretty identical to me and makes the painting worlds' fate kind of a tragical farce, because it's all the same. You can't escape the cycle no matter what you do.
yep, but still we don't have enough information on how that happens, I know next DLC should complete DS3 lore, but I hope that would involve the previous one too.
You were talking about trees, and i was like, "wtf i cant wrap my head around that". But then, you showed that image of another tree and everything just clicked. Tyvm.
I never realized this but perhaps the Millwood are referencing Elden ring? with the importance of their tree and their horns they seem like perhaps the land they abandoned to come to the painted world might be analogous to the lands between. Not saying the games are in the same universe, but you know like Marvelous Chester from DS1 or the age of the deep sea that Aldritch saw
So basically... Millwood Knights: Hey Abyss Dragon, fuck you for destroying our homes. Abyss Dragon: Oh, its cool. Millwood Knights: Man screw this. Lets go guys. I found this painting that we can live in. Millwood Knight: Hey, that seems cool. living in a painting and all. Abyss Dragon: Oh thats cute. A painting, really? Pansies. Just keep in mind that IM the Abyss, bitch. Aint no place in Lodran where you can hide from me. You better pray to Gwyn that I dont find you again, because when I do, I'll whoop all your asses so hard, that not even swigging away at estus flasks will heal the smack down I'm about to lay on you. Millwood Knight: ... ...Ight, so apparently we need to go to Cathedral of the Deep, which is south of Lothric... Abyss Dragon: Wait, dont leave... ...Please... ...I need victims... .... Abyss Dragon: ...Hello Darkness my old friend... *Meanwhile* Millwood Knight: Guys, its the Lord Of Hollows. He looks pissed. Millwood Knights: Maybe he wants to have a civilized meeting. Here, set the dinner table, we'll treat him to- Millwood Knight: He brought a torch, and pyromancies. Millwood Knights: Damnit. Alright everyone... Grab your bows... Its THAT kind of Lord Of Hollows...
Earth should have been a new elemental property that does *physical damage* and scales with faith, just like Dark sorceries did in DS1. Also, it's counterpart should have been Frost, physical damage that scales with inteligence and adds up frostbite.
having a corrupted ethereal tree as a boss in this DLC wouldve been great, you fight something similar to the curse-rotted greatwood, but make it vastly different, and then make it phase so that we get to fight the perfect form of whatever gets held inside the tree, like we saw with the curse-rotted greatwood.
Item Description: Soul of Trigglypuff -Forlorn are those who peer into the flame, and see only pain. As the left fell into chaos and hypocrisy, the triggering became too real, and they soon found themselves in the painted world of Ariandele, where they shall stay until they are cleansed by fire. A *great* fire.
Got back from college a week ago and only just now got around to playing the DLC and watching these videos, and I gotta say that the story Millwood knights is probably one of the single best things of DS3. It's one of the stories that I actually feel sympathetic and, well, forlorn about. Kudos to you, Vaati.
Your videos are so well made! You have completely told me the story of all dark souls games! Without you I would still have no clue who some of the most important parts in dark souls like what happened to the deacons and Aldrich or the story of how pontiff Sullivan being possibly the one to have corrupted prince lothric, Irithyll of the boreal valley and the one to have helped Aldrich take power and devour gwyndolin. Thank you!
That doesn't make sense... the great hollow was already rotted in DS1, and it, along with all the other archtrees (as they are clearly called in the DS1 opening cutscene) reside in the ashen lake, NOT a forest. also, there is hardly any earth to speak of down there, it's just water in every direction as far as the eye can see, and far deeper than the eye can see. how could they be connected to the earth when the live on an oversized ocean??? Also, how could the great hollow be the great, mighty, and bountiful ethereal oak of the millwood knights if it was already rotted and dead during the first/second cycle, and DS3 takes place at the end of the 192034802975218375239484012398th or so cycle? that just doesn't make any sense even given the self-proclaimed convoluted time of the series. Also, the great dragon seen in the great hollow shows 0 signs of abyssal corruption. it's just one of the eternal dragons mentioned in the opening cutscene that survived Gwynn and Seeth's slaughter of the dragons. admittedly (if it survived the immeasurable eons between the first and last game) it could have become corrupted by the abyss somewhere in the several thousand million years between ds1 and ds3, but that seems like a huge stretch. I think it's either kalameet, or some new character yet to be introduced in the series.
