I have a 2012 TDI and return 37-38 mpg combined. I do mostly highway driving (70 mph) with a fair amount of in town driving as well. Love my Jetta!

I had a 2000 VW jetta diesel. I will not exaggerate on the statements I'm about to share. I commute every Sunday night from Phoenix az. To southern calif. 405.6 miles from my door to my office. I constantly drive at 79 mph. Not much traffic. Cruise control always. With the strongest head wind ever, all freeway lanes on I 10 covered with sand my lowest tank has been 40.3 normal jet stream wind 43 mpg. No wind, 47.3 . One time I took one for the team. 65 mph the entire trip. Right lane, semi trucks going around me. 68.7 mpg. Pretty impressive. Interesting I can do that much better at 65 than at 79 mph. My tdi is a 5 speed manual. Sold it to an employee with 324,000 miles on it.

Trevor Thayer timing belts on all Vws cost about $900.00 so that's a bit expensive compared to around 300 for Asian cars, but other than that just normal maintainance and oil changes every 7500 miles

i just came from Europe and drove citroen cars, bmw and merc. i swear did now they are diesel and did not ask cus i was in a hurry. i went all over and drove crazily in germany in terms of going fast. i also drove slowly on either city and some highways to enjoy the scene there. i can't imagine how refine these cars and how interesting they are. i would prefer them cus i stays for a week on my crazy driving and the meter did not reach the half. i am so impressed with European cars in how refine they are and how amazing the 1.6 and 2 L engines are. it is a new era for me. also, almost one year ago i was in nj and ny and i was filling gas crazily almost every two days with way less driving than what i did in Eourpe. i am so so amazed with the new Diesel cars. it is way better than hybrids for one good reason.... i can go fast and drive all over and still the tank full!!!!!!!!! AMAZING smart people out there.

I recently purchased a 2015 VW Jetta TDI SEL. My last VW TDI was a 2011. Oh what a difference!! This car and engine is so much nicer than my previous TDI which I would categorize as a POS. I have had numerous TDI's. My first was in the early 80's when the horsepower rating was 50. Just prior to my purchase, I first test drove a 2015 Golf TDI automatic but did not like the way my right lower leg rubbed against the center console. I found it to be very uncomfortable in just a few miles. The center console on the Jetta was not a problem.
VW has finally got the Jetta TDI right. This car is leaps and bounds superior to the 2011. It flat out gets up and goes with no noticeable lag when first taking off. I inadvertently spun the front tires out of an intersection. You need to test drive one. Warning, if you are driving an older VW TDI, you will want a 2015 VW Jetta TDI. This guy is quicker, more powerful, better fuel economy, better ride, and a lot more luxurious. The only thing I did not like was the price I had to pay for it because I purchased the SEL with all the additional options. Oh well, I my as well enjoy what I am driving. This vehicle has collision avoidance warning, blind spot monitoring and backup sensor and backup camera. I have a 2013 Lexus RX350 and find myself wanting to drive the Jetta more. Maybe because it is so much more fuel efficient and fun to drive.

That's what I'm talking about! You just inspired me more to buy a TDI Jetta with manual trans! Have you had any problems? Ever broke down or expensive maintenance or unexpected repair bills? Do you do your own maintenance or take it to dealer? How much does that cost on average? Thank you Zac. I'm looking at buying a Jetta TDI with manual trans for a delivery car! Long idle times, short trips, little traffic!

MrThat70svan With my aggressive driving I had issues with the 5sp, but haven't had a lick of trouble with 6sp, but I had a billet limited slip installed so I should be fine. Not exactly sure if your going to feel the benefit of a diesel with short trips and long idling as diesels love to just cruise and sip fuel.

i do a TON of long distance driving with my 1998 MK3 Jetta TDI. it's a 5-speed and was literally owned by a little old lady.
I have changed out the suspension to Koni Str-t struts and H&R OE Sport springs, new timing belt and water pump, new alternator, new turbo lines, manifold/EGR cleaned, all new filters, new tires and some luxury items such as a new stereo and tinted windows and a Thule roof rack. I consistently get 53 mpg on the HWY and 43/45 city.

I put 44k on a 2013 Passat TDI from 01/13 to August of this year when I traded for a new GLI. I loved my TDI and the Passat. I'm a truck guy, but VW has made a believer out of me. I'm actually contemplating picking up 15 Jetta TDI due to the number of miles I drive.
In the year and a half that I owned my Passat, city driving netted me around 37mpg and highway would vary between 48-56 depending on the road, winds and the weight of my foot that day.

From Phoenix, AZ. I own a 2014 Jetta TDI, my driving is a combo of 80% side streets (35-45mph) and 20% Highway (65-80mph) I find an optimal speed in which I get the best mpg is 45-55mph returning an average of 42mpg! Even on some rare occasions when it is not so hot and the ac is off Ive seen a trip average of 56mpg!

