  • I picked up some heat control window film at my local home improvement store in hopes of reducing the summer temperature in my garage. See the links below for the parts and tools I used:

    Excellent tips! Taping to the table to remove the backing is a very helpful tip.

    Nicely done Mike, great work. I live in Orlando and my power bill is out of control this summer, so I've looked into window film in the last few weeks, but what I've heard is that the film being on the inside of the window means all that heat gets trapped inside the glass itself. Will be interested to see how this works out for you long term! My first house had film but it was old single pane windows, I would imagine the risk (if there is one, and not just online nonsense) is with double pane.

      Thanks! Window damage was a big concern of mine when considering whether or not to install the film. The last thing I wanted to do was to damage expensive windowpanes in an attempt to keep out some heat. I did a bunch of research and felt confident that my windows would be just fine. I only applied film to my garage windows, but it has been over a year with no issues. As long as you buy name brand film and follow the instructions, I think it's perfectly safe. If this type of film was leading to windows needing to be replaced, there would be tons of angry customers ranting online and window film companies would be out of business. :)

    I've heard tint on dual pane causes the window to crack?

      I heard the same thing and did some research before deciding to install. I've kept an eye on the windows and haven't had any problems.

    Will this stop the vinyl windows in my yurt from off-gassing plastic fumes into the yurt?

    • @Mikeattempts
      @Mikeattempts  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I wouldn't think so because the film only covers the glass, not the vinyl. I assume the vinyl would heat up and off-gas the same either way. I'm no pro though, it's just a guess.

    Did this make a big difference in keeping heat out?

    • @Mikeattempts
      @Mikeattempts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was worth it, there's a noticeable difference. However, I don't have before and after temperatures so it's hard to say how many degrees cooler the garage is now. It still gets hot in the summer, just not quite as hot.

      It's a 10 to 15 degree difference don't know where they get 70+% heat blockage from but with a heat thermal unit it was 10 to 15 degrees less

    How easy or difficult is it to remove? Is it renter friendly?

    • @Mikeattempts
      @Mikeattempts  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm no pro but I think they make a version with "EZMount" adhesive that can be easily peeled off. It seems like the regular adhesive requires a store-bought spray and a razor blade to remove. Supposedly you can make your own removal spray by mixing 8 oz of water with 4 oz of ammonia, and 1 tsp of dish soap. Depending on how old the film is, it could end up being a pain to remove.