I wonder now if the millwood knights and the ethereal oak are a subtle Easter egg hinting to Elden ring, kind of like how yamamura from Bloodborne his outfit resembles a bit of sekiros armor from shadows die twice
Man, really enjoyed this one. I didn't get much of the Millwood items, so I missed out on all that lore, and a mention of an "abyss dragon" just sounds so cool. Like Kalameet is the closest thing we have as of now, but...Can you imagine what a proper abyss dragon would look like?
Expanding on the possible relation between Millwood Knights and Gough: I wonder if spirit trees are connected/related to the archtrees that Gough carves the emotion ('Hello', 'Thank you', etc) carvings out of?
I thought that From Soft name dropping the Abyss Dragon was more of a hint to the next DLC, rather than a reference to Khalameet. I mean, the Abyss Dragon could very well be the DS3 equivalent of Khalameet, just like every other characters and stories that repeated themself in this world of cycles. But since everyone is hoping that the next DLC will be set in Londor... How awesome would it be for the Dark Souls franchise to end in the same place it started, the abyss, with a dragon fight ! Dragons are known to be greedy and envious for power. A dragon could have been tricked into protecting the world of Manus. I'd like to see something like that. The ashen one visiting a corrupted Londor, going further and further down, until he reaches the bottom to fight a dragon instead of the expected Kaath or Manus.
they pretty much already told us what the next dlc is gonna be based around if you go and talk to the painting girl a few times after killing friede. i forget the exact words, but it was something about Gael finding pigment for her to paint with, the dark stuff of man or something? seems fairly obvious to me that we'll end up getting it for him.
Kyle Nott But we still do not know where he will search for the pigment. The dark soul of man could be anywhere. If you consider the Ashen One to be the Chosen One too, he would theorically be the first thing that Gael would search for. And the Ashen One doesn't know where is Londor (yet). My point is, the girl mentionning Gael's quest does not give us any detail on the location of the DLC. At best, it gives us a hint towards its main subject. Everything else is still theories at this point. Even though yes, the fact that she said that comforts me in my idea that the next DLC will be in Londor.
MrQuelquDeux true... the location could be anywhere. personally i think everyone expects or wants Londor, so From will probably want to do something unexpected. an expectation creates a certain level of... well expectation. if they fail to live up to the hype people subconciously put in their minds it will be viewed as crap even if its good, just because its not what people wanted/expected from it. and if they do meet those expectations it will still be viewed as crap because thats all it is... what was expected. this creates a huge level of difficulty for them, because they absolutely HAVE to go above and beyond just to recieve the general opinion of "good", so most often devs will do something unexpected to try and circumvent that problem... which doesnt often work, but thats the most likely thing i think. that has to be the worst attempt at explaining something i've ever done.... meh xD
Kyle Nott No no, I understood, and I totally agree. That is a very valid statement ! Just like you, I would not be surprised to see them go in the opposite direction. But, there's also the fact that From Soft dropped a bit too much info on Londor for it not to be the last DLC. Because it can also create the opposite effect. Fans could be disappointed to never be able to visit that apparently iconic place in the franchise's lore. There no good way out of this situation. But I do trust From Soft. I'm 100% sure they'll do the best they can to give us a good DLC, no matter what decision they take.
I don't think the Abyss Dragon would be Kalameet. He fits the description, but we killed his ass. Killed it stone dead. I'm hoping we're going to MEET the Abyss Dragon in the second DLC. After all, Uncle Gael's next task is to find the Dark Soul of man. And we all know what tends to happen around shards of Manus. The Abyss Dragon could be another piece of the Pygmy, or perhaps something else related to the Dark Soul.
Well, we also killed Ornstein and Smough, but Ornstein is said to have left the cathedral and Smough is described as being the final guardian of the cathedral. There's definitely a disconnect from DS1 at points.
