23 years later, and I still love my VooDoo. I really enjoyed watching this, and so pleased it's for a great cause. Thanks for all you do for us vintage bike lovers.
I’ve got an early 90s Rockhopper, 90s Ross and a 2000s GT in my garage. All need restoration. Your channel motivates me. Finishing up a 94 Norvara and then on to the rockhopper. This paint job is great. The yellow really pops off the blue.
Really liked the restoration👍. Loved the quality vintage components and wish I could find the same. Those XT v-brakes are not easy to come by these days. Just a thought; after all the super restorations that you have put up for us to enjoy don’t you think it’s time to invest in an ultrasonic cleaner? I got a 10litre commercial one last year for about $120 and have never looked back. Filled with a commercial degreaser, parts come out spectacularly clean with no retained small grit.
@@Fifmut what kind of size stuff do you want to use in them?.. I have a couple of ultrasonic cleaners..but some for jewellery, some for smaller tool type sizes upto say a shoe size and some for say a big Cheesegrater minimum (sorry for the chhese grater ref..lol..went a bit braindead there for a minute lol)
Man that's a cool frame! Who doesn't want a bike with voodoo on the side of it! That's a nice paint job as well I've never heard of this brand but it looks by the components and the quality of it,it was a pretty penny back in his day
@oldshovel ….. watching your videos is a form of therapy for me, love seeing these bikes be given a new lease of life. Well done from London and keep up the great work 👍🤘
I was recently in SLC on a work trip and checked out The Bicycle Collective. What a cool place! Many things I would have loved to take home with me but, unfortunately, they would not have fit in the overhead in the plane!
Beautiful build as always. We have a bicycle collective here in New Hampshire. I agree and highly recommend that anyone who likes to wrench at home get involved if they have similar locations nearby.
Nice! I know that you can't paint them all, but I do like to see the transformations of the bikes when you pain them. Also very cool thing with the Collective. I wish that we had more of that around my neck of the woods.
Great restoration the bike really looks nice just a question are they the same wheels as they was really buckled at the start if they are could you show how you straightened them 👍
Fun paint job! I'm in the middle of sanding and repainting a 1996 Brodie Quantum. Fun bike to ride but the frame had seen better days. I didn't realize how much effort it was to remove the paint. I don't have access to a garage or workshop so I've just been sanding with elbow grease in my backyard and when I ran out of that I picked up an orbital sander. I did try a non-toxic paint and varnish remover but that did nothing. I also tried scraping with a knife but I wasn't getting very far (perhaps I needed a bigger and sharper knife?). I'm almost done with sanding and moving on to spray painting soon. It's hard sourcing spray.bike here in Toronto. I found a shop in Montreal carrying some cans but the choices were limited. I'm looking forward to finishing up this project and riding my retro MTB in a couple of weeks' time. Hope you feel better soon!
hope you recover quick, awesome build as usual. while watching it i kept thinking the ultimate retro Collab would be you doing the cosmetic resto and rj the bike guy doing the mechanical resto.
A fantastic job as usual, OldShovel, but this time I also wondered if you were going to change the drivetrain because it looked so good (you didn't), as well as the Marzocchi Z1 (my favorite), which is always worth keeping. Happy trails!
Would be great if you did a tutorial on how to set up gears, I always struggle to get gears shifting smoothly and end up paying an expert to do it for me.
Interesting and relaxing video, as always. I could be a nerd here but I have a suggestion: why don't print a sticker with a QR-CODE pointing to the restoration video and use that sticker during frame painting? Anyone who, in the future, will buy the bike could enjoy the process of his/her bike restoration.
I have a ‘00 Specialized Rockhopper that I’d like to turn into a gravel bike. I’m looking for suggestions on drop bars/headset and brake system. It’s a 21” and I’m 6’4” which is why I bought a ‘22 Trek Boone that I love! Just doin this for fun. I removed the shocks but the forks are designed for disc brakes. I’m thinking of doing a front disc, rear rim brake setup. Any suggestions?
I thought you'd lost ur mind when You started hitting it with that screwed up spray painted plasitic bag.. but whaddya know?.. that's a decent looking paint effect!.. I shoulda known better really.. You are one hell of a bike painter..great work as per usual.
You have a few choices, two are sketchy. First, keep looking for a 1” fork, there are some out there but they are rare. Second, you can get a 1 1/8” headset and mill down the internal flanges to fit the 1” head tube (it weakens the headset but a lot of folks have done it. Third, ream out the head tube to fit a 1 1/8” headset, this works if the head tube is thick enough, I did it on my Schwinn Klunker build (see the first video of it).
@@oldshovel I guess if you're going to go that route, I'd probably take 1/16th of an inch off of both, minimizing the weakness. You'd need a lathe to do it properly on the headset though
Une restauration simple mais efficace avec comme toujours son lot de petites techniques pour les plus bricoleurs d'entre nous qui souhaiterait tenter ce type de customisation @ home ^^.
You find the coolest bikes man, and are really bailing these paint jobs. Now all I want to know is what are you going to choose for pedals? Maybe some blue Rockbros?
Very nice, what grease did you use for the headset? Too bad the booties were missing on the brakes, they help to keep some of the dirt out of the cable housing. Is a chainstay protector used when the bike is ridden? Wondering how tough that paint is. Thanks for another great video 👊
Great work, as always! I'm working on my own restoration and wondered what grade sandpaper do you use on the cranks and how do you de-rust-ify the heads on chainring bolts, etc.? Thank you!
Does that 9-speed rear mech work properly with a 7 speed chain, shifters and cassette? Are you running a 9 speed chain to compensate for the thinner outer plates? Love the bike and that place looks awesome, could spend so long and too much money browsing and buying bits and bikes from there, shame it's a 12 hour flight away
Measure the shell size, then measure the square pegs end to end. That's how they're sold. If you are converting from 3x to 1x you'll need to get a shorter bracket to keep the chainline the same.
Strange cable routing on this frame. Right side controls going to the right side of the frame is really awkward. That, and the little cable guide on the seat tube makes me think it's a pre-V-brake frame.
As a Brit listening I had to check twice when you said "Voodoo Wanga" at 23 seconds in! 🤣Hope your cold clears up soon. Maybe take a few days off work and make some more awesome videos instead.

I find these video's much more satisfying, than watching video's of $10k carbon bikes. There is something appealing about old retro steel bikes
Fantastic restoration! I enjoy every 3x7, 3x8 or 3x9 bike restoration you do. It takes me back to my beginnings in MTB... Congratulations!
Finally! A resto project that you just put back the way it was! Respect!

Thanks for the inspiration! Just finished my 1995 hardrock!
It was great meeting you yesterday, I can't wait to see the next video of the bike you picked up at the SLC bike collective.
Absolutely love this, the golden age of mountain bikes for me! That knife scraping off the paint made my teeth hurt though 😫
It always makes me cringe too! 😬

The dark blue colour on its own would have been perfect I reckon.
I see the Morakniv putting work 😂 great video!
Nice to see a project with painting. It's my favorite part.
Another beautiful, quality restoration and some great words ! Thanx again !

Love the randomness of the paint job- literally never to be replicated- anywhere ! :)
The Wanga was my first real mountain bike. It was a little older than this one. It was a nice riding bike.
Lovely transformation.
As someone with a more recent Voodoo all I can say is man I wish the paint came off as easy as it did for you! Awesome restoration as always!
I’ve removed both paint and powder coating with gel paint remover. Saves time.
