  • We set out to verify these cars' lofty highway-fuel-economy ratings-42 mpg for the Jetta, 46 for the Cruze-by driving from our Ann Arbor headquarters to the world's largest truck stop in Walcott, Iowa. After that 409-mile drive, the Jetta was still 200 miles from empty and the Cruze more than 300, so we turned around and headed for Engineered Diesel in Allendale, Michigan.

    I have a 2011 Jetta TDI manual and have gotten 52.3 MPG from St Louis to north of Indy, a total of 305 miles. I also have a 2013 Passat TDI with a DSG and have gotten on the same route 54.3 MPG! The computer shifts smarter than I do with the manual.
    I have had VWs since 77 and love them as they seem to go on forever. I sold my 2005 Jetta TDI when I learned I could sell the 8 year old car with 114,000 miles on it and still get $10,000 for it!!! The first VW that I got rid of before it went over 200.000 miles!!!

    I own a 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel, and I gotta say that Chevy hit a home run with this one. My best Fuel mileage for a 25 mileage average is 62.8 MPG driving 55 MPH. At 65 MPH, I averaged 55 MPG. I can't believe how well this car is made. It has lots of acceleration and handles like a dream. Oh, c'mon, guys. The Jetta has a 14.5 gallon tank. the Cruze has a 15.6 gallon tank. Who are you trying to kid? The proper test would be to run out of fuel, then put in the exact amounts of fuel in each tank.

      Vdub Guy I've owned both. Even accounting for the extra gallon capacity the Cruze has, it still does better on highway range than the VWTDI. But, it's all academic now since neither is made anymore.
      What's fascinating to me is that both of these cars were going 75 MPH, so they weren't babying them nor doing any hypermiling. Amazing. Try that in a BEV.

      @@haywoodjablome234 I have a buyback Passat and a few weeks ago drove in 100-degree heat from Los Angeles up into the mountains and over them to Bakersfield. Was doing 80 when it was clear and I wasn't bogged down in traffic, had a good 20 miles of stop and go weekend street traffic, and drove back to the city and got stuck in Saturday night traffic jams at 4 different spots. @@haywoodjablome234 one thing to note though, the VW TDI they tested was DPF only since DEF wasn't introduced into the Jetta until 2015 so that was a disadvantage for the numbers. The 2015 Jetta can routinely hit 50+ MPGs if you drive it right. But you're right, Chevy didn't have to cheat.

    The Cruze traveled 130 more miles with only 1.1 more gallons of fuel. Even if you filled the Cruze with only 14.5 gallons of fuel, it would still have traveled farther than the Jetta. The Cruze is more efficient, the Jetta costs more to drive.

    Being an owner of a 2014 cruze diesel, 46 mpg hwy is the least you will get with this vehicle doing 70 mph. If you drive 55-60 it will get over 50 mpg, flat roads with no wind. The fuel tank is 15 1/2 gal, but it will hold a total of 17 1/2 gal. It takes a while to stuff all that in there but diesel foams up when being pumped and takes a while to settle down. My car with a FULL tank will go 175 miles before the fuel gauge needle moves off of the full mark. I have gone 760 miles on a fill up and that is with 1 1/2 gallons still in the tank, with the low lite just starting to come on. Around 48 mpg,

    To get the diesel engine in a Cruze, one must also purchase the package that it comes with. Meaning that in order to achieve fuel savings, one must spend an additional ~$9,000, up front. And its not available with a manual gearbox.
    Congratulations, once again, GM for mucking up what could be a beautiful thing.

One thing to consider, after about 10K miles the TDI's mileage increases greatly, during break in its a bit disappointing. I liked my Jetta so much I traded up for a Passat TDI, wonderful car! While I like the Cruze, its a bit too small for my taste. We need Ford to make a Fusion diesel, that would be sweet!

      +Jacksonkellyfreak Everyone has their good and bad with both companies. I bought a 2000 TDi brand new. It was delivered with a defective instrument cluster. It took 14 visits to get the bad from factory fuel injection pump replaced (went more than 10 months with a frequent misfire and despite the pump screaming, the dealerships couldn't figure out what was wrong). At less than 50K miles, the turbo failed, which is a very common occurrence on this vintage. Between the power window motor failing multiple times, and cheap coatings on interior panels coming off, and the other mentioned repairs, it had been in the shop for almost 2 months during my 2 years of ownership, and would have cost me more than $8,000 dollars for the repairs if I had to pay for them.
      I replaced it with a 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer. I'm now at 196,000 with the original powertrain, save the rear axle. Repairs in and out of pocket have been less than 2K, which is extremely reasonable for the vehicle. In all, including owning a fair amount of imports - a '00 Nissan Maxima, a '97 Toyota Camry, a '99 Mazda 626 (wife's), an '81 VW Rabbit Diesel, and an '84 VW Jetta Turbo Diesel, the TrailBlazer has been by far the best, and most reliable vehicle I've owned. Yes, it gets terrible fuel economy in comparison, but I knew that it would.
      I'll never, ever own a VW again, even if they hadn't made the mistake of the century with their "clean" diesel.