Twilight Leviathan Don't forget that Gwyndolin could create illusions. After the DS3 revelations about them, I've always assumed that we never actually fought Oreo and S'Mores.
Giltia But who's to say illusory OnS would actually be the formidable battle they were? Plus as Dusty said, Gwyndolin survived DS1 and was an optional boss, Kalameet is also optional.
Giltia I think that the dragon is the dragon in ash lake by the great hollow. hence the dragon and the huge tree. no wonder they worshipped the earth when they lived so close to its roots.
I think it should also be noted that the ability of the Quakestone Hammer is identical to the natural ability of the Stone Guardians of Oolacile, and, another thing that I'm sure has nothing to do with the other, but the Chaos Shield and Ethereal Oak shield have an identical shape and similar curvatures, although only slightly, and I thought I'd bring it up just cause. But, if they do have something to do with each other somehow, I'd like to take note of the Chaos Shields connection with Chaos, and by definition, the Bed of Chaos, a burning tree, and how the Ethereal Oak shield was made in reverence of a tree. Probably no lore connections there, and more likely a thematic similarity, but still cool to think about.
I think the Abyss dragon is just how it sounds. I don't think we can say, for certain, that Kalameet spews abyssal fire as the Serpent Mages use the same colored 'fire' for their magic. I think that's just how the souls of Dragons work. Personally, I think the Abyss dragon is the root of all the Pus of Man we see.
draconic33 I think it's that dragon in ash lake by the great hollow. hence the dragon and the huge tree. no wonder they worshipped the earth when they lived so close to its roots.
I really think that's a stretch. There is nothing Abyssal about the Ancient Dragon of Ash Lake. It's an ancient dragon, it existed before the abyss. Furthermore, there is nothing to suggest that Arch Trees and Spirit Trees are the same. Likewise I Agree with Draconic that Kalameet is probably not the Abyssal Dragon either. It's tempting to see everything as a throwback or reference, but probably not all that accurate.
I really liked Vaati's idea that it C O U L D maybe be Kaathe, let's think about this for a second; -Serpents are imperfect dragons, but no lore says that a serpent is doomed to stay imperfect. -Kaathe does live in the Abyss and has S T R O N G connections to it. -Which serpent/abyss creature did we hear of in dark souls 3 almost strictly? Yup. Kaathe. So to ME (its all theory and speculation, i'm not trying to make a case or shit on anyone's theory on this), it WOULD make sense to me that with the rise of Londor, the Sable Church and all those hollow dark abyss shenanigans, Kaathe ascended to being a full on dragon. There's no mention of him still being a serpent in DS3 either, if i'm not wrong. He's just referred to by Yuria, by his name, and that's about it. Also, how fucking cool would it be that you enter a boss room in the upcoming DLC and you just see the lifebar saying "Abyss Dragon Kaathe"? I would personally set myself ablaze in happiness and die, not gonna lie. It's a stretch, but a stretch that could make sense. I think we've learned now that Miyazaki knows EXACTLY where loose ends are and which to tie together, even some we didnt even notice were loose. For instance, the mistress of the Painted World that wields a great scythe, we all thought that was Priscilla. It still COULD be, but... I mean... I MEAN. Anyway, sorry for rambling!
Serpents are imperfect dragons. They have ties to the Undead and the Darksign as we have learned based on the serpent ring items. If anything serpents are linked to the abyss but cannot be dragons. I like the thought process that as Chaos is to Fire, Abyss is to Dark(Humanity). As in the Abyss is effectively a more 'extreme' version of Dark. Personally, I feel the only way a Serpent can become a Dragon is by some form of metamorphosis around the end of the Age of Dark that would bring about a new Ancient Age where serpents would transform into dragons. This becomes partially supported by the dragon torso and head stones (turning humans that are linked to Dark in to dragons, maybe there's something similar for a serpent to Dragons?)
