I love this song, mostly because I give the lyrics a lot of interpretations, it seems that is just about a junkie buying drugs, but to me it means much more, it is about the perspective of how do we look at things, how passionate and dependant we can be on someone or something and maybe from the other side it doesn't mean much. In this case, it's the junkie and the dealer, for the junkie it is the most special thing ever, but for the dealer he's a mere junkie. It reminds me about situations were I as the lover and for the person I loved I was nothing more than a simple guy, and this is an important message for life, that we must relativize things. This is what this song has taught me, and for this, it may be one of my favourite songs of all time. With Heroin it's the same story for me, which is also another favourite of mine. My favourite Velvet songs are this one, Heroin and Rock & Roll.
When i first saw that Cale was doing vocals, i first thought "fuck, why?!". But after listening to the whole thing, i think he totally rocked this. Made it his own thing. Personally i like this version better than the original.
Cale's live performances of WFTM are legendary. I have uploaded a video of him performing WFTM, first solo and then with his band, both intense and breathtaking performances. Maybe you want to check them out: th-cam.com/video/GJ6rSrYSAbg/w-d-xo.html Maybe you like them.
Erano più avanti di tutti negli anni ‘60,lo erano nei ‘90,lo sono oggi.Nessuno come loro,il drumming di Moe,il clangore metallico delle chitarre,il piano ipnotico di John.
Preconceptions can make us think that Maureen sucks but it's the opposite...Maureen is a genius! Music -and much less avant garde music- is not about doing something that looks challenging, it is about what you feel and Maureen creates the perfect and ultimate minimalistic drums beat for this song. Abraxas bless her.
Whatever else I listen to/watch I end up back with the VU (and often this). Appalling phrase but they blew my mind off and away in '68 and they still do. The best.
Wow! Why have I never heard this version? It certainly conveys the desperation of being strung out, waiting ...for whoever - absolutely brilliant! :-))
What a night, never imagined it could be surpassed, as the blood began to flow she replied yes. Then V appeared, years later I know yet but none the less she could obliterate the memories of that time with a simple look or smile and forever turn these past glories to dust
@@Syfoll Not only his band members, but almost everyone in rock music. Cale had a classical upbringing, joined the Welsh Youth Orchestra with 14 and learned to play more than 20 instruments. In the early 60's he studied classical and experimental music at Goldsmith's College in London, before he was awarded a Leonard Bernstein scholarship in 1963 for the University of Tanglewood/USA. His tutor there was the experimental composer Yannis Xenakis. Later that year he collaborated with John Cage on an 18 hour rendition of Eric Satie's Vexations. Before bumping into Lou Reed in NYC he worked with La Monte Young and Terry Riley as part of the Dream Syndicate in 1964. I discovered JC in the early 80's and have seen him live about 20 times. Each of those gigs was a completely different affair, because he permanently rearranges his songs, either style wise, through different instrumentation or by changing the musical structures of the melodies. Considering that after his departure from the Velvets he went on to produce the debut lp's of Iggy's Stooges, Patti Smith's Horses, Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers and inventing the goth sound with Nico on The Marble Index, there is only one conclusion I can think of: pure musical genius! As Lou Reed once said: I hope that one day John Cale will be recognized as the Beethoven of his time.
@@ForARide I don't know how to say it without sounding arrogant or rude, but I already knew all that :). I'm a fan of Cale's, and a huge fan of Nico and VU. But thank you anyway.
How many artists and members of bands influenced by the Velvets do you think were in the crowd at that reunion concert? I’m willing to bet it’s too many to list!
I think the lyrics should not be "Waiting for MY man" but instead "THE man" just like the name of the song. John Cale singing it correctly (IMO) is so cool and certainly my favorite version of "Waiting For The Man".
Cale had been performing IWFTM since the mid 70's live, either with Band or solo. And as his performances of this song were far more convincing than any live takes of Lou, they possibly decided John to sing the lyrics here. Convince yourself: th-cam.com/play/PLNINWcxxj9hHREhUH6k-p2MZgk5Ld17AO.html
No, that's not how the song goes. It may be the snare part on paper, but her drum sound is awful and the feel is wrong. It's missing the twitch that made the part work on the recording.
Nope, that doesn't quite cut it. The twitchiness comes from the timing of the hits. The house mix is out of Tucker's control but the sound of her hits is her prerogative. She didn't have the right snare drum, and that's on her.
This is fucking terrible!!! I love the velvet underground. This is typical of the shit I saw Lou Reed perform in 2004. He stopped caring about his music long before that, it seems.
i think he still cared, to hear his interviews later in his life, he loved playing live, im 35 i saw him 2006 and im with you he was kinda lazy, but then i saw him a couple years after that at Carniege and it was amazing. felt like i was experiencing true Art, some shows will be ebetter than others ya know?
and everybody who was there reunited their band
Genius
Kool comment
Even New Order reunited in 1993
I love how John adds that 'WAITING! - waiting for the man...' bit 😎 that addition makes all the difference
Moe, You rock on that one drum more than any others with large kits.
Lou, RIP
I love how the whole band is smiling at JC by the end of the song.