      I'm the opposite. I would never in my life own, drive or even work on a gm product. Everyone I've ever known that bought one has literally had nothing but problems out of them. I owned ONE, and it was the worst automotive mistake I ever made. it had 70 something thousand on it when it puked its rods out. Had clean oil in it, didn't burn or leak any, showed full on the stick. Never got an oil pressure warning. Just bang clatter clatter. Piece of shit. But my Jetta, which isn't diesel, has been one of the best trouble free cars I've ever owned. 185k and has only needed maintenance and I just did the timing chains on it, but they were the factory set. I probably would buy another VW, but I would definitely own another Toyota, and as much as I HATE and despise American cars, believe it or not I would consider another Ford diesel truck.

    I've seen 829 miles from a tank of fuel with my Chevy Cruise diesel.
    My Chevy diesel has 114k miles on it and mechanicaly nothing has failed...it's the emission system with the sensors and the Def fluid going bad that has been a issue for me....when the car detects the Def fluid quialty not up to spec it shuts the car down with speed restrictions and within like 200 miles the car won't go over 4mph.
    If I had known that the EPA mandates that the car be shut down for low quialty Def fluid I would never had bought a diesel...when everything is right the diesel is great..good torque snd great fuel mileage...but the emission system is the weak point with diesels

    I personally prefer the VW. (full disclosure, I own a 2012 GTI, 6 spd)
    The Cruze does have a bigger tank by 1.1 gallons. But if you apply 3rd or 4th grade math you would divide the miles traveled by the amount of gallons used. I apologize if the exact numbers are off.
    Cruze 747 miles / 15.6 = 47.88 mpg Jetta 609 miles / 14.5 = 42 mpg
    So even if the Jetta had an extra 1.1 gallons to equal the size tank the Cruze had, it would only run about 655.62 miles until it ran out.
    That science sponsored by Woodlawn elementary school. Again...I own a VW GTI. So the argument about the bigger tank evening things out is invalid.

  • @conza1989

    Interesting comparison but it's mute now that I've just discovered the the 2.0 Diesel in the Cruze also has a timing belt. What is the fascination with belts in this context? I mean seriously.. does it save manufacturers THAT much money to use belts instead of chains? Is there some super magical mechanical reason why they can't put a chain on a small diesel? I mean.. the lowly 1.5 liter 4 cylinder in Toyotas utilizes a timing chain. I've also heard some really stupid BS excuses as to why belts are supposedly better than chains like belts are quieter.. bunk! A properly implemented timing chain along with durable chain guides and good tensioners will last just about forever and is NOT noiser than a belt. FACT is it cost slightly more to manufacture the chain parts (along with cutting the chain properly for quiet running) and ~that~ is the real reason for the use of belts... period. The bean counters and suits feel it's ok to pass that off to consumers instead of selling the reliability of a chain. Fine.. I just won't buy it. Lots of hybrid options out there that have NO belts at all! Manufacturers.. please stuff timing belts. This is the 21st century and after having so much bad luck with timing belts in the past? I don't want to have ANYTHING to do with them in the future. I also don't mind paying a little extra for the car if that is what is really required to not have a frikken belt. :) Thanks!

    • @joevwgti.
      @joevwgti. 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't seem to find anything in googling as to why that is the case. It is also what keeps me away from all small diesels. Also dual-mass flywheels, high pressure fuel pumps, and just VERY POOR diesel fuels in the US. VW is blaming owners when the high pressure fuel pump goes bad. The only thing that might change my mind, is a VW TDI Tiguan 4motion, if it hits the US and is below 28,000 dollars...which I highly doubt. Last I had heard, Mazda was going to be bringing the US a CX-5 diesel with timing chain. I don't plan to hold my breath for that to become a reality. Every other manufacturer has diesels, we just never get them in the US...it's bullsh*t(Kia, Subaru, Mitsubishi).

      belts are quieter and are much easier and cheaper to replace. chains wear out too and they have tensioners that can go bad. i wouldnt mind either one, if you go to a decent shop, its not very expensive for a belt job. i got a 2005 accord v6 timing belt/pump/tensioners/pulleys all replaced with OEM parts for 700 bucks at 130k miles. you cant assume that just because it has a chain it will last forever. (although they last much longer usually)

    • @joevwgti.
      @joevwgti. 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      A belt is the owner's responsibility should it snap, a chain is the manufacturer's(if under warranty). If your engine is like mine, the chain is sandwiched between the transmission and the motor. So the entire engine/transmission must be hoisted from the car. I'd opt to buy a new car, rather than have a chain replaced due to that cost. If that were a belt...the car would be garbage. There are vehicles(not common) with gears, rather than chain or belt, it's a manufacturing choice based on greed. Don't make excuses for bad engineering.