I drive a 2011 Jetta TDI sedan with the DSG, and I average around 39 mpg in suburban driving outside of Charlotte, NC. In pure city driving, I get around 28-31 and on the interstate I get right around 50 mpg. I find the most efficient driving to be on country roads around 50 mph, getting about 55 mpg.

My commute consists of driving from Rancho Cucamonga, CA to North Hollywood 3-5 times a week, and the rest is around town, with the occasional weekend trip to the Peterson, Cars and Coffee, SuperCar Sunday etc.
My average MPG to date is 44 MPG, so

If I were picking up a Diesel, I think I would be going with one from Mercedes-Benz. I think they have the refinement part down a little better than VW.
Who do you think has the best diesel engines (in terms of power, economy, noise/feel).

Exactly, that's why he's awesome, he keeps us interested and you know that what he's sayng comes from passion and investigation not from a 3 hour amateur internet only investigated script. I know the diesel question wasn't for me but i think it'd be a toss-up between BMW's 3.0 Liter TwinPower Turbo Diesel straight six and VW group's 3.0 Liter TDi V6 used by VW, Audi and Porsche. Somehow others not even Mercedes Benz who are diesel engine pioneers and advocates seem to get rid of clatter.

Fer Pareja I had a 2011 BMW 335d that I had to sell while under warranty. Be careful of the new emission system, it was at the dealer most of the times with all kinds of emission sensor issues. My father in laws Mercedes E320 Bluetec V6 3.0 Diesel 2009 with a little over 100k kms [60k miles] barely out of warranty had DPF [Diesel particulate filter] completely clogged, $3500 to fix parts and labor at independent mechanic at dealer it would be upwards of $6000. Have never had such issues with VW or Audi diesels, trust when I say we have a lot of diesels in our family. My A3 has over 100000 miles on it. Just sharing real experience not affiliated with any of these companies.

'13 Passat TDI. General commute BS (not like the BS you might find in the pasture on this video) the car does about 35 mpg without even trying to get mpg's. Took it on a vacation trip last summer for about 1000 miles and it averaged 46 mpg even while cruising most of the way on interstate at 78 MPH and that is no BS. Great car and engine. Well, I have a marvelous VW Beetle 1.9L TDI pumpe-düse, my driving is a combination of 60% City (37mph) and 40% Highway (45-60mph) I have done a 630 miles trip, still had a half tank of fuel remaining! (please note: I've noticed the 1.9L TDI pumpe-düse will do a very conservative 650 mile on one tank with 14.5 gallons) Cheers! :-)
"While diesel cars are available in many countries around the world, Volkswagen has been the only manufacturer selling diesel cars in Canada or the US (other than the Mercedes E320 CDI starting at $52,000US). Sometimes the TDI is considered a "niche" product and I've venture to guess that is one reason there is such a unique crowd of members. Where else can you say economy and performance in the same sentence? With this economy, one can also get great range. While not typical, here is an example of someone getting 1400 miles (2254km) on one tank of diesel.
There are three main generations of TDI's found in North America. The first generation was available till 2004 used a distributor-type fuel pump and are designated VE engines and were 1.9l in size. After that VW introduced the Pumpe-Düse (unit injector) engines (PD for short) that were sold in Canada and the US from 2004 till 2006. The third and latest generation of TDI engines which finally arrived in 2008 are common rail and call a 'Clean Diesel'. As you can see there was a bit of a hiatus on the avialability of TDI's during 2007 which was due to changes in US and Canadian emission regulations.
The PD found in the New Beetles, Jettas, and Golfs are rated at 100hp and 177ft.lbs torque from a 1.9l engine. The B5 Passat with it's 2.0l TDI pumped out 134 hp and 247 ft.lbs of torque. The king of power is the 5.0l 310HP V10 Touareg that puts out 553 ft.lbs of torque.
Demand for TDIs is extremely high. An example is in 2005 Canadian sales of TDIs accounted for over 50% of models where a TDI was an option. Another example is in 2006 the Jetta wagon was ONLY available as a TDI, they didn't even bother with other engine types."
    Cheers! :-)

Thanks for the article/video…….have been buying and driving Jetta TDI's for the last 15 years and have become a loyal Diesel enthusiast. Average 43mpg with my 2010 Jetta TDI, mostly highway miles. Love the torque, the nimble handling, and the economy……dislike the quirky DSG trans. Very nervous and jerky when downshifting and in low speed situations. When the big change came in 2011, I totally rebelled against VW and swore I would not buy another VW TDI unless they upgraded the interior trim levels and restored the suspension system to something more worthy of it's German heritage. I refuse to drive a Camry with a VW badge!! Looks like they did something with the quality of the interior trim for 2015 which is good….now if they act on the suspension I might be a fan of VW again……until then I am looking elsewhere. Curious to see what Mazda does with it's Diesel if it ever gets to the States…..

