- Boat Friends,
Experience the wild fury of nature in Duluth, Minnesota, as I captured the incredible moments on 3/26/2024 of the giant winter storm, dumping over 14 inches of snow in just 24 hours. This isn’t your average snowfall; it’s a spectacle of nature’s power, with the Lake Superior shoreline transformed into a tumultuous sea of waves crashing against the Aerial Lift Bridge. The star of the video is the mighty Edwin H. Gott, a 1004-foot ship, daring to depart amidst blinding snow and fierce winds. This awesome 4K footage showcases the ship almost disappearing into the whiteout, a testament to the severe weather conditions and the ship’s bold journey through the harbor.
Why just hear about extreme weather when you can see it in action? From the sideways snow that blurs the line between sky and water to the waves that defy the frozen landscape, this video is a thrilling adventure into the heart of a blizzard’s beauty and chaos. Perfect for weather enthusiasts, maritime fans, and thrill-seekers alike, the video offers a unique glimpse into the resilience required to navigate the great lakes during a snowstorm. Hit the subscribe button and join the other Boat Friends on this unforgettable visual journey, where each frame tells a story of courage, nature’s unpredictable power, and the mesmerizing beauty of winter in Duluth.

Take a look at this news article. West Duluth received over 14 inches of snow so far with this storm. www.duluthnewstribune.com/news/local/western-duluth-two-harbors-top-snowfall-totals-so-far
Saint Cloud has been utterly disrespected by deep heavy slush. 1800s stylee.
I am so grateful this snow headed north. I live in southeast Michigan and I don't need that anymore this year! 🥺🥶
I get that! 😂 But hey, Spring is right around the corner. ⛴️👍
Wow!
@SallyBedow it was really incredible seeing the snow coming down with the ship
Snowing in Cheyenne today. Thinking about the folks in Baltimore. Absolutely tragic. Good to hear your voice again!
Absolutely, our heart goes out to the family affected in that boat accident
Thanks Mike for enduring the terrible weather for us . Stay safe and warm 🏴
It’s my pleasure, don’t worry, good weather will be ahead. Today it’s a lot of snow, but it was a cool ship.
It’s a bit of snow. What, you made out of chocolate?
@@dannjp75 nice fish. No, about 14” of snow fell that day but that ship can blast through any amount of snow
Thanks for going out & showing us the ship during the blizzard! This was an awesome ship video ❤
It was definitely wild weather today with the snow and the ship
Hi Captain Mike, wow weather change. But we needed the H2O. To bad about ship in Baltimore Harbor hitting bridge lost power🙏Prayers to all those involved 🙏 RIP Workers on bridge 🇺🇸😥
It’s amazing how the weather changed from warm to a blizzard in Duluth., I also agree, prayers to the families of those workers
Prayers indeed 🙏
Thanks for watching, Joe! Duluth is especially beautiful in the winter season. ⛴️👍
Prayers, many. A horrible tragedy 😞🙏
Wow, that’s one good looking ship. Safe voyage.
Your videos are nearly as good as being there. Excellent views/photography. You keep me connected when I can't be there anymore. 🧡
I’m happy to hear it. I always try to incorporate cool things that I see when I’m down by the pier as the ships are going out. Your comment makes me very happy. Thank you.
Mike, I missed you! Looks beautiful..... I need to check my notifications. Love your legendary snowman. Thank you for all you do to give us Duluth and marine traffic!!! It is too a love of mine!!! Stay safe...🛳🛥⛴️💙👋
That Boat friends snowman was able to make one last appearance. It’s still blowing snow here in Duluth. I hope you’re doing great. It’s always wonderful hearing from you, Pam.
Hard to believe snow writing is back again and the snowman ⛄️. Thanks for braving the conditions for us, Mike.
It’s definitely the last time I think the Boat friends snowman will make an appearance until November. I’m glad I was able to get it in this video today.
Love the fight at the bow 😊❤
I want you to know that you were the official first Boat friends member!
Love watching the ships coming through the canal.
