The line "When I look at myself, I dont see, the man I wanted to be, somewhere along the line I slipped off track" rings so true for me & probably countless others...lyrics like that are priceless
Martyn - I really insightful analysis of a great song. It paints a world we all inhabit with real economy of words, which his is great skill few singer songwriters possess. The ability to bring self confession and the ability to identify with the audience and make them feel they are not alone, is undoubtedly his long-term appeal to his loyal fans. Your concert in Sheffield at the Greystones was very intermate and the crowd really listened and only made noise when encouraged to do so. I came away with loads of CDs , a signed poster, a great Springsteen cover to end the show "If I should fall behind", but more importantly a new voice with another view of the human condition. Thankyou Bossfansheff
Most times you hear a cover and you know it’s a cover. Had I never heard of Springsteen and you told me this guy wrote it, I’d believe you. Kick ass voice and a great version of a classic song
One of the greatest songs of all time. "bird on a wire outside my motel room. But she aint singin'. Girl outside a church in june. But the churchbells aint ringin'" This song is about his divorce. It speaks for itself. A very sad song about divorce. You are supertalented. You nailed it. I loved this version. One of the best things on youtube. Strong work!!!!
This sounds GREAT! I had a guitar teacher 30 years ago who had a tab version of this in open position, with the D string tuned up to E. Who does that? Nobody. I've found out since then that most of her tabs were wrong.
I was 23 going to Ranger School when this song came out. Stepping into an uncertain future. I felt known by this song then and i still do today.. Thank you for giving this song the respect it is due.
Semper Fi Army dog. I was 2 years out of the "Misguided Children" , at 24, and starting a journey of job to job, girl to girl and bar to bar. Things weren't working out very well. Too many frequent relocations as a kid growing up , so never really figured out what to do with my life. And a potential wife got pregnant and married while I was in Okinawa. But finally did marry in '94 and had a daughter. Thank God for that. Marriage didn't last though. Too much damage from the past. Kind of a "The River", Jackson Cage" kinda thing, and of course this song. Outstanding memory though in fall '83 of listening to the Darkness On The Edge Of Town album for the first time with a six pack of PBR in a trailer outside of Camp Lejeune. Music and beer; Two buddies that have never let me down.
Great job sir. You’ve truly done this tune justice. Not only is this my favorite Springsteen song, it’s my favorite song period. It relates to my childhood when our coal fire went out at night often and I’d be the one restarting it before school. And to my adult life as well…
God bless you...this is how songs should be sung....I have been playing for a lifetime...as simple as this song may be, your interpretation is beautiful
This has always been one of my favorite Springsteen songs. I guess I didn't fully appreciate why until now. What I always liked was how Bruce took perhaps the most frustrating feeling of life... "one step up and two steps back" and turned it into a dance with the love of his life.
Thank you so much Martyn Joseph. Not just a superb performance of a classic, not only a truly insightful analysis of The Boss's artistry but an in depth lesson in the whole craft of writing a song that reaches out and grabs you in a place you didn't even know you had. Respect
He's right. We all make mistakes and we don't always live up to our values. All we can do sometimes is forgive ourselves and forgive others. It's alright....
Amy Musiel , first time iv ever heard of this guy was today, my mate put me on to him, I’m very impressed, I can see immediately, Martyn is the real deal, I fully intend to check his music out now 👍
He does perform this song well. If he's this blown away by Springsteen's boilerplate lyrics on divorce in this song, keep him away from Blood on the Tracks.
Ha - yes, with the exception of the “danced as the evening sky faded to black” bit and play on dancing / one step up and two steps back it’s pretty standard lyrically but the arrangement and melody is the poignant part. Blood on the Tracks is more mature and has more depth of course but ultimately Dylan doesn’t connect with as many people as Springsteen.
The line "When I look at myself, I dont see, the man I wanted to be, somewhere along the line I slipped off track" rings so true for me & probably countless others...lyrics like that are priceless
Amen, Brother Paul.

Absolutely amazing dare I say better done then the Boss 😩🙌
He is a great poet, does it in verse but he has an acute and redeemed mind, his opining shows as much.
❤️

Spellbound.
You'll like this Bruce?
Thank God he never took up Golf
Beautiful.
But who is the silly little schoolgirl giggling?
That's the rules, every gig has to have at least one idiot who doesn't 'get it.
