I’m 18 and I bought one of these as my first car. It’s still my daily. Love it. When I looking at it, I asked if it had ac. The guy said, “yeah it has a 2:70” and I asked what’s that? “Roll down both windows and go 70”

I remember my mom had one of the first Hondas in Nebraska, when it just said CVCC on the back. I was 4 and would ride on the center console behind the shifter, no seat belt let alone a child seat. You could do that back then. My mom didn't like it actually and everyone called it a tin can cause it rusted out in a few years.

I want no options except AC and cruise control. Alarms fuck everything all up and go off every time you fart loud enough. Electric locks and windows? Why? It's pretty undemanding to simply lean to where the window or lock you want to operate is and operate it. Leather sucks. Electronic stuff like traction control, auto dimming mirrors, etc. is all just more crap to go wrong. I wish we could still get cars and trucks somewhat like this.

I love the honesty of older Honda’s. I had a 97 DX coupe and I always thought it personified the thoughtfulness of the people who designed it. Like where every other car was a PITA to work on, by design, the Civic was a joy. Things were where you’d expect them. There were just no gotchas. It was a car designed by car people which you don’t seem to find these days.

My 1991 emerald green DX Hatch went through family duty, 2 teenage daughters driving to high school and survived quite nicely up to 300,000 miles when the thieves got her. We still have regular "Remember our Hatch" moments. I even made a TH-cam video of remembrance called "The Green Jelly Bean - Honda 1991 Hatchback". If the thieves had stayed home that night, I would still be driving that Hatch.

I had a lot of miles on that car, many roadtrips, backseat stories, etc. It's everything you said and more, a perfect car in so many ways. Exceeded all expectations, easy to work on, nothing really ever broke, fun, and not once did I ever consider if the thing was fast enough, or had a big enough engine, or...whatever. I loved and miss it. I recall averaging nearly 40mpg on long trips...no AC and a stick!

Back in 94, our friend Ed (coincidence not intended) was the "older guy who drove" in high school while the rest of us were a year to a year and a half away. Ed drove a red ED6 and even then, riding in it, I recall feeling just a tad safer than being on a Honda ELITE surrounded by facia made from used cans of crystal pepsi. Ed was the singer in my first and last cheesy punk rock band, the bands that followed would bastardize different genres. He was a bit of a spaz who listened to Nirvana and REM at top volume through the piercing, choked treble saturated excuse for a stereo the ED6 provided while periodically knocking the loose rearview mirror back into place. He listened fanatically in the way the younger of the grunge cult millennials do today considering Curt Cobain to be their Jim Morrison. He once said he liked to go into the center of mosh pits and flap his arms while screaming "I'm a fucking pterodactyl" just to see how long he could get away with it. It's hard to find someone that in touch with their insanity in freshman year. Among my fonder memories of this car was riding home from school with my friend Travis, not in the car but hanging off the back -- choosing to put our knees on the rear bumper holding on to that rear top spoiler while Ed drove one wheel up on sidewalks in the deserted antiseptic suburban streets of cookie cutter southern California. Glad to be alive all this time later. Good times, strange memories.

My first car (also my brother's first car since it was handed-down to me) was a 1988 Corolla SR5.
We bought it from the 1st owner. Some middle-aged lady.
She bought it with 1. Air con 2. automatic transmission
Yet she didn't buy it with a passenger-side mirror or a fuel-injected engine.
It seems to me that this combination of options would be complete blasphemy for any new car, or any car built in the 90s.
I do miss that thing, though. "where's your mirror?" "This car didn't come with one." "What?"

Yep, owned a 1991 DX hatch, 5 speed manual, equipped with 2 x 70 air con - 2 windows down, 70 miles per hour. Same metallic blue color, too. Paid $8 grand new, give or take. Best little car ever, I cry that no one, even Honda, has replicated this perfect magic trick. As you said, build quality was amazing, and my copy was absolutely reliable. Knock down the back sets, you can haul a 4-drawer dresser, and still shut the hatch. 8 foot long 2 x 4 would also fit with the hatch closed (required a dollop of Yankee ingenuity). Mr Regular, what this was, was a tiny truck, cleverly disguised as a 5 seatbelt, high 30’s mpg econo-box. Lack of ABS and air bags wouldn't work in today's auto marketplace, of course.

This reminds me of my first car, and '88 mercury tracer 3 door hatchback, it was built by Mazda, it pretty much was a 323 with a sleeker body style. It had a 1.6 tbi 4 cyl & a smooth shifting 5 spd manual, cable operated clutch as well, and no power steering or AC. The engine only made 80 hp & 90 lbs/ft of torque but at a low and usable 2,500 rpm! It had a 3.78 final drive ratio so in town it was surprisingly quick and peppy, and without those extra accessories on the engine draining the power, the engine felt more powerful than just 80 hp. It was extremely reliable as well

It's an '88 bought it from the second owner elderly lady that bought it new of course. It's a base model, red in color, 45000 original miles on engine, drivetrain and chassis. It needed a window and an alternator, left a note on it and bought it matching title for $100 last year. Been a great car ever since!

