Also, a "1% Encounter Only" challenge, where you only use Pokemon who have a 1% encounter rate, could be fun depending on the game.
Having to catch at least 6 mons with a 1% encounter rate doesn't sound fun

@@ratspew932 Honestly not that bad with speed up. Dunsparce, Yanma, Marill, Jynx, Snubbull and Chansey would be a unique team.
I still want Ruby with a team of Blastoise, Golem, and Octillery. Mystery Dungeon said it couldn’t be done.
Why would that be impossible? That's a crazy powerful team.
@@ricardoj376 It’s a campaign idea that was brought up in response to an story beat in Mystery Dungeon where a team of Octillery, Gollem and Blastoise all lose to Groudon. MDB jokingly said that he wanted to do that team as a challenge run.

Me: "Ackchually, Hoothoot learns Confusion at level 34 in Gen 2. Noctowl at 41.
That said, like other commenters have already pointed out, Girafarig would be really useful for your Normal-only run as a Normal/Psychic type.
Challenge Idea: Pokemon Red using only signature moves.
Waterfall/twinneedle/crabhammer/spore/bonemerang/etc.

i feel like this could even be expanded on. "pokemon _____ with only that generation's signature moves". so even if a pokemon is the only one able to use the move. it isn't allowed outside of the generation it was introduced
Yes! But also, this challenge would be trivial. Isn't spore the signature move of Paras and parasect?
There are 2 reasons why your Snorlax out speed Red’s even though it was 15 Lvs lower.
1)in these early gens obtaining certain badges grants your Pokemon stat buffs.
2) A players Pokemon gets stat experience. For beating Pokemon in battle. It’s a lot like EV’s in later gens.
These two combined allowed your under leveled Snorlax to out speed.
Addittionally, at least in gen 1, all trainers had Mid DVs for all their stats (8 in everything except for attack which is 9). So if gen 2 is the same, MDB's snorlax could have had a higher speed DV than red's.
he probably forgot about #1, he says in more of the recent gen 1 challenges at some point in the video "and i completely forgot. no i techincally failed because i'm not restarting a match every time the enemy hits me with a status move, which activates the badge boost glitch"
Fun fact: Gen 2 Sleep Talk can trigger Rest even when you are asleep, which is why Gen 2 Player battles have by far and away the average largest turn count.
Yeah, gen2 has lots of stall tactics. Not gen5 level, but gen2 is still a lot

So as far as how you outsped red's snorlax with yours despite being much lower level, part of that is because you get boosts to stats from having certain badges. But npcs (even those who canonically have those badges) don't get those boosts. Anyways, going to keep asking for black/white with a ralts. Comments are good for the youtube algorithm.

When Heart Gold came out, I got a Kangaskahn before Whitney because Kanga can be caught on the first Poke Walker route if you go for a long walk irl. She ended up being a cornerstore of my team and my favorite Johto Normal type I've used.
And while Kanga in HG is fun, I'll still recommend Stunky in Heart Gold for a 4th week in a row.
Kanga is not a johto mon but that is a very fun memory!
Ooh, having done a Stunky run for fun in Platinum years ago I would love to see MDB take on that challenge.
Great run, MDB! A little shocked you didn’t use Girafarig! It would likely have helped with some of the physical walls due to access to STAB Psychic (and I think it learns T-Bolt).

I wish Girafarig would have been on this team. I used one in Crystal back in the day and it was so good! I think it even learned crunch and psychic, so it was such a good pokemon on my team.

The fight Vs red really shows the importance of EVs and badge boosts in this game. Its such a handicap not having them

(13:24) Well, it helped that you got two flinches with your Stomps. Clair probably was indeed trying to spam Surf with her Kingdra, but only successfully got one of them off.
(23:33) Outrage is a special attack in this game, so Reflect would not have softened it at all, though it would've halved the damage from Hyper Beam if he decided to use that.
(28:30) And that's game! Snorlax was certainly the MVP after you caught it.
If you want more runs which aren't solo challenges: paired version exclusives (e.g. beat Pokemon Black with only Reuniclus and Gothitelle, where you use the UPR to start with Solosis since you can't catch it in the wild) and pseudoexclusives (e.g. beat Pokemon Black with only Lilligant and Whimsicott, where you start with Cottonee and use the ingame trade to acquire Petilil; Throh and Sawk work similarly).
i have a suggestion for a run: you can pick any game, but you can't purchase any items from any Marts or street vendors. handouts are fine, but otherwise you have to go full scavenger
Should have grinded for an aipom, I mean its so amazing in gen 2, with worse stats than furret and a worse learnset, is super hard to find, and cant get at the earliest till after your sentrent would evlove.
Hey, MDB! Normal types are always fun to watch due to their sheer move type variety. On an unrelated note, that nostalgia trip going all the way back to the first ever Normal Run was kinda heartwarming. As a symbol of our appreciation for you, and because it's also a normal type, this would be the perfect time for a Platinum Lopunny Solo!