***** omg perhaps kaathe is a dragon! Those statues in lothric of a primordial serpant. they have wings don't they... I also just searched for a definition of dragon in Google and it doesn't even say dragons have to fly or anything. Also it could be a "fierce and intimidating women" but maybe not.
remembrer the Arch Trees are homes of the Ancient Dragons which the Witches of Izalith burn down? the Ethereal Oak might be one of the Untouched Arch Trees it would make alot of sense for a Ancient Dragons try looking for a Arch Tree and make himself a home. or even better. the Ethereal Oak would be the home of this dragon befor the millwoodknight arrival.and this Abbys Dragon is just taking his home back.
Nope it's that dragon in ash lake by the great hollow. hence the dragon and the huge tree. no wonder they worshipped the earth when they lived so close to its roots.
The Mirrah Chain Mail also has a stag in it, a stag in a blue field to be more exact, and considering that only the most noble of knights wear it (an exception being Creighton) the symbol of the stag seems to be really important to them, is Mirrah related to Milwood?
Why are all the paintings referred to as 'cold and gentle'? Sure they are cold but are they using the usual use of the term 'gentle' or am I just missing out on something because they dont seem gentle places at all to me.
Loco The paintings are usually a refuge for those cast out from the world, typically by the gods or those serving them. The PC isn't one of those and is usually a massive threat, seeing as you can optionally kill the guardians of said worlds, Priscilla and Frieda. it's less they aren't nice places it's more that the chosen undead isn't a nice person.
Well, yeah, the world doesn't seem gentle to you because you are the reason it is not gentle anymore. It was a nice place for people living there, then the player enters, starts a mudering rampage, destroys everything in his path, the world itself and its guardians included, and then leaves. Of course people in there are not going to be nice to you. :/
I see, that actually does make more sense, I guess as the player you dont see yourself as the 'intruder' of sorts. I love the ambiguity of the souls lore but at the same time I just wish you could have answers to all the questions, I really want to more about the paintings, i'd love to visit more but sadly probably not enough DLC planned out for us to visit a painted world again.
Very unlikely in my opinion. Midir isnt a dragon who is inherently „abysmal“, he was raised by the gods to battle the abyss for all eternity, hence the name „Darkeater Midir“. Kalameet on the other hand, fits this description far better, since he spews dark flames and is found in a land consumed by the abyss :D
I really liked the inclusion of these characters and all their lore. I hope we get to see more of them in the future somewhere, perhaps a little throwback in Elden Ring? They look like they would fit in that game.
The first thing that I thought when I readed the descriptions of this knights was that this people lived in the tree in Blightown and the dragon was the Eternal Dragon in the Ash Lake. It's close to New Londo and could be the place of the new dlc if they made something about Londor, but all of this is most probably wrong...
unless The Great Hollow died after, it could be a bountiful tree that became hollow, in this process maybe corrupt the Eternal Dragon too, and he became the Abyss Dragon
Cástelor i love hearing different theories but i really wish people would think things like this through... 1. the tree is already dead. the dragon is not corrupt, maybe even also dead. the knights are already not there. 2. the painting they are in has not even been made. instead there is a different painting they would have been in (which they arent) 3. there is water and sand (ash) as far as the eye can see. no earth to be found ANYWHERE. they WORSHIP earth. 4. the Archtrees and the spirit trees by all appearances are different things. there is nothing to suggest they are the same thing, and evidence to say they are not the same thing. there are more holes in this "theory" but i would be here all day. give it a rest, they arent from the ash LAKE!!! no matter how hard you try. there's more holes here than then a corrupted worm eaten tree.
well, in my theory they could live in blightown before it becomes shit, not the ash lake, they aren't in the painted world because they are wandering the world. I know that are a lot of holes and that is probably wrong, I just said that was my first thoughts when I started to read the descriptions
The Millwood's Quakestone Hammer weapon art also *greatly* resembles an attack used by the guardians in Oolacile. Slam the earth, then rip up a cloud of rock and dirt. More fuel for that particular theory.