I had one of these! It was my very 1st car! Back in '93 I graduated High School and joined the Marines. My Grandfather, who was also a Marine, offered to buy me my 1st car as a present upon graduation from boot camp. We went to Porreco Ford and I found this little green Honda Civic Hatchback. It was a base with a 4 speed. The only options it had were the A/C and the tape deck. It was cheap and only 2 years old. Got the car for a measly 2500 and only had around 8k on it. I drove that car from PA to Fresno Oceanside California! I had the car for only 4 years before it was stolen and wrecked in San Diego back in '97 when I got out of the service. It was cheap, but she was a good little car!

Added radio & K-Mart floor mats. Best seats I’ve ever had in a car, period. 40 mpg all day long. Bulletproof reliability. Invisible to cops. Great handling, fun to drive. Just don’t expect to keep up with traffic in the mountains. Sold it 2 years later with 45k on it for 6500. Bought 2 more civics over the years. This one was still the best. Currently in a V6 Accord. Love it, but it pales in value and all around fun to the ‘91 Civic. Best car I’ve ever had.

Still got my blue 1991 ED6 STD Hatchback which I bought in1998. It has over 360K miles on it now and it is on its 2nd engine (D15B1). Use it as a spare car now.
I made a few upgrades to it over the years:
    - MPFI Swap (Fuel injection system from the SI with 4 injectors replacing the 2 injector DPFI system; this involved changing the intake manifold, throttle body, injectors, distributor, ECU, adding an injector resistor and running 4 extra wires from the ECU in the front passenger foot-well)
    - SI instrument cluster with tachometer
    - SI 3-spoke steering wheel
    - Added Right hand side mirror (didn't have one!)
    - Added Cigarette lighter socket (didn't have one!)
    - Added Digital clock in center console vent assembly (location was previously filled by a plastic trim piece)
    - Changed the 4-speed STD transmission for a 5-speed DX one (also replaced shifter knob)
    - Changed the windshield wiper control arm to a DX one that has an interval setting and rear wiper control, changed the multi-function control box behind the fuse box to a DX one that supports the wiper interval setting.
    - Changed the whole rear hatch to a DX hatch that has a rear wiper & washer
    - Added a washer motor to the washer reservoir tank plus wiring and ran hose to the rear for the rear washer.
    - Installed and wired in a '94 Integra map light in front ceiling.
    - Hardwired in power cable for Garmin GPS (with 12V to 5V adapter)
    - Installed DX/SI long style center e-brake console that wraps around the gear shifter.
(in total ran 10 extra wires to each door: 5 for power locks, 3 for power mirrors and 2 for power windows)
    - Installed a curved lower center console piece that connects the center dash console to the center e-brake console
    - Installed center e-brake console arm rest
    - Installed a AutoLoc Power Lock kit with keyless entry
    - Installed trunk popper that works from the keyless entry remote
    - Installed an aftermarket Power Window kit (window switches are installed on the center e-brake console)
    - With the window crank handle eliminated/removed, there was room to install Sedan style door storage pockets.
    - Installed OEM (sedan) power mirrors
    - Changed the damaged and worn out vinyl seats to blue cloth seats (front and rear) from a DX.
    - Changed the carpet while I was changing out the seats
    - Installed a cargo cover (hat shelf) over the trunk area
    - Installed white reverse glow gauge covers and painted gauge needles in orange reflective paint
    - Changed glove box to Si style that is padded on inside
    - Added a DX/SI trunk light
    - Installed a Short Ram Intake with cone type air filter
    - installed after market exhaust header
    - installed after market Cat.converter
    - Added a small buzzer plugged into fuse box that sounds when engine is off and headlights are on
    - Using converted 9005 headlight bulbs in the 9004 bulb sockets (much brighter!)
Probably forgot a few things here. but it is a pretty complete list.

The two weaknesses with the Honda Civics of that era, which other owners agreed with me on, was the position of the front axle CV rubber boots being next to the exhaust pipe. The high heat from the exhaust pipe made those CV boots to deform and crack in a matter of years; where, if the car operator didn't have the underside checked at times, the grease from those CV boots could drain away, resulting with the axle to seize due to lack of lubricant.
The second weakness was with the brakes, which could be attributed to the car's automatic transmission, as the front brake rotors were prone to warp. I had to have mine "turned" and replaced several times over the car's lifetime.