JC is The Man- Always has been and always will be. The true genius of the Velvets.
"Here he comes...White Boy watcha doin' up town...". Good recovery there JC!
not reaLLy
Uptown is one word.
Classically trained musicians , rare to find that talent these days
JC nails it. What a great vibe. Too bad they couldn't make it happen. Egos. RIP Lou and Sterling.

Harold Dutton true Lou reed was one of the many performers who got worse at performing the older he got

Absolutely brilliant
um, this one is the one
I always loved his Jerry Lee Louis piano-smashing on the original

Have to admit I was skeptical when I first started watching this because Lou isn't singing it, but it's fantastic! John Cale really is outstanding.
Very gentle from Lou
I love it when he sings "All Tomorrow's Parties." It's as good as the Nico version, and that's a bold claim.

Spot fucking on .... ;)
I absolutely can't get enough of John's amazing talent. He has the same look as my grandad and me. Must be the celtic genes?
Whatever else I listen to/watch I end up back with the VU (and often this). Appalling phrase but they blew my mind off and away in '68 and they still do. The best.
most important band in history
Wow! Why have I never heard this version? It certainly conveys the desperation of being strung out, waiting ...for whoever - absolutely brilliant! :-))
My new favorite rendition. Spellbinding.
Love this version
How totally brilliant was that .
It doesnt get better than this.

Love this version. The live Lou and Bowie version is also great.
Same here
You know just how good JC IS when LR and MT smile!
Well, he is better than all of them in terms of music knowledge and instrumentation

Avant guard rock .. brilliant.
TIMELESS!!!!!
Pure raw rocknroll:-)
wherever you are: lou and sterling!
Love the guitar sound on this one (and throughout the concert) but as much as I like Cales voice I think Lou will always do this one a bit better.
Bad ass!!!
love
Cale totally made this his own.
I saw it in Hamburg. it was magical.... everyone except nico of course
awesome
i dont care 'bout junk or any prostitute fact , just there the poundin' & hypnotic riffs 're ahead of their tymes !!! ....
fair play cale, nice alternate version
How many artists and members of bands influenced by the Velvets do you think were in the crowd at that reunion concert? I’m willing to bet it’s too many to list!
By the way I had the album this is on and I always imagined John walking around "waiting for the man" on stage while he sang....
Look up influential 1960s rock bands in the dictionary and you'll find Velvet underground
John Cale... mito assoluto
Moe rocking it
The root of Bryan Ferry ;-)
John Cale, great. And you can hear romeo and juliette from the new york album ... Lou´s guitar. I love it. R.I.P.
My sister (who is not much into r&r) heard Romeo had Juliette turned to me and said Wow! The guitar sounds fantastic
Moe keeps the beat!
This song reminds me of The Modern Age by The Strokes
The Modern Age reminds me of this song
Don't know them but Modern Lovers were part of them.
I think the lyrics should not be "Waiting for MY man" but instead "THE man" just like the name of the song. John Cale singing it correctly (IMO) is so cool and certainly my favorite version of "Waiting For The Man".
its all about john cale.
If you can do better brilliant version love it but then who am.i
👏♥️👏
Where, and what date was this concert? Moe, Lou and John! ❤
Why did JC sing this one instead of LR?
Because JC is as wild and dangerous than LR

Uffffffff, qué rollo.
go sterling go

Not that I'm complaining but....why is Cale singing this?
If Jimmie Page was singing Stairway to Heaven at a Led Zeppelin reunion show, do you think people might be curious as to why he was?

I'm waiting for my man, 26 dollars in my hand ))))
Didn't Lou have a throat infection or something for some of these shows?
I have seen at least one other show of this tour and Cale still sang this song so i think it was the plan
um, good

This sound wrong... So wrong!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
No.
Maureen Tucker is really, really, *really* boring to listen to live.
+derekmok But it is hard to beat her meter.
+derekmok this is how the song goes. Why change perfection?
No, that's not how the song goes. It may be the snare part on paper, but her drum sound is awful and the feel is wrong. It's missing the twitch that made the part work on the recording.
the sound is out of her control, and the feel is dictated by the shitty guitar playing and piano.