I did a normal type run in Ultra Moon. It was one of my favorite runs, next to my ground type run. Dunsparce was a cornerstone of my team
I am guessing the reason Red's Pokemon are so weak for their level is so that players will see the high level and train to be that strong, then feel really good when they wipe him out.

Can you Beat Oblivion, Poison only run?
The rules are pretty simple:
- you can only use Poison as a means of dealing damage
- when using alchemy, you can only make poison
of course, you can add rules as you see fit
As usually, I'm writing this before you ever did the challenge

@@icephoenix174 one would definetly need to adjust the rules to account for that, but I mostly mean poison has to be your main source of damage, in the event there is no way to do damage purely through poison.
This seemed like a surprisingly balanced team run. Even though there were stronger and weaker team members, it seemed like each of them was critical (or very useful at a minimum) for at least one battle somewhere
I have been watching and rewatching your pokemon challenges for a little bit now and this run inspired me to do my own normal only run in scarlet! I used Maushold, Hisuian Zoroark, Grafaiai, Farigiraf, Cyclizar, and Arboliva. It was pretty fun!

MDB I fully understand the childhood challenge run memories as I also did them when I was little I loved fire types and only ever had them on my team and in kingdom hearts I did speed runs with my friends in elementary school ( my fastest time as a kid was KH2 at 7 hours and I was the second fastest at school)

Been really enjoying these monotype runs. I think playing Heart Gold with only fire types would be interesting. I say Heart Gold specifically because you can get some fire type earlier than you can in Gen II.

You can get the first pokemon after the 3rd badge but you can use the randomizer to make one of the starters the ranch's grotto pokemon with hidden abilities!
(Sap sipper marill, scrappy lillipup, rattled dusnparce)
Grottos can take a long time but I know you'll grind it anyway

Normal runs are my favorite monotype runs because they're always more fun than expected and often with odd strats
You should do a run where you can only use pokemon whose national dex number is prime.
Primes start 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, etc.
Which would be (potentially) ivysaur, venusaur, charmeleon, squirtle, metapod, weedle, pidgeotto, rattata, ekans, nidoranF, nidoqueen, vulpix, zubat, etc.
Obviously easier if you do it in Kanto, but quite difficult if you start in a later region.
For a Johto run, you'd have 157, 163, 167, 173, which are typhlosion, hoothoot, spinarak, and cleffa. There are more but i don't feel like writing them out lol

How about doing challenges where you don't use TMs or no PokeCenters again.
I think you've demonstrate enough that you can usually brute force your way through with enough grinding when limited to certain Pokemons
I'm guessing you didn't catch a Snubbull to get a Granbull because you saw it has 1% encounter rate on 1 route (38) and is known to flee. Oh and most likely to make it more difficult then it already it was (trust me I did a normal type only run in Crystal, back in 2021, it was rough), you avoided the gift spearow on route 35. That would have made the game a literal cake walk. And can i just say, it sucks in gen 2, you cannot get a Porygon until you reach Kanto's game corner meaning you can never use a Porygon2 in Johto in a legit playthrough (even without mentioning the item trade requirement for evolution).

Mono-type runs are fun. Looking at mono-types is how I realized there are NO non-legendary pure flying-type pokemon. So a flying-type mono run is literally impossible in most generations, and would require a legendary in others.
Not quite! Rokidee/Corvisquire are pure flying, it's not until Corvinight they get steel

I think you could catch an Aipom in the Ilex Forest with Headbutt. Not a good pokemon, but a normal type is a normal type I guess

Pokémon any Gen with the first 6 Pokémon you find in any route, but you can’t evolve them. You can swap out after gym leaders.
Pokémon Any Gen but only using RNG moves (Psywave, Magnitude, etc)
Pokémon Any Gen but you can only use standard poke balls
Pokémon BW2 with only Ns Pokémon
Pokémon HGSS with only headbutt tree and sweet scent Pokémon
26:15 About 2 years ago I did a Crystal mono-Ground run, and I decided to try fighting Red when my team was Lv 60, and I won.
My team was "the 6 Ground Type families of Gen 2" - Tyranitar, Steelix, Quagsire, Donphan, Piloswine, Gligar.
My Starter was Larvitar (enabled by the Randomizer).
This might be a johto run but I'll make the suggestion anyway:
Heart Gold with only headbutt tree pokemon
No girafirig... what a shame. That thing could've solved a lot of your initial special problems...

