- Op de olympische spelen van 1972 in Munchen speelde USA de finale in het basketbal tegen de USSR. Deze finale eindigde heel tumultueus en zorgde voor veel controverse. Dat dergelijke dingen mogelijk zijn op dit niveau is onbegrijpelijk. Al is het wel een mooie zaak dat de hegemonie van de USA werd verbroken, alsook hun hoogmoed wordt afgestraft. After nearly being knocked out Collins calmy makes both free throws one of the great clutch moments in the history of sports!!

*1.* The Soviet's bench called a timeout when Collins was on the court's floor running into the scaffolding, after being fouled. 3 seconds remain.
*2.* The Soviet bench *did not* call timeout between Collins' two foul shots, or after when the Soviets went up the court. It was *before* these two events.
*3.* The Soviet coaches were indicating clearly to the scorer's desk they called and wanted a timeout. They were being ignored.
*4.* Collins puts the USA ahead with his two baskets.
*5.* The horn sounds before Collins pops the second - an odd time for the horn to sound. The horn sounded as the ball had left Collins' hands.
*6.* The sounding horn was an acknowledgement that a Soviet timeout should have been awarded earlier. The Soviets did not call timeout illegally between Collins' two shots. Soviet coaches were on the line indicating they want a timeout.
*7.* Play _quickly_ resumed after Collins scores, with 3 seconds remaining, with a Soviet inbound *_(1st)._* The Soviet bench were still on the line rightly protesting that they wanted a timeout (called before Collins' baskets & acknowledged by the horn) and that was being ignored.
*8.* There was 1 second left. The ref stops play at 1 second left seeing the Soviet bench pointing to him making "T" signs with their hands.
*9.* The ref saw this error, however never gave the Soviets the timeout. He rolled back play & time to the inbound throw taking the ball back to the line for another Soviet inbound, *_(2nd),_* resetting play and time. 3 seconds still remain. The ref could have started the game at 1 sec remaining, however taking the ball back to the line means resetting the time back to 3 seconds. Now back to the state of play and time after Collins scored. Soviets are still denied the timeout.
*10.* The ref never gave the Soviet timeout, which he should have done. At this point the Soviets are being cheated.
*11.* The Bulgarian umpire, not the Brazilian ref, resumed play before the clock was reset to 3 secs, allowing play to resume at 1 sec on the unset clock with the *_(2nd)_* Soviet inbound.
*12.* The US thought the game was over with them winning as the horn was sounded after 1 second.
*13.* The Ref saw the errors of:
a) not resetting the clock
b) resuming play without his authority.
He is in charge not the umpire.
*14.* The ref puts matters right, resetting the clock to 3 secs taking the ball back to the line for another Soviet inbound, the *_(3rd)._* *There is nothing wrong with that decision.*
*15.* The US players fully understood that the clock had not been reset and why play was being resumed.
*16.* The Soviets threw the ball up the court from their *_(3rd)_* inbound popping the winning basket within 3 secs.
*Winners !!*
*The ref did **_most_** right, but not all.* He should have done more, annulled Collins scores and taken play back to the point that Collins was on the floor when the Soviets called timeout, giving the Soviets the timeout they called for. After the Soviet timeout Collins could take his two free throws again. Or the Soviets could have the timeout between Collins' two throws.
The ref was unaware that the Soviets called timeout when Collins was on the floor, the scorer on the desk never informed him - a breakdown in the officiating mechanism. The Soviet coaches were indicating clearly to the scorer's desk they called for a timeout. The USA team were beaten fairly.
*The USA gripe -* was that Jones the FIBA head, went the few feet to the scorers table and suggested that the clock be reset to 3 secs from 1 sec, as it should have been, as the play was being rolled back to the inbound. The ref was doing this anyhow. He could have suggested taking the play back to the Soviet timeout call, which would have been the fair and right thing to do. He never. The ref had no need to take any notice of anyone, he was 100% in command. The Soviet timeout was called when Collins was on the floor.
*The Soviet gripe -* was that their timeout call, when Collins was on the floor, was ignored. They only got play and time back rolled back to the point Collins scored. They *never* got the timeout they called for with even a horn sounding for it. They got *nothing.* They made full use of the play being put back back to the position after Collins scored, so were satisfied. They had 3 seconds to score - they skilfully did.
Fact: The Soviets won at 40:03 elapsed game time... which, by rule, is emphatically impossible.