I have even more fun watching the ships come through when there’s bad weather to show everybody it makes it interesting and fun
Boat Friends Snowman...Too Cute❤
It’s awesome having the boat friend snowman out there again☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Thanks for weathering this cold blowing snow weather! Now go get warm!! 🌨❄🌨❄☃
It was really fun getting that snowman out there one last time with this wild snow and ship
Ghost ship. Thanks for braving the elements.
That’s why I was thinking too about this video, it was a ghost ship coming out of all of that Snow. It was really cool.
Wow! That's a really big freighter! Love it!
Thanks for watching Dave. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
First two lines of "June is Bustin' out All Over" from Carousel: "March went out like a lion,
A-whippin’ up the water in the bay"
Great to have you back Mike. Greetings from San Francisco !
Now yummy thinking about San Francisco. I love that city. Talk about about ships to see, that’s a city with ships
I love hearing the horns again!
Nothing like hearing those ships salutes
Gosh, if only there was a way to make the planet warmer.
All of that ice and snow has almost melted in Duluth
So enjoy your videos, glad the season is on again
And just think, the season is just getting started. We are going to have so much fun.
Mike, i am sure its bitter cold out there. Thank you so much for doing this for us.
It was definitely cold enough where I didn’t feel my fingers after a little bit
Exciting video - big ship in stormy weather. Gotta love those hardy souls on the pier, all 11 of 12 of them!
It always amazes me how many people actually still come out with terrible weather to watch the ships. A lot of people love these ships and Duluth.
WOW, was the ship super close to the north pier.
I watched the ship leave earlier on the Duluth Harbor Cams and noticed that she was hugging the North Pier.
Your perspective was even more stunning as you could really see the ship up close.
Thanks Capt Mike
Someone else mentioned that the ship was really close to the north pier. I’m gonna have to go back and look at this. Thank you so much for your awesome comment and taking time to watch the ship today, my friend.
Thanks so much Mike for braving this storm for us! What crazy weather up there. I am in Dayton, OH so we are quite a bit milder here. Thanks for bringing the Boat Friends Snow Man! Stay warm!
Hey, I’m looking forward to a warm-up. It should be pretty good this weekend. I hope everything is great in Ohio my friend.
What a awesome video Cap 🧢, more to come 🙏🏻 5:29
Nasty looking day for sure!!
There will be better days ahead in Duluth
Hey boat friend thanks another great video Mike
Mike, pleasure hearing from you again, lots of snow today with the ship
Thanks Mike for weathering the storm to bring us this great video. One of my favorite footers for sure. Stay Warm and safe. 58° down here in Michigan and very windy. 👍⚓
It was my pleasure being out there with the awesome ship today
Fantastic Action Packed Duluth canal Video Great video Mike I Enjoyed It We HadA Few Rumbles Of Thunder Here In Battle Creek Rain But No Snow 😊
It’s always fun getting out there watching the crazy snow with these big ships
Hi from Philly…I love the winter weather so naturally I appreciate you braving the cold and wind to enable us to see another great ship…
My friend in Philadelphia. The city of brotherly love. This was such a powerful and beautiful ship to watch go by.
Gotts gotta get it. And IT is sweet Tac pellets Thanks for the coverage boat friend
Robert, I like what you did there at the start of the sentence. That was good. I’m gonna remember that! That’s a double Gott
Hey Mike nice to see you back out there with the ships again. ⛴🌬🌨 The Edwin H Gott looks awesome in the blizzard ❄
I came back just in time for a blizzard
Another fasinating ship video. Enjoy your narration about the ship. Thanks for braving the snow. Hope it's warmer in June.
Thank you for your kind words! I’m definitely ready for the warmer weather. 👍⛴️
Love watching the huge ships in the bad weather, they seam to take it easy.Ibwatched the video this morning of the container ship hitting the bridge in Baltimore,I have been on that bridge I pray for those that are missing.
One of the beauties of the ships is how resilient they are! The families involved in the boat accident are in our prayers. ❤️
🌫🌬 🌨 day two of blizzard conditions , wind gusts ❄️ hello Mike & boat friends 👋
The snow should be tapering off here in Duluth very soon, I’m guessing it’s going to end up being around 15 or 16 inches for areas of Duluth. I know earlier today they were saying West Duluth was at 14 inches. So a good amount of snow came our way and I was able to record the ship in it as well today.
