Saturday 21 February 1981 . XTC appear live on BBC1 TV children's show ,hosted by Noel Edmonds .Andy gives away to viewers his Antoria acoustc guitar and Colin his Drums and Wires gold disc.

You should check out EXTC, Terry Chambers' XTC cover band. I've seen them twice already!! He can still bang the skins.
Produced by Steve Lilliwhite for this track, who'd produced Souxsie and the Banshees' 'the scream' a couple of years before. XTC said "make our drums sound like that" , so....
Gotta love Terry Chambers drumming. He was a true original. And *HE* isn't miming ;-).
My kids grew up with XTC blaring out of the speakers at home and in every road trip...The youngest love this and Scissor man..

Thanks SO much for uploading this. This is probably my favourite ever XTC song and although it's not performed 'live' the band put in a great performance anyway!
Terry Chambers was a really underrated drummer - although tthe drums in this song do sound very like the intro to 'Sat In Your Lap' by Kate Bush, but that's no bad thing!
This was released nine months before 'Sat in your lap'.
Terry Chambers was hugely influential. Not nearly as famous as he should’ve been, but he was never actually underrated by anyone who heard his playing with XTC. Can you imagine this band with anyone else on drums? It’s not like Andy and Colin were telling him what to play. His drum parts we are as much a part of XTCs songs as anything.
@@HarryJoiner Yes, Terry Chambers was a magnificent drummer and massively important to XTC. Andy, Colin, Dave and Terry was the classic band line-up.

Hard to believe that someone who loved the camera as much as Andy would have a problem with stage fright.
the valium withdrawal had a lot to do with the stage fright starting mid 81 shortly after this video.

Sometimes underlying issues don't rise to the surface until the pressures you face push you to a breakdown and you can't go back. Happens to alot of young men in the spotlight, Syd Barrett being a perfect example.
@@richalderson6069 good point. At least Partridge went on to make a lot of great music. Syd Barrett kind of just devolved into madness.
In 1981 there weren't many opportunities to get on tv, Saturday morning kids tv was big, so a great opportunity to get seen.
This is the very first time I ever saw a video for "Paper and Iron." With the wonderful Terry Chambers on the Drums!

... and, at the end of the clip of Swindon's finest, a snatch of 'Reward' by Teardrop Explodes, the video for which was filmed in Avonmouth/Bristol, UK. These were the reasons to love that era.

When I was about ten, my brother and I saw the documentary "XTC at the Manor", and we absolutely LOVED Towers of London (the song featured most prominently in the programme), yet that track isn't what you'd think kids would connect with either. Good, catchy music is good catchy music - most kids don't listen to the lyrics at first anyway!
This is one of my fav songs on planet earth!
They were ALL the mighty XTC!! Terry's muscles are greatly missed!

"Paper and Iron" came 1 year earlier than "Sat In Your Lap" 1982. Maybe Kate listened to this and got inspired !?
No idea but the Black Sea album (which this was on) was released in 1980.
The engineer or the producer has chosen to make the sound of the percussion similar. The style of drums was modern around this time. Otherwise, these pieces have nothing in common.
As last comment .. ...looks like its down to me to give my son exposure to decent music! Was envious of 60s teenagers for their choice of music, but looking back the early 80s was a 'golden age' also.These days even XFM play the same four songs all day!

@Stube437 Its not stage fright exactly, He has touring fright. He was touring and recording music for five years without a break.

There's also an interview clip that took place (In the broadcast) just prior to this mimed performance. In it, One or two kids called the band on the telephone but I haven't seen it for over a year. Also, Andy was being rather joking with his guitar at one point for that broadcast/recording.

Whoa. I was just a little kid in '81 but always have wondered why XTC never seemed to be properly supported and appreciated by Virgin. What a shame!!
Richard Branson didn't get a return on his investment like he imagined. Where's me shekels blarney!
Branson was looking for something a little quirky, like Mike Oldfield. Instead he got the very quirky XTC, and Virgin didn't really have a clue what to do with them. The fact that they gave up touring didn't help matters.
@@wangdangdoodie not just that, but XTC signed a bad deal that, when Virgin finally got some money for English Settlement, Skylarking, and Oranges and Lemons (they had big hits on them when pop radio began to embrace the nascent alternative rock genre), the band got jack. It got to the point where Colin and Dave had to work as parking attendants just to make enough money to survive - Andy at least could make money by being a songwriter-for-hire.
All part of the music business but a brilliant song nonetheless. I love them. You're doing a grand job egidio.

what!? Is this real!? I can't believe XTC performed on a kids TV show. I don't know any adults that have heard this song, let alone kids.
@DavidRavenMoon Dead right! And in my mind's eye, he was hidden behind some monster prog-rock 1970's uber-drumkit, but nope there he is with a 'beat-group' type set up, making it sound like a beast.
Guess this director hadn't yet learned that Colin had the pretty boy looks. Not really even a single CU of him. Good lip syncing by Andy, Dave beating up that Firebird and Terry going nuts on the skins. Good stuff even though it was a lip sync.

Swap Shop, not Wap. And ppl stop moaning about lip-sync miming. A very common method for TV appearances, sheesh. So they don't have to be concerned about mxing the sound. Play the recorded audio, quick in and out.

Its no wonder XTC had issueswith Virgin when it came o promoting ther stff. This was a (Bad) kids program on a saturday morning. Can you thnk of a song that would conect less with the under 12s?
Pretty much musically more advanced version of The Kinks. Seriously. With more astute lyrics.
