It's so incredible that a children's show in Britain would have a band like XTC. If we had had that here in the States, I would have been much cooler much sooner.
You mean, Partridge. He was the MAIN songwriter, by far, forXTC. I think Colin was more of a brilliant bass player. He did get the hit ªGenerals and Majors", but it was not one of my fave XTC songs. (sorry Colin!)
@@i_love_rescue_animals they're both pretty damn good! I'm a new fan, but when I was listening to Drums and Wires blind I had no idea there were even two different singers. Actually I thought all of it was Colin because I had only seen the Life Begins At The Hop video where he looked like the front man/singer for the band.
@@Mattman0106 Here's a very good live video (except the audience doesn't seem to be fully appreciating the brilliance on display in front of them!) of XTC from 1980 - ish: th-cam.com/video/We2ORbOVFuw/w-d-xo.html Andy is the one talking at the beginning, in the hat and center stage. Here, you will be able to differentiate their voices better. To me, Andy's voice is very unique. Love his voice and his songwriting. ❤
@@i_love_rescue_animalsI think Generals and Majors is a perfect pop song but aside from that... Making Plans For Nigel, Life Begins at the Hop, Wake Up, King for a Day, Are You Receiving Me, Ball and Chain, Wonderland. All great Colin songs
Brilliant band. Really quirky 'angular' guitar riffs, perfectly placed key changes. There wasn't anyone like them. I took to this band as a child ( I think I was ten when this came out) They fascinated me at the time.
Same with me, I was about 10 years old when Making Plans For Nigel came out about two years earlier than this, they totally hooked me after seeing them on Top of the Pops.
Came from a friend who taped it direct off the TV at the time. Had it on my channel before YT took it down and ended up here so people can still see it.
Those were the days - Swap Shop with the wonderful XTC as guests!! - What a wonderful load of prizes from Andy & Colin - I wonder who won all them the following week? But if you're out there - I'll be willing to do another Swap for them!!
11:02 Wow two of my favourite bands: Andy of XTC joking using OMD as the Kestral punch line! I wonder if they were mates? I know they were both on Virgin label. I have also heard Andy Mcclusky mention XTC visiting Eric's (music venue in Liverpool) in the late 70s. 2 different style bands but I loved the New Wave-y-ness about both bands.
4:00 MY GIDDY AUNT. I'd swap my Battling Tops game AND my Viewmaster for that GOLD RECORD of Drums And Wires, thank you very much!!! By the way....a fab and groovy kid there on the line saying she likes "I Am The Audience." Wow. From Go 2....one of their hardest albums to get into. How kids have changed!!
Not only are Andy and Colin two of the best songwriters ever, they absolutely danced rings around the despicable Edmonds and I love them even more for that lmao
Omg...these telephones are hilarious! It does not matter, what people ask, Andy is so funny in every way! Very entertaining children´s programme indeed.
At my first job, a co-worker lent me his copy of Black Sea, and I was hooked. I returned it, and it was destroyed when he left it in his hot car. Another item of note: I worked with "Tuco" at my first job as well.
This is literally an edited/shortened version of the studio album cut pasted over the live video. I don't think it's the uploaders fault... most likely swap shop covered the live audio up! You can tell a few slightly off sequence mouth movements, but whoever edited the clips and album audio did a very good job
Tony smith Andy has natural effervescence and the front-man presence, whether that was assisted by his then Valium addiction who can say. Regardless, he’s a talented and humorous bloke and morning tv is often the anathema of late-night rock musicians.
My Parents were on Deal or no Deal many years ago and they said he was the biggest pratt you will ever meet.....big headed, obnoxious, egotistical and talked down to eveybody.

i may have a minor (major) obsession with them

Oh to be back in my mum's house on a Saturday morning watching this.
Black Sea was my favourite XTC album
Those drums on Paper and Iron are amazing.

This is the best clip of them I’ve seen. Andy is obviously a natural comedian (and a tiny bit mad!)
Hello Imogen, fancy seeing you here, I hope you are well.
Stay safe, Joanna Deerfield (facebook).
The best songwriters are usually mad to an extent

extremely mad
Tense, the boy is quite tightly wound....
F****** love this with all my heart, thank you so much all above ❤️
Great to see this clip again. Remember watching it back in '81
Black Sea, a world away now in time but just bloody brilliant even today.
'I am the Audience.' Great song!
I want ALL THAT XTC SWAG.
I'll pay shipping.