Yeah, I don't buy into Abyss Dragon = Kalameet. It doesn't make any sense. The events of Millwood would need to have happened a loooooooong-ass time ago just to fit in with the basic Dark Souls 1 timeline. And if they went straight into the Painted World, we didn't see a hint of them in Ariamis' world. If somehow there are multiple Painted Worlds and Ariamis' painting is different than Ariandel's, sure, I guess that would explain their absence. Except the whole "burning the world away to make way for the next one" the Corvian NPC talks about seems to imply the inhabitants are also burnt away. So then it still doesn't make sense for Millwood to be connected to Kalameet. Unless the knights just wandered around the world for [however many cycles of firelinking has occured] and just *happened* to find Ariandel's world fairly recently. All that makes me really think the Abyss Dragon must be something totally new and unrelated to previous lore/knowledge, since Kalameet was the only real dragon we know of that would fit the description.
Dorian Grayniac I think it's that dragon in ash lake by the great hollow. hence the dragon and the huge tree. no wonder they worshipped the earth when they lived so close to its roots.
I think he is talking about the cycles. How the lord souls are reincarnated over and over again when someone links the flame with the souls. In a way, it can be possible that there is something based off of Kalameet's soul that is reincarnated into the cycle. If we go by that speculation, then it is possible that the millwood knight's sworn enemy is kalameet reincarnated into an abyssal dragon of their time. I really like the connection or similarity Vaati brought it with Gough!
Fo3AR that it true but all instances of time distortions are displayed by phantoms. there is still a natural progression of time in dark souls, and when something dies for good (not all that many instances since pretty much everything we meet is some form of undead) its gone. yes it can still be in a future or past time, but as a phantom. there is no mention of a phantom dragon, the millwood knights are definitely not phantoms, and the painting is not living so could not be a phantom (unless you want to be really weird, in which case nothing will ever make sense). maybe i'm asking too imposing logic on dark souls, but since everything so far has followed the same rules i dont think its too much to assume that new stuff also follows these rules.

Actually, you kind of help them. The painted worlds burn away and a new one is made for them, so I think it's GOOD for them to burn away...

+First Name Last Name Nah I noticed it too, I think it's one of those symbolic similarities that are so core to souls
So they're viking zealots of dead Yggdrasil.
It all makes sense now
Well what happened to the nine worlds then?
That’s pretty metal, really
I still consider Kalameet the abyss dragon that attacked Millwood. Midir is said to be put in the ringed city to make sure no one gets in or out. Why would he leave it to fight a forest? And Kalameet has a track record of terrorizing the woods of forests.
So with the ring city out could the abyss dragon be midir
could?
It might but why would he do that if he’s fighting the dark and protecting the ringed city
Chonk Chonker maybe because the milwood tree got rotten by dark or the abyss and then midir seeks it out and destroy the whole civilization to contain it?
Hmmm fair point but wouldn’t the the people who live in the tree know it has the dark all up in it
Actually it’s speculated to be kalameet.
So we're the bad guy? burning their home after they travelled so far to reach a new one?
We're always the bad guy to someone or other
Pretty much.
Ask veit ek standa; Heitir Yggdrasill.
the origin is norse and the stag might be Dain who ate Yggdrasils leaves
Why is Dark Soul lore so badass and mystic and awesome?
because its on this channel man
Well.... In this case, it would be because Dark Souls pretty much stole the concept of the Norse Myth of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, as well as the dragon trying to destroy it Nidhoggr.
Which the dragon will succeed at, at the end of the world; Ragnarok.
MadHatterHimself can you stop with your analysis and just appreciate how well they created the atmosphere and lore of the dlc?
Heavy Sword - Sure, that wasn't the question, but sure.
It's convoluted, pathetic and it stinks!

Lol, it's the little things like you showing a tree to help the viewer get an accurate representation of one in their head that makes your videos great. Keep it up man
Ah yes, the Millwood Knights, they'll leave the Painted World now. The shattering of the Elden Ring has called all Tarnished home.
And man are they gonna be pumped when they see that tree
Am I the only one that wants the corvinan knights armor as a set?
Cole Viloria I'm fairly certain that their "armor" is actually just their naked bodies.
I assume if they did it would resemble the Crowfeather Garb from BB, which would only trigger a ton of complaints from players.
No it's actually armor, if you look at their faces you can see that it's a mask, and that they have a sort of scaled armor, although it's skintight, wich sounds awfully painfull since it' probably made of metal, and you can just compare it to the countless naked ones wandering around.
have you noticed it is the outrider knight armor but black and deformed?