Hey Mike! Enjoy one of winters last attempts at hanging on before it lets spring take a firm hold on Duluth. Stay warm, take care and God Bless ya Brother!!!❤😊
Thank you for your comment, Scott! I’m definitely enjoying the end of winter while Spring is budding! You stay warm as well and God Bless. ⛴️👍
Old saying: "March comes in like a lamb and goes out like LION! So true most years.
They can go either way, it definitely looked like a snowy lion today
Thank you Mike for another great video, but brrrrrr got cold watching it!
It’s my pleasure being out there, showing you this snow and the ship
Fascinating footage! Thanks for sharing the wintry scenes with us, and the video of this amazing ship. I would so love to tour one of these mammoth freighters!!
P. S. Liked the snowman, too! He looked quite cheerful.
It was so great putting that Boat friends snowman out again⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
It was such a beautiful winter day in the canal! That’s also a dream of my own to tour a ship! The boat friends snowman is always cheerful to see a ship 😂 Thanks for watching, Jane! ⛴️👍
Mike thank you for the live stream in bad conditions..after watching Duluth gave me a better perspective of the size of the ship, that tragically hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore…prayers for those lost..awful to watch that bridge crumble so easily..Watching from S Jersey again..
It’s such a sad story and I can barely watch that video of the bridge collapsing. I want you to take a look at this interesting interesting story though because of that bridge. The bridge here in Duluth is very similar and they were talking about it today. www.northernnewsnow.com/2024/03/26/engineer-speaks-baltimore-bridge-collapse-blatnik-bridge-similarities/
Thank you Mike for going in that snowing weather. To captain and crew safe travel. Hoping you got a some coffee or Hot chocolate.
I definitely did do a hot chocolate
Wow that's some nasty weather! Thanks for braving out that weather for us Mike! She is sitting low in the water! Safe journeys to the Edwin H Gott! The Captain & crew really earn their money in weather like that. Hot chocolate time Mike!!
That wild snow out there today. I’m definitely getting a hot chocolate.
Btw, your written description of this event and the weather is outstanding. Your expertise really shines. @@vibewithmike
@susanpugh130 thank you, I’ve always taken pride and trying my best to write. I love reading novels so sometimes the flow of descriptions can sound like a novel. I have also enjoyed using fun and different words a little outside of the mainstream
Hey there Mike and all the Boat Friends. Right when you think Winter is over. Well it's not!
You forgot to point out the 13 degree wind chill. That'll bite right to one's core.
I noticed the Gott was favoring the north side (left as facing Lake Superior) of the canal. No doubt to help offset the stiff north cross wind. So often we see ships leave in beautiful Chamber of Commerce weather. Not on this day. The Captain and crew did a marvelous job dealing with strong winds with restricted visibilty.
Hum, we don't yet know where she is heading. Her AIS is still showing Two Harbors. But as you know, the Gott loaded at CN in Duluth, and is miles past Two Harbors. Oh well. She is going somewhere with that load of taconite.
The Boat Friends Snowman was certainly enjoying this blustery "Winter" day. Thanks for letting him tag along.
Excellent video Mike. Thanks for braving the elements.
You and I have discussed this before we both really enjoy this ship. I’m really surprised I was able to get that boat friends snowman out there one last time after this warm weather in Minnesota.
Something about the most powerful laker going up against the elements that draws me (and others) into watching!@@vibewithmike
@chuckg6039 there’s something about the sheer size and power of these machines going by us. They are so majestic.
After spending decades in beautiful Duluth, I have moved to Arizona and couldn’t be happier!
There’s an old saying, you can’t shovel hot!🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵
I love Arizona winters but last summer was 115 for almost two months.
Thanks for bringing the snowman :)
I knew it would be my last chance to bring the Boat friends snowman out
Good morning Mike and boat friends!!! Lovely weather ... NOT!! Ohh well , take each day as a gift eh Mike. Thanks for being out there in that cold and frizzy air to bring us another fine video of a beautiful ship. Terrible news out of Baltimore with the outbound container ship " Dahli " striking the bridge pillar and collapsing the bridge.