A few runs that I find it could be fun for you to do:
- Any game with only attacks with a base power below 60.
- X or Y with only Greninja with Ash's moveset (Cut, Aerial Ace, Water Shuriken and Double Team)
- Sword/Shield with only TM moves

What are the odds that MDB will use the new "Trainer Red" Qumu remix for the Red fight? Also, just finished watching the Nancy Drew let's play, and despite what you'd think, I watched ALL of the "Superdoku" episode.
Pokémon Challenge suggestion: You are free to go with the game of your choice, but the challenges is using only middle evolution stage pokémon. (For Exemple: If you pick Bulbasaur as your starter, you can only battle with Ivysaur.) You are not allowed to use pokémon who's has no evolution or only 1, it must be a pokémon with a 2 stage linear Evolution. So pokémon like Eevee or Tyrogue are not allowed, but pokémon like Oddish, Poliwag or Ralts are allowed.

#MDBA - Challenge idea:
Gen 3 (Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald) with only baby Pokémon
It's so limited (only Azurill, Wynaut, Igglybuff and Pichu available) and it could be insanely difficult, but I think you would come up with a solid strategy to get through it
I have an idea for a fun challenge, One that means you could even use Drowzee. Can you beat Pokemon Black (Or any game from gen's 5 ,6 or 7) with only the move Assist? Purrloin learns Assist at level 6 so it'd be the starter, Then if you get a male Purrloin you can breed it with other's to get more Pokemon. I think this would be a great wacky challenge since the more Pokemon on your team the more random the move is.
For any that don't know Assist uses a random move known by any of the user's party Pokémon, With some exceptions. So even Pokemon that can't use Assist would still be useful if they have good moves that Assist can use. Drowzee is in the Human-Like Egg Group so If you want one with Assist you'd need a Spinda since they're in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so can breed with Purrloin and Drowzee. You could also use a Chimchar as a starter if you give it Assist as an Egg Move, They're also in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so a male one can breed the move into any Pokemon with Assist.
I did an Aipom only run in Crystal before
The only attacking move I could hit the ghost gym with was Mud Slap x-x
Why only Mud Slap? Because Aipom in Gen 2 doesn't learn Dig, which is dumb lol
Wait this man went the entire game without Girafarig???? Thats a Normal/Psychic type the bane of Morty's ghosts! Dang.
Edit: It can even Learn Thunder to help with the Slowbro! Dang!
24:20 Snorlax isn't just the best normal type in GSC, it's THE best pokémon, period. Snorlax dominates smogon OU and is very good in ubers as well, it can easily compete with monsters like Lugia, Ho-Oh and Mewtu. So yeah, obviously a must have in any run you're allowed to use it.
If it makes you feel better about how long you have been doing challenge runs, by the time I played Pokemon for the first time [granted it was a little after their release, I got red and Crystal at the same time from a roommate in exchange for back rent he owed me] I had been playing all RPGs with a challenge set I came up with from playing Dragon Warrior: NO SHOPS. I had noticed something that annoyed me in one of my favorite RPGs, DW3: in every dungeon, there was at least 1 copy of gear that was either sold at the previous town or was on par or weaker than that town's gear, making either cash grinding or box looting pointless. My solution: shopping is for chumps, just use what the monsters drop and what is found in chests/given in story. The only exceptions are mandatory purchases and alternative shops like the casino or Small Medals.
Imagine playing gen 1/2 without buying stuff, just game corner and items found in the field. This includes pokeballs. I still play like that to this day. When I do randomizers, i disable shops. 1 other exception is abilities, if they have to be purchased [like in Final Fantasy 7 or 12] I allow myself to purchase 1 copy of any one that I have no chance of finding in the wild.
Why didn’t you get Jigglypuff on the way to Cherrygrove? Did you decide not to use it? Btw: Yeah, you pronounced Relicanth correctly. “Reli” like in “Relic” and canth from Coelacanth, the fish the mon is based upon

Awful, painful idea: Gen 2 (Crystal preferably bc a few extra fights) with only grass types. It'd be like a chikorita only run, but slightly less painful. Bellsprout line with sludge bomb and normal moves is probably the best coverage you get.
you can but other then Snorlax MOST kind of SUCK even Milktank is better when its NOT in your party ie when you fight Whitney's and NOT the OTHER way around.
Despite what M&JTV says Miltank is one of my most favorite Gen 2 Pokémon and Shinies. I hunted for it hard in Heart Gold and FINALLY got one! ✨🐮
Day 3 of suggesting a solo Pokémon run using a really strong Pokémon (eg. Mewtwo) but in a language you can't speak, so that the challenge comes from game knowledge rather than the strength of your team. (I forgor to comment for, like, 6 days, but I'm back now. :P)

You should do a challenge in gen 2 or HGSS where you only use Pokemon that you find in the night (gastly, spinarak, noctowl) or evolve during ( umbreon) that would be a fun run especially in gen 2 because it'll be much harder ! Btw love your videos, I've watched every one til now 😊

Just a suggestion I thought of is "Pokemon emerald with only one slaking." You think that could be easy considering that slaking is a pseudo-legendary BUT the truant ability could make it a bit challenging but then again I don't know for sure.
