    I agree with the Americans but not for the reasons they said. The issue is whether the Russians called a timely time-out in between Doug Collins' free throws. Either they did or they did not. If they did, then the second free throw should not have occurred, and any replay should start at the second free throw (not at the in bound after the 2nd free throw like what actually occurred). And if the Russians did not call a timely time-out, then there should not have been any replay at all and the Americans should win. If we were to view the situation in the best light for the Russians, that is -- assuming a timely time-out was indeed called, then the replay should start at the second free throw. The fact that the replay did not start at the 2nd free throw but rather at the in-bound renders the entire actual replay invalid.
    Therefore, the best thing the IOC could do is to replay the entire chaotic part now, if that were possible. But since we cannot do that, the next best thing they can do is to take the score before the chaos -- that is, before the second free throw. And since the score was 49-49 at that point, there should be dual gold medals awarded.

    • @HarveyBacktheBeatles
      @HarveyBacktheBeatles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that both sides deserve the gold because if the soviets were given the timeout before the second free throw, then it would have ended up with a 3 second moment that could have gone either way. and if the time out was given after the the first "attempt" occurred then with one second left on the clock a desperation shot would have occurred which could have gone either way. the whole thing boils down to what is fair when it came to a failure to give the timeout at the appropriate time. neither team but neither team lost so it should have been duplicate medals. this documentary by hbo is a little more neutral to the situation and more explanatory. th-cam.com/video/6oIMdwuLe_o/w-d-xo.html. On that one guy says that the game was fair but not square.

      @rodneywaugh8535 No doubt about it, the whole thing was a third rated officiating. However, that's going to happen in any sports event. It's not an excuse or justification. I'm just saying that is the fact. Case in point. Roy Jones junior in 88. Evander holyfield in 84.

    Randy Harvey of the LA Times, *_"The Americans thought at every turn they had been cheated. They probably hadn't been but they still haven't acknowledged that."_*
    *1.* The Soviet's bench called a timeout when Collins was fouled running into the scaffolding. The Soviet bench *did not* call timeout later, when the Soviets went up the court or between Collins' two foul shots. It was before these two incidents.
    *2.* Collins puts the USA ahead with his two baskets.
    *3.* The horn goes off as Collins pops the second - an odd time for the horn to sound, but it sounded as the ball had left Collins' hands. It was an acknowledgement that a timeout should have been awarded earlier.
    *4.* Play resumed with a Soviet inbound *_(1st)_* then the Soviet bench were rightly protesting that their timeout call (called before Collins' baskets) was being ignored with 1 sec left. The ref stops play at 1 sec left.
    *5.* The Ref saws this error and compensated slightly setting the clock back to 3 secs and the ball back to the line for another Soviet inbound *_(2nd)._* *There is nothing wrong with that.*
    *6.* The Bulgarian umpire, not the Brazilian ref, resumed play before the clock was reset to 3 secs allowing play to resume at 1 sec with the *_(2nd)_* Soviet inbound. The US thought the game was over and had won as the horn was sounded. *The Ref saw this error (he is in charge not the umpire) and put matters right resetting the clock to 3 secs and taking the ball back to the line for another Soviet inbound, the **_(3rd)._** There is nothing wrong with that.*
    *7.* The Soviets threw the ball up the court from their _(3rd)_ inbound and popped the winning basket within 3 secs. *Winners !!*
    *The ref did most right - he saw two errors and put matters right.* He should have done more, annulled Collins scores and taken play back to the point that Collins was on the floor and the Soviets called timeout - the ref was unaware that the Soviets called timeout, the scorer on the side never informed him. The USA team were beaten fairly.
    *The USA gripe -* was that Jones the FIBA head, went down to the scorers table and suggested that the clock be reset to 3 secs from 1 sec. He could have suggested taking the play back to when Collins was on the ground, which would have been the fair and right thing to do as that was when the Soviets called timeout. The ref had no need to take any notice of anyone, he was 100% in control.
    *The Soviet gripe -* was that their timeout call was initially ignored. They got 2 secs more in compensation that was it. They should have got more. They made full use of the extra 2 secs so were satisfied.

      But, there is no PROOF that the Soviet coach called timeout BEFORE the foul shots. They claimed they pushed the button, but it didn't sound. Sorry. Collins was at the line, and according to the rules at that time, they couldn't have a timeout.

      It was utter confusion and chaos - which it should not have been. Mistakes were made. It was really unfair to both teams. The Soviets won, but they easily could have lot. I think they should give the U.S. players the gold medals too. Having officials and scorers who couldn't communicate with the coaches and/or each other was a recipe for disaster.