Thanks to Jenny I know the song i am the audience amazing song
Hats off to Jenny (Deep Dive) I am the Audience. It's kind of remarkable that this was mainstream TV for us '80's kids.
Really amazing and generous merch, Andy is mad as a box of frogs.
Those were the days, used to watch swap shop back in the day. Good post.

Kestral Manoeuvres in the dark😂
I can't believe they read out addresses!!
Amazing, there's been nothing like them before or since.

Kestrel Manoeuvres in the dark.. Gas man.. Remember watching this and highin up the volume.. No remote controls in them days.

Noel Edmonds still wearing flares in 1981!
That was a big no no by '81

They were lip syncing, not really playing or singing. The guitars aren't even plugged in.
it's good watching them all the same. Answer to the question is British Steel .. Steel ...Steel ...
Lip Synching (Miming) was a common practice from the 1970s - 1990s. I'm not sure how common it is now.
Did someone film their TV? Got vertigo a few times.
XTC SIMPLY THE BEST. ALONG WITH THE CARS. THE GREATEST MUSIC OF THAT GENRE. NOTHING AS GOOD SINCE.
Great alt bands.
Either the cameraman is drunk or it's been made that way to avoid copyright. As it's BBC and 1981, I'll assume it's the former.
Great album...MUMMER.
the 70's really were "Another country"..
More than enough cigarettes to kill millions, poor fuel mileage in cars, and some cars were still running on leaded gasoline. Yeah.
Yup, but this was the 80's lol.

1. Is that the same tie they found Epstein wearing? 4:44
2. Why is Terry wearing Lt.Uhura’s uniform? 11:58
Didn't recognise Andy with his glasses off,but i wish he was my friend.
I always watched Tiswas instead of Swap Shop. I think this was because even as a child I had a pathological aversion to Noel(bearded dwarf)Edmonds.
Or maybe because you preferred Lenny Henry, Sally James & Chris Tarrant?
Frank Booth, sedated. Aye me too. All the posh kids at school watched Swap Shop and us rough ones watched Tiswas. Swap Shop totally sucked
@@ringolevio5921 No it didn't, it was great fun to watch on a Saturday morning, we had to have an alternative to the anarchy of Tiswas.

Andy partridge doesn't stop talking but I suppose that's whats called personality as some of its quite witty at times.

Andy’s quite a funny guy, too funny for swap shop and better suited to Tiswas
It's probably the ramblings of someone very shy in public, who has to be "on" to get by. Trust me, I'm the same.
@@cessnaverdi Yeah by "on" I'm assuming you mean on valium, bearing in mind that his was during his "valium" period.
British Steel
you don't need the tees or anything. This band were a genius - pity Andy couldn't handle playing live - I fucking love XTC. xxx
The lip syching was so obvious and horrific, Terry Chambers immediately moved to Australia after the show.
No he didn’t. He left in 1983 while they were recording Mummer.
@@BigSky1 It was a joke.
Feature phone calls live on telly, who but the British would think to do it? Genius! CHEtongueEK
Not exactly kids' show lyrics on Paper & Iron ;) "What's he talking about, daddy?"
Andy looks like Sandi Toksvig here.
1:40 Using Stabilizer (or whatever that thing is making it all wonky) on a clip from 1980 is a bad idea. Ah well....I can cope, just!
ugh yes, i hate these sort of stabilizing effects... i've yet to see it actually make a video look "better," it's really just disorienting
5:14 😆
They look about twelve years old in this, in fact, Jimmy Savile over in the next studio . . . .
Noel Edmonds is going out of his way to be obnoxious here, amazing he lasted the test of time
I think he means he hates the song in a good way.

@@pr9062 That's Show Business.
And this illustrates why I rarely watched Swap Shop - Noel Edmunds was bloody irritating in this clip! Chris Tarrant for the win!
Tiswas always won in our house on a Saturday morning, great stuff
Drummer Terry Chambers is touring with eXTC in December, the closest to the real thing.
Colin Moulding looks uncomfortable and hasn't got anything to say.
It’s actually very funny in my opinion. The amount of awkwardness reminds me of a comedy sketch.
He didn't often say much in XTC interviews.
I guess it’s too late to ask Andy for a lock of his hair.
No wonder Noel fled to new zealand
""...that's from Canada..." LOL That's our lot isn't it......Canadians.

Of course, this song would be considered sexist these days, even though it is precisely the opposite.
Why would it be considered sexist?

That's an ignorant thing to say considering the song did get criticized for that exact lyric when it came out
That line is referring to DA/DV so ahead of its day for a pop song, this narrative would be applauded today
Noel Edmonds is in a crappy mood isn't he? 😅