All I needed to see was the referee waving his arms and telling the Russians to hurry up and inbound after Collins made the free throws. The referee isn’t suppose to direct the action. Corruption at its finest.

@@phillipmain9144 The Soviets called a Time Out prior to the Collins free throws, electing to have the Time Out between the two throws.
This was totally legit. Except the referee fucked up and the allowed the second free throw when there should have been the Russian Time Out (which was the reason for the horn just as Collins was about to take his second throw). So..... what should have happened is the score remained at 49-49 (The USA never officially reached 50 points), the Russian Time Out taken place, then the second free throw followed immediately by the remaining 3 seconds.
Clearly the disallowing of a Russian Time Out was wrong and the game should have been brought back, not however to the inbound as happened, but prior to the second free throw with the scores level.
Even with both playing sides accepting the point at which to resume play, the second inbound recommencement was also not legitimate because the official clock was not reset to 3 seconds and the timekeeper was not keeping time. The scoreboard was reading 50 seconds. All things need to be in place for play to be officially under way. They weren't.
So the play, rightly, had to be brought back again.
The 3rd inbound was also not strictly legitimate, because the USA should have been made to retake the second free throw with the scores level. However, the mistake of awarding the USA a 1-point advantage had been made and accepted by both playing sides. In the event, this 'unfair' victory did not take place since the Russians overturned the score in the 3 seconds that were recognised by all official parties necessary for official play to occur.
Whatever should have happened, there is no case for the USA to claim victory since they never actually took the lead barring through a mistake by officials.
So who exactly was cheating here?
The best that can be said is that officially, barring errors, the scores were tied 49-49 with a free throw and 3 seconds unplayed. As it happens, an illegitimate free throw and 3 seconds that all parties agreed to play were played and the results were the reversal of a USA 1-point advantage. Sometimes things like this happen in sport.
To not turn up for your silver medal because for only one brief moment in the game you happened to be in the lead because a referee made the mistake of allowing a free throw during a Time Out, was rather petulant.
On a further point, your Lance Armstrong and the US Postal Service Team basically rendered 7 years of the Tour de France redundant, and laid waste all the time and money invested by fans. So you are part of "a shitty country like this" - but don't acknowledge it then you won't have to kill yourself - that is if you are a man of your word, which, coming from such a shitty country rife with bullshit, I rather doubt.

What a joke that was. US literally won twice. I know this is thrown around a lot but during this game, the officials were clearly paid by the Soviets to rig it. I have played basketball my whole life, been a coach and a ref myself, and I even read the rules of the 72' Olympic basketball. There were absolutely 0 reasons to award Soviets another try after they already missed their chance with 3 seconds left.
After the US won and then notified that the Soviets will get another try they were also told that if they do not accept that decision right away, they will automatically forfeit the game. Unreal.

If you watch the ref was not allowing the American to guard the guy throwing the ball in court. As the American tries to cover him the ref tells him to back up and allowed the Russian to throw the long pass uncovered. Also, under the hoop the Russian pushed the American to the ground. This video left out a lot. It doesn't matter to me either way but I saw a documentary that showed the way America was cheated. Just like the extra 3 seconds added and the ball going back to Russia after the first hail marry miss

The thing everyone forgets is how the ref told the American to back off at the end. Had he actually been defending the pass, they wouldn't have been able to get the ball down the court. When has any ref, EVER, told a player to back off of the inbounds pass?
It was the same ref that was waving his arms telling Russia to hurry up and inbound after Collins made the free throws at the end. It was complete corruption.

Just saw the 2017 Russian sports drama film "Three seconds" (also known as "Going Vertical") in the small theater in my apartment complex on October 3, 2020.
I have known the story since 1972, but didn't know that Team USA lagged behind throughout the match.
Team USA WON THE GOLD. RUSSIA MISSED THE SHOT.