I had nearly this exact car in red, the only difference was it had one mirror and the 1.5l with all the glory of 72 hp. This was one of the last 4 speed manuals that could be bought on the US market and was a strange treat.
The A/C never worked right even after fiddling, rust was encroaching, there were random bits of green paint from where my buddy had tried to paint it or something. He was the previous owner, his parents bought the car new and put 197,000 miles on it. I drove it for 3 years and only gave it up after I slid into the the back of a 2010 Civic and just kissed the rear bumper when it was just barely rainy. With no airbags, no ABS, and no modern structure, I decided that it was eventually going to kill me, and so I sold it to an enthusiastic kid who wanted a manual for $50 less than I paid.
Loved that car, but I didn't feel like dying for the experience.

I bought my wife a new red '89 Civic Si to replace her '81 Ford Escort, and it was like comparing a Nash Rambler to a Ferrari, and was a total blast to drive. Bought her a new 2000 Civic sedan and the '89 became my work car, which I drove until I bought a new 2012 Civic EX-L sedan for myself. I was always having young guys try to buy that little red pocket rocket, and as far as I know it's still going strong. They were great little cars.

I got a used one with 170,000 miles, a former company car in 1997. In america, the B1 motor was rated at 70 hp, and by 220,000 the motor was on its last legs. I found a solid B2 motor (rated at 92 hp) and a 5 speed tranny at the local junkyard, and they took my old motor and tranny in return as part of the deal. A few evenings in my neighbor's garage, along with a new alternator and I was back in business, and drove it another 40,000 milles until I got new car fever and dropped 20 grand on a new Accord. I sold my old Civic to a friend for $500 to help him out of a nasty Ford EXP, and he put another 125,000 miles on it before he sold it recently (for $500).
Another fun fact is that there were actually 3 versions of the 1.5 liter motor available for that car in the US. The D15B1 was the base 70 horse motor 16 valves with a Throttle Body, the D15B2 was also 16 valves with a throttle body, and rated at 92 horsepower. There was also the D15B6, which I originally was going to swap in, It was a port injected motor, but was only 8 valves. It went into the CRX-HF models, and would have been very good on gas, but was only rated at 62 hp in the 88-89 models, and 72 in 90 and 91. I would also have had to change out the ECU and some of the wiring. The D15B2, along with the 5 speed definitely perked the car up, despite the fact that I should have gotten the PM5 ECU to replace the PM9. There were a total of 8 different versions of the motor, but the B1, B2, and B6 were the only motors made for the American market for the 88-91 model years

I have had my 88 hatchback for 20 years now. It didn't start off as a 70hp base model like yours, it was the 92hp DX, 5 speed, front sway bar, and AC. But still, very light. 4 motors later, has a built '96 DX motor with a TD05 16G on 24 psi and runs on E85. Rear disc brake conversion, front Wilwood 11" rotor 4 piston set up, converted to OBD1 and using eCTune. You wanna talk about fun.... Full 91 Si interior, clean as can be. I love 4th gen civics and I'll tell you what, mine looks pretty close to stock. Just lowered 2" and a clean Honda 4th gen silver paint. I liked your video. Cheers..!

I had a 1990 Civic wagon. It was one of the best cars I have ever owned. Best manual ever! The only issue it had was brake line rusting that required them to be replaced. My Honda got nearly 40 MPG highway and around 30 to 32 in the city. It was pretty bare bones except for A/C paid for through the stereo delete option. You could rev it up and it would move along at a decent pace. Fold the back seat down and it had a surprising amount of room. Now I am feeling nostalgic for those days.

    • @cohenthebarberian
      @cohenthebarberian 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Who knows but I think the G35 is the spiritual successor to the non-turbo Skylines from back in the day. It's the same chassis on the G35 and the GTR isn't it?

    • @sigmaprojects
      @sigmaprojects 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

thebbman I'm not sure the differences, but I know in Japan like the US there are no more Skyline GTRs, it's just the Nissan GTR. I was pretty sure that the G35 is just a rebadged Skyline 350GT. I think it's the same for the G37 and whatever came after that.
      But maybe there are differences.

    • @ThatCarGuy
      @ThatCarGuy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

+thebbman The G35/37 are Skylines. In USA we just call it the G35/37. But in Japan they are badged as Skylines. They are the exact same car. The GTR isn't a Skyline it just carries the GTR name and is just "the Nissan GTR" but it is NOT a Skyline. Read more here. en.wikipedia(DOT)org/wiki/Nissan_Skyline

This was my first car (1990 Honda Civic 4 speed)....what a great flashback. And I loved this car. 40 MPG easy on the highway. And yes, I had air conditioning installed in my base model as an option. It added 1200 to the price, but in humid Washington, DC, totally worth it.