Art, how are you doing in Canada brother? It’s a terribly sad situation that happened this morning in Baltimore. All of us boat friends have our hearts open for the families affected.
That was fantastic. Love the angry water in the canal.
Greg, I believe it’s going to be the last snowstorm until November. I had to get out there and record that ship.
Love the look of the Gott. I regard her as the prettiest Thousand-Footer. Thanks. Mike, for your feeds!
The ship is so awesome looking! Thank you for your support. 👍⛴️
This morning we're praying for everyone in Baltimore. 🙏🙏🙏
Many prayers going out to the families involved in that sad tragedy today in Baltimore🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Mike. Great stuff. Enjoyed watching her coming out of the snow shield. A great day for a good cup of coffee or Hot chocolate and I hope you have the time to stop in your favorite place and savor your favorite brew.-----Michigan
Ed, nice hearing from your brother, I hope all is well in Michigan Michigan. Don’t worry spring will be coming very soon for both of us. Take care and I hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you for the wonderful coverage. Just when you think any job outside the office would be nice, you see the Gott going out - no thank you
It is my pleasure being out here watching the ships. Thank you so much for watching the video. It was amazing to see the snow with the ship today.
Thank you Mike
Hey, my pleasure, it was a real thrill to see that on a Tuesday
Thank you Mike!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Did you see this video from last night? th-cam.com/users/liveWB1eJL9vbao?si=4CopKxmkpd-Ebefb
Thanks for the video ! Fun to watch and the lake ships are amazing and I also enjoy the history. 🚢⚓
I’m glad that you enjoyed it! Any chance that I get to show the weather and a ship simultaneously is a really fun thing for me to do. This is one of my favorite videos with the snow coming down and a ship.
Thanks for braving in the weather for us. Hope they can keep that ship crew off that deck.
It’s my pleasure being out there recording the ship in the snow today. It was really cool seeing 1000 footer leaving in these bad conditions to show everybody.
Hey Mike and all the BOAT FRIEND NATION! Missed the live feed but Holy Buckets you got the best of the storm, and even the Snoman is back! Not a good day for sailing, got to be rough out on the Big Lake.
Absolutely, both friends nation! It was so fun pulling that boat snowman back out. I thought that was going to be in the closet until November. How awesome is that to pull it out again? This video was so fun to record with the snow and the ship.
Wow, Mike, she's really a beautiful ship. God speed on her journey. Thanks for braving the Duluth snowy weather! We've got a ton here in Mpls too. Be careful out there❤
I think a lot of that rain reduced the snow packed in Minneapolis? The storm has been pretty crazy here in Minnesota for us, but it was cool to see a ship in it.
Awesome video! What a change in the weather. That was fun to watch.
The Boat friends snowman also made an appearance!
Thanks for the post in the snow and cold !!
Hey, thanks for watching. It was my pleasure getting out there. I knew it would be the last real snow weather event to see a ship until the fall.
What a way to start the season! Every boat heads to their hideout before they get to unload their first load.
Nothing funner than a Duluth blizzard with a ship
I live over here by Itasca State Park and haven’t been over to Duluth in a few years, thanks for bringing it to me because I love it !!!
I’m glad you’re enjoying the ships, my friend
Thanks for the great video.
I’m happy that you enjoyed the blowing snow and big ship
Wow that sure is a moody looking day. Thanks for being out there Mike. As others have said thinking of all those in Baltimore
The snow was flying during this video for sure. Yes, many prayers going out to those involved in that boat accident today in Baltimore.
My son lives in Duluth. We go up there often to visit, and we can't get enough of watching the lift bridge and the cargo ships. Thanks for the great video!
This makes me so happy. I’m sure your son was thrilled with the mild winter because we didn’t have to deal with all of that snow. I promise to continue putting out videos from Duluth, did you see this one from the other day? th-cam.com/video/jy0odsXGMP0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=m7uHdfp22raDkD37
Thanks!
No, thank you! for taking time out of your day to watch this video and to leave a comment. Thank you so much.
I love snow; slush not so much. Another great video! Thanks.