MotoMan...just watched one of your videos for the first time...I enjoyed it and will watch more.
    Comment...
You BARELY mentioned the torque numbers (esp when you talked about the history of diesels)...instead you talked almost exclusively of horse power.
    One suggestion...
I think talking almost exclusively in horse power numbers does a HUGE dis-service to ALL automobile engines, but esp to diesels, as it's TORQUE that we all drive everyday...it's TORQUE that we feel as we accelerate...and diesels EXCEL in the torque department.
I had a 1997 Passat TDI (that I also converted to run on used vegetable oil), and that little 1.9L engine would PULL from very low RPM's (1500)...that was torque of course...the torque from that little engine would put to shame even much larger gasoline engines. I could pull a 2500 pound trailer up a long hill on the interstate at 75mph (and 6000 feet above sea level) and the Passat's 1.9L engine maintained speed like the trailer wasn't there.
Diesels have had a tough time in the U.S for a number of reasons, but one, for sure, is that Americans have been conditioned to think of "power" only in terms of horsepower, and, when diesel horsepower numbers are talked about, many Americans turn away because those numbers have typically sounded anemic.
Anyway...please help to educate folks that it's TORQUE that matters when you drive a car, and diesels have a LOT of it, while also obtaining huge MPG numbers (which we really need as a planet)..

    • @MotoManTV

First off, TOTALLY agree with you . . . in the Diesel world, it is ALL about Torque . . . If you go through our back catalog, you will see A LOT of Diesel films (can you say addiction) and in ALL of those I beat on the concept of torque so much, let's just say that I am in no fear of ever becoming a horse whisperer . . . That said, the point I was harping on here was the build strategy of this new engine family. The interchangeability of parts between different engine sizes and how the new engine performs. So, yes, I do throw in the torque number there at the beginning but the specific point of this film was something more than my usual blabbering on about Torque and converting the Prius faithful to diesel . . . Thanks for watching and reaching out . . .

Just painful to watch... Americans have no clue how to drive diesels, I mean the guy was reving the engine at 3000 rpm when he was driving normally. Drive it under 2000 rpm and you will get consumption of less than 5 l/100 km - 65 mpg plus you won't hear the engine at all.

Londons Finest Yeah, that's true too. I've seen his review of the Mk7 Golf R and it was pretty much the same story.

Nice generalization. Act like everyone in the EU can drive manual perfectly and I've seen a lot that can't. Not only that, we'll never get 65mpg because you don't realize that mpg in the US and some other countries is different measurement to the EU measurement of mpg

      You're talking about imperial mpg

      @MrMikeDao 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Londons Finest Yeah the majority of America don't drive manual and it's not that they're bad at it. It's more of, since it's the norm to have an automatic then no need for a manual. Not their fault I have both honestly. You guys also have high insurance rates as well based on types of cars.

I would have liked to learn more about the car itself, like mpg, features, and more. You spent way too much time relating it to the GLI, when this is a completely different animal because its diesel.

This video has some incorrect facts. Vanagon's never came with a 1.9 N/A or turbo diesel. At least not in the US to my knowledge. Very rarely did they come with a 1.6 N/A and 1.6 TD IDI diesel. Originally Rabbits came with a 1.5 diesel that had the same horsepower as the 1.6 that came later, only difference between the two was the cylinder head had better support between the valves in the 1.6 (1.5 diesels were prone to cracking between valves). So it went from 1.5l to 1.6l (N/A and rarely ECO diesel) later in the 70's, and VW kept the 1.6 throughout the second generation of Golf and Jetta. The third generation of Golf and Jetta introduced the 1.9 TDI, which was the first direct injected diesel engine that had 90bhp. The 4th gen kept the same 1.9 TDI, and later in the generation bumped it to 110bhp. 5th generation of Golf and Jetta kept the same 1.9 TDI 110bhp. Sixth generation was the introduction into the 2.0 TDI. As far as I know the US never got the 1.9 N/A. Canada got it, but not the US. It's a very common swap for people who want more power in their older diesel VW's. Great video none the less. Love the approach to a car review. Very refreshing.

You made some mistakes here... The 90HP... it was in the 1.9 liter and then was bumped up to 100HP, still a 1.9 liter. 2.0 liter then went to 140. Now for 2015, 150HP.

      And because you asked: 2000 1.9 5M 40/50MPG. 2014 2.0 6M 40/50 MPG :)

firstname lastname You clearly have zero idea of what you're talking about.
VW resale prices drop 13 to 20%
      VW CEO resigns
Resale values on Volkswagen's diesel cars in the U.S. have taken hits in all models not just the faulty diesel .
Facts are on my side and the VW problem is worldwide.
I no longer own a VW as there are better values in the market place.
Clearly VW was cheating for many years by intent.

Diesel in the US: Strike one -the GM debacle. Strike two - In 1973, VW admits to installing an emission defeat device, is fined $120,000 by the EPA, agrees to never do it again. Strike three and you're out?