My love for Dark Souls is like a truck.

one thing I have always found fascinating about the souls series is that you and your character think alike and you are generally part of the souls world, for example in ds2 you basically forget about your wife and kid just like your character and the player is affected by alluring skull think about it you slaughter dogs just to get them.
I now see tree references that are so symbolic in Elden Ring. It's nice to see that there is still story that continues through differing series even. I think it really helps the soulslike games to feel so connected. The community is probably better for it.
Wolnir is their king and Wolnir is also a descendant of Vamos. Trust me, my father works at Nintendo.
Keep saying bullshit like that and i will personaly hack your Nintendo 64 account
Although you're probably trolling, above a door in the carthus catacombs room where you find the chalice, there's a picture of a tree, very simmilar to the one on the cape of the millwood knights.
I bet his password is the Konami code
You know its not out of the question that they at least had a kingdom next to his or perhaps were a woodland tribe inside Wolfnirs kingdom, and his tampering with the abyss is what brought on the dragon. The only problem with that is it would mean Wolfnir did that before DS1.. (long before actually) though time is kinda screwed up... and there was a nice forest at oolaciel (yes I can't spell that name ever)
Pidgeon Scythe actually maybe it was wolnir he is a tyrant and has to do with abyss !!
It seems the Abyss Dragon was Midir.
Also going back to Dark Souls 3 after Elden Ring feels amazing. They had the idea of the Erdtree a long time before the Elden Ring.
Not being pushy, jut wondering when prepare to cry is coming?
I'm rendering and uploading it tonight! It'll likely be next weeks video.
sweet!
VaatiVidya keep up ur work man ,Ill always love u
very nice desu senpai
good shit take time
I'm starting to see a reoccurring theme in the lore of Ariandel.
You can't escape the cycle no matter what you do.
well, actually every one but Friede originally wants the world to burn. They don't like rotting away
Only the fire in the painted world doenst 'reset' the world, it makes it so a new one can rise. Thats a fundemental difference.
yep, but still we don't have enough information on how that happens, I know next DLC should complete DS3 lore, but I hope that would involve the previous one too.
*Meanwhile*
Millwood Knight: Guys, its the Lord Of Hollows. He looks pissed.
Millwood Knights: Maybe he wants to have a civilized meeting. Here, set the dinner table, we'll treat him to-
Millwood Knight: He brought a torch, and pyromancies.
Millwood Knights: Damnit. Alright everyone... Grab your bows... Its THAT kind of Lord Of Hollows...
BoltOfMight pure gold

Wow nerd
Earth should have been a new elemental property that does *physical damage* and scales with faith, just like Dark sorceries did in DS1. Also, it's counterpart should have been Frost, physical damage that scales with inteligence and adds up frostbite.
Been loving the way you transition into your reading to the dialogue at the end. It gave me the shivers, really well done!
having a corrupted ethereal tree as a boss in this DLC wouldve been great, you fight something similar to the curse-rotted greatwood, but make it vastly different, and then make it phase so that we get to fight the perfect form of whatever gets held inside the tree, like we saw with the curse-rotted greatwood.
YES! This should've been in the DLC
Meanwhile, 5-6 years later:
“The entire society of this game is based of a huge tree”
Welcome to Elden Ring

still don't understand how people can dare to dislike such amazing content.. every video is more and more stunning, keep on doing mate!;)
Painting of Ariandel is where those fleeing the Donald venture... alone, abandoned
We're going to need a bigger painting

Item Description: Soul of Trigglypuff
-Forlorn are those who peer into the flame, and see only pain.
Their tree looks alot like an elden ring ethereal trees now that we got to see it.
I know that this video was created before the TRC DLC, but Darkeater Midir also fits the abyss dragon category.
Thank you!
Abyss dragon could also reference the dragon from the ringed city
a dragon and a great tree = great hollow and ancient dragon covenant confirmed
I wonder now if the millwood knights and the ethereal oak are a subtle Easter egg hinting to Elden ring, kind of like how yamamura from
Bloodborne his outfit resembles a bit of sekiros armor from shadows die twice
That normal tree really helped me visualize an actual spirit tree.