I agree with you, Gerald! Thanks for taking the time out of your day to watch this video! Looking forward to Spring. ⛴️👍
Stay safe dry and warm everyone. Love from Debbie Moffat in Warwick Queensland Australia.
Debbie, it is great hearing from you. The land of down under, my goodness how I wish I was there today with this wild weather. I don’t think the Boat friends snowman would last very long there and Australia. Thanks again for your comment and I hope you have a joyous day.
Love the ship video in the snow coming down. Thanks
Many times I go out and watch the ships without recording. I really enjoy these ships TH-cam or not.
You’re a trooper foe going out in this weather Mike. I was at work and managed by chance to see a comment on the Harbour cam to say it was just leaving. Didn’t see your beacon, but I was looking for you! Hope you got warm and dry very quickly afterwards. The ship was very brave to go out in these conditions!
I usually put that Boat friends beacon up when it’s nighttime, and sometimes I forget to take it off the pole and sometimes I forget to even put it on the pole😂😂😂😂😂🔵
This is superior showing her true persona. Its nice to see the water calm as a mill pond with blue skies and soft breezes but not a true representation of the majesty and power of this ocean like body of water. Fair winds are a deception luring you farther out on the lake but superior can change in an instant bcoming the angry, frenzied gale that is capable of devouring massive ships many times never to be seen again. The many moods of Lake Superior. Bless those that courageously embark on their journeys.
Beautiful poem! Lake Superior is such an amazing lake! Thanks for watching 👍⛴️
Gotta love the great lakes !
Nothing like the powerful lakes, superior and snow and a ship
great we enjoyed thank you
I’m glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much
Wow! That weather's something else! What a difference a day makes lol! The gott,s really looking good.
It’ll definitely be the last blast of snow in Duluth until until the fall
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for taking time to watch the ship. Take a look at this unexpected beautiful ship that departed last night
th-cam.com/users/liveWB1eJL9vbao?si=2jT0eugfEPKELmjW
Thanks for braving the cold great video
It gets a lot worse than Duluth, but I wanted to get out there for that last snowstorm to show all the boat friends
Excellent commentary. Look forward to more!
Thank you so much. Take a look at the ship from last night that made an unexpected departure.
th-cam.com/users/liveWB1eJL9vbao?si=2jT0eugfEPKELmjW
This is a great winter video, love the fog!
That snow is coming down pretty good yesterday with this ship
My mother went to 4 year nursing school in Duluth in the late 30s. She told me about the super cold and windy weather she lived in.
Your mother was not kidding! It is very cold. I guarantee you that it made her very tough from Weather standpoint moving forward after that. She could deal with any whether if she was in Duluth for four years.
Wasn't sure if the seagulls would be out in those conditions, but there they were!! We had 6°F here is western Nebraska last night. Hope your snow doesn't last long, but it was good to see the SnowMan again. He is #2 after the Gott!
Thanks for the video
I definitely think that’ll be the last appearance for any major snow and the boat friend snowman until fall this coming year. Those seagulls are out all the time. It’s amazing. Another thing that that’s amazing as I would’ve never thought that you had 6° in Nebraska, I thought it would be way warmer for you.
@@vibewithmike Average low for today is 28°F. Record low is -6°F from 1899. So 22 less than average, but still 12 above the record low. We can have some big swings in temperature, partially because we are at 4,000 ft. elevation and generally have low humidity.
@mikewatson4644 this extra information that you provided about Nebraska is something I will not forget. This is actually a great information the 4000 feet below sea level. That’s really cool to know.
You're the best!
What a very nice and cool thing for you to say. Thank you so much. I’m keeping my eye out on the ships to do some live streams for this weekend. I hope you have a great Wednesday.
Thank you Mike, that is one big sob. Parents from Kettle River and Floodwood, so semi near your location. Thanks again love to see em.
I’m really glad that you’re enjoying the videos. I promise I’ll keep these fun ships coming to you live
Love the Gott.I worked on her during construction at Bay Shipbuilding
You’re one of those lucky people in the world that actually got to be on the ship and work on the ship. That is amazing. I bet you have so many cool stories.