    I remember watching this game in 1972 and the 50-49 USA apparent victory was like a Hollywood movie. Who I really think lost the game was Tom McMillen not guarding the Russian inbound passer. McMillen backing off even with the referee motioning the inbound passer needs to be given a chance to throw the ball did not require McMillen to back off totally.

    Before we got to the terrible three seconds, Hank Iba made a million mistakes that cost the U.S. the Gold. Iba benched 7-3 Tom Burleson because Burleson had his fiancee visit him in his dorm. Then he refused to let his speedy players run, letting the half-court Soviet team build a big lead with very little time to cut into it; the U.S. players had to mutiny and speed up the pace themselves to come back. Tom McMillian was unclear on what the referee's signal meant as he was trying to obstruct the inbounds pass. It was a procedural hand motion to remind players of the distance he must give the inbounder. Thinking he might be on the verge of a technical foul, he backed off so far as to be unable to obstruct the pass, making him effectively out of the play. He started running down court, but could not possibly get to the forecourt in time to be of use. Meanwhile, Iba kept 6-9 top defender Bobby Jones on the bench, and of course, the 7-3 center was not playing. So with players 7-3, 6-11, and 6-9 of no use defensively, the U.S. had 6-2 Kevin Joyce behind Belov, with 6-8 Jim Forbes fronting him.
    The officials and R. William Jones cannot be blamed for any of this.
    Moreover, the referees could have nullified Doug Collins' 2nd free throw and made him shoot it over, because a TO was supposed to be called before it. But they let that free throw, which put the U.S. ahead 49-48, stand. Does that sound like the actions of an international community bent on taking the Gold away from the U.S.?

    Once the ball hit Collins hands for the second free throw the Soviets lost their chance for that time out. The proof is that Collins free throw stood. Dr. Jones and the referees should never be allowed near a bball court again, however, the Americans weren't cheated anywhere near the way they act like they've been cheated. After Collins' second free throw, the Russians were pushing the ball up the court to get one final shot, but the ref jumps in and stops the game with a second left. Is the game over even though there's a second left? And what should happen now? Should the ball be taken out of bounds at mid-court with one second left, or put back at the baseline with 3 seconds left? When the ball gets put back to the baseline, the freakin' idiot ref never waits for the clock to reset (it says 50 seconds left). This only adds to the chaos. As the Russian throws the ball in, the horn sounds before anyone touches the ball. How the Americans think that an entire 3 seconds ran off the clock is laughable. So even though the Americans feel the Russians had two chances now to win the game, that is completely false. The first chance was stopped by the ref walking in and stopping the ball, and the second chance was stopped by the horn after the clock wasn't reset. Would it be fair to give the Americans the gold when the Russians never had a shot to play the last three seconds? And then on the final try, all the Americans had to do was put a 7 footer on the ball (aka the Christian Laettner rule when UK didn't put a man on Grant Hill so he could throw an uncontested throw to Laettner), and not allow such an easy pass. The Russians outplayed the Americans all game long. The Americans have a right to be mad about the incompetent officiating, but they blew the last three seconds on their own. The Russians won this gold medal.

      +Tj Mckenzie you're defeating your own point with your logic. To you're last statement, yes, put a 7 footer in the backcourt and this might be a moot point, but you're saying that the US wasn't cheated and in the same sentence say that 'the freakin idiot ref never waits for the clock to reset'. The 'idiot ref' is the reason that this whole fiasco happened and why the US felt cheated

Kenny Davis says "The Russians inbounded the ball, threw a long pass and the horn sounded. We thought we had won the game." Really? Any moron could tell that three seconds had not elapsed. The horn blows before the Russian player even catches the ball.

      @jackvankirk5696 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Every fiber of my being tells me not to feed this troll, but something about tj makes me think he's actually serious. First and foremost, obviously no one thinks the time between the 2nd inbound pass and the horn (as the Russian player is touching the ball) was 3 seconds (wow, glad we got that out of the way). The issue is that they were able to throw it down the court multiple times. In essence, the refs couldn't keep control of their own game. If collins had missed his free throw when the horn sounded directly in the middle of the potentially game winning free throw, I'm sure USA would have been pissed off. He drained it, so its not really talked about much. Next issue, which actually pertains to the previous one, did the Russian coach successfully try to call a timeout BEFORE collins was handed the ball for his 2nd free throw (through the buzzer thats mentioned in the video). I'm sure they would test the buzzers and everything like that before the game, but again as is mentioned in the video, the Russian coach was very experienced and most likely wouldn't have missed that opportunity. Either way, he was NOT granted that timeout before collins was handed the ball for his second free throw. Then the madness ensued. The rest is history