Rewatched this to see how much of the Millwood knights lore lines up with Elden Ring and I was not disapointed
MrQuelquDeux
true... the location could be anywhere.
personally i think everyone expects or wants Londor, so From will probably want to do something unexpected. an expectation creates a certain level of... well expectation. if they fail to live up to the hype people subconciously put in their minds it will be viewed as crap even if its good, just because its not what people wanted/expected from it. and if they do meet those expectations it will still be viewed as crap because thats all it is... what was expected. this creates a huge level of difficulty for them, because they absolutely HAVE to go above and beyond just to recieve the general opinion of "good", so most often devs will do something unexpected to try and circumvent that problem... which doesnt often work, but thats the most likely thing i think.
that has to be the worst attempt at explaining something i've ever done....
Well, you predicted Midir pretty well. Congratulations.
Hey man, just wanted to say: You're the reason why I love Dark Souls series so much! Amazing work!
Giltia We also killed Ornstein, and most of us killed Gwyndolin. You could argue that Gwyndolin was optional, but then again...so was Kalameet.
I LOVE how you end a couple videos with "fire for ariandel"...so fitting
Love when I see a new video is uploaded , hate when it's only a few minutes long but still love it regardless
Lord Emberpants lore when?
he said he won't do it in the finale of the edwad series as edwad didn't link the fire.
Jeez although it was short it still packed a LOT of juicy lore! Great job and gl with ur next vid- ik pretty hype to find out more broXD
1:58 Warning: This is not a tree.
And it's happened Vaati. When I listen to you, I can almost hear Edwad in my head.
I am soooo excited for the corvian episode. Been wandering around the base game content looking in to them since dlc launch.
I really liked Vaati's idea that it C O U L D maybe be Kaathe, let's think about this for a second;
-Serpents are imperfect dragons, but no lore says that a serpent is doomed to stay imperfect.
Now we know that Midir is an abyssal dragon. Maybe Midir went rampant?
Is the Millwood's sworn enemy the dragon of calamity, or is it Midir? Idk if you answer this in a later vid, but I'm curious
I just want to thank you for being so dedicated to the souls series, your videos enhance my souls-experience. Have a good day, Vaats.
remembrer the Arch Trees are homes of the Ancient Dragons which the Witches of Izalith burn down? the Ethereal Oak might be one of the Untouched Arch Trees it would make alot of sense for a Ancient Dragons try looking for a Arch Tree and make himself a home. or even better. the Ethereal Oak would be the home of this dragon befor the millwoodknight arrival.and this Abbys Dragon is just taking his home back.
Nope it's that dragon in ash lake by the great hollow. hence the dragon and the huge tree. no wonder they worshipped the earth when they lived so close to its roots.
mayb that dragon when out for a vacation and when he come back all tanned up there is a bunch of nords in his tree house.
2:00 ethereal trees from another world? From the Lands between? 😉
The Mirrah Chain Mail also has a stag in it, a stag in a blue field to be more exact, and considering that only the most noble of knights wear it (an exception being Creighton) the symbol of the stag seems to be really important to them, is Mirrah related to Milwood?
With the Ringed City DLC, could it also be possible that Midir is the Abyss Dragon mentioned in the great-bows?
Dude this seems like it's going to tie into elden ring...
Coming back to your old videos after so long and completely forgot about these guys.
This sound like the ancestral followers to you too?
1:57- Heard you like looking at trees. So we got you a tree to look at while you think of visualizing another tree.
Could Midir be the “abyss dragon”?
Very unlikely in my opinion. Midir isnt a dragon who is inherently „abysmal“, he was raised by the gods to battle the abyss for all eternity, hence the name „Darkeater Midir“. Kalameet on the other hand, fits this description far better, since he spews dark flames and is found in a land consumed by the abyss :D
With The Ringed City out, that abyss dragon could be Midir
so have we come to the conclusion that the dragon that destroyed the millwood forests and brought ruin to their civilization was Midir?
