Hi, just wanted to say me relationship with my dad was awful in my teens, picked up for a couple of years then we basically didn't see each other at all for 12 years til late last year. Now we have a lovely relationship, he's coming today actually. We both said and did a lot of horrible things and the onus was on him when I was just a kid. From 12 to 16 he was physically abusive and verbally and emotionally. I blamed him for the way my life turned out, still kinda do but I also understand he was going through heartbreak after my mam leaving and had no idea how to look after a kid. I love my dad and I'm gutted I've missed so many years, he tried to kill himself in September and its brought us all back together. I hope one day you can make it up with your dad. I had to be the one to make the first move, then he did what he did and we've been close ever since. I doubt he'd have come looking for me though

Me too. I'm with St. Vincent in that I hate the song's lyrics. But I disagree about why. St. Vincent says it's sexist, but I don't get that at all. It does "pedestalize" women, and I suppose that makes the speaker seem like a sexist to St. Vincent, but to me it just makes the speaker seem like a cringeworthy simpering worm. But, this is just a criticism of the lyrics. Musically the song is quite interesting. It does have an interesting melody, and John does a great job with the harmonizations and chord changes. It's very beautifully done, except for the lyrical content, which is very cringe.

A couple years ago I suffered from a severe illness that put me in a coma. The doctors told my parents I would not make it. I was out for over 12 hours. I am a huge John fan so my family was just playing his songs for me. My heart was only 15. It started to pick up when Daughters was on so they kept replaying. I eventually woke up and here I am today
That just shows how powerful music can be to someone's life. In my case, John's music.

im 14 my dad used to play this song in the car all the time a month ago he had a heart attack and a stroke and was put in a coma for 3 long weeks. on july 3rd he passed away. its so hard knowing ill never sing this song with him again we didnt get along perfectly because he was the total opposite of me but he was still my dad and i miss him like hell i with i got to tell him how much i love him but im not affectionate and never told him so everyday i think about him and all the fun memories we’ve shared. the first time i visited him i sat and cried and held his hand i couldnt speak even though i knew he could hear me. i feel so guilty about that. after about 15 minutes of sitting in the hospital room with him he started opening his eyes and i saw tears shed. the next time i had vistited him because the doctors gave him a week to a month left to live. i could barely even look at him it looked nothing like him. that was last time i got to see him breathing. I miss you so much dad. ❤️❤️

The comments I've seen on the last few John Mayer videos Ive seen have all been "Oh, why do people like him, hes boring and bland" and it's so sad they can't see that he's the opposite. Firstly, Johns music has so much meaning in the words like this one, "Waiting on the World to Change" and "Say". Secondly, it's completely refreshing to see a relevant artist stick to his own style and play music the way he loves it and does best, INSTEAD of selling out to be the big-shot in the pop eye, like the rest of these other thirsty fame whores.

This song is so haunting with its lyrics... I'm not a dad, don't have any kids, but don't think I need one to know how special women are and how crucial they are to the survival of ALL mankind. We all came from mothers, who gave birth to us - even if they sacrificed nothing else - still gave us life, and that in itself is a blessing to be valued & cherished forever.

My 19 year-old daughter joined the USAF a week ago. Before that, she lived with me & we spent every moment together talking, laughing, joking & eating together. I hugged her every chance I would get after returning home from work & I would tell her how she meant the world to me...I write her almost every day now. I miss her. I am proud of her. I can"t wait till she"s back in my arms again. I live because of her. I love you, Viktoria!!!

i am a loving, and dedicated father of daughters. this song is what i listen to when they get difficult or when im frustrated with external things that have nothing to do with the kids, like work or bills.... it centers me and reminds me that someday theyll be grown and all any of us will have is memories, whether those memories are good or bad. this song absolutely crushes me. i cry and then i fawn over my kids like theyre newborns still... i think they know it too because i tend to hear this song right before one of them tells me they got an f on a test or something lol

I'm the same, have two girls,16 and 19 now. Was just changing diapers and going to daddy daughter dances yesterday. Oldest has gone to college now, rarely hear from her, it's heartbreaking, don't understand it. If I say something I'm told by wife that I'm being hard on her and that she doesn't want to hear it, I'm " pushing her away, being too needy." As a busy father who doesn’t get to spend much time with his daughter anymore this song reminds me to try and be extra present, attentive, and ready to deal with her every question or need when we do get to spend time together. I’m in tears writing this as I know going forward with my new career this is going to be the norm (not being around nearly as much as I have been her whole 4 years of existence). In the end I know I’m doing it for her. Just always remember moms and dads out there, every little moment counts. Have patience through the tough moments, it pays off

The relationship between a musician and their instrument is one of the most beautiful and sacred there is.. And not to mention the fact John is a beyond exceptional songwriter and composer. He does it all. How many musical acts on the top 100 can say that? Write, sing and play their song exclusively on their own???? Not many. This sort of talent comes once in a blue moon... He'll be a legend someday, just watch.

Although i must agree that most of top 100 music has very little to do with writing, composing and playing music, but there are amazing musicians out there you just have to dig a little deeper.

+Roel Hovius he doesn't just play slow tempo ballads. I just saw him on tour with the grateful dead and I was blown away by his guitar skills and even his singing voice. He even says that he wants to stray away from this mainstream pop music because it's so easy for him to write/play these songs. there are definitely guitar legends that he will never rank among, but for his generation he is definitely one of the best.

Lots of fathers like me, I'm sure tried to be in their daughter's life and some mothers kept them from their fathers. This song makes me cry and get upset that I am pushed away. I tried everything. Life is cruel sometimes. Never did anything to anyone. Just work and want to provide.
I read the statistics of a combatent divorce 87%of women with children will claim abuse in divorce. They do that first because they ultimately don't want to lose there kids all about control there on after. Sad that women will not stop an think using the children as a weapon cuts them so deep that messes them up for life. And I sent my ex letters tons of them and she turned into someone I didn't recognize her anger made the kids angry. The divorce was my fault for sure I was selfish prick that needed to stop spending money and drinking the way I was. And they al wanted that and took me to leaving and staying gone NOT MY CHOICE they didn't want me back after I went treatment and well she made me out the villian then demon them someone so foul I almost convinced myself I was crazy and it's true. All they said however god definitely showed up 3 times I shouldn't be here I tell u that. But here I am 6 years have been drunk since. My dad is a musician, has been for 60 years, and this is the only song I've seen him unable to perform because he gets so emotional. This man did hospice therapy for 14 years, this is the song that gets to him so much that he just can't get through it on stage.

This song finally made sense yesterday. My daughter and I are the same. We love with passion, and are cold and callous when we don’t have to be. I just realized she’s learning that from me. I have to be conscious even more now than ever to show her what it means to be a genuinely good person. This doesn’t just apply to daughters, we need to be good to our sons as well. They become fathers one day, and us as fathers owe it to them to be good foundations of how they should treat others.

Just as the line "Now she's left, cleaning up the mess he made" breaks your heart, the one line in this song that makes me cry and need a big hug is "Boys would be gone without warmth of a woman's good heart." The reason for that is while this song focuses primarily on a woman's severe need to be loved, that one line clearly proves that men need to be loved as much as women, no matter how much strength they've got.