    • @thomasmckenzie4584
      @thomasmckenzie4584 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree that the officiating was an absolute disgrace, which is par for the course during the Olympic games. This game is nothing compared to the Roy Jones fiasco. My only real point in all of this is that the Russians were really never given a chance for a final shot until the third try. On the first one, they were bringing the ball up court for one final shot and the ref just stops the game. Should he have done this? Hell no. But he did. There was one second left. Should the US have been awarded the gold medal right then and there even though there was one second left? What happens now? Do you give the Soviets the ball at midcourt with a second left, or do you give them the ball on the baseline with 3? On the second one, the clock is showing 50 seconds left. The Soviet inbounds the ball and before anyone touches the ball, the horn sounds. Does anyone really think it took 3 full seconds and that the US should be awarded the game now? It was a mess, but the Soviets still hadn't been given their final three seconds. In all fairness, even with all of the incompetence, the Soviets should've gotten one last chance at the baseline and three seconds. Watch the final play. Why put a seven footer 10 feet off the inbounder? If Burleson is right up in the inbounders face, there is no way he completes a 94 foot pass. Why put two midgets on Belov? As another person on here said, why not put Bobby Jones, a top rated defender on Belov? I know it's a terrible way to lose, and the US can feel cheated, but had the Soviets not had their one last chance, I think everyone in Russia would've said the US cheated.

      What I don't understand is why they kept adding three seconds back. Let them inbound at half court after the timeout with one second left (based on their original inbound). Continuing to give them three seconds is absurd. In any event, the US was absolutely cheated.

    2,02 ms tall. USA team had players in that team with 2,08; 2,10 and even 2,18 ms tall.
    In the last pass Alex Belov takes the ball jumping over a USA player with 2,01 ms tall.
    Tom MC Millan doesn´t press Ivan Edeshco. USA trainer didn´t know what to do.

    Both teams had decent arguments, and in the end, URSS won, having made 1 point more.
    Hundreds of Olympic athletes of all nations thought their medals should have been gold, not silver, think of boxing or many other disciplines where referees, judges, and jury are involved. Most of them had all good reasons, much more than the US team here. However, the 72 Olympic US basketball team remains the only one in history to refuse a medal out of protest. Real sissies who did not understand what the Olympic spirit should be. The most disgraceful things are crying like little babies and the lack of sportsmanship.
    Two team members, Kenny Davis and Tommy Henderson, put it in their living wills that family members could not accept the medals after they die. Grow up for C S ...
    The US press and TV were also ridiculous, this is certainly not the most controversial sports match in history, just one that the US lost and was a bit controversial, with reasons equally shared by the 2 parties, but the Americans made it a big drama showing very poor character. The disappointment is understandable, but not what happened later.
    If I were the IOC I would strip the US team of that medal for insulting the other athletes and the Olympic movement.

      They did not show up for a medal ceremony. How awful!!! BTW, a case could be made that no medals should have been awarded to the USSR team, either. The scorecard for each game is supposed to be signed by the referee. The referee of this game refused to sign the scorecard. So you do not have an official result to give either the USA or the USSR team a medal. The Polish clockkeeper also stated on live TV that the United States, in his opinion, won the game. If ever a medal should be refused this one surely fit the bill.

An Olympic medal winner is better than sore losers in denial like the ridiculous 1972 US basketball team players, all crying sissies who should grow up. They won silver, life is tough, better than nothing.
      The case of dopers is different from contested refereeing, but again Shorter should accept life, he was a great athlete and had other Olympic medals, and there is no conclusive proof the other guy won with drugs or blood doping, not even in the Stasi files.
      The silver and bronze athletes in 7 Tour de France won (in this case by proven cheating) by Lance A. did not get the gold 20 yrs later (and certainly did not get the million dollar prizes the cheater stole for years) and went on living very well, without being sissies and without crying.
      The team US 1972 reminds me of the English team that lost Euro 2020 (or France that lost WC 2022) they accepted medals as second but immediately, all of them, took the medal out of their neck as if ashamed of it. _A long time ago, in a place far far away_ Vladimir Lenin, after overthrowing the Czar ordered workers councils to take over industries in St. Petersburg, Moscow and other Russian cities. He announced these councils of workers would make the decision that would run the new system, which would be socialist, meaning the workers owning and operating the means of production. At first, Lenin also pledged to give the Czarist conquests of Central Asia (such as Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Uzbekistan) their independence. He went back on the independence promise (partly because the U.S. other other western powers sent troops in to fight against his faction in the Russian Civil War), but he also went back on his promise to let the workers councils operate freely.
      But he still claimed the councils were in charge, and since he wanted all the Czarist conquered places to stay unified with the country, he called the whole thing the Union of Council Socialist Republics. The Russian work for "council" is soviet.