I really liked the inclusion of these characters and all their lore. I hope we get to see more of them in the future somewhere, perhaps a little throwback in Elden Ring? They look like they would fit in that game.
The first thing that I thought when I readed the descriptions of this knights was that this people lived in the tree in Blightown and the dragon was the Eternal Dragon in the Ash Lake. It's close to New Londo and could be the place of the new dlc if they made something about Londor, but all of this is most probably wrong...
Cástelor that's what I thought
The great hollow itself is a dead arch tree. I don't think it fits the description of "bountiful tree" of Milwood forest.
unless The Great Hollow died after, it could be a bountiful tree that became hollow, in this process maybe corrupt the Eternal Dragon too, and he became the Abyss Dragon
Cástelor
i love hearing different theories but i really wish people would think things like this through...
1. the tree is already dead. the dragon is not corrupt, maybe even also dead. the knights are already not there.
2. the painting they are in has not even been made. instead there is a different painting they would have been in (which they arent)
3. there is water and sand (ash) as far as the eye can see. no earth to be found ANYWHERE. they WORSHIP earth.
4. the Archtrees and the spirit trees by all appearances are different things. there is nothing to suggest they are the same thing, and evidence to say they are not the same thing.
there are more holes in this "theory" but i would be here all day. give it a rest, they arent from the ash LAKE!!! no matter how hard you try. there's more holes here than then a corrupted worm eaten tree.
well, in my theory they could live in blightown before it becomes shit, not the ash lake, they aren't in the painted world because they are wandering the world.
I know that are a lot of holes and that is probably wrong, I just said that was my first thoughts when I started to read the descriptions
These guys came from the Lands Between. Those are Erdtrees on their equipment.
Where is that lady maria prepare to cry that you promised? anyway, nice video as always
amazing video as always, you have a great skill of story (lore) telling man !
hey vaati, can you add in what music you used in the description? i'd really like to look it up.
perfect timing just got back from school and I'm welcomed by a new video cheers vaati
Absolutely love your videos and I watch every lore vid. But I roll my eyes at every edgy opening that you do
The Millwood's Quakestone Hammer weapon art also *greatly* resembles an attack used by the guardians in Oolacile.
Aidan the mothman That wouldn't make sense, that Dragon wasn't an abyss dragon.
I can see the points you brought up, but... I mean...
Time is all kinds of fucked up in Dark Souls
Fo3AR
that it true but all instances of time distortions are displayed by phantoms. there is still a natural progression of time in dark souls, and when something dies for good (not all that many instances since pretty much everything we meet is some form of undead) its gone. yes it can still be in a future or past time, but as a phantom. there is no mention of a phantom dragon, the millwood knights are definitely not phantoms, and the painting is not living so could not be a phantom (unless you want to be really weird, in which case nothing will ever make sense). maybe i'm asking too imposing logic on dark souls, but since everything so far has followed the same rules i dont think its too much to assume that new stuff also follows these rules.
2:14 Spirit trees are one of the kindest beings on this world
Some overgrownth weed with ballsacks: Am I a joke to you?
What happened to your Episode 2 for the NPC quests?
2:45 Vaati: They're very selfless and noble beings.
My Ashen One, slashing at the Greatwood pustules: I disagree.
Alright, I read the description already but I NEED to know the name of the music you used for this. Like, all of it.
+Drakatha1337 I'll try remember to add them all one of these days
Please and thank you. Keep up the amazing work.
was just looking through the comments for the names...patience is a virtue
Now, what if the Abyss Dragon was none other than *Midir*, imagine an all-out-war between the Millwood Knights and the Ringed City.
Now that we know of Midir, could it have been him ?
for a few videos now you make us unkindled ash look bad for doing our duty of bringing fire.
But you must realize, we're the cruelest SOB of them all.
Yo, Vaddy, what happened to the lore video?
Do we ever get a video on Edwad?
Well the abyss dragon, now with the Ringed City DLC could be Midir
Could the Abyss dragon be Midir?
Given that Millwood was a society of knights who didn't worship fire, there's a distinct possibility Midir would've been used to clean up heretics.
I've noticed that some of the strongest enemies have the saddest back storys
