I saw them in the early 80s in America before Andy had his difficulties with performing live. My bandmates and I went to a meet and greet at a record store. I have the pictures. Most Americans miss so many great bands because of the sad state of radio programming since the 1970s. Also more than a little misplaced jingoism in there. Dave Gregory is one of the most underrated and great guitarist ever!

Terry Chambers should be elevated to the drummers hall of fame. Not only does he not miss a beat, his playing blends instinct with invention. Many a player has been tutored by drumming to records, occasionally one is born to art. TC was born to it, and as dismissive as folks might be, he was up with John Bonham.
Easily in the top ten greatest rock song-writers of all time. While Andy is no slouch on guitar, Dave Gregory created and played things the rest of us mere mortals can only dream of.

I was *very* lucky and had to pay only $200 NZD for the two tickets to The Police's show here in Wellington in January 2008 😀 That was the only time I'd ever been to one of their shows, too 🙂
Performance anxiety. Much chronicled. He also decided he liked being able to record the songs the way he wanted to without having to worry about being able to replicate it live.

There's a photo from December 1979 of him just sitting on the side of the stage for some reason, I guess not feeling it, but maybe it's one of the times he forgot how to play a guitar. In early February 1980, he was literally having bouts of amnesia, forgetting who he is. 1980 was an intense touring year for them. By Mid 1981, they stopped touring to focus on the recording of English Settlement. Well, Andy slogged it through the beginning of the tour for that album, but gave up on March 18th 1982, then played one last show on April 3rd 1982, and that was that. See, Andy was put on Valium a month before he turned 13. He was taking handfuls of them at once, then his wife tossed them all in November 1979 (after about 13 years of using Valium,) and this was before people realized what chemical dependence was with Valium. In mental equivalent, it seems like Andy more or less got hit by a car, then left on the side of the road without a support system, except that he had to drag himself. Not literally, of course, mind you.
Wow. Was unaware why Andy stopped. A unique band even in a era when there actually were loads of unique acts. I bought their first 2 albums on import Living in Colorado, I had little hope of seeing XTC live. Although, I did get to see Magazine in Denver.
I used to watch "Jukebox," a video show that came on locally right after SNL back in 1979 and 1980. It was hosted by Twiggy. That's how I first learned of XTC as I started my Senior Year of High School. I saw vids for "Making Plans For Nigel" and "Life Begins at The Hop." Went out and bought Drums and Wires the next time I got paid from my weekend gig. The following year, at College, I discovered record stores with more than a single half-filled crate of Alternative music. I bought White Music and Go Two my first week there, and Black Sea a few weeks later as soon as it was released. This concert is a nice time capsule for me.
XTC on the Mt Rushmore of the greatest bands in rock n roll history. Such a great live band and studio band. Musicianship is off the fucking charts. And all the blokes are such humble sweet guys recenty watched in podcats.
Yes, Andy ... genius and Colin ... so melodic and talented on bass but without Dave Gregory filling in all the harmony and melody on keys and guitars and vocals we can only wonder, I don't know if the XTC we love could ever be this brilliant. He is a truly brilliant player and the glue for this band for many of their best years and albums.
I've always come on here to watch XTC promo videos. Tonight, I noticed an audio only live recording from ancient times, which eventually led me to this. It's really hard to fathom 'why' they stopped playing live from watching this. Andy is enigmatic to say the least, and holds court as well as anybody. The only 'live' performance I've seen before now, is the David Letterman one from 89 or so, where Colin does King for a Day. Andy so seems in his element, just as much as he does in any video. I was introduced to them via the Senses Working Overtime video, when it was on heavy airplay on Mtv when I was about 11, and they'd stopped playing live by then. Then the late 80's albums were so brilliant, early 90's, even to the Apple Venus'. I'd have LOVED to see them like this, playing tight, Andy in top form, Colin being, sigh, Colin, Dave playing both lead and keyboard live...man, they should have been massive. Good thing there are those of us who have always loved them 💖

I completely agree, I have followed XTC since the single 'Statue of Liberty' was released. I was having a bad day and a friend of mine asked me if I would like to go with him to see XTC who were playing just down the road. I went and it changed my life. I don't know if Andy would agree but the night at the Sherwood Rooms in Nottingham was the best performance. We kept them on stage till Andy admitted his Coco was getting cold. Mind blowing, I saw them again in Loughborough university after which of course touring ended. I understand it now but at the time it was a cruel end for thousands of us XT seers
I'm, so happy I got to see them live in a little club in Albany, NY on the Drums and Wires tour in 1979. I was right up to the stage in front of Andy. Jimmie O'Neil of Fingerprintz, the opening act, was out front with us, dancing.
I won't say this band saved my life, but they sure as hell altered it in a permanent way for the better. So cool to hear them in raw form. Thanks for posting!
In 1979, I won free passes, some promo 45's and free pizza at Conan's Pizza in a before show party from the local radio station in Austin TX, KLBJ. After pizza they played at The Armadillo World Headquarters. The show was amazing. I still have the 45's and XTC are still one of my all time favorite bands.
@@Heston68 I was just thinking that myself. This band gets it. They write catchy and melodic material with strong vocals and groove. They are certainly not run of the mill. They deserved a lot more success than they actually achieved. They were ahead of their time.

As a huge fan of guitarists/groups like Adrian Belew, The Tubes, The Magic Band, ext.. I'm not sure why I've never sought these guys out. I grew up loving Making Plans for Nigel, but I never heard anything else by these guys. I've been missing out for sure!
I've seen so many great concerts over the years starting around 1978 so WHY the L did not I witness the live greatness of XTC while it was briefly active, I have no idea. I'd trade more than a few of the great shows I've seen for just one XTC concert! Thanks for posting :-)

I was lucky en0ugh t0 see them live 2 0r 3 times and they were awes0me. Terry Chambers was a machine, the rest were tight as a duck's arse with his beats and they were as l0ud as h0ly hell.
First heard of them when they opened for the Police Zenyatta tour...their sound quality was poor ( by Police design?) I love them every bit as much as the Police....why they never got HUGE???

The only time I saw XTC was on their Black Sea tour opening for the Police on their Zenyatta Mondatta tour in Austin, Texas, November 1980.

They only improved in quality after he left. He called "mummer" music "poofy" and bailed. What an ape.

Saw them in Maryland, At painters mill star theater 1980 , I was 13 at the time.
I was at that show as well. There was a showcase of bands with them at that show but I don't remember the other 3 or 4 bands. I was 20.

it is an epiphone Newport. I think he played it on the first four xtc albums
@@srl6018 He still had the same bass as of 2000, dunno if he still has it. It was seen in their 1986 music video for "The Meeting Place."