Hi mike i am on break it is blowing pretty good there today
Good to see the snow man out there !
To bad about the bridge that collapsed i was amazed how much of it fell down
They should have tugs assist ships that big in case they loose power in confined spases
Back to work have a great day !
I’m glad you were able to take time to watch this ship in the snow with this video. Our hearts go out to everybody involved and that sad situation in Baltimore today.
Great to hear from you, Mike! I've missed the ship beauties & your vids. Wow! What a storm you had! Utah's been getting some great snow too!
Nice work, Mike. Seeing the Gott come out of the snow was a really nice shot. And then she vanishes into the snow. Thank you for braving the elements to show us this.
You are right, it appeared from the snow and then it disappeared into the snow. Great observation and I hope you’re having a wonderful wonderful Tuesday, brother.
Good to see the snowman! Wow! The weather. Great to hear your voice. Thank you for braving the elements to bring this to us. 😊
Stacy, how could I pass up the chance to bring our old friend the Boat friends snowman back out for one last visit before all of the snow goes away
Stay warm Mike!
Luckily, they are talking about 40° by this weekend
Being a musician for many years, I've covered "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" on stage most of my life. Watching your videos really brings the true meaning of that song to me. Thanks.
It would be cool to have a link to your performance doing this. I will post a link for us boat friends to watch. In the meantime, here is that beautiful song that will live on forever. m.th-cam.com/video/FuzTkGyxkYI/w-d-xo.html
Enjoyed watching the Gott! I haven't seen her since I did some off-season work on her back in the mid 90's. It was in Milwaukee and she was having an engine rebuilt. Most of that season I was doing work on the Roger Blau which the Gott was tied up next to at the pier. When it came time to run the engine in they sucked the hausers in tight and churned up the harbor basin for a while. The power of those engines was something to see. I really enjoyed working on those ships, they are magnificent.
You are one of those lucky people that has the talent to be able to work on those ships and you were able to do it. How cool is that. The stories you must have. The memories. I bet you could go on forever with the cool stuff that you got to experience. This is an awesome comment.
@@vibewithmike To be clear, I didn't serve on them while they were underway, just in the winter when they would have upkeep done while in port.
It was fun though.
@@badgermoon9229 same difference, to be part of a story with anyone of those ships is absolutely awesome. You’re a lucky person.
Mike I wasn't interested in big ships until I watched one of your videos. Now I try to watch them all. I appreciate the way you inform your audience. Keep up the great work
That is so cool to hear! I’m glad that you’re getting into the ships. I’m going to make sure that we keep having fun with them.
Mike thank you for article about Minnesota bridge. Here, across the Delaware River, between Philly and NJ, they also have fenders to protect the pillar structures of the bridges
No problem, it’s very interesting and scary at the same time wondering what some of these maritime communities and shipping companies are going to do about some of these other bridges. This could definitely happen again unfortunately
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching, Leonard! It was very fun recording this ship. ⛴️👍
I like! Thanks for posting!!
My pleasure, thank you for watching the ship
Hey Mike thanks for braving that weather to show us that great ship
I knew it would be the last big weather event with the ship coming through the season
Be safe on those roads. Keep warm.
Thank you, my friend, I’m going to stay in the house today. That’s enough snow for me. Thanks for watching the ship. Go through the snow today.
Love watching the boats
Thank you sir, for braving the elements to show us this magnificent ship. Salute! 🌹⚓
It’s wonderful that we are approaching spring and gods weather and ships
3/26/24 - Welcome from Charleston,SC , 70 Deg. & Cloudy ! Enjoy your videos ! Thanks
I really appreciate you taking the time to watch the video. It was really fun, capturing this video with the Snow today and the ship.
Edwin H. Gott is my favorite ship. stunning.
I definitely think it’s one of the coolest ships out there and especially knowing how fast it is everybody loves it
The ship is magnificent.
Thanks Mike, very good video.
Thank you for your production. Great to see Duluth and the lip bridge. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. I hope you get to see the historic ship that left last night that I was able to live stream right here. th-cam.com/users/liveWB1eJL9vbao?si=GK831sx2LMYvDlU0