My apologies, old boy, but I wouldn't term the actions of the Soviet team nor Renato William Jones "gentlemanly." Soviet players attempted to injure American players (Jim Brewer and Doug Collins are prominent examples), knowingly illegally substituted Edeschko during the stoppage, and the illegal interference by Jones can't be called gentlemanly by any stretch of the imagination.

(In fact, it was angiosarcoma of the heart). And Alzhan Zharmukhamedov was short-sighted in general. And I do not know how they really were. But according to the version of this film, the USSR national basketball team with three disabled members was able to ILLEGALLY perform a miracle by defeating the US national team. And all this in order for the coach to be able to heal his disabled son. Seriously, this movie is going to blow your mind more than the match itself.

Even as an layman such as me, who knows very little about basketball, that last few seconds of calling time-outs looks very suspicious.
Perhaps in those days the rules allowed for that and since that incident, they have modified the rules to avoid such occurrences from happening again.
I also notice that they have a score of 50 points and to me this looks to be quite low by today's standards, unless of course it is due to two strong teams playing each other that the scores are lower, or?

@polyrider81 I'm not an international basketball rules expert... but its a technical foul to call a time out when you have none left as was the case here. So the US would have got a freethrow(and possesion? depending on the rules at that time) if the refs had seen the coach calling a time out. If they did not see a time out being called why did they stop the play at half court and put 3 seconds back without calling an infraction?

Basketball is an American sport. In all other countries it's not so wide-played completely. It's no surprise at all that USA dominates basketball that much, considering proportionally money and nation-wide effort thrown into it, and the popularity of players, of course. Roughly Every college and university has incomparable basketball funding unlike the rest of the world. No other country can match at least a quarter of it. Don't forget that nowadays dream-team members have salaries like quite optimistic budget of some African country.
Guys that highly-paid are hardly the worst the nation could offer, cause it's a known secret that the best athletes go the rosiest route. In the rest of the world it's football aka soccer and hockey, not basketball. Though several countries may bring several millions to the table, those are pennies compared to the NBA.
It seems quite fair North America prevails in basketball (as well as its soccer mediocrity) and that from time to time USA loses too. Or it would have been totally disastrously boring spectacle, knowing that the States are unbeatable, even for the Americans themselves.
But it is about the roster. The 2004 team had a much tougher competition than the 72 team. Think of it this way, the soviets had to have officials cheat in order for them to win by less than 5 points, Imagine if they had to play a team with Abdul Jabbar, dr J, Wilt, Rick Barry, Pete Mavarich, Walt Frasier. It would have been a blowout no different from what the 92 dream team did internationally.
If nba/aba players were allowed to play int he Olympics back then, it would have been a blowout

Anyone else notice that if you stopwatch the actual time for the last play that it was more than 3 seconds? It was actually closer to 5 or 6 seconds from time of inbounding to time of basket. I bet the officials manually pressed the buzzer after the basket.

+Tsar-MK Meant to say buzzer instead of basket. From the time the ball entered the court to the time the buzzer sounded was supposed to be 3 seconds but was actually over 5. If you look at the time when the ball leaves the shooting player's hand, it is past the 3 second mark too. The little pump fake took too long.

Wrongly blamed USSR in cheating, becouse i'ts mistake scorer's table (not given timeout right away and timekeeper mistake). Also wrong to say that these mistakes have helped the Soviet Union win - we don't known what would have been the game, if not the judges mistakes. Just one point difference and 3 seconds is a lot in basketball. 50/50 chance.
America does not agree with the result, and I understand them, but if the match does not replay then, the obvious this result will remain in history forever. People who do not agree need to accept this.

The refs ruled toREPLAY the inbound. They did NOT give USSR a time-out. As olympic rules only allow substitutions during time-outs: Soviets substituting the inbound passer Zharmukhamedov withe their most skilled passer Edeshko was AGAINST the rules and should have been resulted with a technical foul.
Exactly. What's worse is that Edeschko never checked in with the scorer, which shows the Soviets themselves knew no timeout had been requested nor granted.

The officials (specifically Artnik Arabadjian, the umpire and who handed the ball to Edeschko for inbound attempts 2 and 3, it was Alzhan Zarmalokumedov on the first) did not notice the illegal substitution, largely because Edeschko didn't check in at the scorer's table, as required. Hard to call a violation that went unnoticed.
